Evangelism after Christendom: The Theology and Practice of Christian Witness, by Bryan P. Stone

Most people think of evangelism as something an individual does--one person talking to one or more other people about the gospel. Bryan Stone, however, argues that evangelism is the duty and call of the entire church as a body of witness. Evangelism after Christendom explores what it means to understand and put to work evangelism as a rich practice of the church, grounding evangelism in the stories of Israel, Jesus, and the Apostles. This thorough treatment is marked by an astute sensitivity to the ways in which Christian evangelism has in the past been practiced violently, intentionally or unintentionally. Pointing to exemplars both Protestant and Catholic, Stone shows pastors, professors, and students how evangelism can work nonviolently.

From the Back Cover
"Not often, but every now and then, a book comes along that not only draws together the literature of the last thirty years but also pushes the conversation forward for decades to come. Bryan Stone has written such a book. Everyone writing in the field of evangelism cannot go around, only through, this masterpiece."--Leonard Sweet, author of SoulTsunami

"Bryan Stone's Evangelism after Christendom takes the study of evangelism to a new depth. This book brings hope to those perplexed by the popularity of evangelism techniques that seemingly contradict the faithful witness of the church. Evangelism after Christendom, theologically framed and biblically grounded, is essential reading for those seeking an in-depth treatment of evangelism as a constitutive Christian practice."--Laceye Warner, Duke Divinity School

"Bryan Stone has provided a significant contribution to the important, ongoing discussion of what evangelism is and how it is best practiced. Evangelism after Christendom takes seriously Christ's call to bear witness in the North American context in the twenty-first century. He is attentive to issues of ecclesiology, history, and politics, and he carefully considers conflicting theological interpretations of evangelism. This is a challenging and important book for all those who seek to study how the church can embody a truly Christian evangelistic practice."--Scott J. Jones, Bishop, The United Methodist Church

"This book is thoroughly believable. It brings evangelism into the twenty-first century with the wit of a scholar and the force of the church as its champions."--Robert G. Tuttle, author of The Story of Evangelism: A History of the Witness to the Gospel

Well Done
By Chris Chappotin
Evangelism after Christendom is a comprehensive treatment of the definitions, histories, contexts, subversions, environments, and virtues that shape, nurture, and challenge evangelistic practice. The book is significant, because of its thorough review of appropriate literature, movement from theology to practice, and emphasis on the "evangelizing community" and the virtues that originate within this community. Throughout this review, through the purview of reflective critique and agreement, I will summarize the basic arguments of the book and apply these arguments to my context of North American church planting.

Initially, Evangelism after Christendom serves as a prophetic call to the church to reclaim its true and intended evangelistic identity. In the book's introduction, author Bryan Stone states, "The thesis of this book is that the most evangelistic thing the church can do today is to be the church--" (15) Moreover, he provides a specific framework for how this might take shape. Stone continues, "...to be formed imaginatively by the Holy Spirit through core practices such as worship, forgiveness, hospitality, and economic sharing into a distinctive people in the world, a new social option, the body of Christ." (15) For Stone, this is the nature of evangelism.

Furthermore, these descriptions serve to construct the framework of what Stone, later in the book, frequently refers to as the ecclesia. However, Stone's attention toward ecclesia begins with a theological foundation of evangelism as practice. Stone uses the work of Alasdair MacIntyre to purport, "A practice is especially important in MacIntyre's overall argument, for it provides the context in which the identity of a tradition is constituted, the narrative meaning of human life is enacted, and the character, virtues, and skills for journeying toward that meaning are displayed and refined." (30) However, as he builds the argument, Stone succinctly asks, "Is evangelism a practice? To the extent that it may be so understood, it likewise employs a number of varying skills, arts, techniques, and activities. But if evangelism is a practice, it is never reducible to any of these..." (31) Next, Stone clarifies his reference to MacIntyre by involving James McClendon's description of a "game." I found this metaphor to be quite helpful in describing evangelism as practice. Stone unpacks evangelistic practice through the lens of McClendon's "four necessary elements to a game: (a) an end or goal, (b) the means to that end, (c) the rules by which the game is played, and (d) the proper attitude in playing." (32) Finally, throughout the rest of the book, Stone structures his assertion of evangelism as practice upon the pillars of narrative, social context, and virtue.

In Evangelism after Christendom, Bryan Stone assembles a case for evangelism taking place in a narrative context. In other words, as Stone articulates, "This story [the story of the people of God], with its various characters, subplots, twists, turns, and surprises, literally `makes sense' out of the Christian life by depicting its beginning, way, and end and thereby orienting us on a journey." (55) At this point, however, I would take slight exception with Stone's description. Perhaps, it is not the story of the people of God, but instead, the story of the God of the people. As Gary Holloway and Earl Lavender state in their book, Living God's Love: An Invitation to Christian Spirituality, "...the main character in my autobiography is not me, but God." Nevertheless, during this portion of the book, with outstanding thoroughness and meaning, Stone walks the reader through the stories of Israel, Jesus, and the early church. As an underlying form of foreshadowing, through his articulation of "the story of the people of God," Stone lays the foundations for his later call to ecclesia.

Before Stone arrives at his call to ecclesia, his pilgrimage winds through potential rival narratives of "the story of the people of God." For the purposes of his book, he tells the story of two main rivals: "The Constantinian Story" and "The Story of Modernity." For me, this was a meaningful portion of the book, because of the immediate application to my context of North American church planting. I find myself as a resident in a church culture that still bears many marks of Christendom, and a suburban culture that reflects the categories of secularization, religious pluralism, and consumerism as described by Stone. In response to these cultural frameworks, Stone asserts, "Only insofar as the church is itself a visible communion, a material culture, a form of life, an embodied social imagination, a public, a politics and economics in its own right, will it pose a threat to the individualization and subsequent massification of persons inherent in the modern invention of sociality and its institutional offspring." (170) With experience to reflect upon, I concur with Stone's assessment. Furthermore, for Stone, the church embodies this description by communally subversive means choosing not to opt into a dominate culture of individualism, marketing, and choice. In rebuttal to the dominate culture, Stone writes, "The question we must ask is whether the church is the eschatological sign and living demonstration that the end of time has come or whether it is to be viewed in strictly functional terms..." (168) Throughout this section of the book, Stone remains true to his prophetic calling toward the church to be the church.

Next, as a specific element within Stone's calling toward the church to be the church, he launches a section of the book in which he unpacks the ecclesia as witness and invitation. First of all, the ecclesia serves as a witness to the reign of God. In support of this point, Stone says, "The new creation to which evangelism witnesses is God's peaceable reign--a work of prophetic imagination that both demands and makes possible a distinctive reordering of loyalties, priorities, and relationships and of the way power and resources are shared and distributed." (177) For me, this prophetic call, or maybe better stated, a prophetic community living out this way of life ("God's peaceable reign"), is much needed in my suburban context. Ironically, for Stone, the second service of ecclesia involves invitation. As Stone reveals, "The practice of evangelism announces and embodies this imaginary even as it seeks to invite and initiate persons into it through a fully material formation into a people, a Spirit-created social option in space and time." (177) Stone continues to describe witness and invitation in terms of cruciform politics and economics. In other words, his suggestions for evangelism after Christendom find root in the practices of ecclesia instead of the propositional truth and scientific methods of modernity. As a result, conversion must be viewed in terms of process or being continually converted. In a conversation about the measurability of evangelism, Stone concludes, "If evangelism can be `measured' at all, perhaps it can best be measured by how well a community prepares a place at its table for those who are not there yet, for those who have not even heard, much less heeded, its invitation." (274) In Evangelism after Christendom, the ecclesia embodies and invites people into "God's peaceable reign."

Finally, in what, in my opinion, is actually a discussion about spiritual formation, the author digs into the character of the evangelist who would proclaim (or live out) such a life ("God's peaceable reign") in ecclesia. Basically, Stone summarizes the "martyrdom and virtue" of the evangelist in the following four characteristics: presence, patience, courage, and humility. I found the "churchwomen," Oscar Romero, and the Common Cathedral to be prophetic exemplars of Stone's description of the evangelist, and consequently, stories saturated with conviction. This portion of the book left me introspective as to how I, through the power of the Holy Spirit, might exhibit such virtues in my church planting context. These pages of Evangelism after Christendom and my Tuesday night covenant group's study through Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden simultaneously ushered me into Jesus' words in Luke 9.23-24: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it." As evangelists who are also participants in ecclesia may we "come after" Jesus with such Spirit-fueled intensity that our evangelistic practice spreads through the virtues of presence, patience, courage, and humility.

Evangelism after Christendom provides an extensive theological framework for discussion concerning evangelism in a post-Christendom context. I would recommend it as a worthy, cost-effective investment for any church leader discerning God's prophetic call toward the engagement of such a post-Christendom culture with the story of God or desiring a full description of evangelistic practice. Bryan Stone's treatment of practice, narrative, history, ecclesia, and virtue contribute thorough scholarship, thoughtful critiques, and meaningful applications in the context of any discussion concerning evangelism. Stone set a course to prophetically challenge the church to be the church, and in Evangelism after Christendom, he remains true to this end.

A Form Of Religion That Does Not Seem To Need The Biblical Church
By Jacques Schoeman
'What the gospel needs most is... disciples who follow Jesus with or without the support of their culture. It does, however, require a people that has been made into the temple of God in which the Spirit dwells, built upon the church's only secure foundation, Jesus Christ.' p 12

Bryan Stone is good at what he does. He has the intellectual capacity to pursue the biblical instruction of the Great Commission. His theology is mission-centric which typifies the structures incorporated and identifiable with missions. The introduction is short of staggering - it is breathtaking. It convinces and succeeds in its emotional plea for a return to making evangelism a priority again. Stone accurately and scholarly brings the 'North American' mega-churches to their knees, but also knows that it is their hearts that are at fault.

'On this view, any evangelism for which the church is irrelevant, an afterthought, or instrumental cannot be Christian evangelism. It is within such a social imagination that salvation is able finally to be construed as 'a personal relationship with Jesus' and thus something that takes place outside, alongside, or as a substitute for the church.' p 17

As with most Reformed evangelicals, I struggle to find the balance when focusing on the lost, and our obedience to the biblical text. The question of election is one I completely hold, yet the practice of Christian witness is surely intended for the lost primarily, though not exclusively? The author knows how to challenge these views, and he succeeds only to the degree that we allow him to inter-act with our own, because he never dogmatically lays it on the line. Instead, he prefers to be instructive and informative towards the ecclesia. The challenge of our mercy toward the lost being divine or human, is superseded by how he brings the topic to be a matter of the heart's response to and guidance by the Holy Spirit. Such is His penetrative ability!

'The church is inevitably a counterpolitics insofar as it is shaped by the politics of God's reign rather than the politics of the city or nation in which it finds itself.' p 179

So I heartily enjoyed this book, even though it fell beyond the praxis of my own doctrinal beliefs. It was informative to the point that it made me realize that at no time does one person have exclusive rights to the whole truth of God and His plan of redemption.

'To assign the church this sort of centrality is not, however, to reduce God's reign to the church, or to make it identical with the church. It is rather to construe the church as a people whose confession of God as sovereign is embodied in its politics.' p 189

An Alternate Kingdom book
By Tim
I write and speak some about the concepts of Christians living in God's Alternate Kingdom while temporarily living at a postal address in this world. Stone's book serves as one of my reference texts in this area. It's a very good read for guidance on living as a Christion in modern, liberal, western cultures. A professor friend of mine, Dean Fleming, recommended the book to me. As it turns out, he studied with Bryan Stone. This book is worth a read for any serious Christian who wants to understand the world in which he/she is living.

A Case for Amillennialism: Understanding the End Times, by Kim Riddlebarger

Amillennialism, dispensational premillennialism, historic premillennialism, postmillennialism, preterism. These are difficult words to pronounce and even harder concepts to understand. A Case for Amillennialism is an accessible look at the crucial theological question of the millennium in the context of contemporary evangelicalism.

Recognizing that eschatology--the study of future things--is a complicated and controversial subject, Kim Riddlebarger provides definitions of key terms and a helpful overview of various viewpoints. He examines related biblical topics as a backdrop to understanding the subject and discusses important passages of Scripture that bear upon the millennial question.

Regardless of their stance, readers will find helpful insight as Riddlebarger evaluates the main problems facing each of the major millennial positions and cautions readers to be aware of the spiraling consequences of each view.

What does the Bible actually tell us about the end times, and how has the church traditionally understood it?

In a clear and accessible manner, Kim Riddlebarger presents and defends amillennialism--the belief that the millennium is a present reality centered in Christ's heavenly reign, not a future hope of Christ's rule on earth after his return--as the historic Protestant understanding of the millennial age.

Recognizing that eschatology--the study of future things--is a complicated and controversial subject, Riddlebarger begins with definitions of key terminology and an overview of various viewpoints and related biblical themes. He then discusses key passages of Scripture that bear upon the millennial age, including Daniel 9, Matthew 24, Romans 11, and Revelation 20. Finally, he evaluates the main problems facing each of the major millennial positions and cautions us to be aware of the consequences of each view.

This expanded edition includes a new foreword from Michael Horton, a new chapter on the antichrist, a new chapter on signs of the end, and several helpful charts and indexes.

"For combining thorough exegesis, readability, and lucid argumentation on this important subject, this volume has no peers."--Michael Horton, author of Christless Christianity

"By careful examination of the key biblical passages, Dr. Riddlebarger will help and encourage Christians both to understand the real teaching of the Bible and to appropriate the blessing of this truth."--W. Robert Godfrey, president and professor of church history, Westminster Theological Seminary in California

"Carefully argued, clearly and charitably written, this work brings needed balance and sense to the debate over the subject of the millennium."--Cornelis P. Venema, author of The Promise of the Future

Kim Riddlebarger (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is senior pastor of Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim, California, and visiting professor of systematic theology at Westminster Seminary California. A REFORMED PASTOR EXPLAINS THIS VIEWPOINT
By Steven H Propp
Kim Riddlebarger is senior pastor of Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim, and visiting professor at Westminster Seminary California. He is also cohost of the 'White Horse Inn' radio program, and author of The Man of Sin: Uncovering the Truth about the Antichrist. He wrote in the Introduction to this 2003 book, "My purpose is to set forth the historic Protestant understanding of the millennial age. This position is commonly known as amillennialism and is centered in the present reign of Jesus Christ. Amillennialism is grounded in redemptive history, the historical acts of God as they unfold in the Bible to provide for the salvation of his people. Although it is commonly argued that amillennarians do not believe in any millennial age... this is not the case. Amillenarians believe that the millennium is a present reality... not a future hope." (Pg. 11)

He explains, "Amillennialism was not recognized as a distinct position until around the turn of the twentieth century. Until then, amillenarians called themselves postmillennial because they believed Christ would come back after the millennial age, but they were different from traditional postmillenarians in that they did not believe in an earthy millennial age yet to dawn." (Pg. 31)

He observes, "Notice that all these events (the judgment of both believers and unbelievers, the day of the Lord, the last trumpet, and the restoration of all things) occur at the same time---at the return of Christ. Nothing was said or implied to lead us to believe that Christ returns to set up his kingdom or that a one-thousand-year gap lies between his second advent and the final judgment. Based on the clear biblical texts that we have seen above, no such lengthy intervals are found in any passage individually or collectively. The premillennialists read these lengthy intervals into the biblical text." (Pg. 93) He adds, "we can have no doubts that the last day, the last trumpet, the day of the Lord, raising of the dead, and the judgement of people will be concomitant events." (Pg. 137)

He suggests, "To look for a rebuilt temple, to Jesus sitting on David's throne in an earthly Jerusalem, to babies being born and daily life continuing after Christ's return empties the kingdom and the 'age to come' of its eternal character." (Pg. 110) He argues, "One of the most telling criticisms [of premillennialism] is the language used by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18... Three times in the passage, Paul used terminology to convey the idea that Jesus Christ's return to earth will be accompanied by divine announcements which are clearly universal in nature.... The whole thrust of the three-fold announcement is that God Himself will proclaim the return of Jesus Christ so loudly that the whole world will hear. Not only so, but the world will also witness the subsequent catching away of believers (v. 17). If dispensationalists are correct in saying that this coming is a secret, then only believers will hear the divine declaration." (Pg. 143)

He points out, "Revelation 20:7-10 raises a number of problems for all millenarians... given that the satanically inspired revolt of the nations John described occurs after the general resurrection and when there cannot be people in natural bodies on earth nor can there be people on earth who have not passed through the final judgment. Who are these people who revolt against Christ? Who are these who are consumed by fire? Are these people in unresurrected bodies? If so, where do they come from? How do they pass through the judgment at the beginning of the millennial age? Are these people the redeemed? Such is unthinkable. The presence of evil in the millennial age is a problem from which all forms of premillennialism cannot escape." (Pg. 223) He adds, "How do people living on earth at the time of Christ's second coming escape the resurrection and the judgment?... premillenarians must explain the identity of these people in unresurrected bodies living during the millennium. How do we account for people who are not judged or raised from the dead at the time of our Lord's second advent? This is especially problematic since Jesus himself taught that in the age to come his people will all be children of the resurrection." (Pg. 232)

This detailed book will interest not only amillenarians, but others studying biblical prophecy.

A Compelling Case for Amillennialism
By Daniel Glover
Kim Riddlebarger's book, A Case for Amillennialism, is a compelling case for Amillennialism. It is not, however, a convincing case. If you are coming to this book to convince you that Amillennialism is the true eschatology, you will not find it here. You will only find it in the Bible. But Riddlebarger does make a compelling case for it. Unfortunately though, much of this book seemed to me to be a polemic against Dispensationalism/Pre-Trib. Premillennialism- indeed, almost exclusively! It was striking how little he seemed to interact with Historic Premillennialism or (more understandably) Postmillennialism. I will give him this: his critique of Dispensationalism is very much needed in modern evangelicalism's thought/theology, as it is often assumed to be the only eschatological stance. However, I would have preferred him to spend more time on Historic Premillennialism than he did. I digress...
His arguments are easy to understand and his writing style is easy to follow. He defines his terms at the very beginning (as any good writer should) and so makes it (at least mostly) easy for even someone new to theology to understand. However, I'm quite sure it would be quite difficult to follow what he is saying if one does not have a decent knowledge of Scripture. What I mean is this: if you don't read the Bible, this book will not be very beneficial to you. You will not be able to see how he is right or where he is wrong. That being said, I think that this book does have much to offer to he who wants to understand an eschatology that actually makes a bit of sense or holds together when held up in the light of Scripture. I think Riddlebarger does a very good job of describing and making a compelling case for Amillennialism.
Read it all and read it well.

A Masterful Case

Since its appearance in 2003, I've regarded Kim Riddlebarger's "A Case for Amillennialism" as the most thorough, well-written and compelling book in favor of the view that Christ's return will occur at the very time of the bodily resurrection, final judgment and cosmic renewal. Now, in this 2013 expanded edition, with two new chapters, plus the addition of both a subject index and a scripture index, this volume will prove even more useful to those who wish to explore what the Bible says about the end times. It takes its stand with the works of Anthony Hoekema, Cornelis Venema and Sam Storms as the cream of the crop in matters of things to come.

A Complete Christian Education Resource

"This volume will become a major resource text for church leaders, as well as Christian education leaders who are professors of Christian education"
-Lester C. Blank Jr., from the foreword

Successful Christian education ministry is built on strong foundations. Yet Christian education is often steeped in misunderstanding and misconception. Although grounded in biblical studies and theology, Christian education seeks to integrate these areas with a variety of social sciences including education, sociology, and psychology. Michael Anthony has created an outstanding guide to this integration that fills the need for an introductory textbook providing an overview and understanding of the broad range of subjects included in Christian education.

Introducing Christian Education begins with a discussion of the theological historical, and philosophical bases for Christian ministry. From there it examines contributions of the social sciences through the lens of biblical teaching. Another section is dedicated to the organization and administration of ministry. The final two sections apply Christian education theory to various age groups and specialized areas of the population. This book will help ministry leaders design programs that integrate the changing needs of contemporary society with the unchanging truth of God's Word.

How to make complex problems into successful opportunities.
By Alex MacCalman
Excellent handbook of decision analysis! The book is easy to read with a logical content structure that lays out the essential components of a decision process. Everyone who is interested in decision analysis should read this book to understand not only the mathematical hard skills, but most importantly, the soft skills that are essential for the successful application. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is faced with a complex decision involving multiple stakeholders, conflicting objectives, and uncertainties.

Good book, though not really a handbook
By John Schuyler
In about 400 pages, the authors present a broad selection of topics about the art and practice of decision analysis. They devote considerable space to the soft, people skills of the capable decision professional. Good advice overall. Quantitative, analytical details are brief, though there are ample examples of presentation outputs. I would have liked more technical details and worked examples.
This would have been a better "handbook" with a thorough index and having an aggregated single glossary. I found the online PowerPoint presentations mildly interesting and the spreadsheets ... not so much.
Overall, this book is worth the serious reader's time and money.

A Favorite Author Among Teen Girls

Most young women yearn to be chosen, to be called out from the crowd and loved for who they are. In The Divine Dance, Shannon Kubiak Primicerio acknowledges this desire and likens teen girls to dancers, constantly performing to please the "audiences" in their lives. But in family, peers, teachers, and others, young women forget that they were created to perform for God alone. Promicerio provides readers with guidance and encouragement to stop dancing for the world and to start dancing for an audience of One.

STOP DANCING FOR THE WORLD'S APPLAUSE AND
Step into God's Studio

We want to be liked--that's why we put so much energy into pleasing others. Life has become a dance that we perform for ohers, auditioning for a place in the hearts of everyone we meet. We put our energy into performances to please our parents, friends, teachers, boys--even people we don't know. It's simple: We all desire to be loved and accepted.

But in this busy, complicated world, we should be dancing as we were designed to--for the One who really cares. When the audiences are gone and we take off our masks, that's the part the Director likes best. Away from the alluring lights and demanding crowds, we can know ourselves and God in a powerful, meaningful way. When we realize that the One who matters already loves us, we will flourish in this life that is the Divine Dance.

About the Author

The Divine Dance: If the World is Your Stage, Who Are You Performing For?
By Mark Greening
My 15 year old daughter loved this book! - She hardly put it down, took notes and has now lent it to a friend. My daughter is a dancer and could really relate to the book - well done to the author!

Great devotional for Dancers or Performers!!
By jbdancer
I am a dance teacher at a Christian studio and this book caught my eye as a possibility for devotions for the kids.
We have one chapter left and we have been reading about half a chapter each week at the beginning of a ballet class that has 11-18 year olds in it. I've skipped a few lines or paragraphs to make it appropriate for the 11 year old, but so far it has been awesome.
The dance analogies, especially in the first chapter are beautifully written. The girls have literally sat silent just listening glued to the book. But then at the end of each chapter are great discussion questions. We have had some awesome discussions and the kids have opened up about their lives as well as are really getting a solid foundation for how to follow God in this world.
This book has been so wonderful for these dancers because the book uses things like wearing masks or costumes as analogies for masks we put on in life. It talks about performing for an audience of one and as dancers again...fantastic analogies. Each chapter has a dance analogy that applies to regular life as well as can be used as dancing for God...if that makes sense...
I LOVE this book and would highly recommend it for any teen or even young adult who is in dance or theatre especially. The analogies will really hit home, its beautifully written, and it's SO relevant to teenagers. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

Who are you performing for?
By Hannah
This book would make a great gift for any young woman, but especially those that are into performing through dance, song, theatre, etc.- it calls the reader to realize that we are performers for an audience of one- God- and that in the end, our attention must turn toward Him in order for us to be truly fulfilled. The author discusses how young women are constantly looking to others for attention and affection- everyone always wants to put their best foot forward, but she delves into the beauty of a life free of the pressures of others pulling on you from every direction- free to dance for your Creator. Rather than being focused on earthly trophies, our eyes should seek heavenly ones: this book will be a beautiful addition to any library, but particularly to the library of someone who loves to perform, but desires to serve God with her whole heart.

An Excellent book!
By Kathy Hensley
With the strong heart of a pastor who has ministered to grieving friends, but more importantly with the broken heart of a parent who has experienced the grief of losing a son, Kirk Neely leads us through the grief process in this special book. His personal walk with grief makes this not just a book with facts about sorrow, but a book that touches and teaches the heart. Neely writes with tender love and care and just enough humor to provide relief. This is a book to keep!

Encouragement, Comfort, and Hope
By Richard R. Blake
Pastor and counselor, Kirk H. Neely, writes with compassion and empathy. In "When Grief Comes", Kirk shares from a heart of understanding and brokenness as he relates the tragic loss of his young adult son, Erik. In his over forty years of ministry, Pastor Neely has counseled hundreds of bereaved and their families, as he conducted services for their deceased loved ones.

The format of the book lends itself to reading as a whole or in small portions. The comprehensive table of contents enables the reader to choose a specific area of interest, for personal comfort, for information, or for use in offering encouragement and comfort to others.

Part one covers the six stages of the grief process and the phase's of grief during extended illness. Part two deals with attachments and separations, grief in adulthood, and helping children with grief. Part three reminds the reader of the gifts of grace and the tender mercies of God as well as offering hope in the midst of grief. Another unique feature of the book is a compilation of selected Scriptures which offer comfort and encouragement in the bereavement process.

In recent years my parents as well as four of my siblings have preceded me in death. Earlier this year, I lost a grandson in a tragic death. This book has given me insights which are helping me through the healing process and sorrow of grief. Of the several books on the subject I have read during these ensuing months, I would put Kirk Neely's "When Grief Comes" at the top of the list as most helpful.

Practical Help in a Time of Need
By Robert Whitlow
I read Kirk Neely's book following the death of my twenty six year old daughter in law. Katie was pregnant with a baby boy when she succumbed to an aggressive form of leukemia. Like Dr. Neely, I've lost numerous relatives over the years, but this particular death devastated me like no other. When Grief Comes provided an understanding of the grief process and God's place in it that I found invaluable. The first section of the book specifically addresses issues unique to sudden death scenerios and enabled me to release myself into a healthy grief, realizing that the river of sorrow flows where it wills until finding its place in God's comfort. The yearning for a departed loved one never completely goes away, but we can eventually live in a new reality. When Grief Comes makes its points succinctly yet contains effective and poignent anecdotes from Dr. Neely's life and ministry. Every pastor or person touched by deep loss should have this book available. It remains on my night stand.

Prophecy and Hermeneutics (Studies in Theological Interpretation): Toward a New Introduction to the Prophets, by Christopher R. Seitz

A fresh wave of studies on the prophets has appeared in recent years. Old Testament scholar Christopher R. Seitz has written Prophecy and Hermeneutics as a way of revisiting, from the ground floor up, what gave rise to studies of the prophets in our modern period. In addition, Seitz clearly shows that a new conceptuality of prophecy, hermeneutics, history, and time is needed--one that is appropriate to current views on Isaiah and the Twelve. Scholars, students, professors, and theological libraries will find this an essential foundational resource.

From the Back Cover
"It is rare when reviewing a book to recognize that a profound paradigm shift is being proposed that deeply affects how the Old Testament prophets are to be understood. Building on over two decades of probing, critical exegesis, Christopher Seitz now offers a magisterial overview of the entire field and outlines a new and brilliant hermeneutical synthesis of biblical prophecy that restores the centrality of the canonical Scriptures to the church."--Brevard S. Childs, Yale University Divinity School

"Building on the long history of prophetic introduction and interpretation, Seitz offers a new way of viewing the prophets. He takes the realities of time and history with utmost seriousness but also attends to the hermeneutical implications of the present form of the prophetic books. The future of theological interpretation of Scripture depends on such breakthroughs as Seitz offers in these pages. We will have to read the prophets differently henceforth."--Patrick D. Miller, Princeton Theological Seminary

"Chris Seitz is one of the most insightful and creative biblical theologians working in the field today. In this book he shows us how traditional historical-critical readings have brought us to an impasse and then marks out a bold new path with his own proposal to take the canonical form of prophetic literature seriously. No one will look at the prophetic corpus in the same way after being tutored by Seitz."--Gary Anderson, University of Notre Dame

"Seitz has offered a fresh and bold proposal for understanding the formation and theological significance of prophetic literature. In rich dialogue with Gerhard von Rad and building on recent scholarly research devoted to the Book of the Twelve, Seitz discerns a process of 'figural integration' in prophetic literature. Prophetic words were, in his judgment, fulfilled, not in some simplistic fashion, but over the course of time and, ultimately, in the New Testament. All those interested in prophetic literature and the character of Scripture will find this volume both challenging and useful."--David L. Petersen, Emory University

"This is a highly interesting book. Christopher Seitz shows in detail how historical questions about the different books within the Twelve are useful and even necessary but that they must finally move into an understanding of the text in its final form. It can be expected that this book will cause a vivid methodological discussion."--Rolf Rendtorff, Heidelberg University

Not an Introduction to the Prophets
By Stuart Bloom
This is NOT an "Introduction to the Prophets," as the title and the blurbs imply. It is rather a book about what an introduction to the prophets should be. It is decidedly not for the general reader, even for the general reader with some knowledge of the OT. The author assumes that readers already have in-depth knowledge of the 12 minor prophets.

Plowing New Ground
By Gary C. Leedes
I have great respect for Christopher R. Seitz and I am a big fan of his. I have read two of his other books and I have read several contributions by him contained in other books. He is simply brilliant, a scrupulous scholar, and his point of view is based primarily on the Canonized Holy Scriptures although he is not afraid to gain insights from other sources of information. This particular book plows new ground and therefore is not as easy to read as some of his earlier work. I need to re-read it. I think its worth the time and effort. In this effort, he is working with other pioneers to enlarge both our knowledge and perspective. Perhaps, when I re-read "Prophecy and Hermeneutics," I can add another star or two to my rating, but I am a tough grader, so do not think I am implying this is just a mediocre effort.

Refiguring the Figuration of the Prophets
By Joshua Butcher
Previous reviews have made the language and style of Seitz writing a significant factor against it. While I agree that Seitz style is not the most friendly, one must take into account his primary audience: academics who live within a particular (read: narrow) realm of associations and have a particular history to which they owe debts, direct or indirect. Most of what Seitz does in the book is to give an account of this history of Old Testament Studies focused upon the interpretation of the prophets (and in particular, the specific genre of "introduction" to the prophets). Thus, for approximately 2/3 to 3/4 of Seitz work is a review of the literature. The first review is retrospective and dialogic: he is bringing up the past in order to both articulate its basic assumptions and to point out the specific consequences of these assumptions upon the interpretation of the prophets. Once he has formulated this historical account, he can properly begin to acknowledge the difficulties and deficiencies of this now "traditional" approach to the prophets in light of contemporary developments and reconsiderations. This reevaluation constitutes the second review of the literature, and it carries Seitz up to the last portion of the book, where he can begin to sketch a portrait of how an "introduction" to the prophets could look given the new understanding of the prophets that he formulates out of the current literature. If you can approach the book as a sort of "syllabus" for the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, and in particular the Prophetic books, you'll find Seitz language a bit more palatable.

Mr. Spender's review takes account of Seitz's intellectual engagements (Von Rad and canonical-approach scholars), but he laments Seitz's failure to acknowledge or account for the "subjective" nature of the "links" between the prophets. The reason Seitz doesn't address these directly is because he is not advocating any particular reconstruction of these links, but rather attempting to justify the general approach that sees the prophets self-consciously associating their own messages with the prophets' messages that have come before. Identifying the particular ways in which this association takes place is a secondary issue for Seitz, and one that he does not leave entirely unaddressed, since he does acknowledge the necessity of formulating care in discerning what associations are actually there, as opposed to being conjured by the interpreter (one must also note that "conjuring" is a prototypical danger of most OT studies, and especially of those in the school of thought that Seitz is critiquing). The book that Seitz is writing is really a first formulation of and justification for the "figural" understanding of the prophets--their inter-associational nature with themselves and the rest of the Old Testament; and how this approach anticipates the NT use of the OT.

Seitz book really is a masterpiece of scholarship both in its acknowledgment of previous tradition and its pushing the issue for new developments that deepen and even succeed over previous understandings and approaches. I hope that the book becomes a paradigm shifter in the study of the exegesis of Christian Scripture.
