The Cell's Design (Reasons to Believe): How Chemistry Reveals the Creator's Artistry, by Fazale Rana

Armed with cutting-edge techniques, biochemists have unwittingly uncovered startling molecular features inside the cell that compel only one possible conclusion--a supernatural agent must be responsible for life. Destined to be a landmark apologetic work, The Cell's Design explores the full scientific and theological impact of these discoveries. Instead of focusing on the inability of natural processes to generate life's chemical systems (as nearly all apologetics works do), Fazale Rana makes a positive case for life's supernatural basis by highlighting the many biochemical features that reflect the Creator's hallmark signature.
This breakthrough work extends the case for design beyond irreducible complexity. These never-before-discussed evidences for design will evoke awe and amazement at God's creative majesty in the remarkable elegance of the cell's chemistry.

"In Darwin's day, a living cell was thought to be quite simply--for all practical purposes--little more than a microscopic blob of gelatin. Rana lays out what contemporary science has learned about the cell's design, and he poignantly and provocatively shows that it is the handiwork of not only an Intelligent Designer but specifically the God revealed in Scripture."--Hank Hanegraaff, president, Christian Research Institute; host, Bible Answer Man broadcast

Golden nuggets in tons of ore for some amateurs in science.
By Wayne
The last course I took in science was in high school so this book's scientific information often made my head spin. But reading it made me appreciate creation and the work that microbiologists are doing to understand it. From the introduction, analogies, and conclusion I could understand the gist of the chapters. After reading about 85% of the more detailed information I was truly amazed at the complexity of the cell.
I don't believe that there is proof of God's existence only evidence which each individual must weigh in their own mind. I remember reading a philosopher who said it can be argued whether God is fact or fantasy but it can't be argued that it is the greatest fact or greatest fantasy. This book has added to my body of growing evidence.

Comprehensive examination of how cells work
By Richard L. Deem
Dr. Fuz Rana attempts to show that cellular biochemistry points to the existence of the Creator who designed it. Whereas most intelligent design books attempt to show the existence of design by demonstrating the existence of irreducible complexity, Dr. Rana examines the cell's biochemistry with broad strokes of how everything works together with such marvelous fidelity. So, even if a single piece or line of evidence might be dismissed as a statistical outlier, the weight of evidence makes a powerful case for design by a Creator. Each chapter begins with an analogy from the art world that relates to the topic at hand. Apparently, Dr. Rana is quite an art enthusiast.

One of my favorite sections was the discussion of how proteins are made within a cell. A large amount of the cell's molecular systems are involved in the process by which DNA is transcribed into RNA then translated into proteins. The process is like a beautifully choreographed symphony in which all the instruments come together to produce a sound that seems to be more than just the addition of the individual pieces. The protein manufacturing process is amazing in its own right. However, the quality control systems that operate at each step of the process ensure that the fidelity of the copies remain high without slowing down the process. Even so, just manufacturing proteins is not the end of the process. Many of these proteins undergo post-translational modifications, such as formation of disulfide bonds (one aspect of the protein folding process), folding of proteins into specific three-dimensional structures, addition of carbohydrate moieties, cleavage of the protein chain, and assembly into protein complexes. For most proteins, the linear structure of the protein does not define its three dimensional structure sufficiently so that it will fold properly on its own. Accessory molecules are required to ensure that the protein folds properly so that it will function as designed. How these systems co-evolved along with the proteins themselves is quite a mystery for evolutionists.

Until the last century, we humans were blissfully unaware of amazing processes operating within each cell of our bodies. Even now, recent research continues to reveal such things as epigenetic control of transcription that goes beyond the mere genetic sequences upon which it operates. With such refinements "identical" cells operate differentially within discrete microenvironments. This not a discussion of your father's biochemistry, but an up-to-date examination of the latest evidence pointing toward the design hypothesis operating within our cells. Get the book, and be awe-struck with the incredible systems operating within your body.

Wonderful
By J. Morales
An excellent case is made in this book. It's a bit technical, so reader beware about that. However, I don't think that's a reason to avoid the book. We can't run away from things just because we're not an "expert". If you're a reasonable person and willing to admit where your weak points are then there's still plenty to learn. If you don't understand something but want to learn more, then educate yourself. Overall, he makes his case for design being evident in the cell explicitly clear whether you're a biologist or not. I find it hard to find much wrong with the argument. We look at things like the pyramids and stonehenge and can tell they're designed. We don't think a freak storm blew a bunch of stone blocks into these configurations. The cell, the smallest building block of all life is a complex factory that replicates itself. Nothing we have yet compares to that. The evidence is right there if you're willing to see. A good book to read that will give you plenty to think over even if you disagree with him.

Judy Robertson shares her unique insider's viewpoint as a woman in the Mormon church. After she and her husband rediscovered God's truth, they faced torment and persecution upon leaving the LDS church. This reader-friendly book is one of the few Christian books that focuses first on an individual's journey from Mormonism rather than on theology or Christian doctrines. The revised edition includes testimonies of others who have left the Mormon church and what God is doing today through Concerned Christians. Readers will find Out of Mormonism a useful resource for understanding and witnessing to friends and family in the LDS church.

Mormonism Looks Good

The Weakness
How can such good people be wrong? I thought. There’s gotta be something there. Surely if God designed His church for today’s world, it would be like this one.

Jim’s account with Campbell Soup took him to the Arizona farmlands each year from May to the first of July. He needed to be there during potato harvest to oversee grading, loading, and shipping to ensure top quality spuds. Although this was my first time accompanying him with our kids, I heard my husband rave so much about Joe Jackson and his family, I’d gotten sick of it. “Judy, these are the finest people you’ll ever meet.”

At first, I made serious accusations. “Jim, these people just want your business,” I said cynically. “That’s why they’re being so nice. They’re snowing you.”

“Judy, how can you say that? They’re just sincere, hard-working people.”

“Well, I have a funny feeling about them. And what is their religion? Mormon? I’ve never heard of that before.”

“They are totally committed to it. I’ve never seen anything like it. Everything they do revolves around their church and family.”

After a summer of observing this “all-American” family in action, I began to see their appealing qualities, too. Boy, they really do have something! Certainly something we don’t. I want to know more.

My depleted spiritual life needed to be recharged, especially after a recent incident at our home church in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I guess you could say my spiritual candle was flickering.

At a vacation Bible school planning meeting, I sat with my co-director in her elegant living room. I opened my heart and unfolded what I thought were innovative and fresh ideas for the kids. In the middle of my presentation she interrupted me. “We’ve never done it this way before, and I don’t know who you think you are, trying to change our VBS!” she sputtered, eyes glaring at me. Her words stung and I sat speechless. Unable to go on, I swallowed hard, gathered my things, and left her home like a whipped puppy.

I choked back tears all the way home. Once in our bedroom I lamented, How could she be so cruel?

I knew after a good fifteen-minute sob I needed to get my feelings under control fast. The kids would be back soon from their friends’ house and Jim home for supper.

After eight years of marriage, Jim’s way was to try to “fix” my hurt feelings. He’d say something like “Why didn’t you just tell her off?”

But I couldn’t bring myself to tell off anyone. So I stuffed it in my hurt-feelings bag never to tell anyone—not even God. I didn’t know how to share my hurts with God, and I hadn’t studied the Bible enough to know we should “bear one another’s burdens.”

I’d been a church attendee all my life, listened to lots of sermons, but I didn’t know how my faith should work in times of crisis. That’s why I looked forward to this family trip and meeting these “fine” people Jim kept telling me about.

* * *
* * *

The Jackson family put us up in an apartment house they owned right off Main Street, near the center of the city of Mesa. After we had a welcome shower to get the accumulated dust off, they took us out to dinner.

Our kids enjoyed the apartment complex’s swimming pool. Across the street from our summer home was a lush green park, and we were only a block away from the gleaming white Mormon temple. Its acres of cool grass, tall palm trees, and sparkling fountains were an oasis in the desert.

They treated us like family, taking us out to eat and to church and to family cookouts. “I’ll have to admit, Jim, any people I’ve ever been around that I’ve thought were really Christians have these same attributes. They are good, loving, family-oriented people.” In no time, I forgot the unpleasant experience with the church member back in Fayetteville.

Jim and I agreed before we married that we would join a “neutral” church if we couldn’t agree on his Lutheran background or my Disciples of Christ upbringing. We believed that if our family prayed together we’d stay together.

After hopping from church to church to find our niche, we finally settled on the First Christian Church. I had attended it as a college student at the University of Arkansas.

We jumped right into the activities. Jim was on the church board and eventually became vice chairman. One summer, I co-directed the vacation Bible school. It was during this time I felt the sting of the sharp words of my co-director criticizing my ideas. Even though I attended church regularly, I didn’t adequately know how to call on God for my needs. Perhaps you could call me a social Christian.

I never searched the Scriptures I’d learned about, sung about, and heard every Sunday during my entire life. I was president of Christian Youth Fellowship, played piano for Sunday school, attended church camp every summer, and sang in the choir with my mother.

Jim received “proper training,” too. Raised in the Lutheran faith, he learned many Scriptures to be able to pass the exam for catechism. “I didn’t continue learning Scriptures and eventually forgot all I’d been taught,” Jim recalled.

Satan is subtle, catching us in our weakness. Nursing my wounds from the sharp tongue of a less-than-tactful church member, the kids and I traveled with Jim on this fateful trip into the desert of Arizona to buy potatoes. Little did we know this journey would change our lives forever.

Interesting journey into, through, and out of Mormonism
By Arthur Digbee
This is an interesting personal story of a woman's experience entering and then leaving the Church of Latter-Day Saints. It is not hate-filled or anti-Mormon, though I suppose some Saints will inevitably view it this way. I would say the tone is more one of sadness, as Robinson has become an evangelical Christian who believes that the LDS Church is seriously wrong. Some readers will find Robinson's current religious beliefs unnecessarily intrusive or "preachy," though they play an important role in her personal journey.

Other authors do a better job talking about Mormon history or theology, so I wouldn't read this book as an "expose" or as an analysis of LDS doctrine. Instead, read it as a valuable first-person account of an experience with the church and its members. Robinson is only one person, so her experience may or may not be typical.

First, Robinson provides a very interesting narrative of how she was attracted to Mormonism in the first place. It's interesting to see a first-hand account of how the LDS Church moves in on people who express interest in their faith, and who share the kind of family values that the church emphasizes.

Second, Robinson provides an interesting introduction to the LDS Church as experienced by a new member. One of her legitimate frustrations, and the start of her doubt, was the extensive use of secret rites. As a result, she felt that she was subject to social pressure to go along with beliefs that were first presented as part of a "public" (in the temple) rite. She also describes some Mormon rites that I found theologically shocking; some of these rites have since been changed, though it's not clear from this book whether the underlying doctrines have been changed.*

Third, she tells us how she and her husband left Mormonism, and the hostility that this produced in their former friends. It would be nice if the LDS church could reflect on its attitude toward those who feel they must leave the church, it would reduce the bitterness that many ex-Mormons feel. Again, Robinson's account is valuable and it does not seem that unusual.

In short, this is a good personal account of a journey into, through, and out of Mormonism. I think both insiders and outsiders will find it interesting and worthy of reflection.

--
*Addendum in January 2008: I was coy in the original review, but one of these secret rites includes a play in which Jesus and Satan are presented as brothers, an issue that Mike Huckabee raised in the presidential race. Perhaps some LDS members can tell us whether this is (or was) part of the baptismal ceremony, as Robertson reports.

This was one of the best, fast-moving, very enlightening books of the Morman evaluations I have ever read. I only wish the book could have gone on longer with what has transpired from the "defection" -- She needs to write a sequel.

Skip this one, there's better ones out there
By readinginsf
I'm very interested in other religions (I'm Christian) and have read a number of books out there on Mormonism and my opinion is that this one just isn't as good as all the others. The main character is interested in the sense of community Mormons have, but seems to doubt and dislike all of the Church principles and ceremony... yet she still goes forward with formally joining the church?! I can understand having difficulty leaving a religion once you're in, but I had a hard time, and was honestly somewhat offended, with her joining something she didn't even believe in from the beginning. After her story of leaving Mormonism the book got too Jesus preachy for me and although I finished it's a few hours of my life I'm not going to get back.

Identifies the State of Evangelicalism and Diagnoses the Problems
By Craig Stephans
Stackhouse points out the weaknesses and shortfalls of contemporary North American evanglicals with aplomb. He knows the pulse and problems of evangelicalism and states what I think are accurate descriptions. At times, his writing seems to become something of a rant of all the problems of evangelicalism.

The book consists of separate essays connected by the commone topic of evangelicalism in North America. Stackhouse diagnoses contemporary North American Evangelicals as being stuck in "adolescence." Evangelicals have become enmeshed with the culture. They have gotten carried away by an American gospel characterized by the pursuit of success, consumerism, individualism and luxury. This has facilitated evangelicals making their needs primary when it comes to church membership. Stackhouse calls this "church shopping." (28)

American evangelicals have accommodated their comfort in the culture by making alliances with parachurch organizations that are funded to allow evangelicals to vicariously carry out mandates of the gospel. The evangelical climate in North America is highlighted with charismatic, dynamic leaders that create something akin to a cult following. Stackhouse writes that these leaders operate without needing the approval of any structural hierarchy and can focus on the activities du jour. This can lead to positive activity and change but can be a weakness leading flocks into wrong teachings or leading to corruption. Congregations gather around pastors who are deemed to be solely responsible for the spirituality of the people.

According to Stackhouse Evangelicals have fallen victim to compartmentalized lives in which Christianity/religion is one of many pursuits or priorities. Stackhouse also points to a general Biblical ignorance among evangelicals who are content to be aware of the highlights of the Bible and who assume that by being "good" patriotic, church-going Americans they are following Biblical principles. The consumer-driven, media-culture inspired lifestyle is plain contradictory to the Christian life handed down from the apostles and early church. The communities that evangelicals affiliate closely with too often affirm evangelicals' current lifestyles.

Stackhouse also addresses issues related to conversion, especially the Billy Graham type of crusades. He also devotes a chapter to the several evangelical views on women in ministry.

Unfortunately, Stackhouse doesn't offer anything in the area of prescription to remedy the diagnoses he has shared in this book. This book will show several problems areas in evangelicalism that will not be major revelations to readers.

Good analysis of problems in evangelicalism, but not many answers given to the problems raised
By Jesse Rouse
In this book John Stackhouse deals with many issues in contemporary Evangelical churches, such as a lack of spiritual maturity, how parachurches compete with local churches, the senior pastor problem, biblical illiteracy, etc.

This book is made up of eleven essays, many of which Dr. Stackhouse had written for other publications (mostly Christian journals), so the chapters in this book do not always seem to flow into each other. For example, in chapters seven through nine he goes from talking about Billy Graham and the nature of conversion to models of women in ministry to the lack of Christian scholarship in evangelicalism. As far as I can tell there are three underlying things which connect all of his chapters together.

The first is, obviously, evangelicalism. He rarely strays outside of evangelical church to discuss what other denominations do differently. While it is nice that he focuses so well on his topic, I think that perhaps comparing evangelicalism to other denomination in some of the areas he talked about would have been helpful.

The second underlying theme is that evangelicalism has problems. All of his chapters deal with problems in Evangelicalism, instead of what it is doing right. This can also be a very good thing. I think the problems are what we need to be dealing with, but if one only read this book, you would probably come to the conclusion that evangelicalism is one of the worst Christian groups in existence. Perhaps Dr. Stackhouse should have at least included some of the things that evangelicalism is getting right, just to balance the picture a little bit. I am not saying that he needs to focus on the good things in evangelicalism, because that is what most evangelicals tend to do and that does not help us solve our problems at all. I am saying that in order to present an accurate picture of the state of evangelicalism, as he claims to be trying to do with a title like Evangelical Landscapes, he need to stop focusing solely on what is wrong with evangelicalism. It may be that there are a lot of things wrong with evangelicalism. I doubt many informed people would argue that. But I also think people reading about evangelicalism should hear both the good and the bad, not just the bad.

The third issue he continually brings up in each essay is the changing nature of evangelicalism. He constantly tells us that the issues in contemporary evangelicalism are not the issues of the last generation's evangelicalism. On this point, I have no criticism of Dr. Stackhouse. I think that this is an extremely important point that he is making. He makes us realize that if we are still using the same methods of teaching in the church that were used in the last generation, it is likely that they will not be effective. Take his section on biblical literacy for example. If one taught a lesson in an evangelical church, say, twenty-five years ago, one could allude to scripture verses all the time and the audience would be able to keep up with you. They would be able, not only to know what you were referring to, but probably why you were referring to it. If one tried to do that same thing in an evangelical church today, it is doubtful that even the pastor would know what you were referring to, and certainly the number who understood what you were saying would be very few, if there would be any at all.

But what do we do about this? How should we respond to the utter lack of biblical literacy (or perhaps just literacy in general)? This brings up to mind the biggest complaint I have against Dr. Stackhouse's book: he provides few answers. He raises many critical questions, and I am glad he does, but he never really gets around to suggesting what we should do about these problems. He does provide small paragraphs at the end of some sections saying something like "if only evangelicals would follow the bible..." (see the last paragraph of chapter three for a good example of this) or something of that nature, but he never gives us any ideas about how to do that. His so called answers are simply naïve suggestions telling us to stop doing what we are doing wrong. I seriously doubt that this will be of much help at all. Getting up on a Sunday morning and telling a congregation that they are biblically illiterate will probably not solve the problem. All it will probably do is offend people and get you into trouble without having really helped the people in your congregation at all. Do not get me wrong, this is an excellent book, but it would have been even better if he had at least some practical suggestions about what we should do to remedy these problems.

In conclusion, I would say that this is a very helpful book for anyone who wishes to become a scholar in the evangelical tradition. The issues which Dr. Stackhouse raises are ones which anyone who is a position of leadership/teaching in evangelicalism will have to deal with. These are not problems which will just go away, they are problems which must be dealt with. Any evangelical scholar who does not deal with these issues does not seem to me to be really connected with the movement he is a part of. If you simply live in an ivory tower doing your research, but never helping the church deal with the issues which threaten to tear her apart, then it seems to me that you have become entirely isolated from those who you claim are your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Did I mention the dragons?
By Amazon Reader
If you haven't read any of Donna's other books, you will be confused with this one. Please, go back to the beginning and start with the first Warrior story, you won't be disappointed. Now, if you have read her other books, then you will love Charon's story. I fall in love with each Warrior in each book. Charon is no different. But the best part about this story is that Donna melds the world of the Warriors and their Druids with the world of her dragon series. That just makes me giddy. Have I mentioned I love dragons? They have a large part to play in the world of the warriors now but that doesn't detract from Charon's story.

Each of these books just has me chomping at the bit for the next one. And did I mention there are dragons?

Midnight's Captive Part 4
By The Jeep Diva
Midnight's Captive picked up momentum in Part 3 and never slowed down. Part 4 keeps escalating towards the big fight between Jason and the Warriors who have obtained some very powerful allies. The explosive end conflict is beyond intense.

Charon and Laura are at the point that they know they have something phenomenal between them though they are still struggling with the how to make it work. Charon's guilt from his past eats at him and makes him weary of allowing anyone to ever get close enough to be in that position again. The life of a Warrior is often violent and dangerous. He has to know inexplicably that once he lets Laura fully in that no harm will ever come to her. It's a heavy weight for him to carry along with all that guilt. This makes for an incredibly heartwarming love story.

Readers learn at the very end who Phelan's going to be paired with in his book Midnight's Temptation. I am so excited about this. We'll have to wait impatiently until October though. I am so excited about what is sure to come. I just love the fact that Donna has paired him with her. The heroine and who she is guarantees an amazing read with plenty of conflict.

This is the best part by far. I was waiting for Jason to pop up & say I'm back, thought I was dead. Loved the ending where aisley & Pheland get together. She realizes he is a warrior & starts running away. Of course, he is going to chase her. Hopefully they are going to have a story of their own.

The Meaning of Sex: Christian Ethics and the Moral Life, by Dennis P. Hollinger

Our culture is not only sex-crazed but also deeply confused about sex and sexual ethics. Unfortunately, Christians seem equally confused, and the church has tended to respond with simplistic answers. The reason for this confusion is that the meaning of sex has been largely lost.

Dennis Hollinger argues that there is indeed a God-given meaning to sex. This meaning, found in the Christian worldview, provides a framework for a biblical sexual ethic that adequately addresses the many contemporary moral issues. The Meaning of Sex provides a good balance between accessible theology and engaging discussion of the practical issues Christians are facing, including premarital sex, sex within marriage, homosexuality, reproductive technologies, and faithful living in a sex-obsessed world.

From the Back Cover
Good Sex Is Found in the Meaning of Sex

In a culture deeply confused about sex and sexual ethics that often sends conflicting messages--at times promoting an "anything goes" attitude while at other times seeking to impose limits on sexual behavior--and a church that frequently responds with simplistic answers, the real meaning of sex has been largely lost. In this book, Dennis Hollinger counters the confusion, arguing for an inherent, God-given meaning to sex. This meaning provides a framework for a wholistic biblical sexual ethic that adequately addresses contemporary moral issues such as premarital sex, sex within marriage, homosexuality, reproductive technologies, and faithful living in a sex-saturated world.

"Dennis Hollinger addresses the complex issues of sexuality with a rare combination of theological-philosophical expertise, cultural savvy, and pastoral sensitivity. In doing so, he goes beyond general references to 'love and justice' to take seriously the specifics of what the Bible says about this most intimate area of our lives. The Meaning of Sex is a much-needed 'for such a time as this' book."--Richard J. Mouw, Fuller Theological Seminary

"Debates and dialogues about sexual ethics spin in circles unless we clarify 'the meaning of sex.' Indeed, what sets apart a truly Christian sexual ethic is that it is founded on the distinctive meanings of sex and sexuality established by God and revealed in the Scriptures. Hollinger's book articulates these foundations persuasively and then mines them to clarify the most pressing ethical and moral challenges facing the church today."--Stanton L. Jones, Wheaton College; author, Ex-Gays? and God's Design for Sex

"One of the greatest needs today of young and old alike is to rediscover the liberating freedom that accompanies understanding and experiencing sex in all its God-ordained glory. Dennis Hollinger has given us what I believe to be the best contemporary treatment on this timely subject. This is not just a book for ethicists. I'll be recommending it as a must read for all pastors, parents, youth workers, and young adults."--Walt Mueller, The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding

The best book on the subject I know of
By Nicholas Nowalk
I was not familiar with Hollinger before picking this book up, but I was not disappointed. "The Meaning of Sex" is far and away the best book I have come across presenting and defending the Christian vision of human sexuality and what makes for (alternatively) flourishing or degradation. While a few chapters can be a bit dry (the author is an ethics professor!), be sure to especially read chapters 3 ("The Christian Worldview and Sex") and 4 ("The Purposes of Sex"). Besides consistently advocating the right positions on the issues (i.e. he is biblical and almost always within the mainstream tradition of historical Christian orthodoxy), what is most valuable about Hollinger's study is the narrative, big-picture approach he takes to each and every particular ethical issue. This book looks for the "why", not just the "what", of God's commands and the biblical structuring of sexual ethics. Simply put, Hollinger demonstrates how the Christian vision makes sense of the world we find ourselves in, in the widest, most coherent way possible--and is thus deeply satisfying. Read Hollinger!

Sex Crazed Culture?
By dave
In The Meaning of Sex, Dennis Hollinger attempts to articulate the meaning and purpose of sex based on biblical standards. He says, "Sex is a good gift of God with very specific purposes, and those purposes best find their fulfillment in a very specific context-the marriage of a man and a woman." He argues that we live in a sex-crazed and sexually disoriented culture. Today, there is little consensus on sexual values. A Christian worldview of sex is almost counter culture. In referring to previous generations, the author says, "People engaged in sex outside of the bonds of marriage, but they did so knowing they had broken not just a societal norm, but an ethical norm."

Hollinger tackles some tough issues from a Christian perspective. He is aware not everyone will agree, but he offers a consistent view of the meaning of sex based on his understanding from a biblical worldview.

I purchased this book in advance of the conference where the author spoke. The author had a limited time to cover some of the points of the book. In reading it I found many details of different sex ethics prevalent in the US and in the world. It was very informative and I would recommend it to those that are interested in the current attitudes and policies surrounding the ethics of sex in our current society in the US.

Pilgrim, by Doug Bowman

Doug Bowman, a staple of the western for decades, takes the genre to new heights in this story of a young man seeking fame and fortune in the wide open plains of Texas.

Eli Pilgrim gave up his simple life as a pig farmer in Ohio to chase his dream on the ranges of Texas. Eli believed what he had heard about the legendary state, a land so vast, with so much opportunity, that a man has no choice but to get rich.

So, when the first frost ended, Eli sold off everything he owned, traded in his pigs for a horse, packed up his things, and went, never realizing that a man has to roll with the punches to get ahead, and that the world, especially the rough untamed fields of Texas, aren't exactly waiting for him.

From Publishers Weekly
Doug Bowman's (West to Comanche County; Houston; etc.) latest western, Pilgrim, begins several years after the Civil War, when strapping young Eli Pilgrim decides to leave behind his family's pig farm in Ohio to seek his fortune in Texas. Upon his arrival, he lands a job at the Oxbow Ranch and kills a man in self-defense, which makes him some new enemies. When the troublemakers ambush him and his boss, Big Step, he swears vengeance. Good and bad guys are clearly drawn, but there's just enough ambiguity to make things interesting. Western fans will be entertained.

From Booklist
Hoping to become a cattle rancher, Eli Pilgrim finds himself in Texas, where he befriends Oliver Benson, owner of the biggest ranch in the territory, who figures he can use a strong young man. Then violence gets in the way. A local hard case named Johnny Hook tires to rob Eli and winds up dead; Eli is acquitted of murder, but that doesn't satisfy Hook's brothers, who come after Eli but kill Benson instead, sending Eli on his own crusade. Bowman, a Grande Ole Opry performer and veteran western novelist, has taken a moth-eaten premise (revenge in the Old West) and infused it with new energy. The thoroughly likable Pilgrim's violently detoured quest for a better life draws successfully on all the classic western archetypes. Wes Lukowsky

Review
"Imagine a combination of James Arness, Randolph Scott, John Wayne, Alan Ladd, and Jimmy Dean's 'Big Bad John,' and you have Camp Houston, the roughest toughest fighter in the West."-Publishers Weekly on Houston

"Bowman, a respected veteran of the western genre, adds new depth to the timeworn tale of the loner out for revenge by paying attention not just to the violence, but also to life . . . before the murder. The context makes the white-hot pain more real, and his obsession with revenge more credible."-Booklist

"The best Texas novel since Lonesome Dove."-Ralph Compton

This is a book about food (spoiler warning)
By Jeffrey Foreman
I kinda had high hopes for this book, I'm a big fan of westerns and this looked promising. I'll start with the positives. I really liked the characters, the dialog, and the attention to detail. The main character is a very likeable guy that's easy to get behind. The problem I had with it is there's absolutely no tension, the protagonist never faces any challenge at all. Our hero Eli Pilgrim is such a quick draw that his opponents never have any chance against him, and he dispatches them all with zero difficulty. There are even parts in the book where characters talk about how Eli Pilgrim should have no problem killing his foe, and they're always right. Doug Bowman seemed more concerned with Eli Pilgrim's meals, because there isn't a chapter of this book that doesn't go into great detail about the food he eats throughout his day. Over and over again we're with Pilgrim as he buys food, cooks food (or goes to a restaurant), eats the food, and talks about food with other characters. This book pays more attention to food than anything else, and in the beginning I didn't mind it so much, but once the character sets out on his quest for revenge it REALLY kills the pacing for the book to keep detailing the meals he has during the course of his day, or how he sets up his campsites. There are almost whole chapters of this book that you could probably cut without affecting the main story because it's just detailing his time on the road setting up his camp, eating food, exchanging pleasantries with strangers, and sleeping. A little of that is good to establish atmosphere and such, but this book does it so excessively. I don't recommend this book if you're looking for action or a good revenge story. I do recommend it if you just like reading about meals and daily life in the old west.

Functional ,revenge Western
By F. J. Harvey
We first meet Eli Pilgrim as a young man working on the family hog farm in post Civil War Ohio. While his mother and two brothers seek to turn the farm into a bacon and sausage processing concern ,his dreams lie elsewhere -to be precise Texas.
He sets out to make his fortune in Texas and his journey is by no means uneventful, encompassing as it does,an encounter with ambushers and a genial con-man.It is not till he gets to Texas that his troubles really start however. He kills a would be murderer and robber only to stand trial for murder at the instigation of a corrupt lawman and the victim's friends and relatives. He is exonerated thanks in part to his new employer the redoubtable rancher Big Step Benson. The thwarted accusers ambush Pilgrim and Big Step, killing the latter.
Pilgrim then sets out to track and kill the culprits ,and this forms the core of the book.
The big drawback to it is length.Ther basic story is functional and has served as the basis for many a terse, say 150 page ,paperback original.Sadly this is almost twice as long and neither the writing nor the pacing justifies the additional length
It is nigh on half way before Pilgrim arrives in Texas and there are supefluous pages towards the end of the book which add little to its impact.Scenes of gun play and training in quick draw techniques etc are well and propulsively written but its just too long.
Genre lovers will enjoy and take comfort from its familiarity but it will gain the Western no new converts

Doug Bowman Where is your history?
By Richard Bilbrey
I've read westerns for 50 years and sometimes it gets tiresome reading cover to cover violence. It was enjoyable to read one of everyday life, much like life really was. The action was believable and could really have happened. I don't understand why I cannot Google the author and find any information on his personal life. Where and when was he born? Grand Ole Opry performer from a family of country singers? What and who is the family? What did they record? I can find no information! I always look up and read the personal information posted about authors I truly like. This one comes up blank! I would like to know if he was as good a singer as he was an author.

Some Great Points, However...
By Lorenzo Elijah Heighway
I am about halfway through this book and the authors do make some excellent points. However I did want to comment on a couple of things I disagree with, where I feel that they stretch or misuse Scripture somewhat.

1. One of the four laws of inner-healing the Sandfords rely upon is stated by them on page 59 as follows:

"The fourth law is becoming what we judge in others: 'Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things' (Romans 2:1). I have found it to be a law that whoever judges another dooms himself to do the same thing, or something stemming from the same root"

I believe this is a real misinterpretation of this verse. The verse is actually saying that when we judge others for doing the things that we ourselves ARE DOING (my emphasis - on the PRESENT TENSE) we are condemning ourselves. In other words, God will simply use the same standard for us as we use for others, because we are doing the very same things that we judge.

There is no PREDICTIVE sense in this verse. It is NOT saying that when we judge others for doing certain things, in the future we WILL do the same or similar.

2. Commanding Demons to Name Themselves
From p42ff, the Sandfords state that we should not command demons to name themselves in the process of deliverance. There then follows a very convoluted explanation of the story of the Gadarene Demoniac in Matthew 8:28-34 and Mark 5:1-17. Myself and every other deliverance minister I have come across, including seasoned ministers such as Charles Kraft, Francis MacNutt, Derek Prince and Don Dickerman maintain that in these passages Jesus was clearly interrogating the demons, and that this is a helpful example that can be followed. It is not essential to know the names of evil spirits in order to cast them out, but it can often reveal things about for example the function they are performing in the host person.

The Sandfords try to make out that Jesus was asking the man his name, in order to ascertain what level of deliverance had already been attained - like a "reality check". They try to make out that Jesus already knew the name of all the demons and therefore did not need to ask. if we follow that logic, Jesus would also have known what level of deliverance had already been attained!

Also, Jesus was operating as an anointed man while He walked upon the earth. His identity was always God, but He laid aside attributes such as omniscience and relied upon His intimate communion with the Father, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, as our example. Therefore He did not automatically know the name of all the demons occupying the man.

Having raised these reservations, it has not put me off continuing to read the rest of the book and find some great wisdom within it.

Preaching to a Postmodern World: A Guide to Reaching Twenty-first Century Listeners, by Graham M. Johnston

While growing churches dot our urban centers and country landscapes, church-goers and students today are actually less likely to maintain a Christian worldview than in the past. In fact, the majority of society does not even believe in objective truth. A minister out of touch with this culture is like an uninformed missionary trying to teach in a foreign country. To communicate God's Word effectively in the twenty-first century, teachers need to know how to connect with and confront an audience of postmodern listeners.

In Preaching to a Postmodern World, Johnston shows pastors, seminary students, professors, lay teachers, and church leaders can reach the present age without selling out to it. The book discusses how to:
• distinguish between modernism and postmodernism
• understand postmodern worldviews
• change the style of preaching without compromising the substance
• take advantage of new opportunities provided by the cultural shift
• show an inattentive society the relevance of God's truth

The author's keen insights into contemporary pop and media culture also help equip speakers to address today's listeners with clarity and relevance.

Review
'We are living amid one of the greatest cultural shifts in history... This book is designed to help Christian leaders better understand their listeners, so they can communicate biblical truths with effectiveness and clarity.' Josh McDowell

From the Back Cover
To communicate God's Word effectively in the twenty-first century, you need to know how to connect with and confront an audience of postmodern listeners. With this book, you'll learn how to change your style of preaching without compromising the substance, take advantage of new opportunities provided by the cultural shift, and show an inattentive society the relevance of God's truth.

"The world has gone through a major shift in thinking and communication into a postmodern mode, yet much preaching is still 'pre-modern' and very out of touch. Graham Johnston has made a significant contribution in his book, showing how preaching can be thoroughly biblical, opening up the text of the Bible but also concerned with the openings in the minds of contemporary people."
Leighton Ford, president, Leighton Ford Ministries

"Communicating God's Word is more than just speaking the truth; it's being heard and understood as well. This book is designed to help Christian leaders better understand their listeners, so they can communicate biblical truths with effectiveness and clarity."
Josh McDowell, author of Evidence That Demands a Verdict

"Graham Johnston describes the water in which we exist. . . . Better still, he provides some workable leads on how to communicate the life-giving Word to men and women swimming in the currents of the twenty-first century."
Haddon W. Robinson, author of Biblical Preaching

"Johnston not only brings a shrewd analysis of the present changes in our culture, he also contributes from the perspective of a skilled practitioner. Such a combination is both rare and valuable."
Martin Robinson, director of mission and theology, British and Foreign Bible Society

"For anyone desiring a ministry of impact in today's postmodern society, Graham Johnston has provided an understandable and useful focus."
Howard G. Hendricks, chairman, Center for Christian Leadership, Dallas Theological Seminary

About the Author
Graham MacPherson Johnston is senior pastor of Subiaco Church of Christ in Western Australia and an adjunct lecturer in homiletics at Perth Bible College. He holds degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Dallas Theological Seminary.

On the mark
By R. Ciervo
Johnston's review of postmodernism is accurate and concise. Announcing that modernism has collapsed is one flaw. We live in a mixture of the two - dare I say - philosophies. The other complaint I have about the book is the reliance on secondary sources. Besides these two problems, this is an excellent book.
Postmodernism has come of age in the new century. It's been growing steadily since the sixties. Anyone who was around for the hippie movement can recognize all the signs. However, postmodernism has become mainstream and even adopted by some in the church. (Whatever happened to being renewed in the spirit of the mind?) Johnston not only shows how the world has infiltrated the church but how to reach those with the gospel without accommodating to this age. His understanding that popular postmodernism is a parasite feeding off of modernism is incisive. In essence, postmodernism is a reaction to modernism as feminism reacts against a male dominated society. Christians ought not imbibe either as a philosphy. We do better with pre-modern philosophy and its attention to reality.
This book is more than helpful. It ought to be read by all those who minister today.

Graham Johnston has put together a wonderful book...
By David Phillips
Graham Johnston has put together a wonderful book on preaching to postmoderns. Dr. Johnston first gives a brief overview of postmodern culture. While it's not exhaustive life Carson's The Gagging of God or Dockery's The Challenge of Postmodernism or Grenz's Postmodern Primer, that does not mean it doesn't do the job. He boils a lot of it down and gives the neccesary basics to understanding our current culture.
He then describes some ways to engage the listeners, ways that preachers should truly understand. He encourages the preacher to move from descriptive preaching (expository preaching using multiple points) to narrative preaching (expository preaching that uses the plot of the Biblical text).
The author discusses barriers to communication with postmoderns and then how to make a connection and make inroads to the listeners and finally different sermon style and delivery options.

Not bad if you're convinced already
By David L. Russell
This book is certainly not bad - it does provide some insight and practical advice for preaching to a postmodern world, and, in this way, may be helpful. My main criticism is that all of the (foot)notes quote other Evangelicals about their analyses and perspectives of postmodernism without letting postmodernists speak for themselves on the matter. Accordingly, this book may be a good introduction for someone who knows nothing about postmodernism and for someone who has an Evangelical background, but it is rather superficial and stereotypical in its presentation. If your primary exposure to postmodernism is from reading this book, you will not learn how to think as postmodernists think, you will learn only how some Evangelicals believe postmodernists think. For a non-religious, concise, and insightful approach, I highly recommend Christopher Butler's "Postmodernism: A Very Short Introduction," published by Oxford University Press.
