Dick Eastman is the international president of Every Home for Christ and president of America's National Prayer Committee. No Easy Road

Hearts that yearn to pray more effectively and with greater depth will find this book stimulating, challenging and helpful. I made it required reading for my seminary students in a course on Evangelism and Church Growth. When the evaluations came back this text and the application got high marks. I distribute it to those in my church who have a "prayer bent" to encourage, inform, challenge and to say "thank you" for their intercessory role.

About the Author

Bruce McCraw, retired professor from the University of Guelph, first experienced Sparrow Lake as a toddler with his family. There his father is reputed to have caught one of the largest muskies ever taken from the lake. Today Bruce continues his research, but now the focus is on the resorts of Sparrow Lake and on matching his father's prowess as a fisherman.

Inspirational

Moments of Peace from the Psalms is a beautiful little book and makes a wonderful gift for yourself or anyone else. It is filled with the most beautiful awe-inspiring pictures which accompany verses from the Psalms. A little story goes along with each verse which always leaves you encouraged, inspired and determined. I highly recommend this book!!

Lean methods for everyday businesses

I got this early copy after meeting Benji at a conference in late September and enjoyed his presentation on his testing and optimization methodology for his businesses, specifically ConversionCore.

I'm not one to write reviews as there's usually plenty of feedback that reflects my thoughts on the book, but since this is the first, I figured I'd kick start things here for Benji as I think this is a book that will help a lot of business owners.

I titled this "Lean methods for everyday businesses" because I've read "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries and Benji echoes a lot of the concepts shared in that book, but with more of a tack toward applying his methods to everyday businesses, as opposed to software startups that Ries engages. Also, Benji's book is less rigorous, so it is an easier read and should feel very approachable by any business owner, whether they're an analysis junky or are just getting into testing and measuring results before jumping in with both feet.

The big takeaway from the book is to run small, low risk tests in anything you do before taking the plunge and putting serious time, capital and reputation on the line without some certainty of success that is supported by the initial tests. He does a good job of providing examples across any number of areas of business and life, so it's very application focused and you won't end up lost in a bunch of ambiguous theory.

My only knock on the book is that it wasn't as refined as "The Lean Startup", or other Best Sellers in that space, but I imagine that's because it didn't have the horsepower of a big publishing editorial team behind it to polish it endlessly. There are times where the sentence reads very clumsily, as if it was transcribed from Benji's stream of consciousness (which is a seriously fast flow) as opposed to rewriting it to be easier to process visually. I only bring this up as some readers may be turned off by the lack of polish, missing all the value in the content in the process, arguing that a 5 star rating was inappropriate here.

Simple, Life-Changing Concept!

This book was a fast-paced, enjoyable read. It's informative and enlightening. But, the power of it's message really hits later...when, in the midst of business and life, I have found myself resolving dilemmas and making decisions based on it's core principle, "test before you test." My business partner and I both read this book a few weeks ago. Since them, we have literally quoted and referenced it almost daily! It is beginning to define the culture of our business...and seeping into our personal lives as we share the message with family and friends. It's definitely worth the time to read...don't miss it!

Loved the non-judgmental tone and positive message

Most people who know me think I am incredibly organized, my car doesn't have any junk in it, and my home is tidy. True confession time --- I am a messie who constantly struggles daily to keep things that way. I am married to a messie and my teenage daughter leans more toward messie so that doesn't help either. When I use the term "messie" I am using the word that Sandra Felton uses to describe people who live in a constant state of clutter and disorganization. The opposite of that is "cleanie" which describes someone who is organized, efficient, and their home is calm and uncluttered. That is what I aspire to be on a daily basis.

This book is written by someone who is by nature a messie as well and has worked to find systems that enable her to move toward the cleanie lifestyle. Quite a bit of the book is philosophical, describing the two styles and explaining the impact of each on our quality of life. As she says, an extreme cleanie may be just as difficult to live with as someone on the other end of the scale. Either end of the spectrum has its drawbacks and maybe somewhere in the middle is best for most of us. Ms. Fulton does move back and forth between providing general information about messies and cleanies and providing step-by-step instructions for how to get a handle on the clutter and keep it under control.

One the things I liked best about the book is the acknowledgement that some people are just wired to be messies --- creative types, people with ADD, etc. and others are wired to be cleanies. I have friends that fall into both camps and my messie friends spend more time trying to be organized and frustrated with their failures than my cleanie friends do. Some people are just naturally one way or the other and it does not make you a lesser person to be someone who struggles with clutter.

I often pick up these types of books since I am a messie (masquerading as a cleanie) and am constantly trying to find new systems/processes that are better than what I am using. Also, reading books like these give me that energy boost I need when I am starting to slide back into messie habits. Even with fairly diligent and consistent efforts, I still have to have clean-up/decluttering projects periodically to get things back in line. Just this past January, my husband and I went through our master closet and removed 11 big bags of items to donate or throw away even though things looked ok before we started.

This book is very strong in two aspects: 1) the validation that you are not defective if you are a messie and it takes away judgment (you still need to address it, but there is no guilt about the way we are wired) and 2) a cheerleading aspect of "You can do this!". Quite often for me, just reading a cheerleading book gives me the motivation to stay the course or make corrections when I run amok. This served that purpose.

My only real concern is for people who are really very early in their journey ---- is there enough hard and fast advice on the how? Maybe, but I just don't know. I would love to hear from a reviewer who is just starting to tackle some of this to get their reaction.

I'm winning again!

I read this book many years ago but it had a different title. I needed some new inspiration and direction. The Organizer Lady did not let me down. I particularly loved the advice to put everything in pretty white boxes. Now I once again have "space" and know that everything is in its place. Great book.

Her other book is better.

I bought this book after reading her other book Organizing Magic. I like Organizing Magic better, because it read faster (more concise) and it was more inspiring (got me moving). They are both great really, but if you want to make a quick change, or if you can get only one of her book, I'd get the Organizing Magic instead. It was more main stream as well- not so religious and personal as the Winning the Clutter War.

Chapter 1 Rebecca Wolstone pushed the small trunk toward the open window of the loft and dropped to her knees in front of it. While her heavy taffy-colored braids coiled across the surface and her fingers stroked the dusty leather, she looked out the window. She had to peer through the branches of the apple tree to see down the hill. In the distance there was the shining strip that was the Mississippi River. Trees and buildings hid the curving bank. “Nau—voo.” Rebecca practiced saying the name as Cynthia would, but her voice lacked the contempt Cynthia’s carried. Her eyes were searching out the white spot on the hill.

In the dark clamor of the town the building rose silent and pure, capturing her imagination, forcing the words: “I’d fancy me a spot, more quiet and holy than any place on earth.” She blinked and tried to focus her sunstruck eyes on the little trunk. “Do you suppose, Ma and Pa, that if you’d a-lived long enough to see that place, it would have changed everything?”

Now tears swelled her eyelids and constricted her throat. She was thirteen. Today was her birthday, this April 15, 1844. Three birthdays ago there had been the three of them—her mother, father and Rebecca. Now there was only Rebecca and the little old trunk.

And the Smyths. She reminded herself as she heard the commotion in the yard below. For just a moment she wanted to hug her loneliness closer, but there was that shrill, demanding whistle. She leaned out the window. Joshua and Jamie Smyth were waving. “Becka, happy birthday!” A flower-laden branch sailed through the window.

Joshua, seventeen, was grinning up at her. “I’d throw you an apple, but since it’s only apple blossom time, have a posy instead.” His eyes were intently studying her face, and she wondered if the tears showed. Joshua was prone to discover her tears before anyone else, and they made him uncomfortable.

Another face danced into view. It was Prudence Smyth. “Looking at your ma’s wedding dress, huh? We remembered it’s your birthday, and Pa has a penny for you. That’s so you won’t be sad because your ma and pa are dead.”

“Rebecca!” The voice seemed to float up the ladder that joined the loft with the kitchen below. “Hurry and do your looking; it’s near suppertime.”

“Yes ’um,” Rebecca settled back on the floor, surprised to discover that her mood of sadness had disappeared. It was the first time in the three years since her parents had died that she was able to lift the lid of the trunk without tears ruining it all. She braced against the window frame and peered inside.

The trunk held only two items, the dress and a little black book. She rubbed her dusty fingers against her faded calico before she peeled back the cocoon of cotton that shielded the silk dress. She touched the lace and the pink velvet rosebuds centered with seed pearls; then she bent to sniff greedily of the musty fragrance.

She tried again to pull the memories of those people back into her life. Each year it was becoming harder to recall their faces, and each year it seemed more important to hold them close. Not that she wasn’t grateful for the Smyths’ taking her in, treating her like kin; it was just this need to draw the reins up tight, to pull all of her past about her.

One thing she did know. The wedding dress worn by her mother was hers. It would be her wedding dress too. Even today her mother’s final words burned through her. Her lips had been blue with the life seeping out of her when she whispered, “Rebecca, take care, guard the trunk. There’s in it your only hope.”

I am glad to know that this writer did a lot of research, because, with the engaging story line, it makes a very good book to give to people who are considering Mormonism.

The book is well-written and could be read easily by a young teenager. In the beginning the lengthy descriptions can be skimmed, but one wants to pay more attention to detail as the story unfolds.

Many mainline Mormons are very kind loving people and I am glad they have renounced this horrid practise. However, knowing this part of their history would cause the reader to take a hard look at the other doctrines, equally bizarre in my estimation, that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young claimed to have heard from 'heaven'.

The beginnings of a move are the foundation of the move and, compared to the Book of Acts, these beginnings are horrifying. I felt just awful as I saw the main character's naivete allowing her to be taken into what she knows is sickeningly wrong. I am just trusting that all will be resolved for the good as I am only halfway through it now.

Another novel I would highly recommend is "The 19th Wife: A Novel" by David Ebershoff. It is longer and much more involved than this book. The author creatively and convincingly takes off on the writings of Ann Eliza Young, who left Brigham Young and went on an effective crusade to have polygamy ended by law, then he intersperses it with a gripping and humorous story of a young man in present times who was expelled from a polygamous offshoot of Mormonism.

Have a good read.

Easy to read, very informative

This book is a very readable presentation of the history of the Jewish people from 539 BC to 70 AD. Most of this is covering the 400 years between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament.

The first chapter, Homeward Bound: The Persian Period, covers the end of of the Old Testament, roughly 539-331 BC. This chapter contains a fair amount of material that would be familiar to you if you've read your Bible -- from the fall of Judah onwards.

While the first chapter was interesting and informative, I found the next chapters to be more worthwhile. Starting with Alexander, and ending with the destruction of the temple in 70AD, the rest of the book fills in a lot of the political events of the times as they pertain to the Jewish nation. Yes, I've learned a lot about Alexander the Great, and even a bit about him in relation to Jerusalem. But what does Hellenism (the civilization and culture of Ancient Greece) have to do with the rise of the Pharisees? I had no idea there was a relationship.

My bottom line: Most of my students (grades 2-9) are studying world history this year. This book is going to be a part of that. Dr. Marty ties together the regular history with fascinating information about how that impacted the Jewish culture. I'm not sure the 2nd and 4th grader will get much from this book, but the 7th and 9th graders most certainly will. And even though he is studying a completely different time period, my 11th grader will be sitting in on this book too.

Shift from Self to Service

Although the initial chapters of this book do address the prophetic ministry of the church, its message is much broader. Loren Sandford addresses the influence of western, and particularly American, culture on the people of the church and how it has blocked us from realizing God's purpose.

This materialistic culture of self-fulfillment, personal prosperity and focus on our own desires affects our worship, ministry, relationships with leaders and our health - emotional, physical and spiritual. The blunt, challenging and loving message that the author prophetically speaks is to renounce the ways of the temporal world and to serve others sacrificially. In short, it is a call to love as God does.

Shifting our focus away from ourselves and towards serving the needs of others would not only purify the prophetic, but also purify those who seek to follow Jesus.

R. Loren Sandford's "Purifying the Prophetic" is a much needed book for the church at this time in history. The prophetic gifts have the potential to be the most mis-used gifts of our Heavenly Father. We live in a nation that is still independent at heart, and only through learning how to walk with God in maturity and healing can we begin to use the gifts He gives properly. A pure prophetic flows from right relationship under authority. Mr. Sandford has given the Church a great book that helps us understand. Thank you!

What I love about this book is that it encapsulates the exact and specific point of failure in the things addressed. It defines and verbalizes the failure (and the true solution) in simple,clear,and accurate measures.

The solution being: embracing and living in the true Spirit of Christ. This book clearly defines and identifies the elements of living out true Christ life minus extra clutter and agendas.

What a word for our times and for the true church! What a call to BE the true church! Of course scripture contains all this truth however we have been subverted from the true meaning of it and through repetitive wrong teaching or preaching missed these VITAL truths in it.

I will be getting more copies for giving away. I already know of a few who would be greatly encouraged and helped by it as I.

Purifying the Prophetic could become a manual for the emerging true church in this time we are coming into. It supersedes any outward circumstances and so, whatever the end of all that's going on the stuff in this book is useful across economical, natural, and even I daresay cultural boundaries (even tho it is focused toward Western culture)

An Absolute "MUST READ" For Every Female

Rick's book was an amazing eye opener into the mind of the male gender. I found it thought provoking, captivating, intriguing and at times downright hilarious.
*Have you ever found yourself frustrated time and time again at the ridiculous, anti-productive conversations with the males in your life?
*Do you get angry at what you perceive as the laziness of your son, nephews, brothers, fathers, husbands or male co-workers, when you are sure they are perfectly capable of what is wanted or needed?
*Does it seem like the harder you try the more frustrated everyone gets as the communication gap becomes insurmountably larger? Does it begin to feel then like you are "nagging"?
* Are you ever shocked to see how busy, loud, defiant or mean your boy seems?
*Are you a single mother bound by guilt that controls your parenting?
*Do you ever ask yourself, "what am I missing here" or "what am I doing wrong" when it comes to busy, macho, daring and fearless boys/men?
If you answered, "yes" to any or all of these, this book is a must read for you. I couldn't believe that such a small book could so thoroughly cover all this and more.
Much to my happiness, I found some pretty simple but undeniable truths in this book that I have put to the test with my son. I am having dramatically different interactions with dramatically different results. I always knew my 14-year-old son, was a good man, I just did not know how to tap into it. I now proudly look at my young man and say, "That's My Son," and he's turning into a real man, a good man, a man of integrity.
Update: It's been quite some time since I wrote this review and felt I needed to update it. My son is now going on 16 and I'm still using the practical, simple principles in this book with AMAZING results!

Excellent insight for mothers of boys!

I'll say at the outset that I'm not a woman. I'm a man. And according to its title, this book is not addressed to me.

But I am a father of three boys (and a girl). I've also served fifteen years as a pastor and counselor, and I've become well acquainted with the frustration and grief of moms (especially single moms) trying to understand the seemingly incomprehensible: juvenile maledom. I've known many males--juvenile and adult--who have been raised by moms who couldn't (or didn't try to) figure them out. And I've known the deeply wounded wives, girlfriends, and children of these boys-become-men-who-remain-boys.

Thank God, moms now have Rick Johnson's book, That's My Son. Speaking from his own experience as a son, a parent of a son, and the coach and seminar teacher of hundreds (maybe by now thousands) of moms--Johnson offers wise, insight-filled, down-to-earth guidance for mothers of boys. He explains how and why boys are different from girls psychologically and spiritually. He shows what boys need in order to become men of strong, healthy character, and how even single moms can find ways to provide for these needs. And he gives practical steps moms can take to raise a boy well--how to communicate in a boy's "language," how to discipline a boy effectively, and several other areas of importance.

Johnson is a great story-teller, and he uses stories from his own experience and that of others, sometimes with humor, always with compassion. I highly recommend this book to any mother of a male.

Worst book ever written??

I, too, was excited after reading all the positive reviews on this book. What a disappointment!!! I think this could easily be the worst book ever written. Outside of personal experience, the author is uneducated on the topic. His view points are just that, personal thoughts with no references or research what-so-ever to back them up. Much of the book is for single mothers or households without a strong father figure. The author spends numerous pages talking about how boys need positive male role models. I think we can all accept that as fact. There is no real mention of how mothers can bring strength to the family unit. I bought this book in hopes of learning pointers as to how to be a better female influence on a male child, and there was none of that. Lastly, although I am a Christian and believe strongly in the role of faith and spirituality in raising a child, this book is over the top in using the bible to reinforce points that are just opinion. I found it almost sacrilegious. In summary, this man has no credentials and I cannot imagine why in the world he wrote a book on mothering, which he clearly knows nothing about. Do not waste your time or your money.
