Religion Hollywood Style

Now I have always been interested in different religions even though I am a Christian. I wonder what other people believe and why? And of course some of them can be pretty far fetched in my opinion. Now why would I want to read this particular book. Well I have read before about Scientology and Kabbalah and was surprised that people actually bought into these beliefs. This is two of the religions discussed in the book by Richard Abanes.

Other religions are Wicca, Mormons, Buddhist and New Age Beliefs. Again I have read about many of these but still wanted to explore further. "Religions of the Stars" is broken down by each belief system and a major star that is a proponent of that religion. For example I always assumed that Oprah Winfrey was a Christian. Here I learn quite different. She practices New Age beliefs and they are quite different from my own. I was surprised to find that some people think that they control their own salvation. Now I agree we have choices in our personal beliefs but I don't think I have the ability to "save" myself.

I have had family and friends before that are from different ideologies. Learning more about Mormons, Wicca and Buddhism from them. Here in "Religion of the Stars" I was able to explore even more. The book was written in plain language that I could understand. Differences were pointed out in how each religion and Christianity differed. And how many mirrored the same beliefs and teachings too.

Most surprising was the religions of Scientology and Kabbalah. Amazing that people can really be reasoning and still "purchase" these religions. Yes, purchase is the right words. In order to advance in these religions you have to pay for each step up. Yeah! Odd in my opinion. Also there are sci-fi stories to explain our origins in Scientology. Yeah, we came from outer space. Well some people believe this. In Kabbalah a simple red string bracelet can keep evil from you. Hey, I have several different colors of string...does it have to be red?

If these things surprise you then take the time to read "Religion of the Stars" and judge for yourself. I know it was very enlightening for me.

Interesting to a point

The premise is pretty straight forward. Abanes takes several well known Hollywood religions (New Age, Mormonism, Scientology, the Occult - Wicca, Kabbalah, and Buddhism), and breaks them down. Each one is given a significant chapter, which tells you who in Hollywood believes in the religion, what exactly the religion is and involves, and extensive history on it. Abanes also takes a few paragraphs at the end of each section to compare each belief to Christianity.
Here are my gripes. Admittedly, as a regular viewer of E!, I was mostly interested in the Hollywood aspect of this book. However, the idea of Hollywood behind the research serves as merely a starting point. There isn't much emphasis at all on why it matters what Hollywood believes. The presence of "Hollywood" in the book has more of a feel of naming-dropping than a reason to care. The history of the subjects are at times very interesting, for example the brief bio of L. Ron Hubbard, the creator of Scientology, is too good to miss. However, sections of the text can become dry and repetitive. Moreover, the portions of the text that give advice on how to convert believers of the religions falls from the book's purpose, and in my opinion discredits what the author says he means to do. On the other hand, in comparing religions to Christianity, the author does so in a way that seems more informative to the people that would be most interested in the subject, and yet isn't offensive to the belief in question (most of the time.) He also does a great job of defining where Hollywood has glamorized to the point of distortion certain religions (Kabbalah being a huge example).
Overall, if you are a completely interested in the subject of religion social science, then you would give this book more stars than I did. If you are looking for some insight to Hollywood social science, then I think there are much better choices available.

There are so many "religions" out there to choose from, I use that term loosely. Before I became a Christian I was very curious about all these religions as I was looking for a place to land. This book really solidifies my Christian faith and can help those who are lost understand where these other religions fail us.

Hollywood seems to be a breeding ground for all these, for lack of a better term, whacky religions. Religions of the Stars by Richard Abanes covers religions such as Mormonism, Scientology (that is a very interesting chapter), Kabbalah, Buddhism, the church of Oprah (another very interesting chapter), and the Occult. I did not get the impression that the author's purpose of this book was to bash these other religions. It was his purpose to inform and educate Christians so when we are confronted by religions other than our own, we can be prepared to be a witness for Christ. He uses many facts and quotes from followers of these religions to support what he is saying.

Religions of the Stars simplifies these, at times, complicated religions and explains their beliefs in detail. I really appreciate this book and enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend it not just to Christians, but also for anyone who is curious. This book is straightforward, honest and very well written.

After my lengthy quest for the truth led me to finding Christ, I have a new appreciation for my faith and I am grateful I did not choose to follow these other religions that tend to confuse and mislead.

About the Author
Eugene H. Merrill (Ph.D., Bob Jones University; Ph.D., Columbia University) is distinguished professor of Old Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, where he has taught since 1975. He is also distinguished professor of Old Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Merrill is the author of a number of books, including A Historical Survey of the Old Testament, Everlasting Dominion: A Theology of the Old Testament, and a commentary on Deuteronomy.

Atop the Stronghold (Proverbs 21:22)

Merrill's work is certainly well-done. Although the work is obviously scholarly, the reader is not lost in a morass of technical jargon. Footnotes are generoulsy sprinkled at the bottom of every page and Merrill is always careful to include a reference to the work of other scholars, even those who do not agree with him, for the sake of those readers who might wish to do a little more research and receive both sides of the argument. At the same time, he gives cogent arguments for his own conservative stance on controversial issues and I must say that, barring one or two, I found his arguments very persuasive and, overall, whether I always agreed with him or not, he certainly provides a strong defense of his own position. Throughout the work I was consistently reminded of the experience, learning and concentrated insight that any reader can gain from a true scholar. Merrill did a fine job.
At times, because he is fair in his representation of differing opinions among certain historio-literary schools of thought (even going so far as to make explicit the fact that some of his views are in the minority among scholars), he might fool some of his readers into thinking that he holds certain views which he, in fact, does not. This is why I must disagree with the first reviewer who mentions Merrill's supposed belief that three or four tribes of Israel left Egypt at once and met the others later... In truth, Merrill was relating the views of another and not his own.
The crucial fact to consider in this work is that Merrill explicitly states that his position stems from the assumption that the Bible is the revealed Word of GOD (itself a minority view among "Biblical scholars"). Because of this, Merrill looks to the accounts rendered in the Old Testament first and compares what is found there with the claims of his peers. I found this approach extremely refreshing and of the utmost integrity.
All in all, it is quite obvious that Merrill is right in the thick of things and brings an up-to-date approach to the study of the Old Testament and he provides references for on every page. If you desire to know more about the economical, political, religious and geographical influences which helped shape the thoughts and actions of GOD's first covenant people from a well-written, conservative Christian perspective, "Kingdom of Priests" is an invaluable guide.

An Excellent Reference on Ancient History for Evangelicals!

I've read this book twice now, and I keep it on hand as a reference particularly when I am doing studies on the prophetic books of the Old Testament. It is a good concise reference for the historical background in which the Old Testament was written, but there are a few things that some of the other reviews did not seem to realize:

This book is not an exhaustive study of Israelite history. It appears to be written for a well-read lay audience. The footnotes are particularly helpful for nonprofessional Bible 'scholars,' as they point the reader to more in-depth sources of information that they might otherwise be unaware of. It is also written for Evangelicals (this is explicitly stated in the introduction). Those looking for a 'critical' history will be disappointed at his tenaciousness in reconciling ancient history with the Biblical narrative, but he is perfectly honest about what he is trying to do.

On a related thought, the two reviewers who claimed that Merrill was ignorant or intentionally ignored the Biblical account in place were sorely wrong. They either have not read the entire book, or grossly misunderstood what he was saying. For instance, it is true that he talks about the theory that several of the tribes of Israel were already in Canaan prior to the Exodus, but he then rejects that idea, and provides reasons why it does not make sense historically.

Merrill also presents a compelling system of chronology for the Exodus and for the period of the Kings. Personally, I disagree with his chronology, but he is consistent and does an excellent job of presenting his own views, and it is still a good system for obtaining an overall grasp of the approximate times that various events in the Bible took place.

With that said, the reason that I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt that Merrill would at times arbitrarily dismiss opposing views in favor of his own. I do believe from looking at his other works that he has a deep understanding of these other views and could refute them at length, and so my only disappointment is that he did not choose to devote more time to explaining why some of the opposing views are invalid, rather than quickly glossing over them and moving on to his own theories.

The second time that I read this book, I was also reading Wolfram Von Soden's "The Ancient Orient" and the two books complemented each other very nicely. Merrill is concerned primarily with chronology and political history. Von Soden's work is more of a social and cultural history (although it is on Mesopotamia and not Israel). They went very well together because one explained 'what happened' and the other explained 'what ordinary life was like' in the ancient Near East. I would thoroughly recommend reading these two books together as an introduction to the study of Old Testament history.

One wonders if the previous "reviewer" simply did not like Merrill's conclusions, which are more in line with conservative Biblical scholarship than the (questionable in my view) documentary hypothesis school of Biblical studies... Merrill has a useful ability to take a great deal of information - hundreds of years of history - and make it manageable wihtout losing the humanity of it. Granted this is done at the expense of increased detail (my reason for 4 stars, instead of 5), but the work is made more accessible by doing so. His language is understandable, which is all the more laudable as he is overtly a scholar. One might prefer different emphases than Merrill, but he can't be faulted for not consulting "me" before he wrote the book! I can recommend this without qualms or hesitation.

Don't Let the Bible Become an Idol

Debbie Blue's latest book is both intellectual and personal, down to earth and yet also extremely deep. Debbie is a pastor at House of Mercy and "emerging" church in the Twin Cities. This book is not so much a linear argument, but rather a series of examples of how to read the Bible as a living document that confounds our idolatrous systems of doctrines and easy answers. In fact, I get the impression that the chapters in this book could have been written as sermons for her church, in that each one of them not only stands alone, but the each also take a particular text of scripture and reflect on how it confounds our expectations about God and tears down the idols of our day to day lives.

If there is any overarching theme of the book it is idolatry, which as Debbie defines it, is pretty much anything that we use to tame life, control the uncertainty of existence, and bring stability to the chaos. Blue shows us how even our many religious conceptions about the Bible and the God of the Bible are themselves idols if we use them to try to contain and control and tame God. She seems to be advocating that faith that is more about simply living in the wildness and mystery and confusion of life, than about trying to use faith to bring stability and certainty to life. This is a message that is at the same time both liberating and frightening. Liberating in that I don't have to try to explain away all the messiness anymore, or make excuses for God. But frightening too, in that I like my idols: my revolutionary ideals, my hope in what I think is God's plan for the future (both personally and globally), my picture of who Jesus is and what he was about. And Debbie herself shares many of these ideals. And yet at the same time she is relentless about mocking and smashing even her own idols.

In their place she recommends only love, but not in a sappy, generic, overused way. Rather she presents love as itself an almost undefinable mystery that confounds our attempts to idolize it. Love as unconditional acceptance even to the point of undermining our sense of justice (think Jesus with the tax collectors). In so doing she opens up the Bible in new ways, asks new questions, forces us to sympathize with characters (the Pharisees for instance) that we were comfortable relegating to the idolatrous category of "villain".

This is a way of reading scripture that I am slowly learning - to read it not as a source of mere ideas or ideals, but as a living conversation, whose point is to tear down my conceptual idols, not build them up. People will often hold up the contradictions and difficult parts of the Bible as evidence of its worthlessness as scripture - if God's will isn't clearly spelled out in black and white, what good is it? But according to Blue, those difficulties and contradictions may be the whole point. What if God's main concern is not to give us a book that will answer all our questions and bring us stability in a chaotic world, but rather, is to give us a book that will shake us up, that will leave us with more questions than when we started, so that we will be forced to wrestle through them and search together in community for how to live with love in this crazy, messy, chaotic world? What if the point of the Bible is not information, but transformation? What if it's supposed to be not propositional, but provocative? What if it is in itself a challenge to idolatrous faith, including idolatrous Bible-based faith? Blue's book does a good job of demonstrating how the Bible is exactly that.

"Let My Bible Go": Debbie Blue's Liberating Theology

Debbie Blue's latest book, From Stone to Living Word, is a rarity. It's an original work of theology from the pen (or keyboard) of a working preacher. Too often, we assume seminary professors write original theology, while working pastors write "inspirational" books with "take-aways" for how to live a Christian life. Blue is part of an older tradition, dating back at least to the apostle Paul, and carried forward by Augustine, Luther and Calvin, among others. Her vocation as a founding pastor House of Mercy, one of the world's most vibrant emergent churches (located in St. Paul MN), has shaped her deeply humane and original approach to reading the Bible.

Blue realizes that all-too-often, we Christians read the Bible as if on a mission to jam its uncanny, poetic and evocative language into the confines of a moralistic worldview. Whether fundamentalist, mainstream or liberal, we want the Bible to resolve our doubts and tell us what to do. But what if the Bible doesn't work like that? What if it confounds our certainties and challenges our convictions? Blue invites us to converse with, rather than worship, the Bible. She suspects this conversation will illuminate mysterious and wild paths to God. Drawing on the Midrash, as presented in the work of Avivah Zornberg, Blue looks beneath the ossified surface of our habitual responses to the Bible. She thereby uncovers contested meanings and alternative voices that grace the text. The Bible opens us to mystery, presenting fluid rather than fixed meanings. Blue is not without ethical concerns, however. Influenced by the writings of James Alison, she advocates a humane reading of the Bible, a reading that avoids the creation of villains and scapegoats. She invites the reader to suspend habitual judgments, to open herself to new images of God. In Blue's writing, the reader encounters an oceanic God -- a God who flows beyond the stony confines of our harsh judgments and small bigotries.
I should add that this book is a page-turner, which counts for a lot if one thinks theology ought to be read in churches, homes and on the bus, not just in seminaries and universities. Students of Barth, Nietzsche and the like will be amazed at how agilely Blue addresses weighty issues in readable, lively prose. She writes with the clarity and grace of an E.B. White. This is a book you'll actually want to read, not just stare at on your bookshelf.

Sharon Hinck is a wife and mother of four. She holds an M.A. in Communication from Regent University and spent ten years as the artistic director of a Christian performing arts group. She and her family live in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Giving voice to the broken and hope for us all

After turning the last page of Stepping Into Sunlight, my heart was full, and I was reminded again that God does indeed use broken people to pour forth His grace.

Sharon Hinck gives voice to the broken and shows how beautiful we are in God's eyes. Penny Sullivan's journey of healing is real and poignant and a clarion call to those of us who have and haven't experienced mental illness. To those who intimately know Penny's journey, Sharon offers hope and lights a path of healing. To those who may not understand Penny or family and friends like her, Stepping Into Sunlight offers an inside look that I pray ignites compassion and care toward the hurting.

Stepping Into Sunlight is not a manual for mental health, it's a beautiful story of one woman's journey that impacts all those around her in everyday amazing ways. It's a story to savor and ponder for weeks and months to come.

Stepping into Sunlight

This book had me hooked from the first sentence. As someone who suffers from PTSD and panic attacks brought on by it, I could relate to the character of Penny in a way that I have never related to any fictional character before. I thought this book was beautifully written by someone who can truly understand what a person suffering with these afflictions goes through. Sharon Hinck truly has a gift for storytelling and this is my favorite book by her so far. The book was able to articulate things that I have experienced but have been unable to share. I had my husband read passages of it so that he could get an understanding of what I battle. It is a tale of hope for those of us who suffer and one a great insight for those who may not but either way, it is a beautiful story!

Touching and Encouraging

Author Sharon Hinck has penned a novel that will touch the hearts of everyone who reads it. Penny, the character who is struggling after witnessing a violent crime and trying to be strong for her husband who is deployed and her son who needs her, is not a super mom. She's just trying to hold life together. Sharon shows the real world of post traumatic stress syndrome and the slow healing. No sugar coating. But there is hope, and Penny finds it, by showing kindness to others, and by finally facing her own demons. Beautifully written. Highly recommended.

It took me only a few days to read this book. I was rooting for Penny and had to see her through her journey. A book I literally could not put down.

A Disappointment

Given the fascinating topic, I really did want to like this book. Unfortunately, it suffers from several defects. First off, Mr. Allsop's writing is just plain bad: clunky and verbose, full of cliches (and even more full of grammatical errors), and peppered throughout with obscure Sanskrit words that are often not in the (rather brief) glossary at the back of the book. Second, the introductions that precede the interviews themselves are all irritatingly hagiographical. Because of an inability to distance himself from the sadhus and sannyasins he meets (he seems, quite frankly, sadhu-struck), Mr. Allsop is unable to present to the reader a flesh-and-blood person, and he fails to give the reader a tangible sense of how these people live their lives day to day and year to year in their adopted country. Third, the interviews themselves are singularly unilluminating and uninteresting: all twelve had a boilerplate quality to them. To a person, each interviewee (there are exceptions within some interviews here and there of course, but very few) came off as one-dimensional and had very little to say beyond vaporous musings about dharma and sammadhi and such, or a simplistic ragging on the West (a couple interviewees struck me as being mentally disturbed, but who had the good fortune to find a place for themselves in India). I suspect, however, that the interviews read the way they do because of the direction (or lack of it) provided by Mr. Allsop. (I imagine that the interviews would've been infinitely more interesting if, say, V.S. Naipaul were the interviewer.) Finally, the typography of the book is absolutely atrocious (as the previous reviewer also pointed out). The entire book is set in a 13/18 sans serif font. Most books are set in a 10/12 serif font (serifs, for those of you who don't know, are the little lines above and below certain letters). A sans serif font does not have these little lines and thus makes reading difficult; in fact, sans serif is almost exclusively used as a display font (a heading, for example). Furthermore, the tracking of the words (i.e., the spacing between individual letters in a word) is so tight as to make reading physically uncomfortable. As far as I can tell, this hideous font was used simply to bulk up the book (it would've been half the length if printed in a standard font). In conclusion, this book was a vanity project that was rightly turned down by mainstream publishers. Oh, that William Dalrymple could have written this book!

Illuminating culture

The spiritual seekers of the 60's and 70's by and large travelled to Asia, found gurus, lived in ashrams, and then came home. But Marcus Allsop has tracked down those who decided to renounce their former lives and stay in India. Living as ascetics near ashrams or in the backcountry, these Westerners have been assimilated into Indian culture, yet serve as unique witnesses to the interface between the "spiritual" East and the "material" West. Each individual Marcus meets reveals a depth of character that illuminates the attraction of Indian spiritual practices to the dispossesed and the just plain curious.
The book is an short and an easy read, but with further reflection, the depth of the themes revealed herein can be worthy of a lifetime of study.
This would have been a five-star book if the typeface was more readable. Unfortunately the designer didn't realize that most of us read better with serifs. People with astigmatism: beware.

Blessings

I ordered this book for my husband who was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma after spleen removal and is undergoing chemotherapy. I struggled with what to provide in terms of spiritual support, as he is Christian but not "religious." This book appears to be a good "match" for him. He reads sections during chemo and before he goes to bed. The book is a good blend of practical information/advice about cancer and treatments as well as prayers and spiritual reflections. This blend seems to work well for him as a computer networking engineer. Yesterday I saw tears on his cheeks after his reading, and he said "This guy knows what he's talking about. It's exactly how I feel." Then I got tears in MY eyes. I'm so glad he is being blessed and comforted by this work. Thank you, Randy.

I am on staff at a large church. We have a cancer support group and Everyday Strength: A Cancer Patient's Guide to Spiritual Survival has been very uplifting for so many of them. We highly recommend this book.

A blueprint for a better life

Debbie's book, "A Different Kind of Wild," inspired me to deepen my relationship with God. It provides a wonderful, Biblical roadmap for confronting issues such as forgiveness, trusting God in crisis and choosing to live better, God's way. I highly recommend this book for personal study or to use in a women's small group. It challenges us to face where we are and be better each day. ---And Debbie's real-life, candid examples make the process authentic and enjoyable. I'm already reading the book for a second time because the content is so rich. I intend to use it in my personal life and also buy copies for my close friends, sister, mom and aunts. Not only is it a must-read, but it's a must-do. It's time for you to discover, as I did, if your faith is too tame. I challenge you to read this book and learn what it means to be WILD in God's eyes.

Inspirational and life-changing

Debbie Alsdorf's "A Different Kind of Wild" is an inspiring non-fiction read. It is a boldly written book that offers life-changing challenges to women who desire to actively live in the Spirit. The author does this by introducing the concept of "living up", which is her ministry's focus.

"A Different Kind of Wild" is packed with pertinent scripture references and enlightening quotes. This book would be an ideal group read, as it is loaded with study questions at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book. These questions can lead to wonderful group discussion, or be used for personal reflection.

WILD for God with a Vertical Focus-Great Book!

Women in Lifelong development, or WILD women, is the author's theme for this book. Debbie Alsdorf walks the reader through many phases of spiritual development and demonstrates opportunities for being WILD in faith. She offers resources to fight spiritual battles, such as losing a friend to cancer, dealing with physical limitations and staying focused in a battle with Satan. Excellent reading and thoughtful solutions in each chapter. At the end of the book is a Study Guide for each chapter. After finishing the book, I realigned my focus from horizontal thinking (world centered) to vertical thinking (God centered). I've learned to "Look Up" and seek opportunities to be WILD for God. Great book!

About the Author
Julie Shigekuni is the author of Unending Nora (Red Hen Press 2008), Invisible Gardens (St. Martin's Press 2003), and A Bridge between Us (Anchor/Doubleday 1995), which was a finalist for the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Award and recipient of the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature. She grew up in Southern California, fled high school for the University of California at Santa Cruz, and subsequently lived in Tokyo and London. She received her BA from CUNY Hunter College and her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She is currently at work on a novella and short story collection and a sixty-minute video documentary, Manju Mammas and the An-Pan Brigade, for which she has received funding from the California Council for the Humanities and the Skirball Foundation and sponsorship from Visual Communications, an all-Asian media network. She is director of the creative writing program and development director of Asian American Studies at the University of New Mexico.

Another strong work by Shigekuni

As a teacher of American literature at a community college in Dallas, Texas, I shared Unending Nora with my students last year, and it is the third Shigekuni novel that my students have enjoyed with me over the past decade. Julie Shigekuni is a great story teller, and she continues to focus on the Japanese American experience in fresh and insightful ways. By now many American students have some familiarity with the World War II internment period, but what has gotten far less attention is the effect of this devastating and uniquely racist persecution afterwards -- upon the generations of Japanese Americans that followed the end of the war. The camps have long been emptied, but no matter how much economic achievement and 'blending in' Japanese Americans manage, the internment hangs over them like a dark shadow. Shigekuni's characters in Unending Nora all grapple with identity issues to one extent or another. Some of them cope successfully, and they are inspirations to the rest of us.

It may be news to many readers that for some Japanese Americans Christianity emerged as one refuge in the post war years. In a wickedly pointed fashion, Shigekuni explores ways that Christianity was unable to provide support or community or relevance to psychologically vulnerable characters. Nora is the misfit girl in a church going community that itself feels misfit to the mainstream dominant society. Nora commands the reader's sympathy, and she haunts the other characters in Shigekuni's book.

From her first book, A Bridge Between Us, to this one, Unending Nora, Shigekuni has written with such courage and imagination and variety. As an artist she continues to grow. Shigekuni is a little bit Amy Tan and a little bit Franz Fanon; that is, your commumnity matters, but it can not save you. I think she is saying this. You have to recognize your circumstances in a society that can be both seductive and oppressive, and you have to reach within your strengths in order to establish your sense of self.

I can't wait for Julie Shigekuni's next book!

A wonderful map of previously uncharted lives

If you have ever watched a group of people through a restaurant window, gathered in front yard or at a church service and wondered about the stories that connected them to each other or how the unspoken experiences of one generation take on unending narrative power in a subsequent generations, then you will find a like mind in Julie Shigekuni and her third book, "Unending Nora." This book takes on large themes in the Japanese American community that have formed one generation after the Internment Camps by treating them not as ideas but as lived experiences. Shigekuni can take ideas about culture, religion, friendship and the recuperation of love, wrap them in an engrossing mystery story, bind them to the flesh and bone of complex characters, and set them loose to work on the reader as if they were reading about his or her own life. I loved this book for its take on the post-internment Japanese American community, for its treatment of young Japanese American women as the holders of their own stories, and for just being so damn pleasurable to read.

Unending Praise

This book is amazing and I read it slowly because I didn't want it to end. The angst-filled character of Nora was the somewhat removed center of onion-like layers of intense relationships, dialogue, stories, and heart-wrenching discoveries. I found myself underlining sentences and paragraphs packed with beautiful prose, and soon my book was fully highlighted. I appreciate Shigekuni's thoughtful details and imaginative ideas that make this story the great read it is.

Explaining the Religion of Science

Anyone examining the debates surrounding evolution and various alternatives, including "intelligent design," cannot help but be struck by the vehemence with which advocates of the former attack the latter. Whether on Amazon reviews and discussion boards, or in the broader scientific and popular literature, Darwinists attack those who disagree with them in an manner that far exceeds what one would expect from one scientist simply disagreeing with another's interpretation of the data. This is because the question literally involves the personal religion of those who support the current neo Darwinian synthesis. Despite the claims that supporters of evolution routinely make, namely that they are opposing "religious" fundamentalism, the fact remains that their basic suppositions are religious. This new book by biophysicist Cornelius Hunter examines these religious assumptions and lays bare their strengths and weaknesses in the historical sciences.

The story of modern science begins with Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes, each of whom rejected the rationalist theories of Aristotle. They did so, however, in very different ways. Bacon supported a moderate empiricism. Stressing observation and experimentation, he suggested science as such limit itself to observable and testable hypotheses. In contrast, Descartes advocated a new rationalism: one in which all science would pursue naturalistic explanations and use these explanations, even if they did not yield useful predictions, because such explanations were inherently superior to supernatural (or non-natural) paradigms. The approaches found in the work of both Bacon and Descartes have had an enormous influence on the world of science today, but in terms of what Hunter describes as the "historical" sciences (the origins of the universe, the solar system, and, of course, the "Origin of Species") Descartes rationalism has been by far the dominant influence.

People, however, are not generally aware of the extent to which rationalism, particularly in its naturalist expression, is the result of religious influences. The heart of Hunter's book outlines these influences. Theological naturalism was a solution to the problem of reconciling creation with a wise and loving creator. For theological naturalists, assigning creation to various natural laws isolates God from perceived imperfections or "evils" in the world. Hunter dwells into the history of naturalism, highlighting the often neglected whig theologian Thomas Burnet along with better known figures like Immanuel Kant. But ultimately, this theological naturalism led to a methodological naturalism in the sciences. The search for exclusively natural clauses became something of a game rule in science, but the theological basis for it is often overlooked.

Nonetheless, naturalism presents problems, not the least of which is the "blind spot" referenced in the title of the book. When a naturalistic paradigm fails, it does not occur to scientists to examine non-natural explanations. Indeed, there is a tendency to create false dichotomies (either evolution is "true" or all observations of species must reveal only some sort of ideal perfection--otherwise there would be a "bad" design which a creator or other designer could not possibly make.) Needless to add, this sort of reasoning effectively pre-empts alternative suggestions. But it also includes stunning theological suppositions that its adherents are loath to acknowledge. Why, for example, must we assume that a designer would always opt for what we consider a perfect design? As Hunter correctly notes, that this was an assumption of some 18th century natural theologians hardly means it is prescriptive for all natural theology.

There are a number of important implications to the arguments in Hunter's book. One is that religious assumptions are far more common in the sciences than many would be willing to acknowledge. Indeed, much of the "evidence" in Darwin's 'Origin of Species' is essentially theological arguments about how nature "should be" rather than simply an empirical discussion of how it is. Historians have known this for some time. (Readers interested in pursuing this subject further should examine historian Gertrude Himmelfarb's masterful Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution.) But amazingly enough, such reasoning persists into the modern era. When SJ Gould declares the Panda's Thumb an inadequate design, he is making a theological claim, not a scientific one. Similar arguments abound in supposedly scientific literature. That these same writers are often critical of design theorists for supposedly bringing "religious" values and ideas into science merely demonstrates the extent of the blindspot Hunter describes.

But this book raises a broader question as well. Is "science" possible without some metaphysical insight. Although Hunter does not mention it, in the broadest sense the answer to this question is no. We must, as Einstein admitted, acknowledge that a prerequisite of science is the presumption that the universe is understandable at all. But beyond that, can a science be constructed that is truly empirical? Or are we stuck between the theological naturalism of many modern biologists, and the theological alternative(s) suggested by intelligent design. Hunter suggests it can by returning to Bacon's "moderate" empiricism. But what would such an empiricism entail? For one thing, it would require the admission that naturalism really is only a game rule, and not an overarching theological construct as it is for such scientists as Howard Van Till and Kenneth Miller. It would also require that we reject the few atheists (Daniel Dennet and Richard Dawkins come to mind here) who attempt to appropriate naturalism for their own purposes. As a game rule, naturalism is not a "universal solvent" that dissolves all religious claims, whatever our atheist friends might wish. Accepting Hunter's moderate empiricism would not even "destroy" evolution as a useful working hypothesis. But it would have the effect of seriously limiting what questions science could answer. More important, it would require that we again integrate learning. As Hunter so eloquently notes, there "are rich multifaceted problems that include reasoning from a variety of disciplines. We cannot understand such problems with narrow appeals to just science, or just philosophy, or just theology, or just history. The full range of knowledge ought to be considered."(p.145) The research possibilities such a moderate empiricism offers are tremendous, but they undermine the dominance theological naturalism currently enjoys under the label of "science," and it is unlikely the high priesthood of this religion will give up so easily. Indeed, they currently enjoy a monopoly on the presentation of their religious views in the public sector and they are unlikely to share it. After all, it is easier to accuse one's opponents of religious fanaticism than to examine the mote in one's own eye.

Seeing Clearly Requires Removing the Blind Spot!

Ideas have consequences. This book is about science's commitment to naturalism to the point of being scientism, essentially a religion where anything that does not fit the naturalistic presupposition is ruled out as irrelevant and irrational, that includes anything that is religious unless your religion is of the type that only concerns your personal experience and says nothing objective about the nature of the real world or society. For those of us who believe that our religion informs all areas of life, this is unacceptable. Since the author, Cornelius Hunter, is himself a scientist as well as a Christian, his book is especially helpful.

Cornelius Hunter was senior vice president of Seagull Technology, Inc., a high-tech firm in Silicon Valley. He is currently, at least at the time of the writing of this book, engaged in molecular biophysics post-doctoral and engineering research in Cameron Park, California. He is also adjunct professor of science and religion at Biola University. He completed his Ph.D. in biophysics at the University of Illinois. He has, in addition to this book under review, authored Darwin's God: Evolution and the Problem of Evil, and also Darwin's Proof: The Triumph of Religion over Science. With these books, Hunter has joined the ranks of a growing number of scholars who find scientific naturalism, and more specifically Darwinian evolution, without much, if any, scientific merit, and based more on aberrant philosophy and theology than on science. Phillip Johnson approvingly quotes Hunter from previous books in his observation that "at its core, evolution is about God, not science." Michael Behe notes that in "lucid and engaging prose, Hunter shines a light on Darwinian theology, making plain what is too often obscured by technical jargon." And William Dembski says that "Hunter unmasks [the] theological mode of argumentation and argues convincingly that it is not merely incidental but indeed essential to how Darwinists justify evolution." Guillermo Gonzalez writes of the current book: "Science's Blind Spot is a must-read for anyone wishing to understand why those who oppose intelligent design are becoming more entrenched as the evidence for it continues to build."

The book Science's Blind Spot contains a Preface and nine chapters. Chapter 1 is titled What's Wrong with Science. Chapter 2 is titled The Revolution That Wasn't. Chapter 3 is titled Science's Blind Spot. Chapter 4 is A God in the Machine. Chapter 5 is Nature's Innovative Power. Chapter 6 is When Predictions Go Wrong. Chapter 7 is Inherit the Wind All Over Again. Chapter 8 is Theological Naturalism. And Chapter 9 is titled Moderate Empiricism.

In Chapter 1, Hunter, who is himself a scientist, introduces the theme of his book, and argues that there is something wrong with science: what is wrong is religion being involved in it. However, surprising to some, the religion that corrupts science is not Christianity or some other organized religion, but the religion of naturalism. He suggests that "The problem is that religion has joined science. . . . science itself, according to many commentators, is free of theological guide or constraint. Nothing could be further from the truth. . . . the primary theological ground rule is that scientific explanation must be purely naturalistic. . . . The term theological naturalism reminds us that the assumption of naturalism in science is neither a result of atheistic influence nor an empirically based scientific finding. It is a consequence of metaphysical reasoning, and the implications for science are profound."

Chapter 2 is a little heavy in philosophy and theology, but that is at the root of where we are in science today so it appears to be unavoidable. Where theology went astray is where science went astray, precisely because it was erroneous developments within Christianity that led to incorrect theological assumptions within science. The basic split was between those who take the Scriptures as necessary revelation for proper religious understanding and those who assumed that reason alone was sufficient for a complete Christian understanding of men and God. Hunter focuses upon Bacon and Descartes as prominent representatives of the two approaches, because they were both Christians and both scientists. Bacon was the pragmatist who argued for limits to science, focused on the practical, and was the empiricist. However, Descartes argued for no limits to science, promoted speculation in the sciences, and was the rationalist. Descartes won out, but why was that? Hunter answers that question in this chapter. Surprising to some, Descartes won by his theological arguments. The arguments are a bit complex and perhaps even a little foreign to our thinking today, but they were based on such things as the problem of evil in the world, and that it would be somehow unbecoming for God to have to intervene in His own creation. Again, this sort of development occurred in the heady days of rationalism, where surely man with his own intelligence alone should be sufficient to figure all of these things out without the need for any revelation from God. These were the days of the development of Deism, and later liberal theology. Lest we think this is just historical and of little relevance to us today, Hunter quotes Ken Miller, a professing Christian, scientist, and leading exponent of evolution as asking the rhetorical question, would God "really want to take credit for the mosquito"? Among other developments that led to naturalism within science was the growing sentiment within religion as well as science against miracles, again against the revelation of Scripture and based solely on rational concerns: some theologians found miracles to be, well, awkward. For similar reasons, the tradition of uniformitarianism was embraced by many in the sciences not because of growing evidence for it, but for rational, theological concerns. The upshot of Chapter 2 is that scientific naturalism did not develop from atheism, but from theological naturalism. Theological naturalism, as well as scientific naturalism, "is not opposed to all things religious - it is religious." It is not God that is excluded, it is an intervening God that is excluded, contra to the Scriptures. From thence comes methodological naturalism. Hunter develops these ideas throughout the remainder of the book.

In Chapter 3, Hunter addresses directly what he calls science's blind spot. The blind spot is that science does not recognize that scientific pursuits are based on two main components: a certain amount of rationalism and also empiricism. Some seem to think that it is all empirical, and it isn't. One long quote seems to summarize the chapter fairly well: "The problem with science is not that the naturalistic approach might occasionally be inadequate. The problem is that science would never know any better. This is science's blind spot. When problems are encountered, theological naturalism assumes that the correct naturalistic solution has not yet been found. Nonnatural phenomena will be interpreted as natural, regardless of how implausible the story becomes. Science has no mechanism to detect the possibility of nonnatural phenomena. It does not consider the likelihood that a phenomenon might not be purely naturalistic. . . . Theological naturalism has no way to distinguish a paradigm problem from a research problem. It cannot consider the possibility that there is no naturalistic explanation for the DNA code. If a theory of natural history has problems - and many of them have their share - the problems are always viewed as research problems and never as paradigm problems."

In Chapter 4, cosmology is considered. In recent years, a great deal has been made by some of the high degree of fine tuning that seems to be apparent in the universe in order for intelligent life to occur on planet earth. Most cosmologists seem to recognize this problem, and that is why something as bizarre as proposed multiple universes (now isn't that an oxymoron!) are actually being considered. "The universe's fine-tuning seems quite peculiar, but theological naturalism mandates a naturalistic explanation. The multiverse hypothesis provides such an explanation. For some cosmologists, multiverses make the fine-tuning seem `much less miraculous.' The multiverse hypothesis is another example of science's blind spot."

In Chapters 5, 6, and 7, evolution is considered. In Chapter 5 Hunter presents the idea that nature, according to some, is inherently innovative and has produced all of the wide variations of life by natural means through the mechanism of evolution. To some this is obvious. "According to Darwinists, the theory of evolution is so obvious and compelling that it should be considered to be a fact rather than a theory. Just as gravity and the roundness of the earth are facts, so too evolution is a fact. As Darwinists explain, there really is no counterevidence. Everything in biology is what we would expect if evolution were true. Evolution's predictions, they claim, have all come true." However, Hunter states that the problem with this last statement is that it isn't true: "The problem is that evolution has a great many fundamental predictions gone wrong." He points out a rather obvious problem that dates back to the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species: while modern adherents say that Darwin provided a mechanism through which evolution occurs, namely variation followed by natural selection, and that this is one theory by which micro-evolution may occur, the content of Darwin's book was on the origin of species: a problem that is unresolved and for which little if any progress has been made. Even the simple problem of adaptation seems to involve more than random variation and natural selection: the ability to adapt seems to be hardwired. Another basic problem is many complex functions that exist in a variety of species cannot conceivably have a common ancestor with that function. Another problem is that similar functions in what appear to be cousin species cannot be shown to have similar genes or developmental pathways, which evolution would logically predict.

In Chapter 6 Hunter continues with the problem of predictions based on evolutionary theory that have gone wrong. Hunter asks the following: "But what happens when similar designs are discovered in distant species, so distant that a common ancestor cannot be used to explain their origin? What happens when common solutions are found in species that, even according to evolution, are widely divergent? These cases are unexpected surprises to evolutionists, for they contradict evolution's prediction that biology is beholden to a contingent process. . . . Furthermore, there are too many known examples where similar designs appear in distant species, in spite of different environments and in spite of the availability of competing designs." Hunter also criticizes evolutionary theory due to a lack of consistency when it comes to evolutionary tree diagrams that are supposed to at least suggest potential developmental pathways. An "evolutionary tree based on one set of data (say the visible features of the species) should be similar to a tree based on a separate set of data (say the molecular features of the same set of species). It would be a daunting task to document the multitude of falsifications of this prediction that have been tallied so far. . . . Instead of a single evolutionary tree emerging from the data, there is a wealth of competing evolutionary trees." However, Hunter observes that "In the face of daunting evidential problems, evolutionists are oblivious to any hint of a theoretical breakdown."

In Chapter 7 Hunter reconsiders the play and movie by the title of Inherit the Wind. The play, and then the movie, were loosely based on the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Ohio. For many, Inherit the Wind "reveals what they believe to be the core essentials of the origins debate: objective science versus religious dogma." However, Hunter believes it is just the opposite: whatever we had in 1925, today we have those blindly committed to evolution, and naturalism in general, who are "now part of a new kind of anti-intellectualism." It is those committed to naturalism who will not even permit serious objections to be raised against the theory of evolution. No counterevidence is allowed. No questions are allowed. Objections such as those raised in this book by Hunter are not permitted in the classroom: not at the high school level nor at the university level. Even in a court of law, highly qualified scientists giving testimony concerning serious scientific objections to the theory of evolution will be subjected to intense cross examination, looking into their motives and religious affiliations, while those presenting the party line receive no such examination.

In Chapter 8 Hunter investigates the underlying philosophy that has caused the reverse Inherit the Wind scenario and the blind spot in modern science. He demonstrates how philosophical naturalism, theological naturalism, and methodological naturalism are related. Hunter had shown in previous chapters that naturalism was actually developed by religious people for religious concerns, no matter how wrong they may have been, (see the index entry for theological naturalism), and therefore naturalism was not developed by atheists to promote atheism, as some Christians may assume it to be. The problem is laid directly at the feet of religious people, and it is still today that professing Christians give support to scientific naturalism. Although the ideas were not developed to promote skepticism, that has been the result. "Although the driving concern for naturalists was theological and they were not promoting atheism, there can be little doubt that today their ideas have fueled religious skepticism. If there is no divine action, or at least no detectable divine action, then it is understandable that some might take the next logical step to religious skepticism." As examples of two misguided modern professing Christians who are scientists, Hunter refers to Ken Miller and Howard Van Till: "Biology professor Ken Miller argues that God would never want to take credit for such evils as the mosquito. Furthermore, Western religion mandates evolution. `The freedom to act and choose enjoyed by each individual in the Western religious tradition,' explains Miller, `requires that God allow the future of His creation to be left open.' In other words, evolution must be true and it must be independent of God; otherwise `how could the future truly be open.' Physicist Howard Van Till argues that a god who created the world and then subsequently set about creating species at different times is `theologically awkward.'" Hunter refers to a number of other scientists as well, who think they serve God well by embracing naturalistic evolution. "These views are typical of today's theological naturalists. Their theological views are varied, but the common thread is methodological naturalism. Divine action must not be detectable. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that theological naturalists accept evolution as a scientific fact." Hunter's main point is that just like today, in Darwin's day and before naturalism and evolution were developed for religious reasons, no matter how wrongheaded, and not because scientific evidence led to naturalism and evolution. And yet, many today are ignorant of such historical developments and even of the theological naturalism of today!

In Chapter 9, the last chapter, Hunter makes his positive case for what he calls moderate empiricism. In my opinion, although not specifically mentioned in the Preface and therefore maybe I am extrapolating, the contents of Chapter 9 are really the purpose for this book being written. In a delightful contrast with most books, all of the previous chapters come together in the last chapter allowing for a cogent positive statement of how things ought to be. In other words, the previous chapters were analysis of where we are in terms of the philosophy of science and what's wrong with it, and Chapter 9 is a positive statement of the way things should be. Chapter 9 is the most impassioned plea for proper scientific investigation that I have read, and all of the earlier chapters explain how we went wrong. It sheds great light on the differences between empiricism and rationalism (and related presuppositionalism). The prevailing philosophy of science is based on rationalism, not, as many suppose, empiricism. It is based on a specific presupposition of naturalism, and excludes any line of investigation that does not presume naturalism. Hunter's insights here, as developed throughout the book, are very helpful and penetrating. He does not embrace full empiricism, but rather makes good arguments for what he calls "moderate empiricism." His appeal is not to embrace something really new, but rather the position that had been championed by Francis Bacon (father of the modern scientific method, according to Encyclopedia Britannica online at [...] Robert Boyle, and others. It is a modest, humble approach to the pursuit of knowledge about the world, and therefore will not likely appeal to the arrogant, proud, adherents to the prevailing philosophy of science (even if, as is probably true of most, they have no idea of what their philosophy of science is), which assumes that the only acceptable answer to any question is a naturalistic one. This is, at the fundamental level, a philosophical or even theological position, not one based on empirical evidence. Moderate empiricism, while appreciating what science has accomplished and the power of the scientific method, also realizes how very little we understand and attempts to be open to where the evidence may lead. This seems like a modest appeal, and it is one that well-known scientists of an earlier era embraced, yet one rejected today.

This book takes on the basic approach that science as practiced today pursues. It illustrates how this is not how science has always been pursued, and gives good reasons why it is inferior to moderate empiricism. It makes a very important contribution to the current debate over intelligent design theory, as well as evidence for and against the theory of evolution. These current debates, in the light of this book, appear to be more over philosophy and theology than over science per se. Unfortunately, many, perhaps most, practicing scientists have no background, either formal or informal, in philosophy and/or theology. Their lack of education (either formal or informal) in these subjects, even though their degree may be Doctor of Philosophy (historically, pursuing a professional degree in science was recognized as an area of natural philosophy), certainly does not contribute anything positive to the current debate, and suggests that we, as a society, have become much too narrow in our professional degrees. This book, hopefully, will be widely read and serve to correct what is apparently a significant misunderstanding in our society.

Revealing Look at the Overlooked Role of Metaphysics in the History & Philosophy of Science

In "Science's Blind Spot," biophysicist Dr. Cornelius G. Hunter provides an insightful look at the role of metaphysics in modern science. In particular, he gives readers a succinct overview of the role naturalistic theological assumptions that have influenced the historical sciences in recent times, moving from cosmology to biology.

For Hunter, metaphysical influences are all but inevitable and by themselves pose no necessary impediment to scientific understanding and progress. He argues that it is essential that we be aware of the constraining impact of those influences in to avoid force-fitting data into preconceived conclusions. But important scientific findings, suggests Hunter, reveals how our modern demand that only undirected processes be considered in science has prevented other explanations that might better account for what we observe in the natural world. Along the way, Hunter examines the metaphysical influences behind ideas such as multiverse theory and the theory of neo-Darwinian evolution.

In the concluding pages, Hunter makes a plea for the scientific community to embrace a modest empiricism that focuses more narrowly upon empirical findings that can be observed and verified through experimentation. Particularly where the historical sciences are involved, Hunter calls for a more modest approach to the scientific enterprise that is conscious of its own limits. He goes on to suggest that the theory of intelligent design fits within such an inquisitive atmosphere and that it be given careful consideration. (But Hunter just scratches the surface in this last respect, as this book is NOT about intelligent design.)

In two previous books, Hunter focused upon the metaphysics inspiring and affirming Darwin's theory of evolution and its modern form. But it is not necessary to have read those books in order to get the full benefit from "Science's Blind Spot." Given the scope of this book, readers might want to read this book before considering Hunter's intriguing work "Darwin's God."

Despite whatever technical or semi-technical jargon appears in this review, "Science's Blind Spot" is a very accessible book. It reads quickly, too. This book is thought provoking and is recommended to those interested in the role of metaphysics in modern science.
