Strongly prefer the 2nd edition to this 3rd one

In my doctoral studies, I learned program planning with the 1st edition of this book. Over the last 13 years, it has been at my side as I administered educational programs for museums, corporate training departments, and institutions of higher education. When the 2nd edition came out, I updated my own copy. Frequently, I purchased the book for my own staff.

When I learned a 3rd ed was out, I was thrilled because I hoped it would incorporate the many exciting technological developments since the 2nd edition was written. While it does do this, it also left online (and not in print) MANY of the helpful figures and exhibits that are at the heart of what make this an ongoing user's manual.

IF I were teaching a program planning course, I'd have to use this 3rd edition and spend the time pulling online exhibits (accessible with purchase of written text) to the attention of my students. As I practice program planning, however, I simply do not have the time.

The third edition is already shelved (I'll pull it only to look for some insights on new technologies); the 2nd edition is back on my desk.Planning Programs for Adult Learners: A Practical Guide for Educators, Trainers, and Staff Developers, 2nd Edition

This encyclopedia provides well-written definitions of terms and concepts surrounding issues of life and death. It also includes very practical and sometimes quirky information (one of the 13 appendixes is a four-page table of the odds of death from various causes; another is a record of U.S. war deaths). There is also a guide to end-of-life care at home. The more than 560 entries define terms related to culture, economics, history, legislation, medicine, religion, and sociology. Examples include Burial at sea, Condolence letters, Day of the Dead, Fraud in the funeral industry, Hospice, Oregon Death with Dignity Act, Seance, Suicide, and Victorian mourning dress. Each entry concludes with bibliographic references. A classified bibliography lists articles, books, and videos.

Other widely held works with similar names--Macmillan Encyclopedia of Death and Dying (2002) and Encyclopedia of Death and Dying (Routledge, 2002)--support and augment each other because of differences in treatment and scope. This new work fills an important niche, explaining a wide variety of terms with clarity and precision. An example is the definition of Wrongful death, credited to FindLaw for the Public online, which explains legal criteria and personal behavior. The Macmillan encyclopedia only mentions the term in its entry on Rock music, with no definition. In fact, there is surprisingly little overlap between the title under review and other works. Using entries related to death and music as an example, while the Macmillan encyclopedia has entries on classical music, the Auschwitz orchestra, death motifs, masses for the dead, and the Orpheus myth, the Facts On File volume has entries on Dirge, Jazz funeral, Music therapy for the dying, and Taps. The subject of death is much too large for one author or group of authors. There is much to be learned from all the mentioned works.

The straightforward, factual approach toward this highly emotional topic is well presented. The subtle differences in terms and jargon are carefully explained. This is a valuable encyclopedia, highly recommended to public and academic libraries. Linda Loos Scarth

I've been out of seminary for over 15 years. Most of the lectures I heard, material I read, and notes I took are lost to me now, but some resources linger. A few textbooks and notebooks continue to be useful as I seek out answers for present ministry issues. The reason I share this is because I view Advanced Strategic Planning by Aubrey Malphurs in the same light.

This book is a living resource, with a treasure of practical insights and leadership principles that can be referred to over and over again. It is a must-have resource for every conscientious church leader who is serious about developing a healthy, growing church environment.

Shepherding pastors who do not have a leadership gift or pastors who have little patience for the practical elements of church leadership may struggle to finish the book because it is exhaustive, detailed, and rather technical. But those who feel burdened to nurture a healthy church culture with a vision of maximizing their congregation's Kingdom potential will find great value in it.

Malphurs uses the metaphor of sailing throughout the book to illustrate, explain, and model the benefits of strategic planning. He breaks down the process in great detail, explaining the why, what, and how of mission, vision, values, and strategy. Each chapter includes summaries of the main points as well as practical, helpful questions at the end to help you reflect on personal applications for your ministry context. HI FOLKS! These writings are so inspired, they will have you laughing , crying, saying "Yep, Ive been there" and so deeply informative. I truly would have liked to have met this remarkable, yet simple child of Faith. I know one thing for sure, the people I have shared her works with, have wept with joy because they could relate to what she was writing about. Now that is what I call a writer! I recommend this book for people with depression and even if you don't have depression. She touches every aspect of life giving credit where credit is due. It truly is a gift that keeps on giving. Postmodern Christianity?

If you're looking for a single resource that discusses various Christian responses to postmodern thought, this is the book you should read. It's one of those "six views" collections with articles from two scholars who reject postmodernism as hazardous to faith, three who embrace postmodern thinking and seek to "revision" Christianity in postmodern terms, and one who adopts what he calls a posture of "dispute."

This last approach, the one I find most appealing, comes from Kevin Vanhoozer, and his essay alone is worth the price of the book. While many (perhaps most) evangelicals are not taking postmodernism seriously enough and some are taking it way too seriously, Vanhoozer is at just the right level of not taking it seriously. Here's a sample:

"Why do I prefer a disputational rather than a conversational model of dialogue? Dispute better captures the seriousness of the encounter; something important is at stake in this discussion. Dispute also suggests that I am contending for my position, not simply sharing it. Better: I am contending for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints (Jude 3). Finally, "disputation" has the merit of being a venerable genre of theology, dating from the medieval period. Part of my purpose in the present essay, however, is to revise the notion of disputation so that the focus is on a whole person witness to concrete Christian wisdom rather than a wholly intellectual demonstration of an abstract truth. On this latter point--the necessity of going beyond analysis--I do not dispute with postmodernity but say "amen." To dispute with postmodernity is also to engage it. Christian thinkers cannot go around postmodernity; we have to go through it."

You seminary students should go to the library and make yourself a copy of this article entitled, "Pilgrim's Digress: Christian Thinking on and about the Post/Modern Way." There's a lot of wisdom here for Christians who want to outgrow the individualistic, rationalistic, anti-ecclesial faith of 20th century evangelicalism without becoming stupid.

A great snapshot of the debate

There are six views expressed by six authors: two that see the postmodern turn as a turn into apostasy, two that are neither for or against, and two that see the turn towards postmodernism as the salvation of the church. All are well written, and after reading a number of books on this subject, this seems to capture the true nature of the debate. Don't skip the Introduction, because Myron Penner gives a good overview or "lay of the land" including a brief (but good) description of postmodernism. Several of the authors represented have written full length books on the subject--but when you read their book you only get that one view. And the second half of the book is each writer's opportunity to respond to what others wrote in the first part. I especially think chapter three by Kevin J. Vanhoozer is an important attempt to value both perspectives.

Christianity, Postmodernism, and Not Getting It Right

We keep on talking past each other. This volume, born of Myron Penner's observations at the Evangelical Theological Society meetings that people arguing about postmodernism rarely seem to be talking about the same thing, seem to prove his point without, unfortunately, providing further ground. The essays that are helpful are quite helpful; those that are unhelpful are, well, not. Penner's introduction, "Christianity and the Postmodern Turn," helpfully outlines postmodernism as more of an ethos than a philosophical school, a suspicion of universal explanations (particularly science), and an emphasis on language. The rest of the six contributors then display their (conflicting) explanations of postmodernism and why it is helpful, parallel, or inimical to the Christian gospel. A second half responds to the first set of essays, clarifying points and challenging others.

R. Douglas Geivett's essay helpfully identifies foundationalism but then goes on to prove postmodern critiques of its tendency to universal domination all too correct. Likewise, R. Scott Smith's defense of realism ignores the possibility of aesthetic or ethical appeals to truth (as several of the comments in Part II observe). Kevin Vanhoozer does his usual job of lovely postmodernish writing to defend essentially evangelical claims, using C.S. Lewis' Pilgrim's Regress as a starting point for his observations. Of the other essays, James K. A. Smith's careful explication of what Lyotard meant by a metanarrative - and why Christianity is not one - is perhaps the strongest essay in the book. Recommended for evangelical thinkers and theologians as a resource for how the conversation goes - but nobody is likely to be induced to switch to "the other side."

Gives you some things to think about

I read this book as a requirement for a Dispensationalism class in Seminary. It gives you a look at what Progressive Dispensationalists believe. Since I am a classic Dispensationalist, I did not agree with much of the book. However, it helped me to understand their position. I wrote a paper on their view and subsequently received an A so the book did its job.

Something All Diligent Lay Christians Must Read

I am not a Christian with fanciful theological degrees from one of the acclaimed seminaries. No, I'm strictly a lay believer who loves the Lord and strives to understand His ways and His will. Before coming to this book, I had studied the Bible with more than 30 commentaries and thought I knew something about God's Word. Boy, was I self-deceived.

You see, I had never ventured into the area of Biblical Theology (as opposed to Systematic Theology). I had always considered divine covenants to be nothing more than an historical footnote in the history of Israel, with little relevance for today's believer. Thanks to this book I now understand how covenants are probably the most important theme in Holy Scripture.

No, you don't need to be a dispensationalist to learn from this book (I'm not one). And don't be fooled by people who harbor strong suscipions about dispensational theology. There's nothing heretic about it's latest iteration, Progressive Dispensationalism. In fact, this book has only a relatively minor chapter on dispensations. Most of the book focuses on two important biblical themes: the covenants and the Kingdom of God.

One warning though: If you are a non-scholar like me, you'll probably find this book boring. But push your way through the pages and by the time you get to see how one covenant links to the next before finally arriving at the New Covenant, you will see the glorious redemptive plan of God. And when you get to the final chapter of the book, your soul will be overflowing with praise for the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

A Wonderful Book on Metaphysics

Graham Ward provides theological and metaphysical insight into 'the church' and 'the world' and how, as Hauerwas put it, they "implicate each other." This is rather serious and 'proper' theologizing and not for 'everyone' as other books in the series have aimed to do. Basically, ask yourself a few questions... Do I want to know if the modern city has an traceable eschatology? Do I want to learn how globalization squirmed its way out of the Christian tradition? What are the metaphysics of American 'liberal democracy' and 'neoliberal economics'? etc.

If one understands what the book is aiming to do, and braces for how much erudition Ward uses to do it... then they will love it!

More politics than discipleship

I had higher hopes for this book than it delivered. The title made me think of "Gaudium et Spes," the document of the Catholic Ecumenical Vatican II Council, regarding the Church in the Modern World. But The Politics of Discipleship divided World from Church, not interweaving the two, as much as Gaudium et Spes did.

When I hear or read the word 'Politics,' even when it claims to be about the Aristotelian notion of politics, humans acting to govern their city (polis), or nation, I reach for my wallet, and I'm glad i did in the case of this book.

From the title, one would expect that the author would be equally congratulatory, or equally severe, on every human political party (in this case, American) orientation. But one would be wrong. By my count, there are at least 7 or 8 references to US President George W. Bush, and each one of those are derogatory. Now, it is fine for one to deplore the presidency of George W. Bush, but do not make him into paradigm of all evil. Also, the first half of the book, and many places in the second half, on the Church, are very hard on "laissez faire" capitalism, and not nearly as hard on the much more materialistic Marxism--the words 'Soviet Union' are not found in the book.

But no one I know is in favor of laissez faire, completely unregulated capitalism, so Ward is arguing against the proverbial straw man. Indeed, the word 'capitalism' is most reminiscent of Marx' Das Kapital, which hardly qualifies as a reputable source in our day.

Regarding both capitalism (which Pope John Paul II would rather call the 'market economy) and democracy, everyone would agree that they are the worst economic and political systems, except for all the others. Thus, Ward's book comes across as a brief for the Left.

On the other hand, I found in Chapter 7, the last chapter, much good Biblical exegesis.

Take this book 'cum grano salis.'

His Schtick: He is Suspicious of Democracy, Yawn!

This book is just a rehash of the usual reactionary nonsense in the form of postmodern rhetoric. He is one of the new sort of thinkers that distrusts liberal democracy, because of a very tendentious interpretation of Christendom's history. It flouts actual history itself, in the course of it. On p. 25, he says that though the Roman Church was expanding it had a greater sense of its "smallness." Ridiculous. The opposite is true. But that he says it is no surprise because such reactionary fellows are at pains to portray the expansion of Christendom's actual ambitions as some how not as merely material as they were. The Counter-Reformation it a bit of an inconvenience for their theory. It is all about blaming the Enlightenment in the end, and liberal democracy. It is pure foolishness, and cussedness from people who have benefitted so much from it. Modern culture is filled with problems, no doubt, but the answer is NOT to demean what is good in those developments. The nadir of this way of thinking comes in his utterly false statement that democracy is somehow intrinsically unstable. Amazingly, one can limn a cypto-neo-monarchist effort in this thinking and that of a scholar that Ward praises, Christopher Ferrara. His thinking is so base, that he sees democracy as the forcing ground of totalitarianism. Incredible. The book seems the purest nonsense from the actual historical perspective of real life. But in a theology department, which needs someone safely reactionary enough to handle the postmodern effluvia it is like like the Ruach of the spirit blowing down the graduate halls with some naughty, outre Foucaultian tropes caught in the wind.

I've purchased three copies of this book because I keep giving to fellow teachers! Powerful ideas and examples of real-classroom writing projects. This is a read-it-tonight-and-use-it-tomorrow resource for teachers moving toward a "I do, we do, you do" classroom. My middle school students have produced some of their best work based on lessons from this resource.
