Good insight into how Mormon culture influences everything

There are a growing number of books dedicated to the discussion of the many facets of Mormonism. Some are great, while others tend to be the same recycled material. There is something different about this book and its approach to Mormonism. Instead of taking the hard-line, doctrinal approach, it focuses 90% of its pages on the LDS culture which is the driving force behind its teachings, how they are put into practice and the subsequent impact on members lives. In short...it is woven into EVERYTHING.

The book's premise is simple. Due to the influence of the LDS church in every part of the believer's life, opening their eyes to the truth of the Bible and how Mormonism contradicts it is better done once certain nuances of how they think and act are understood. He proposes "A new way to share Christ with Latter-day Saints" as the sub-title reads. Let's take a closer look at his proposed way of evangelizing to them.

One of the reoccurring themes Rowe talks about is the LDS Persecution Complex. This is the tendency for Mormons to see most (if not all) questions about their belief system and way of living as an attack. The origin of this deeply ingrained perspective has its roots in the very early days of the church's existence. LDS history often teaches that the early Latter-day Saints (as they will call themselves) were heavily persecuted by those living around them. It is a common belief that these persecutions were un-provoked, and some were. But a closer, more thorough look at the historical accounts show that the Mormons were not the innocent victims being portrayed today. Some examples of this are briefly outlined in chapter 3.

If someone begins to talk with members of the LDS church about their beliefs, it will not take long before you see them pull the persecution card. In many ways, it is a method of protection designed to discredit any information that comes from outside the church that is not "faith-promoting". This can be subjective and will be triggered without intent or warning. This understanding is important to his approach because once you are seen through this lens; the chance of being able to effectively reach-out to that person will be almost non-existent. I did this as a Mormon and have recently experienced it from the other side as well.

As a result of this inclination to shut-down any real conversation once an "attack" is perceived, Rowe suggests that direct questions about doctrine are better kept in our hip pocket until there is more relational trust. I would agree with that based on my own personal experience.

He tells a number of stories of people he has interacted with that ring true to me as a former Mormon. The stories dealt with the different potential reasons Mormons might be inclined to distance themselves from the LDS church. These include a deeper hunger for God, deal-breaking inconsistencies with either doctrine or history and besetting burdens.

Allow me to speak about this last reason. LDS doctrine teaches a type of "conditional grace", a grace that is extended to a person only after they complete certain tasks or demonstrate their continued devotion. When combined with a list of "must-do" rules, the byproduct of this errant teaching of God's grace is a weight that no one can or should carry. Though they may not admit it, many of your LDS friends and family are weighed down by this very thing. The story of Janet demonstrates this. After years of faithful service in the church she told her husband:

"I can`t do it anymore. I can't lift it. My load is just too heavy. I can't do all the things I'm supposed to." She goes on to list the responsibilities she feels obligated to juggle and then says, "I'm just not perfect - I'm never going to be perfect, and I just can't pretend anymore that I am. I've finally admitted to myself that I can't make it to the Celestial Kingdom, so why should I break my back trying?"

This kind of weariness is common and was actually the first reason I stepped away from Mormonism. My heart breaks for people experiencing this. The true grace Jesus offers escapes them but only because they have been presented with a false grace that in no way demonstrates the love and mercy God has for them. Unconditional grace is what every LDS person needs to see and understand.

One of my favorite quotes in the book that I think highlights his plea for Christians to cultivate real relationship with Mormons is when he says, "Let's carefully observe what particular way God seems to be at work in a person's life and think that way as we relate to him or her." It is by partnering with God in what he is already doing that we can show the LDS in our lives the grace, freedom and rest found in Jesus.

The end of the book highlights another need that I experienced as I worked my way out of Mormonism and into Christianity...a welcomed place to land. Understanding the issues most LDS face once out, he identifies areas in which the local Christian church can improve on to make the transition as easy as possible. He also includes a glossary of commonly used LDS terms to help you understand "Mormonese".

While the end of the book can come across as advocating a "soft" approach when discussing doctrine (which I tend to disagree with) I think this book is a must-read for anyone who has someone close to them in the LDS church but is struggling trying to understand and relate to them. Having spent 30 years in the LDS church I can say that they way he presents Mormons is accurate and is full of great insight into how they think and act. Combining the wisdom found in "I Love Mormons" with a basic understanding of LDS doctrine will go a long way in helping you effectively share the truth of the gospel with those who are in need of it most.

Excellent

This book is perfect for those living in, around, or near Mormons. It dispels many misbeliefs about the Mormon religion and it takes the outsider into the religion without bashing, hating, or belittling them. It explains the differences between a evangelical Christian and a Mormon instead of just laying into Mormonism as if they were the most evil of people. Having moved to Utah myself with very little previous Mormon interaction I found this book as a life saver in terms of getting a grasp on everything culture to vocabulary to history. It is a must read for any Christian or non-Christian, in other words, everyone should read it. It is a very easy read as well.

Read this book before ever challenging Mormons!

I was fully prepared to study up on the various problems with Mormon theology and lovingly lay them on a friend of mine, expecting that he'd see his mistake and hopefully change his mind. This book showed me that my idea was clearly wrong. It's not the way to approach Mormons. In fact there is no secret or special way at all. You approach them as you would anybody that you love, with respect and care, and without condescension.
This books deals with the core theological issues but not before explaining real Mormons for who they are- wonderful people with real lives and a strong commitment to their culture and country (and others who aren't so devout- like some Christians).
The book also explains what the approach I was ready to take actually results in- walls going up so thick that the clearest, most well explained and lovingly presented argument will never penetrate them.
The author has lived as an evangelical Christian in the Mormon capital of the world for many years. He knows what happens when you challenge Mormons on their faith, and explains in detail what an improper attitude does to any chance of being taken seriously by them.
Please, please read this book before talking theology with any Mormon, or suggest it to another person you know that will be.

Reel Good Book on Film for Christians

I enjoyed this book. I was glad it wasn't too academic or too technical since I am not an expert on film making or movie criticism. There was good historical information and many examples from a variety of films to help illustrate the author's point of view. I agree Christians need to become more critical consumers of film. Since 95% of people see at least one film per year, it shows that there is tremendous potential for spiritual dialog with friends and family by talking about film. I plan to think through some of the concepts in the "Theological Approaches to Film Criticism" and "Becoming a Film Critic" chapters as I continue to grow in my understanding of film making.

Evangelical theologian recognizes a wideness in God's grace

This volume by Fuller Seminary professor Robert K. Johnston is a readable introduction to film criticism from a thoroughly Christian perspective. Johnston is evangelical in outlook, and yet does not sacrifice his love for cinema to a fearful, fundamentalistic disdain for human culture. Rather, from the outset, he affirms the Christian truth that God's grace is to be found everywhere (what theologians have called 'common grace') and that cinema can be an occasion for a 'revelatory event'. Just as all life is 'sacramental' (that is, every aspect of the world has the potential to show us God), so the movies can help us to transcend to a deeper understanding of God and humanity.
Johnston rightly affirms that a film must first be approached on its own terms (as opposed to viewing it through the lens of a preconceived agenda). Once the audience has participated in the world of the film, then is the appropriate moment to begin the dialogue with theology. For this reason, Johnston's approach is to walk us through the basics of film criticism before applying that to the Christian study of film. On a few occasions, I worried that the author was taking us too far away from the book's stated intention (ie. a book about theology and film in dialogue), but Johnston always seems to be able to bring the material back round to assessing its relevance to the task of theological application.
His examples are far-ranging: theologically, his sources draw from every stream of Christian tradition; his choice of films to be analyzed is eclectic. He frequently homes in on a specific film (eg. Shane, Smoke Signals, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) or set of films (eg. the films of Peter Weir) in order to illuminate and illustrate the points he makes. Overall, Johnston exhibits a healthy attitude towards film, and is a breath of fresh air in an evangelicalism that too often regards films with suspicion and a superficiality that is likely to oversimplify issues of content and theme (such as sexuality and violence).
This book helped me to clarify my own method in approaching film. I have long been a lover of the cinema, and have sometimes found it hard to escape the incongruity of some aspects of this with voices from my fundamentalist past. Johnston is a man after my own heart, and seems able to encapsulate my feelings about film and how the movie experience is essential to the formation of my theology. In one chapter, Johnston addresses this role of cinema in theological method, and provides useful comparisons with various models of theological method (such as the Wesleyan quadrilateral).
I can also credit this book with changing some of my views. For example, I have long had a suspicion of mainstream cinema, almost amounting to a disdain at times. Johnston showed me the fallacy of associating commercialism with artlessness, however. After all, he reasons, didn't Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel on commission? In a sense, my aversion to mainstream cinema (or, perhaps more accurately, the mainstream of the mainstream) was a kind of misconceived snobbery. Johnston's appreciation of film from every corner of the film industry helped me to see my own short-sightedness in this regard.
This is a book I would recommend not just for film-lovers, but for theologians whose knowledge of film may not be particularly wide, but are willing to let the pursuit of the knowledge of God lead them into dialogue with other possible sources of inspiration, namely, the cinema. Johnston presents an accessible overview of film criticism and, in doing so, demonstrates how films can be, in a broad, but real way, means of grace for a Christian wanting to let the knowledge of Christ invade his experience of his culture.

Church, Seminary, and Cinema in conversation.

Johnston, professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary, has put together a fine introduction to cinema through the lense of Christian faith. He notes that for the most part the cinema has displaced the church as the location where we come to wrestle with the deeper questions of meaning, God, and what it means to be human. After chronicling the sometimes testy relationship between the church and the movie industry, Johnston offers a typology of Christian approaches to cinema (basically a relabeled Niebuhr typology). The typology is both a strength and a weakness of the book. Like Niebuhr, it may well be that Johnston is allowing the typology to become little more than a way of stereotyping different approaches that he finds unsatisfactory. That said, I myself found the typology helpful.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is the quality of the reflection that Johnston brings to the various movies he addresses. The book itself models the sort of theological reflection that should be going on in churches and seminaries. There is no knee-jerk reaction to violence or language in this book. Rather, Johnston encourages the audience to watch movies on their own terms before passing judgment on their orthodoxy. This book is a welcome and accessible introduction to the growing interaction between theology and cinema in America. I strongly recommend it as a primer for Christians interested in starting a cinema studies group in a church or seminary.

The Quest of Jubal Kane is very realistic in its approach. It isn't a mushy-gushy romantic western, not is it "I'll gun you down at sundown, you yellow bellied..."
It's mild. Fast paced. Almost like a camera following this person around.
It's an absorbing book, Mr. Bowman knows his stuff. The way he presents it is not overly dramatic nor boring/boring and boring again.

I'm two-thirds of the way through this book and highly recommend it. The author starts out by asserting that the Lord knows what division is like. He feels the pain of a pastor going through a church split; after all, when Lucifer rebelled he convinced 1/3 of heaven's army to join his rebellion. Whatever your church is arguing about, that's not the real issue. The real issue is that the Enemy seeks to divide and will use anything he can to destroy relationships. Frangipane goes on to discuss how strife among the brothers can cause 'little ones' to stumble, including children witnessing discord as well as new believers in Christ. Christ brings unity, Satan brings strife.

Frangipane discusses the true nature of religious ambition and the ways we can do the right things with the wrong motives. He discusses the fact that before you examine your pastor, examine his accuser. There are many spirits within the church that are opposed to unity and devoid of humility. Those are not the spirit of Christ. The Greek word for "devil" actually means slanderer, false accuser or malicious gossip. In the church we must be especially careful to only take the flaws of our leadership to the Lord in prayer (with the exception of serious sin which should be reported to authorities) rather than spreading it all over town. If we are not merciful, we will not be shown mercy. "The moment we begin to self-righteously judge or gossip about another for their failings, we lean a little closer toward our own fall."

The author talks about when leaders sin and how a wounded church can go through the healing process. Also, the importance of intercession for our pastors. "In some ways a fallen but restored pastor has a depth of compassion, a "grace understanding," that makes a wonderful shepherd out of him or her".

We as believers need to be thankful, grateful people. Unfortunately, gossip and grumbling have become so common in churches today that it's been nearly elevated to the status of tradition. We need to get free from the deception of discontent. Frangipane has a chapter titled "Declare War on Grumbling" and challenges his readers to spend the next 30 days without complaining and finding things for which to be grateful. Remember that when you complain, you find fault. Lucifer found fault with Heaven! Paradise wasn't good enough for him. We need to cultivate a culture of gratitude and stop gossiping about church leaders, instead pray for them and remember the good things you love about them. Don't give the enemy a foothold.

God is a God of Order. He established authority. A humble heart submits to authority without grumbling, complaining or inspiring rebellion. He goes on to discuss biblical honor. In America, we value freedom so much that anything that diminishes freedom such as self-denial, honor or compliance are devalued. We tend to reject authority and tradition. However, the Lord throughout scripture talks about honor. I Peter 2:17-18 says we should honor all people and honor the king. These are ideas most Americans don't like. Our tradition of dishonoring people and pointing out their flaws continually does not come from God, but rather from the opposite spirit. There are no perfect leaders. When we expose their imperfections it brings a curse upon us (Genesis 9:22-27). We must show honor because a true Christian respects and esteems all people so that we might reflect the love of God.

I found Frangipane's book to be very eye-opening and enlightening. I am convicted of all the ways I have dishonored my parents, employers, pastors by speaking ill of them and exposing their weaknesses. I'm not sure how I'll become a more positive person except for the grace of God. Thanks, Pastor Frangipane, for this timely word to the church.

- A House United covers most of the bases about Church unity, and is especially practical. Francis does not merely talk about theories but what we should do about it. He gets down to the nitty-gritty like what cause divisions, how to heal divisions and more.
- Example the primary cause of divisions is Christians/members who complain and criticize each other and criticize the leadership of their church. I am not ignorant that our leaders are not perfect, and that they miss many things in the bible but do "I help" by criticizing them?
- One of Satan's greatest strategy is to DIVIDE the Body of Christ.
- R.A. Torrey said, If you want a "BETTER" pastor/leader PRAY for him and then stand back and watch God change him and make him a better leader. Praying Hyde learned this when he started to criticize an evangelist in India but the Lord led Hyde to pray for this evangelist AND primarily to THANK GOD for him. Hyde then saw God change the evangelist, in a few months, to become one of the BEST evangelist in all of India.
- Unity is NOT AN OPTION, spiritual warfare can ONLY be won when we stand together, help one another, and pray for one another. In the O.T. the elders (leaders) ruled (together) in the gate of the city.
- THAT is what we need TODAY: pastors and other leaders, in a city, coming 'TOGETHER' to pray, and to rule in the gate(s) for their city. Ps. 133 God 'commands' a blessing THERE, where brothers dwell together in unity.

The faith threads in the novel are gently woven in, rather than feeling forced or contrived, and the writing is beautifully descriptive without being overdone. The novel ends rather abruptly, leaving the reader wishing for just a bit more, not a particularly bad way to finish. Overall, Kelly's smooth voice and well-crafted writing keep the pages turning.

Doesn't add much to the explanation of Theological Interpretation

This was the first book I ever read on the Theological Interpretation of Scripture, and it was not a good book to start with. It seems the four contributors assumed that the readers were already familiar with what theological interpretation is, and how to engage in the theological interpretation of Scripture.

I was familiar with neither, and spent half the book feeling like I was listening in on a conversation between friends as they discussed some event which only they had experienced.

Since that time (and before I wrote this review), I have read several other books on the topic, and have a better grasp of the subject. But having read those other books, I still don't think that this book added much to the conversation, so I cannot recommend it.

About the Author
Alvin Dueck (PhD, Stanford University), a licensed psychologist, is the Evelyn and Frank Freed Professor of the Integration of Psychology and Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He is coauthor of The Living God and Our Living Psyche. Kevin S. Reimer (PhD, Fuller Graduate School of Psychology) is a faculty member in the School of Education; University of California, Irvine. Educated in the United States and Canada, he holds degrees in developmental psychology, biological sciences, theology and literature.

A Challenge to American Psychology

In Peaceable Psychology, Drs. Dueck and Reimer have written a most compelling, challenging and at times disturbing book about the role of modern American psychology within the growing multi-cultural world, both overseas and here in the United States. The authors, rooted in their Anabaptist tradition, challenge us to reflect critically upon the assumptions, values and unconscious motives that drive our efforts to spread American-style psychotherapy around the world. While modern American psychologists believe that they are helping the world by exporting their knowledge, methods and psychotherapeutic delivery systems, we are in fact, in the opinion of the authors, "doing violence," a cultural violence upon those who we seek to help. We do this violence because in exporting the basic values of the modern western psychotherapeutic establishment, like individualism, secularism, scientism and materialism, we are undermining the culture of non-western clients and cultures. The best alternative, according to the authors, is a "peaceable psychology," a psychology grounded in the radical teachings and servant model of Jesus Christ, which has as its core values assumptions that are often different from modern western psychology.

A Peaceable Paradigm

I am not a psychologist, but I gained a great deal of insight from this book, and the peaceable psychology articulated by Dueck and Reimer could be transferred easily in the terms of a peaceable theology, a peaceable ethics or a peaceable ministry.

In short, Dueck and Reimer are practicing and pleading for a peaceable psychology grounded in the peace-making work of God in Jesus and oriented toward promoting peace with others through entering into their suffering, valuing their differences, dialoguing in their language, respecting their culture and traditions, and learning from their wisdom.

It is remarkable to consider how this peaceable approach to psychology could be applied to other disciplines and areas of ministry. Consider youth ministry. Can you imagine the effectiveness of a youth ministry grounded in the person and work of Jesus and oriented toward bringing peace into the lives of adolescents by entering into their suffering, valuing their unique differences, dialoguing in their language, respecting their culture and traditions, and learning from their wisdom (yes, adolescents have wisdom too!)? This is just one example of how the peaceable psychology advocated by Dueck and Reimer could bear fruit, even for those who are not trained in psychology or psychotherapy.

So even if you have never read a book on psychology before, A Peaceable Psychology would be a good place to begin.

Wayne Cordeiro is a senior pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Honolulu, Hawaii, one of the nation's fastest growing churches. Pioneered by him, it has grown to over 12,000 in weekend attendance since 1995, with many attendees being first-time Christians.
