Liberating Tradition (RenewedMinds): Women's Identity and Vocation in Christian Perspective, by Kristina LaCelle-Peterson

Kristina LaCelle-Peterson seeks both to affirm the central place of Scripture in the Christian life and to highlight the liberating nature of the gospel for both men and women. To do this the author considers the biblical ideal for human beings and then proceeds to offer a biblical foundation for each of the topics under discussion--identity, body image, personal relationships, marriage, church life, and language for God. Along the way she examines the cultural nature of gender roles and the ways in which they have become entangled with ecclesial expectations. This book will help women better appreciate themselves as women, gain a better understanding of their value in God's eyes, and recognize their potential for meaningful engagement in a variety of relationships and vocational callings.

From the Back Cover
In this work, Kristina LaCelle-Peterson seeks to affirm the central place of Scripture in Christian life and highlight the liberating nature of the gospel for both men and women. She first considers the biblical ideal for human beings and then offers a biblical foundation for various topics, from identity and body image to language for God. She also examines the cultural nature of gender roles and the ways in which these roles have become entangled with ecclesial expectations.

Liberating Tradition offers a clear, Christian perspective on the issues that women face in the twenty-first century. The book does not provide a Christian gloss on the field of gender studies as it exists, but rather offers a gender-informed, scholarship-based, Christian platform from which to enter into dialogue with the scholars and scholarship that constitute that field.

"Powerfully written, powerfully argued. A real manifesto for those desiring a biblical understanding of the manifold issues associated with our concepts of gender."--Catherine Kroeger, founder and former president of Christians for Biblical Equality

"LaCelle-Peterson has written a book that is at once biblical, engaging, comprehensive, forthright, balanced, and caring. It should be especially helpful for those on the 'women's side' of the debate to read something as irenic as this; and hopefully these same features will calm some of the rhetoric on the other side. I am glad to commend it to all."--Gordon Fee, professor emeritus, Regent College; coauthor, How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth

"Compelling, informative, and comprehensive! This book does exactly as the title suggests--liberates. If one wants to read a single book to understand gender issues, this is it! Simultaneously, the reader is inspired to 'lean into all God created us to be.'"--Jo Anne Lyon, founder/chief executive officer, World Hope International

Amazing Book
By Rachel Thompson
Peterson's book has been extremely helpful to me as a young Christian woman trying to better understand what it means to be a woman of God. What makes this book so wonderful is not only the clear, concise way the author explains her ideas, but how rooted in Scripture her arguments are. I would recommend this book to any Christian woman who is tired of the conservative Church's erroneous, gendered ideas about what she is and what she should be.

Liberating Book
By renewtheruins
This book presents to the overly conservative church audience a view they need to hear. Women are still being treated unfairly, especially in the church. Jesus was one of the first "feminists", continually singling women out. The "feminist" movement also actually began in the church! She also explores the negative connotations of the word "feminist" and the language of the feminist movement. Though you may not agree with every word written, this book will challenge you.

Excellent resource for Evangelical women!
By Roberta Mosier-Peterson
Dr. LaCelle-Peterson did great work here. It is thorough and thought provoking. Because I'm sure to continually glean from the contents which will include reading the detailed footnotes, I should have bought it in print instead of kindle. However, the kindle version is well indexed and fairly easy to navigate. I would highly recommend this for all college educated Evangelical women who are struggling to untangle the schizophrenic messages handed down to them in their churches.

A Biblical Case for an Old Earth, by David Snoke

The present creation-evolution debate is often cast as a choice between two positions: naturalistic evolution over millions of years or miraculous creation six thousand years ago. When simplified, this choice is often presented as one between science and the Bible, a choice that leaves much ground between the two views yet to be
discussed.

A Biblical Case for an Old Earth seeks to address the gap between theistic evolutionism and young-earth creationism by finally paying due attention to the biblical aspect of the debate. Both a scientist and a preacher, David Snoke presents a theological study of several themes in the evolution discussion, including the balance theme of Scripture and the day-age interpretation. Complete with an appendix that gives a literal translation of Genesis 1-11, this intriguing study will interest both scientists and lay Christians who want to dig into the faith-science intersection.

Young-earth creationism? Naturalistic evolution? Isn't there another choice?

Yes, there is.

Respected physicist and professor Dr. David Snoke argues that the Bible does tell us about the scientific history of our world, but it does not teach that the world was created recently. He offers a compelling biblical case that the young-earth position is theologically flawed.

Drawing out the deeper themes of Scripture often lost in modern discussion, Snoke shows how the biblical texts as well as modern scientific discoveries are better explained by a day-age model. He argues that the earth is millions of years old-and created miraculously by God.

Anyone interested in how science and faith relate and what the Bible says about the age of the earth will appreciate this readable, biblically grounded explanation of old-earth creationism.

"As both a respected scientist and elder of the Presbyterian Church of America, David Snoke brings great breadth and erudition to the question of whether an old earth is an orthodox interpretation of the teachings of the Bible. No matter what one's initial position, A Biblical Case for an Old Earth will certainly provoke Christians to think more deeply about this often divisive topic."--Michael J. Behe, author, Darwin's Black Box

"A marvelous book! Dr. Snoke gives us a powerful biblical warrant for an old earth, the best I've ever seen. You need to read this book, whether you're already convinced or not."--Robert C. Newman, professor, Biblical Theological Seminary; director, Interdisciplinary Biblical Research Institute

About the Author
David Snoke is associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh, a licensed preacher, and an ordained elder in the Pittsburgh presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of America. He has published over seventy articles in scientific journals and two scientific books. He also has published five philosophical articles in the Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, a journal of the American Scientific Affiliation.

Important contribution to creationist debate
By John A. Battle
David Snoke is an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh and is an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America, in which denomination he also is licensed to preach. As is true in many evangelical denominations in America, the PCA has gone through a struggle between young earth and old earth creationists, with many young earth creationists declaring that those holding to an old earth should not be allowed to preach or hold office. The PCA has decided against this exclusive policy, but the controversy continues. Snoke has written this book as a defense of the old earth position.

Snoke spends some time with the scientific arguments for an old earth, which he summarizes quite well. These include arguments from starlight, from magnetic domains on the ocean floor, and from other well known phenomena on Earth showing the passage of time. He also spends some time showing how flood geology will not account for the geological layers we observe.

However, most of the book, as the title indicates, deals with biblical and theological arguments. Snoke demonstrates how it is necessary to use our experience in the world, including our observations, when interpreting the Bible--the Bible was not written in a vacuum. The fullest and most helpful discussions in the book, in my opinion, describe the very good creation of Genesis as containing both positive, helpful, parts, and dark, dangerous parts. He does a good job explaining the place of the "sea" and "sea monsters" in Hebrew biblical thought. Snokes is very convincing showing that the "very good" creation included danger and death in the plant and animal kingdom, and danger for the human kingdom. This "dark side" also glorifies God in many OT texts.

Somewhat detracting is the lengthy appendix consisting of his own translation of Genesis 1-11. Snoke's translation is indiosyncratic, and his linguistic procedures are poor when handling idioms or handling the same Hebrew term in contexts where it has different meanings. He admits not being a Hebrew expert. A better procedure would have been to take a standard translation and suggest changes or make clarifications in parentheses. Yet, in spite of this anti-climactic appendix, the book is very valuable showing how the Hebrew and the OT world would have understood the text much differently than modern young earth creationists do.

An Important Work on Creationism
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom
Young-earthism myth has had a grip on many Christians for decades. They have refused scholarly debate on the issue and try to label opponents "liberals" and "compromisers." Young-earthism has led many to question the Bible and has even driven many to thiestic evolution. But here is a reasoned and even-handed book that looks at the myth of young-earthism and shows the day-age interpretation is sound and without contradiction. People interested in this topic, and serious about a resolution, should add this book to their reading list. Delivers what the title promises
By Paul R. Bruggink
Since Young Earth Creationists believe that God's Word trumps God's works every time, the only approach that would have a chance of succeeding in getting YECs to consider the possibility of Old Earth Creationism would be to demonstrate that the Bible can be interpreted to support (or at least not preclude) OEC.

David Snoke's "A Biblical Case for an Old Earth" takes a giant step in this direction. First he builds a case for the legitimacy of allowing experience to affect our interpretation of the Bible. After a chapter in the scientific case for an old earth, he presents an extensive and well-reasoned discussion of animal death before the fall, which he perceives as one of the significant issues in the YEC vs. OEC debate.

He then covers the leviathan, the Sabbath rest, miracles, interpreting Genesis 1 & 2, and Noah's Flood, using all of these discussions to gently support Old Earth Creationism. He clearly states his own personal views on each issue.

Throughout the book, he demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the entire Bible, particularly in bringing out relevant parallelisms in Hebrew Scripture. His knowledge of science (Ph.D. in physics) benefits the text on numerous occasions.

This book is written for the Christian layman, both YEC and OEC.

How far is too far? The successful Hungry Planet book Technical Virgin answered that question for girls. But what about the guys? Don't they too have questions about purity and sex that they want answered without preachiness or pandering? You bet they do.
And that's where Almost Sex comes in.
In the tradition of Technical Virgin, this book speaks frankly to guys about the common misconceptions even Christian youths have about sexual loopholes that allow them to experience sexual activity without marriage. Michael DiMarco pulls no punches as he confronts guys with the choice between what the world calls acceptable and what God requires of his followers.

Organized in such a way that youth groups can study both Almost Sex and Technical Virgin at the same time, this new book helps young men cope with all aspects of sexuality, including the difference between flirting and foreplay, what girls want from guys, emotional virginity, friends with benefits, and much more.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on the Anabaptist traditions, Fuller Theological Seminary professor Augsburger explores what spirituality looks like when it imitates Jesus and is directed outward in service to the world, instead of inward on the self. This is not the usual all-about-me spirituality book nor does it focus solely on community to the exclusion of the individual, but it balances the needs of people and communities as they try to imitate the ways of Jesus. In clear and accessible language, Augsburger recommends and explores eight practices: radical attachment, stubborn loyalty, tenacious serenity, habitual humility, resolute nonviolence, concrete service, authentic witness and subversive spirituality. Each chapter begins with several stories and ends with meditations that make what might otherwise be strictly theoretical into practices readers can imagine emulating. Those who are tired of the same old spirituality books will find surprises. The chapter on humility, for instance, looks at "humor that enhances spirituality" and at holy fools. Augsburger has written a book that is challenging but still pastoral; it is realistic and honest about the cost of true discipleship even as it encourages readers to embrace that path. (June)

Discipleship- The True Calling of the Church
By Starrider7777
I bought "Dissident Discipleship" during my lunch hour today I have already managed to read about 5 chapters. I find this book to support and re-inforce the theme and thesis of another book I just read, "Mere Discipleship: Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World," by Lee C. Camp.

"Mere Discipleship," blew my socks off and has completely shifted my paradigms as well as those whom I have persuaded to also read it. After reading "Mere Discipleship" I felt so empowered and so close to the truth that I had to talk about it and had to seek similar material. "Dissident Discipleship" is very much on the same track as "Mere Discipleship"- they are both published by Brazos Press.

I am looking foreward to further devouring Augsburger's offering..I like what I have seen so far and have much affinity for what he says in the 5th chapter entitled "The Practice of Resolute Non-Violence" and under the sub heading of "Love Not The Domination System". Based on what I have read there alone I can already reccomend this book and offer my opinion that every Christian should read it as well as the other book I have mentioned. I believe that the Church in general is bound for a cultural shift on par with the reformation...these books are part of the vanguard of that revolution.

anabaptist discipleship
By Daniel B. Clendenin
A friend once observed that our church teaching and preaching ought to "put the cookies on a higher shelf." Setting the bar higher is exactly what David Augsburger tries to do in his new book Dissident Discipleship. In contrast to what he calls "standard Christian spirituality," authentic or genuine discipleship is necessarily "dissident" because it radically subverts conventional wisdom and values. In the words of Jim Wallis, "What matters most today is whether one is a supporter of establishment Christianity or a practitioner of biblical faith. Establishment Christianity has made its peace with the established order. It no longer feels itself to be in conflict with the pretensions of the state, with the designs of economic and political power, or with the values and style of life enshrined in the national culture. Establishment Christianity is a religion of accommodation and conformity, which values realism and success more than faithfulness and obedience" (p. 204).

Drawing upon his deep roots in the Anabaptist tradition, Augsburger proposes a "tripolar" spirituality with three interdependent movements--upward towards God, inward towards self, and outward towards neighbor, in contrast to "monopolar" and "bipolar" spiritualities. In successive chapters he describes the seven traits or practices of this subversive spirituality: radical attachment, stubborn loyalty, tenacious serenity, habitual humility, resolute nonviolence, concrete service, and authentic witness. After a concluding chapter he includes six appendices. Given his Anabaptist heritage, Augsburger interacts with the sorts of scholarly sources that you would expect (Kraybill, Wallis, Stringfellow, Yoder, Will Campbell, Tolstoy, etc).

Theologically, the Anabaptist tradition epitomizes Niebuhr's "Christ against culture" paradigm, so believers who are inclined, say, to the paradigms of "Christ of culture" or "Christ above culture" will take exception to its underlying assumptions. Practically, in claiming that his is "not your ordinary garden variety, but the stubborn, persistent, radical spirituality appearing in unusual people across the last two thousand years," Augsburger inadvertently, and I am sure unintentionally, claims the high ground for an elite marine corp of spirituality. The majority of "usual" and "ordinary" believers who are enmeshed in the compromises and contradictions of every day lives, jobs, families, finances, etc. are consigned to the status of pikers and posers. Finally, I found Augsburger's book overwritten and awkward in style (eg, "I suspected that he knew I knew that he knew I knew." p. 100). In the end, though, he does a fine job of pointing us toward Truth North. Reading the Sermon of the Mount convinces me of that.

save your money for Bonhoeffer
By Christian Reader
I consider myself a simple person--a grandfather from a farming background with an undergraduate degree--and I question how a book like this gets published. It reads like a wandering rough draft. The whole thing needs to be sharpened and distilled, and half of the sentences need to be reworked. My undergrad English teachers would cringe.

Most of what Augsburger has to say is supported by Christian scripture (thus 2 stars instead of 1). The problem is, he doesn't have much to say but goes down a wandering, cumbersome road to say it. His discussion on the Anabaptist view of war starts out fine, but it comes up short by failing to ask the challenging questions of a seasoned author. I was disappointed, because I largely agree with the Anabaptists regarding war. It also in my opinion doesn't show adequate sensitivity to those families who have willingly suffered and sacrificed during wartime.

I question Augsburger's premise that extrinsic activity brings about intrinsic transformation. I realize that extrinsic activity and intrinsic transformation form a symbiotic relationship, but Augsburger's preoccupation with activity and his lack of emphasis on personal spiritual disciplines seems backwards (Luke 10:41-42). This, however, is not the reason for "2 stars." Like perhaps many of you, I seek out books that challenge me with differing opinions. I just don't like to read books that are poorly written. There is a reason why classic works endure. This is definitely not a classic.

From the Back Cover
"Dan McCartney has written an informed, scholarly, and evangelical commentary on James that is both readable and informative. It contains fresh perspectives in addition to covering the ground that all solid commentaries need to cover. It will be quite useful to evangelical pastors who want a solid basis for preaching or teaching on James."--Peter H. Davids, professor of biblical theology, St. Stephen's University

"Dan McCartney's commentary on James is a fresh and important contribution to the literature on James. He convincingly argues that faith plays a central role in the letter. McCartney writes lucidly and clearly while ably surveying various interpretations. This work is exegetically rewarding, theologically rooted, and pastorally wise."--Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"McCartney shows firm control of the secondary literature while retaining an independent judgment on the original text itself. His exposition is thorough, clear, and consistently on target; and his extensive additional notes and excursuses are the icing on the cake. This work deserves a warm reception."--Moisés Silva, author of Philippians (BECNT)

Very Helpful Commentary
By Derek Newbery
This book provides a great commentary on the Book of James. The author spends the majority of his time interacting with the text and spends a fair bit of time discussing the Greek text (though knowledge of Greek is not needed to utilize this commentary) but also does a good job of informing the reader of other opinions by both recent and older commentators. McCartney sees the theme of James as that of genuine faith revealing itself in life, which is definitely a helpful grid to keep in mind as one reads through James.

Each of the sections in this book begins with a brief summary of what will be discussed in that section. These introductions provide a helpful synopsis and thus a quick resource to utilize. At nearly 200 pages of actual commentary, this book is thorough which may be seen as a positive or negative depending on the amount of time available for reading.

I would recommend this book to those looking for an in-depth understanding of James though Moo is both more concise and probably more helpful in his Pillar commentary, if only one commentary is desired.

A top Commentary
By Pastor Jim Gray
I like this commentary. It is evangelical and technical in approach, yet clear, concise and reader friendly. He has a helpful and good introduction, hitting on character, authorship, structure and contextual issues. It was to me a highlight of the commentary. McCartney holds to an early date of the book (40's) and that James, the half brother of Jesus is its author. It was written to the Jews of the Diaspora, which contains "God fearers." By holding to an early date he does not see the book as a response or correction to the Apostle Paul. James should be read on his own terms. Paul and James addressed their readers from independent perspectives. One must listen distinctly to each man's own "voice." They appropriated the same Jewish heritage, vocabulary, and stories, but from different vantage points. He has a good excursus on Paul and James to show there was no contradiction. However, do not expect a dispensational argument here, and do not dismiss it because of it. It is worth reading and should be considered. He has good points.

He holds that the key concept is faith, holding that trust and faith are inseparable. Faith and endurance go together, and James presents a strong ethical call and view. Faith is eschatological in that its looks intently on the final goal, the consummation of the kingdom. He also sees James influenced by the wisdom literature, encouraging the readers toward a biblical wisdom in which to live day by day by faith and hope. He has a good excursus on both faith and wisdom as well.

This commentary is one of the top ones available on James. His exegesis is good and balanced. It deserves to be on the shelf of any one who is studying James. While aimed at Pastors and serious students, laymen would find it both useful and understandable.

Biblical Faith Sees The Need For Godly Wisdom
By Jacques Schoeman
Scripture consistently presents God as being "perfect", and the NT writers used the imperative on more than one occasion to amplify that as the telos of our faith. Yet McCartney deliberately keeps in touch with reality: 'There is, of course, no thought of suggesting that anyone in this life ever reaches the goal of perfection and can then stop striving toward it.' p 87, n 9 On the importance of attaining the wisdom that is from above, McCartney proves the necessity of such wisdom itself, against the backdrop of humble dependence: 'The most important thing not to lack is wisdom. Note, however, that this wisdom is not obtained by pursuing suffering, by hard work, or by any such effort; it is acquired by asking. At the very least, the believer needs to ask for it.' pp. 88-9 James' chief aim was to establish and mature faith, not speculative theories, so he paid much attention to the perseverance of the saints. 'Endurance under pressure is a means of growth toward this completeness, a completeness that is, to be sure, eschatologically determined, but already in development in the believer.' pp. 87-8 As to the charismatic notion of being 'most blessed', the Gk 'makarios' allows for no difference in degree for the recipient of God's favor. Trumpeting the clarity of Scripture, McCartney unequivocally states: 'In this case, the meaning is "If someone is a doer, then he is blessed".' p 124 God as Father to the fatherless is thematically enhanced through God being the Father of lights (1:17); being the One who brought us forth by the word of truth (1:18); and settled with "God our Father" who obligates us "to look out for" [Gk: episkeptomai] widows and orphans (1:27).

The members of the community of faith were required to affirm love for one's neighbor as "the royal law according to the Scripture" (2:8). 'Thus, to equate word and law is by no means to limit the word to God's moral demands; rather, it equates law of God with the totality of His saving revelation through Scripture.' p 122 John Calvin argued that for God to be no respecter of persons, "neighbor" must mean all mankind, as God expressly commends to us the most contemptible, even our enemies. The aim of good done by God's children in social justice contexts is 'to reflect His character' (p 129). Compassion impels us to dethrone ourselves from the center of our world, to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, and so to display God's moral character. 'Favoritism...is inconsistent with God's own character.' p 136 Calvin rightly emphasized the first use of the law in "the royal law according to Scripture": 'When...he says that those who had respect of persons were convinced, or reproved by the law, the law is taken according to its proper meaning. For since we are bidden by God's command to embrace all mortals, every one who, with a few exceptions, rejects all the rest, breaks the bond of God, and inverts also His order, and is, therefore, rightly called a transgressor of the law.' Commentary on James 2:9 McCartney reiterates this sentiment: 'Thus, one who keeps the whole law save in one respect is a transgressor.' p 148 He skilfully concludes 2:8-9 that, unlike those who "do well" by keeping the royal law, those who show partiality, transgress it: 'James' use of terms for "doing sin" is instructive. Literally, those who show favoritism "work" [Gk: ergazomai] sin.' Ibid

The book of James speaks to everything that wars for pride of place in our hearts, not least being the pride in our own hearts. McCartney reinforces his message of humble dependence on the source of spiritual enablement: '...the divine Spirit is unavailable to the proud.' p 214 The quality James pursued, a difference so revealed, was resumed in his concern with "meekness" (1:18), asking that works be done "in the meekness of wisdom" (3:13). McCartney shapes the context: '...just as in 2:18, the works are instrumental in showing faith, so here works are the key to showing what kind of wisdom one has.' p 198 McCartney expertly contrasts the triumphalist rhetoric of earthly wisdom which had its entry into the world with the first Adam (p 188), with meekness as a virtue patterned after the Second Adam (p 199). Thus works done in the meekness of wisdom are ethical in nature, "pure" [Gk: hagne] and compatible with heavenly wisdom (3:13; cf. 1:27).

James earlier recounted that Abraham conversed with God which brought about a profound change: the beginning of a covenant relationship, resulting in his being "called God's friend" (2:23). James assigned this covenant relationship even more prominence (4:4). McCartney analyzes a verb with its single occurrence in this form found here, "intend" [against the NIV's 'choose'], determining 'It is the outright intention to be the world's friend that makes a person God's enemy. Those who would be friends with the world thus stand in opposition to Abraham, whose faith made him a friend of God.' p 210 After a technical discussion on whether "spirit" should be capitalized or personalized (4:5), McCartney widens the divine intention, calling us to not be ignorant of God's demand of exclusivity as 'James hints at this when he refers to God causing the Spirit to dwell in us.' p 213

The four excursuses at the end of the commentary are beautiful works designed to facilitate the thoughtful reader to a new appreciation of Holy Scripture. His integration of biblical faith and godly wisdom is noteworthy: 'Just as true faith produces good works, so does true wisdom.' p 285 Those who prefer Luther and Calvin to Moo will especially appreciate his commentary.

Born without her left hip and leg, Michele Perry is no stranger to seeming impossibilities. So when she arrived in war-torn Southern Sudan--with little more than her faith in god's promises--she did what everyone told her was crazy: she opened a home for orphaned children in the middle of guerilla warfare territory and has now become "mama" to over one hundred little lives.

With a deft pen, she recounts unforgettable stories of life in the bush, stories that capture the reader with the stark realities of living in a war zone--and the power of God's love to transform them. Her own story is just as compelling as the ministry she is living. From working in the slums of India to finding her home in war-ravaged Africa, Michele's life has been a journey deeper into the supernatural power of God.

Readers will be swept up in one woman's poignant spellbinding, captivatingly honest journey of love and the glimpses of God's tender grace and mercy in the midst of a broken and hurting world

Review
"Michele Perry's Love Has a Face is an incredible book. Facing her own insurmountable obstacles, Michele was born without her left hip and leg. By the time she was thirteen, she had endured 23 surgeries. In midst of these difficulties, Jesus Himself came to Michele and called her to bring His love to 'the least of these.' Leaving the security of America, Michele has become a one-legged ambassador of love--first to the slums of India and now to the war-torn regions of Southern Sudan. Michele is transforming one of the most dangerous spots on earth, one child at a time, by the loving heart of Jesus. This moving and amazing story will inspire you, too, to be the face of transforming love right where you live. We cannot say enough about Michele and her work. You have to read this book!"
--Wesley and Stacey Campbell, RevivalNOW Ministries; Be A Hero (NGO); board members, Iris Ministries

"Michele Perry's book, Love Has a Face, is the amazing story of her work with the orphans in Sudan amidst a war-torn populace. It is the inspiring, heart-touching, faith-building story of one of God's greats who, instead of becoming bitter over severe birth defects, has been transformed into a modern-day super-hero of the faith. It is not only about the work Michele is doing, but the work one can detect between the lines that God has done and is doing in her, and the importance of the relationship of these two works. I encourage all to read Love Has a Face, for in doing so, we will have a better picture of The Face, His face. Michele is the real thing and has written about one of the most important things on the Lord's heart. I hold Michele and her book in high regard and deep respect."
--Randy Clark, president and founder, Global Awakening; overseer, Apostolic Network of Global Awakening; founder, Global School of Supernatural Ministry

"Perry's tender story may very well change your life. Embrace every word!"
--Beverly Lewis, New York Times bestselling author

Love Really Does Have a Face!
By Emmy P. Cerveny
I was blown away by this book.
Many Christian writers seem to be writing for their own benefit to let the reader know "wow I am really a great Christian!Look at what all I have done!"
Michelle Perry is humility personified! Rarely does she point to herself. She leads us straight to Jesus for us to encounter for ourselves the Mighty Lord she loves and serves.
I can hardly recommend this book more highly ; in fact, I have read it slowly ,as part of my own Daily Quiet Time...I have been enriched and touched in my deepest place. I want everyone I know to have a chance to experience Him in a new way , walking into one of the darkest places on earth with one of His Brightest lights, Michelle Perry.
Read this book, share it with others and rejoice that there are people in this day and time who truly follow the Father's call on their life!!

Living Loved
By Robert Quick
Michele Perry has poured her heart out in this book and has revealed for all those seeking the heart of God how to live in Christ and follow on to know Him. It's a life changing book. I would recommend reading it. Your heart will go out to her and those in the Sudan and anyone who needs the love of God.

Seeing Jesus
By Cynthia Forster
I was so struck by the message of this book that I bought additional copies to give away. But I don't recommend this book for any Christian unwilling to have their comfortable walk with God shaken to the core. If you can read this book and not be convicted on any level by what you have or haven't done to bless Jesus as He has blessed you, then we must be reading different Bibles.

I say that because this author documents her own significant physical disabilities and lack of resources as if they are barely an inconvenience in the scheme of God's will and relies completely on His mercy, grace and love in the middle of a war ravaged, disease infected, famine ridden country to reach out and serve His children. Any excuses the reader may have for surrendering his/herself and resources back to God for His glory should be completely undermined after reading this. The efforts of the author are reflective of Matthew 25:31-46 "I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, naked and you clothed me, sick and you cared for me, a stranger and you welcomed me in, in prison and you visited me..." As Jesus said, "Inasmuch as you have done this for the least of my brethren, you have done it unto me." That settles it for me, what is done for them is done unto Him. I believe Michele Perry sees Jesus every single day in the faces of those she loves and serves.

So after reading this book, be prepared to ask yourself, "In whose face do I see Jesus today?" If an answer doesn't come to mind readily, look for the least of His brethren in need. Love does indeed have a face - it is His.

From Booklist
Much like Julie Fogliano’s And Then It’s Spring (2012), this story is about a boy who discovers the magic of a seed when he plants it in the ground. But first it takes some sun and rain and plenty of waiting . . . and then some more waiting. Little by little, the boy notices buds and tender leaves on a sprouting tree, and a host of insects that make their home in the new growth. As the quiet story cycles through the seasons and the passing years—and the continual waiting—both the boy and tree grow bigger, until the tree is strong enough to hold the boy, and the boy holds one of the tree’s seeds, ready to start the magic again. Although the text is less inventive than Fogliano’s, the magic of this debut picture book rests in MacKay’s diorama-style illustrations. Layered cutouts made from a variety of papers, including semitranslucent Yupo paper, allow soft, warm light to filter through and create luminous, sunlit scenes. Just the right antidote for The Giving Tree. Preschool-Grade 2. --Angela Leeper

Lovely book to keep and treasure
By Parsley
I read this with two boys; they loved the end picture of the boy in the tree with the original boy, now a man. They picture themselves like that one day I think! A good cycle of life to look at and visualise, interesting and lovely drawings and nice animals crop up on each page. Snails, tortoises, etc. I love Elly MacKay's lightbox theatre pictures as they almost glow on the page, bringing real life to each picture. And her illustrations are charming. Funnily enough, the book will be a little like the seed, in that I think the boys will keep the book to read to their own children one day.. At least, that's the intention. I wish we could get more of her work in the UK.

Truly Gorgeous Overview of Tropical Asian Luxe
By Renee Thorpe
This is an excellent look at the best examples of tropical Asian luxury living.
It is not a detailed exploration of regional design elements (look to Bali Style, Thai Style, Tropical Garden Design, et al, for the next degree of depth). It is, however, a rich overview of the best of SEAsian luxury architecture and furnishings.
Every page is simply gorgeous, with photos "bleeding" out past the paper, one trait of a good coffee table or style book. There is little or no image repetition in the coverage of the homes or boutique hotels featured, and each photo is perfectly focused, every composition seen in its best light.
In all the shuffle of Thai grandeur, Balinese earthiness, and Malaysian simplicity, the book might at first glance seem to be presenting a kind of fusion. I think it's fair to say that there is plenty of contemporary blurring of the distinctions between regions, but the reader can also look for regional elements and quickly learn them. Each property is given its own mini-chapter, which helps a lot. And the regional details and sensibilities really come alive when you read the accompanying texts, which are the work of expert style writers.
In fact, the contributors list reads like a who's who of style gurus. There is the clever and quippy Made Wijaya, descriptive Diana Darling, the meticulous William Warren, and details-minded Robert Powell. It's a great read!

Definitely some of the best of Southest Asia...
By Julia A. J
I am a collector of Luca Invernizzi Tettoni's work because ALL of them is a visual feast for the eyes. This talented man has a knack for details and never fails to capture the vivid and glowing nuances that represents the best of Southest Asia's style. Take it from me, living in the same environment, I sometimes take it for granted. This book is more than just a coffee-table piece, to complement the gorgeous photography , the text , written by various specialists, will enlighten you with well researched information on local crafts and traditions. It also shows the transformation that SEA architecture and interior designs have undergone; overall a fascinating mix 'n' match of vernacular designs and contemporary style.

Enchanting and Inspirational
By A Customer
I bought this book just to reminisce about my childhood journeys all-over Asia and to bring inspiration to my "East meets West" Style, as an Interior Designer. Well, after reading the book I was compelled to go an another journey, a well deserved vacation, perhaps... I just came back from 3-month Antique buying trip in Asia. I visited China, Philippines, Hongkong, Thailand, Indonesia,Myanmar, and Singapore. This book will take you to the same places and show you more than what I covered in three months. Tettoni is truly great...! Check out his other books on Asia, and you'll sure save a lot on airfare...!
