Excellent Read!!!!

Great read! Complex characters and issues make this a book you won't want to put down! Different than her suspense novels, but still wonderful.

Not your typical romance book

I have never read a book by Irene Hannon that was not suspenseful. I had no idea that she had a history of writing contemporary romance novels, too. I must say that I was quite impressed with how she is able to write so well in both genres. She seems incredibly comfortable to write in two completely different styles of writing. I liked her before, but I like her even more now and am looking forward to her next romance novel coming out in the summer of 2014.

The characters in this book are so real and have such normal difficulties in their lives. They are easy to relate to and your heart can't help but go out to them. The book covers mostly 4 different people, even though Karen and Val's mom is a big player in the book, as well as Scott's mom.

In the prologue, I had difficulty seeing how these seemingly 4 different people would even cross paths. However, as the story unfolded, I liked watching them learn new things about themselves, forgive, and even learn how to deal with manipulative mothers and ex-husbands. Margaret, Karen and Val's mother, was the hardest person for me to like, as well as Karen's ex-husband. I hated the constant criticism that their mother dished out, but I liked watching Karen stepping out of her comfort zone and hold her ground. I found those parts quite funny because I could see the annoyance that her mother had at that moment!

I hope that Irene Hannon continues to write more romance novels in the future. They aren't the sappy novels, but they are easy to relate to and refreshing. I have a hard time calling them romance because this wasn't your typical romance book. I think it follows life and love in a way that many people go through today.

Less than impressed...

While I was hooked on the characters and the plot from the prologue, I honestly did not enjoy reading this book. I've come to love Irene Hannon for her suspense fiction series, but I was less than impressed with this contemporary fiction novel.

I really struggled with the way this book was written. The conversations seemed choppy, there was a lack of flow during interactions between characters, and the faith-based portions seemed forced and awkward at times.

To be honest, it reminded me of another author's books I used to enjoy reading but have actually stopped reading altogether because while the plot and characters are compelling, the writing lacks the quality I'd come to expect.

If you're looking for a story filled with faith and forgiveness, you may be willing to overlook the level of storytelling quality. I however, give That Certain Summer three stars.

Holy Invitations: Exploring Spiritual Direction

If I could use two words to capture the essence of this book, they would be comprehensive and inclusive--comprehansive in its purpose and inclusive in the audience it serves. Holy Invitations gently invites Christians from many faith traditions to look at spirituality and spiritual direction, and to seek completeness. Persons from mainline Protestant and Evangelical traditions, or those who direct them, would be comfortable with the text and enlightened by the content.
The author, Jeannette Bakke, a long-time spiritual director and eductor, combines theory with practical application. The book challenges Christians to pay attention to their inner movements, their journey, and their prayer. Each chapter ends with reflection questions and exercises that guide readers to take a serious look at their relationship to God. These are contemplative pauses for processing the material into one's faith life.
People who are not familiar with spiritual direction as well as veterans can gain insight from this work. The first section, "Introduction to Spiritual Direction," includes basic information: what it is, why one seeks direction, what happens in a session, how to choose a director, group spiritual direction, and a charted comparison of direction, counseling, mentoring, and discipleship.
The mid-section includes a synthesis of topics relavant to spiritual direction: experiencing God, scripture, prayer, discernment, and Christian disciplines. The scripture portion offers a unique insight into Jesus as a spiritual Director. "Jesus taught and offered direction to his disciples and others before and after the resurrection. In each case he spoke to their personal situation within the framework of God's faithfulness and invited them to recognize God's loving presence and availability to guide and bless." (p. 179) This statement is followed with examples from the gospels; the section is invaluable for directors who work with people from primarily Bible-based faith traditions.
Later in the work, Bakke presents more advanced topics such as: benefits of direction, unhealthy dependencies, director's and directee's roles, the shaping of spiritual language, use of scripture in direction, facilitating Chrisitan disciplines, use of humor, and the process of discernment.
Today with so many Protestants seeking spiritual direction, Holy Invitations is a welcome text. It invites a larger audience to consider spiritual direction as one tool that can enhance a person's journey with God.

Why ruin an excellent book by leaving out an index???

This is one of the most brilliant compiliations of solid information on the many dimensions of spiritual direction that I have ever seen. As a seminary faculty member who covers direction in a variety of ways both in formation as well as in the training of clergy, I have found the breadth of what is covered is amazing. She clearly articulates the pitfalls and discernment issues that are involved in direction as opposed to pastoral care. Her section on discerning whether or not to pray for healing for a directee is worth the price of the book! The lack of a topic index seems unforgivable in this day and age of publishing and detracts immensely from the usability of the book as the solid reference that it could be.

If you are looking for a solid, rich-filled text on the essence and practice of spiritual direction this is the one book to have on your shelf....and one to pick up often! The author leads one to explore the dynamics of the direction relationship in a way that emphasizes the presence of the Holy as the central element in any direction relationship. What a total gem of a book!

An Epic and Unforgettable Journey: a Story of Strength in Weakness

The Tales of Goldstone Wood are an intricately woven collection of original and edifying fairy tales. Dragonwitch is the fifth installment in this series. This tale weaves together multiple plotlines to create a glorious adventure.

Lady Leta of Aiven and Lord Alistair of Gaheris Castle are betrothed and prepare for a marriage they do not want. Leta is plagued by her own self-doubts and inadequacies. Alistair is plagued by harrowing nightmares of his own death. Mysterious voices cry for release from a family crypt, and immortal beings seek to gain ascendency over mortal ones. All hope rests in the reunion of two important tools, a sword and lantern borne by two immortal brothers that will bring restoration to a ravished land. Unlikely heroes will be chosen to accomplish impossible things.

I loved the exploration of important themes within this novel, particularly the author's defense of fairy tales. As one character states, "You'll rarely find more truth than in Faerie tales" (Sir Eanrin). I also loved the exploration of what truly makes a person strong. Protagonists and antagonists are beautifully and vividly portrayed, and the reader sees striking contrasts between them. We meet characters who are seemingly weak, and we meet characters who are seemingly strong. Our hearts soar as we cheer for the former and our hearts break as we weep for the latter. The verses from 1 Corinthians 1:25 ran through my mind as I read this novel: "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the strong." My favorite character in the novel is Mouse, a young urchin with a mysterious past.

Please give this riveting story a chance. Read a fairy tale that vividly reflects the truth. God bless you all and happy reading.

Beyond the Final Water falling...won't you return to me?

I read Dragonwitch after all the other novel in the Tales of Goldstone Wood series. I found the third book Moonblood at a friends house and it peaked my intrest. Several reviewers have stated that Dragonwitch was to hard to understand. Believe me I sympathise completely! It took at least half of Moonblood before I began to really get into the feel of it, and Dragonwitch's storyline is even more complex.
Some may have called this a standalone novel. That it most certianly is not! I would definitely recomend that you read the books in order! It will help you relate better to Goldstone Wood and the older characters (meaning those not introduced in Dragonwitch) such as Eanrin, Imraldera, The Dragonwitch, and the Prince of Farthestshore.
If you are a fantasy fiction fan and don't mind a little confusion early on (or have read the other novels) then grab your Kindle and enter Goldstone Wood, brave warrior!

Excellent

Wow.

I passed by Stengl's earlier books -- interested (kinda), but "meh" in my response to the titles and story descriptions. Probably my own preconceived notions about about Faerie anything.

This book, though? It caught my interest with the Chronicler and Alistair, and kept it all the way through.

I wasn't sure about the third-person omniscient point of view -- going from one character's head to another's within the same scene -- but Stengl handles it well, sliding smoothly from one person to another, and thereby lending an old-fashioned feel to the story.

The characters are intriguing, with unexpected dialogue, actions, and identities. I like how Stengl brings seemingly disparate stories together, revealing that we've really been reading one story all along. My favorite was Einrin, the shapeshifting, witty, arrogant knight-poet-cat-man.

And I don't even like cats.

I won't spoil the story with a summary or a reveal of any plot twists. I will say I was surprised ("Ah ha! So THAT'S ____!") several times by who someone or what something was, a nice change from much I've read lately.

Channeling, I think NOT

I am a Spirit Filled Christian, and I happen to be a Christian Magician. Because of my experience in BOTH areas I have lots of experience in channeling. If a person is a Christian, the Spirit of God lives in him. 1 John states: Greater is He who is in you (Christian) than he that is in the world." The Apostle Paul states that "The Spirit of the Prophet is in control of the Prophet." This book in NO WAY is connected with the occult practice of channeling. It is a far and concise look at the gift of tongues. I have spoken in tongues many times and twice it has been recognized as a real languages, neither of which I know. Larry does a great job explaining the whys and whats of speaking in tongues. Buy this and learn. BUT don't be afraid of getting "some other spirit" Jesus said "...How much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask for it" It is completely inconsistent with the character of God (LOVE) to say He would allow an "evil" spirit to come into someone who was asking for the Holy Spirit in accordance with this verse.

A Definitive Work: Holy Tongues 101

This is easily the most grounded and well rounded treatment of the topic of Tongues I have ever read. Period.
I would recommend this book to anyone with interest for or against speaking in tongues. The book is an easy read, and is fair from both sides of the issue, regardless if you are seeking the Baptism of Speaking in Tongues or if you are new to this concept and are wigging out because someone close to you is now talking to you about it. The author makes a very thorough Biblical and Logical case for the baptism in tongues. Well worth the read.
I have been a Pentecostal Christian for over 20 years and was saved while serving in the Army in South Korea. I had many reservations about the baptism in the Holy Spirit as I had only seen this prior to Salvation with televangelists and the sort, of whom I held in distain, being a child of the 90's. This book would have been such a welcome answer to prayer back then with so many questions, and seeing so many abuses in the church of the hyper spiritual, more accurately hyper emotional and showy. He does a great job of parsing the person of the Holy Spirit and the excesses / abuses of some misguided individuals. He, Holy Spirit, is gentle not forceful.

Interactive Bio has come of age

I have read quite a few books by Charles Rivers Editors. I continue to find them worthy of being a touchstone of continued study. We the interactive books were offered I jumped on that option. The video/audio are a superior addition to Churchill's career. The only drawback I have is that it is not interactive on my kindle fire. Fortunately I have a ipad but I would prefer this option on Kindle.

A delightful book set in the Amana Colonies in Iowa. Janice discovers the simple life as her family moves back to Amana so her ailing mother can live out her remaining days in the familiar home of her youth. The interest of not one but two men complicates matters for Jancey. I really loved the sweetness of life in Amana.

I've known "First" for a long time but didn't know his pen game was this good!! When he initially forwarded me the manuscript for Baby Momma I didn't read it because I was hard at work writing "Candy Shop"(tsk tsk I know) I recently purchased it to show my support to a good friend and honestly I still didn't get the chance to read it and instead gave it to my asst Tanisha. She went on and on about how First and Nichelle had actually created a page turner! I then picked it up and couldn't put it down. From the first page to the last OMG the love scenes, the emotion, the DRAMA!! It felt as if I was right there! I KiKi Swinson Co-sign this book and as an Essence Best-selling author I can personally say this is a must read - and the public will fall in love with Nichelle, First and their characters just like I did.

I really enjoyed part 2 things kept coming left and right it kept me on my toes but what really excited me was keyshawn I was rooting for him to get Michelle. I am hopeing that he will comeback like everyone else did. I loved part 2 and I'm praying and waiting for part 3. Very good read

This book was a waste of my money! ! It's not making no sense. This book had so much going on. She should have just stopped on book number 2. I'm going to keep reading, I'm curious what's going to happen to Michelle and Honey.

Triumph for Little Emperors

I cried, laughed, cheered and atop of it all, I absolutely loved the book. Though there were times when I saw the word 'market', and I was not sure if I should skip the paragraph due to what animal part, etc I would learn about next...however I did not miss a word. The flow was incredible and it made the read effortless. Questions I had regarding China were answered, and I (think) I can understand why you keep going back. Those children, the stories from Connie and the Old Man, for me, they grabbed my heart and I would yearn to learn more. Thank you so much for the insight to a complicated yet beautiful land...

A compelling look at the new generation in China

Where the news is full of stories about China's economy and dissidents, Little Emperors is about the details of everyday life in China. Ms. Dionne shares the experience of teaching English to Chinese children in Guangzhou for a year: the dreams of her Chinese teaching assistants, alternately eating snake and going to the new McDonald's, and the odd Bad China Day of pollution, poverty, and frustration. Her students are my favourite characters. Their English skills take off when she teaches them to say "I like ..." and "do you like?" and their favourite game is Bingo. In between teaching, she finds the opportunity to visit Hong Kong for the handover back to China and in Beijing hears an old man's eyewitness account of the Tiananmen Square protests. The observation is detailed and the writing is excellent and often very funny. Ms. Dionne's respect, empathy, and affection for the people she meets make this a great read.

Carl Raschke (Ph.D., Harvard University) is professor and chair of the department of religious studies at the University of Denver, where he has taught since 1984. In addition, he serves as an adjunct faculty member at Mars Hill Graduate School and is the author or editor of twenty books, including The Next Reformation.

For the Church, its Mission, and our Culture

The central question to Raschke's missio-logical book is: "How is the task of the Great Commission, a missional task given by Christ to all his subsequent disciples, to be carried out in postmodern culture?" Raschke delineates the context of `globalization' that we are situated in, specifying several meanings to the slippery term, and ultimately identifies it as inherent to the definition of `postmodern'. He then discusses the transformation of Christianity due to the effects of globalization, a transformation that is seen in the characteristics of decentralization, de-institutionalization, and indigenization. Raschke employs Deleuze's concept of 'rhizome' to describe the structure, growth and manifestation of global-Christianity.

The challenges that Raschke believes are posed to Christianity in the globalization processes are consumerism, the mutation of Christianity into mass-market commodity, and radical Islamism. Rashcke believes that the clash between Christianity and radical Islamism should be not be seen as simply a battle between political libertarianism and fundamentalist totalitarianism, but is rather a clash of revelations, specifically on how the two interpret the promises to Abraham and how eschatology will play out: either Mahdi or Messiah.

What Raschke offers as a responding strategy to the challenges for the global-Christian body, the `GloboChrist' as he calls it, is to emphasize radically the aspect of relation and incarnation in the ontology and development of the church-body and in its missional praxis. He argues that it is best to understand ourselves as primarily relational beings, in that the Trinity is primarily relation between Father, Son and Spirit, and we are made imago dei. In our interaction and missional experience in the era of the postmodern, we are to indigenize, contextualize, or `incarnate', as patterned after the incarnation of Jesus and his kingdom/mission toward us. Raschke gives working and personal examples of churches that exemplify this strategy, such as social justice undertakings in Uganda and contextual ministry in Vienna, Austria.

I recommend this book for those who want to understand the implications of globalization on Christianity, and in particular the missiological aspect. Andrew Jones, aka `Tall Skinny Kiwi', wrote that "this book sums that this book sums up the postmodern European challenge and the church's response better than anything out there right now."

A Glocal Call to Rhizomic/Incarnational Life

Dr. Carl Raschke (Harvard PhD) has written an outstanding book that reads like a personal manifesto of rhizomic encounters. Using the rhizomic philosophical concept of Gilles Deleuze, turning it on its head, and then applying it to Christian ministry, Raschke has challenged us all to think in a new way. His tracing of the global shift in Christian currents provide some of the most important work on this topic to date. This book is not as academic as "The Next Reformation," but makes up for it in readability and personalized narratives. I simply could not put it down, and read it in two sittings. This is the most important book on the Glocal (global/local) Christian movement written this year.
