Difficult to find a better one volume work of "all things Christian"!
By Spiritual Formation Pastor
We've used this in our church as the basis for a six part class on the foundations of the Christian faith. Schwarz does a fabulous job covering an enormous amount of breadth in a one volume work. Further, it reads in an almost newspaper layout (easy to read). Only complaint is the surprisingly poor (unorthodox) illustrations or examples that Schwarz gives for the Trinity in chapter seven, on "Christian Beliefs" (he basically suggests a form of modalism). But, aside from this, I can't speak highly enough of so useful a one volume reference book to "all things Christian."

An all-around excellent basic reference
By Midwest Book Review
Author John Schwarz applies both his worldly experience, his degree in Christian studies and his years of experience as a teacher at a Christian college and local church to A Handbook of the Christian Faith, a condensed, foundational text that discusses basic scriptures, history, beliefs, and practices that distinguish Christianity from other religions. Briefly touching upon many variants of Christianity from Catholicism to Pentecostalism to Mormonism, A Handbook of the Christian Faith is at heart a didactic and instructional text, enthusiastically recommended to anyone looking for a solid overview of what Christianity is all about. An easy-to-follow, well-researched, neatly presented, and all-around excellent basic reference.

Claudia, Wife of Pontius Pilate: A Novel, by Diana Wallis Taylor

Claudia's life did not start easily. The illegitimate daughter of Julia, reviled and exiled daughter of Caesar Augustus, Claudia spends her childhood in a guarded villa with her mother and grandmother. When Tiberius, who hates Julia, takes the throne, Claudia is wrenched away from her mother to be brought up in the palace in Rome. The young woman is adrift--until she meets Lucius Pontius Pilate and becomes his wife. When Pilate is appointed Prefect of the troublesome territory of Judea, Claudia does what she has always done: she makes the best of it. But unrest is brewing on the outskirts of the Roman Empire, and Claudia will soon find herself and her beloved husband embroiled in controversy and rebellion. Might she find peace and rest in the teaching of the mysterious Jewish Rabbi everyone seems to be talking about?

Readers will be whisked through marbled palaces, dusty marketplaces, and idyllic Italian villas as they follow the unlikely path of a woman who warrants only a passing mention in one of the Gospel accounts. Diana Wallis Taylor combines her impeccable research with her flair for drama and romance to craft a tale worthy of legend.

Wonderful Story
By Autumn
Claudia, Wife of Pontius Pilate is new biblical fiction from Diana Wallis Taylor. Claudia has led a very sheltered life banished to Reggio by her grandfather the emperor of Rome because of the sins of her mother. She is allowed to return to the palace of Rome to be groomed for marriage when Tiberius takes the thrown. She is given in marriage to newly appointed governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. Claudia finds a rare joy in Roman marriages, she deeply loves her husband and he returns that love. Longing to support her husband in his new post as governor seeks to learn all she can about the people and their beliefs. She is not only intrigued as she learns about the Jewish religion, but feels stirrings in her soul as she learns more about a new teacher, Jesus. Being personally impacted by the miracles of Jesus, she becomes a silent follower. Claudia is torn with her new found faith and being obedient to her husband. When Jesus is brought to Pilate to be executed, Claudia is beyond devastated and it will take God's grace for her to forgive her husband.
I absolutely loved this book! Taylor did a great job depicting the time period and weaving a fictional story around the few known facts about the wife of Pilate. The love story between Pontius Pilate and Claudia is both lovely and complicated and you could feel the pressure that his post as governor put on their marriage. Claudia's journey to truth was beautiful to watch. As she turns her back on Roman gods while trying not to offend her husband or jeopardize his position and seeks every opportunity to learn of Jesus and his teaching. This book is a very powerful example of how God can change our lives for the better when we give him control. I could read it again in a heartbeat and know that historical fiction fans will not be disappointed with this book!

Studying the Historical Jesus: A Guide to Sources and Methods, by Darrell L. Bock

Interest in the historical Jesus continues to occupy much of today's discussion of the Bible. The vexing question is how the Jesus presented in the Gospels relates to the Jesus that actually walked this earth.

Studying the Historical Jesus is an introductory guide to how one might go about answering that question by doing historical inquiry into the material found in the Gospels. Darrell Bock introduces the sources of our knowledge about Jesus, both biblical and extra-biblical. He then surveys the history and culture of the world of Jesus. The final chapters introduce some of the methods used to study the Gospels, including historical, redaction, and narrative criticisms.

Bock, a well respected author, provides an informed evangelical alternative to radical projects like the Jesus Seminar. His audience, however, is not limited only to evangelicals. This book, written for college and seminary courses, offers an informed scholarly approach that takes the Gospels seriously as a source of historical information.

Straightforward (yet scholarly) reading on the real Jesus
By A Customer
Darrell Bock does exactly what his book's subtitle promises: "A guide to sources and methods." In the first part, Bock systematically takes a look at the life of Jesus, considering the historical evidence beyond biblical sources; provides a basic chronology to the life of Jesus; and overviews the cultural background of Jesus. The second part provides methods for studying Jesus. This section is a must for students of Christ who have never heard of the different "criticisms" (i.e. source, form, redaction, tradition, etc.). It may sound so "negative," but really these issues need to be understood if one truly hopes to understand the person of Jesus Christ. I especially liked Bock's overview of source criticism and the different possibilities of which gospel came first. It was, I thought, very clear even though the issue is quite complicated. (...)

To Share in the Body: A Theology of Martyrdom for Today's Church, by Craig Hovey

In modern-day America, it is hard for Christians to imagine ever dying for their faith. And yet in To Share in the Body, author Craig Hovey challenges Christians to view martyrdom not as relegated to the past or to remote parts of the world but rather as having profound implications for Christian witness today.

By examining the Gospel of Mark's recurring theme of martyrdom, Hovey argues that martyrdom is a critical aspect of the gospel and therefore crucial to how the church today remembers martyrs and understands Christian discipleship. Written by an up-and-coming theologian, To Share in the Body provides engaging theological reflection that will benefit not only scholars and students of theology but also anyone interested in understanding a biblical view of martyrdom. The book also includes a foreword by Samuel Wells.

From Publishers Weekly
Western Christians may feel safe from being called to die for their faith, but Hovey (adjunct professor at the University of Redlands and Fuller Theological Seminary) explores the Gospel of Mark to find evidence that every church is meant to be a martyr-church. For Hovey, all Christians [should] refuse to relegate the threat of martyrdom to the fringes of history or remote parts of the globe. A martyr-church is one in which members acknowledge the essential opposition of the church to the world and the possibility that they, too, may die in Christian witness. In a dense theological inquiry, Hovey uses the events in Mark to demonstrate that martyrdom is an inextricable feature of the Christian message. Hovey's inaccessible writing doesn't draw on the lived experiences of actual Christians in danger or analyze the differing relations between the church and the principalities and powers around the world. By not engaging nonspecialist readers or considering the real-life contexts of martyrdom, Hovey has probably limited his book's appeal to fellow theologians. (Feb.)

From the Back Cover
"This is the most elegant theological reading of Mark I have encountered in the last twenty years, and a compelling meditation on a subject most first world Christians prefer to avoid. A model for how Christian theology (and practice!) should be grounded in the gospel story."--Ched Myers, author of Binding the Strong Man: A Political Reading of Mark's Story of Jesus

"In taut prose, Hovey unpacks the logic of Mark's Gospel, and helps the church discern what God is doing in history, both in Mark's day and in our own. This book is lean, penetrating, and wise. Every page rewards the reader with fresh insight."--William T. Cavanaugh, DePaul University

"Craig Hovey digs deep into the heart of Mark's truth, and finds a seam on which there are riches of theological, spiritual, and exegetical profundity. Only a scholar on a trajectory of radical discipleship yet at ease with the practical meaning of theological discourse could write such a book."--Samuel Wells, Vicar, St. Martin in the Fields, London

"A profound reflection on Mark's Gospel. These timely and poignant words encourage Christians to think about what it means to be a martyred church. Hovey offers a biblical vision of a non-instrumental martyrdom, which can point, witness, and testify to the truth of Jesus Christ. I recommend this remarkable book to any person interested in what it really means to live and to die in the body of Christ."--C. C. Pecknold, The Catholic University of America

"Truly an extraordinary book. Readers should delight in the sudden insights and revelatory turns of thought that appear on every page."--Robert Jenson, St. Olaf's College

"Costly witness to the truth, seeing things with discernment shaped by the Holy Spirit, and living as Christians alert to the radical call of Jesus Christ: these are matters at the heart of Mark's Gospel and of this gripping, perceptive book. It refreshes faith from its deepest sources."--David Ford, University of Cambridge

"This book does nothing less than to help Christians negotiate a culture determined by the belief we can get out of life alive. Hopefully it will be read widely."--Stanley Hauerwas, author of Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony

In the interest of full disclosure, Dr. Craig Hovey is a personal friend of mine. However, please do read what I have to say.

This is a challenging and thought-provoking book that explores in detail what it means to "take up your cross and follow Jesus." The gospel of Mark, which is used as a starting point, was written for what Dr. Hovey calls the "martyr-church:" a body of believers that sought to proclaim the gospel of Christ in the midst of a world that tried to silence and oppose it. Those who ultimately gave their lives in service of the gospel we call "martyrs." Dr. Hovey readily acknowledges that the threat of martyrdom for those of us who live in the "Christian" West is likely small, but he does not let us off the hook so easily. Instead, his book argues convincingly that "The virtues necessary to be a martyr are no different from the virtues necessary to be a faithful Christian. This means that martyrdom is not a special calling for a select few, but the commitment of every Christian and the responsibility of every church. Even though not every individual Christian will be killed, there is no way to distinguish those who will be killed from those who will not. Even though not every Christian will be remembered as a martyr, every church that locates its identity in the cross is obligated to cultivate the virtues necessary to enable all of its members to die for the cause of Christ. Every Christian is a member of a martyr-church." (pg 60)

Clearly, this book is not an easy read. Though it is a short 150 pages, its message is profound and dense with meaning. Chapter 1 is a reflection on baptism as a means of initiation into a martyr-church. Chapter 2 reflects on the call to follow a living Jesus into a wonderful and terrifying unknown, trusting the "results" to God. Chapter 3 reflects on the transfiguration as recorded in Mark 9. Dr. Hovey shows that the glory revealed in the transfiguration is much different than the glory we would expect and explores the danger of trying to encapsulate and "explain" a mystery such as the transfiguration. Chapter 4 reflects on how we, like the disciples in the garden, misunderstand that the call to follow Jesus into glory is a call to follow into suffering: even the suffering of the cross. Chapter 5 is a reflection on the crucifixion: not an attempt to explain it, but a meditation on the glory and mystery of the cross. Chapter 6 reflects on the ending of the gospel of Mark, including why Mark doesn't let us "see" the risen Christ but leaves us with a cliffhanger in 16:8. The final chapter explores martyrdom and promise, arguing against viewing martyrdom as a means to an end but instead as a gift from God.

This is the best kind of theology book: one that marries piercing intellect with radical faithfulness to challenge the reader into deeper discipleship.

good point but...

The author's main point(s) could have been convincingly summarized in 6 or 7 wel written, succunct paragraphs. WAY too wordy for my taste!

A Thrilling But Sobering Read
By Metzuda
Every sentence in this book seems carefully thought out, and firmly grounded in an obvious love for the Word of God. Mr. Hovey not only speaks of martyrdom as a passing doctrine to be acknowledged, but recognizes the baptism of suffering as one of the core elements of the Christian faith. Throughout the book you will find useful insight into the Gospel according to Mark, well laid out arguments, and a deeply challenging call to martyrdom in the face of apathetic culture: realizing that we are all called to carry the spirit and mantle of martyrdom.

Highly recommended for the layperson as well as ministers wondering how to communicate a very important doctrine.

A Month by the Sea: Encounters in Gaza, by Dervla Murphy, Avi Shlaim

Over the summer of 2011, Dervla Murphy spent a month in the Gaza Strip. She met liberals and Islamists, Hamas and Fatah supporters, rich and poor. Through reported conversations she creates a vivid picture of life in this coastal fragment of self-governing Palestine. Bombed and cut-off from normal contact with the rest of the world, life in Gaza is beset with structural, medical and mental health problems, yet it is also bursting with political engagement and underwritten by an intense enjoyment of family life. During her month by the sea, Dervla develops an acute eye for the way in which isolation has shaped this society. Time and again she meets men who have returned to the Strip as an act of presence. Yet the mosque is often their only daily activity, as difficulties obtaining supplies mean few opportunities for creative work. This acts as a recruiting sergeant for the Islamist Qassam brigades and a pressure cooker for the creation of domestic tyrants. In this situation, Dervla becomes a shameless supporter of women's rights -acting as agony aunt and feminist mentor by turn. The ironies of Western and Israeli attitudes to the Strip are ever present: most notably the championing of democracy yet the refusal to recognize the legitimacy of Hamas; and the way in which violent attempts to eradicate terrorism breathe life into the very monster they aspire to destroy. Even so, there is a still, small note of hope. For underlying the book is Dervla's determination to try to understand how Arab Palestinians and Israeli Jews might forge a solution and ultimately live in peace.

Typically, the ruined landscapes and epic tragedies in Murphy’s latest nonfiction account are reserved for postapocalyptic novels. But in Palestine’s infamous Gaza Strip, Ireland’s beloved octogenarian travel writer exposes harsh truths that are often stranger than fiction. Using a combination of history and her personal experiences, Murphy uncovers the intricate social and political realities of the Gazan people that are often glossed over by headlines. On a series of day-trips that range from the quietly tragic to the abjectly horrifying, she visits extended families living in squalor, sheltering in and around their bombed-out homes and desperately trying to keep a few olive trees alive as a symbol of hope. As children starve, rich patrons at a fine restaurant nearby use precious lemons to clean their hands between courses, and every desk at an oil-funded school needlessly bears its own electric pencil sharpener. Although Murphy’s occasional lead-thick, date-heavy lectures on history aren’t the best introduction to Palestine, the light she sheds on one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises is as moving as it is invaluable. --Adam Morgan

Dervla Murphy succeeds in getting beyond the wall
By Maria Dia
A Month by the Sea is a combination of political history and a detailed personal journey inside the prison that Gaza has been turned into. It is well-written but not literary-for me, it was a page-turner, like the opportunity to spend a long evening with an honest and knowledgeable friend I admire, hearing exactly what her trip was like. I always want to know when people travel what they found out that they did not know before, or could not have learned from reading. Dervla Murphy fulfills that with depth and passion. I hope many people will read this and share her encounters with the people who must live with the full reality in Gaza.

A wonderful book and a look at the situation in the Gaza Strip, not from the political perspective, but from the people on the ground. A great companion book to Joe Sacco's work and a must for anyone interested in or going to Gaza.

POWERFUL BIBLICAL STUDY!
By Moonpie
Fair warning! If you are going to read this book you will have to put your big girl/ big boy pants on! I guarantee you the Holy Spirit is going to convict you! It isn’t a book to be read just once or even twice, but many times and studied along with the scriptures. It isn’t going to give you a quick read it, fix it solution. . It does give you the tools to make a lifelong pursuit of making your words pleasing to God, written, spoken or even listening to others. Be ready to get serious!
I have read many books on the subject of the tongue and this is by far the most thorough and extensive. As soon as you begin reading you will think of someone who is offensive and cruel in their speech. The gossip, the slanderer, the critic, will all pop into your head, probably with people’s names attached. Stop yourself and focus on looking at yourself. After all, by reading this book, you are the only one you can help change.
Words can be a slippery hole of transgression we easily fall into, damaging not only our lives but the lives of others. The sad part is we so easily excuse ourselves, thinking it really isn’t that important, then “corrupt communication” becomes an
unconscious way of life. Mr. Sedler covers so many areas that one rarely thinks to look at. He also helps you view our communication from God’s perspective. At the end of each chapter are questions for self-examination.
This book is well written and easy to read. I like the multitude of scriptures the author uses to guide you, and also the answers he gives to help you apply them. A powerful book!
I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own

Gossip
By Jennine G.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my fair and honest review.

The title of this post caught your attention, didn't it? I'm betting I have people reading this post that don't usually read here just because they were curious about the title. (You're here now, you might as well keep reading.) Let's face it, there's nothing people like better than a juicy piece of gossip or the chance to speak their mind completely. I don't think there's anyone who can say they haven't been the giver or receiver of negative words, gossip being only one example of negative speech.

Enter Stopping Words That Hurt, by Dr. Michael Sedler, publication scheduled for July 1, 2013. In this revised edition of his 2001 book Stop the Runaway Conversation, Sedler discusses negative speech, why we do it, how it sneaks up on us, and the consequences of letting our tongues get the best of us. He even discusses a side we don't generally consider: how negative speech affects listeners. Yes, listening is the same as participating and will effect you just as much. Like any of the self improvement books I read, this one is categorized as Christian; therefore, all points Sedler makes are Biblically backed.

While the book has a big "Ouch" factor (as in, yikes, that's me he's describing), it is most helpful in allowing the reader to realize just how powerful words are. Although gossip is the first form of negative speech that comes to mind, it is not the only form, which the author makes clear as he discusses different problems people struggle with in their speech. So even if you are not a gossip, you can still have a negative speech pattern. Never fear though, Sedler doesn't leave you hanging. The last few chapters discuss how to remedy the problem of negative speech from your life. It's a process and it's expected that we will fall into the cycle of negativity again, but that doesn't mean we can't try to change our patterns.

Personally, this topic is a challenge for me. I don't consider myself an intentional gossip at all, but I call my problem "foot in mouth disease" because I don't always pay attention to what I'm saying, how I'm saying it, and to whom I'm speaking. I am prone to prattle and the more comfortable I am with someone, the worse I get. I made many highlights on my e-version of this book because I plan on revisiting key points in an effort to become a more positive speaking (therefore, life giving) person.

Excellent Stand Against Gossip
By Nathan Albright
[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Chosen Books in exchange for an honest review.]

This is the sort of book that one reads and will immediately think of other people who really need to read this book as well, the sort of people who are always speaking or writing or typing words that hurt, engaging in malicious gossip, making false accusations, and creating, spreading, and giving ear to rumor and hearsay and evil reports and gossip and all other kinds of sinful manner of corrupt communication, all without going to the people and checking the facts and working for restoration of people to the good graces of others as well as the repair of damaged or fractured relationships. Further reflection will convince those fair-minded among ourselves that while there are certainly others who do engage in such practices towards us, that we too are part of the problem far too often and not nearly enough part of the solution.

Given the harsh biblical condemnation of gossip and evil reports and talebearing and related sins and its ubiquity among humanity, this book does a particularly admirable job of translating the often vague and esoteric language of the sin of talebearing to practical examples in everyday life, including examples that all of us are likely to understand all too well, realizing our own frequent complicity in such sins, with the aim of leading us to repent of those sins and to (with the help of God) amend our ways and engage in speaking words that heal rather than cutting words that hurt. If it is not an easy task, it is no less necessary because of the reality of the harm that evil reports, bitterness, resentment, and a lack of honest and loving communication have done in many relationships.

The book takes a descriptive approach, organized in a systematic way, to the many layers and stages of evil which are involved both in the speaking and in the hearing of evil reports. First, after an introduction to the power of the spoken (or written) word, we are cautioned to be alert to the "sales pitch" of those who are spreading evil reports and looking for our sympathy and support with their negative message. We are then reminded of the Christian obligation to control the tongue, spoken of eloquently by the apostle James, and then the importance of our attitude towards others, especially hearing or speaking negative about those who are not present to defend themselves. The author then gives sound reasons as to why we gossip, gives practical advice on why and how we should keep free from the verbal contamination of even listening or reading to evil reports, as well as avoiding the often subtle seduction of such dark arts. Though the author appears unaware of it, his analysis of the spell-like nature of evil reports and the harm that such talebearing has on the attitudes and relationships of others is not far off from the understanding of the Heliand in the spellbinding power of the word. Whether the spells we weave are guided by the Word of God or by the father of lies is up to us to decide.

After this the author discusses the need for us to avoid false alignments by putting us in sympathy with those who speak evil and act with disrespect and contempt for others, as well as a thoughtful (and personal and scriptural) examination of the damage to restoring relations when fear talks instead of love. In fact, I could relate personally to the harm done to relationships and their restoration both by my own fears and by the undeserved fears of others about me, as the experience of the author (minus the happy ending) is almost exactly what happened to me personally with a former coworker and sister in Christ. The use of the story of Joseph here was also particularly poignant. The author then continues his examination by looking at how we should judge the impurity that results from evil reports in how we tend to believe evil reports, mistrust and misjudge the motives of the person about whom we have believed lies, and then withdrawl from that person without confronting our own mistaken presumptions and judgments.

This most excellent and practical book then closes with an exhortation for believers to speak and walk in the truth, and then provides some excellent advice on how we may cleanse ourselves of the damage done through either creating or believing evil reports about others, learn how to replace our speaking words that hurt with words that heal and restore broken relationships and show the grace that we have been given to others, advice on how to restore relationships, and then give some useful advice on how the way that we either respect or disrespect others in the home can greatly poison our families, even after our own particular greivances have been resolved in our hearts and minds (but not yet in our words). After reading this book, any reader who is thoughtful and reflective should recognize many cases where we have been wronged by others in this matter as well as having wronged others as well, with the attitude that we should all behave better in the future as well and set a good example for others that they may do likewise if they are godly people themselves and desire reconciliation and restoration of their own broken relationships.

The aim of this work is not for people to feel bad or guilty about what they have said or done in the past or how their own words and actions have led to the suffering of others, but for there to be a genuine confession of wrongs and a change of our ways so that we behave in a more Christlike fashion in our conversation. Given the nearly universal problem of either giving active or implied consent to the evil reports of others or to creating or spreading them ourselves, none of us (certainly not I) have any room to be harsh or condemnatory about people, but all of us have both hurt and been deeply hurt by the evil reports of others. In light of this universal experience, we therefore ought to be sensitive to follow the directions of Matthew 18 and seek a restoration with those who have caused offense to us, if such a desire for merciful and loving reconciliation is shared by others, without a desire to humiliate or degrade those who have wronged us in fear and confusion. Let us all hope that we may be better models of godly love and communication.

Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear (The Christian Practice of Everyday Life), by Scott Bader-Saye

Through politics, marketing, news programming, and popular culture we are taught to fear, often in ways that profit others. But what does all this fear do to our moral lives as it forms (or deforms) our character and our judgment? Drawing on Christian scripture and tradition, Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear articulates a response to fear that resists an ethic of security in favor of fostering an ethic of risk. The Christian virtues of hospitality, peacefulness, and generosity are presented as the way to defeat the counter-virtues of suspicion, preemption, and control. Pastors, students, and lay people will find this unique book both accessible and intriguing.

EXCERPT

Do not be afraid. We live in a time when this biblical refrain cannot be repeated too often. Both John Paul II in 1978 and his successor, Benedict XVI, in 2005 used these words to begin their papacies. Among all the things the church has to say to the world today, this may be the most important. No one has to be convinced that we live in fearful times, though we are not always sure what we should be afraid of and why. We suspect that our fears make us vulnerable to manipulation, but we find it hard to quell the fear long enough to analyze how it is being produced and directed for the benefit of others.

One reason we are a more fearful culture today, despite the fact that the dangers are not objectively greater than in the past, is because some people have incentives and means to heighten, manipulate, and exploit our fears. Fear is a strong motivator, and so those who want and need to motivate others--politicians, advertisers, media executives, advocacy groups, even the church--turn to fear to bolster their message. I call this the "fear for profit" syndrome, and it is rampant. We have become preoccupied with unlikely dangers that take on the status of imminent threats, producing a culture where fear determines a disproportionate number of our personal and communal decisions. The sense of ever-increasing threats can overwhelm our ability to evaluate and respond proportionately to each new risk, thus we allow fear to overdetermine our actions.

From Publishers Weekly
The latest volume in the Christian Practice of Everyday Life Series (What About Hitler? etc.) explores the tension between Christian ethical imperatives and the anxieties of the post-9/11 world. Bader-Saye, who is an associate professor of theology and religious studies at the University of Scranton, is primarily concerned with the impact that these anxieties are having on the practices of hospitality, peacemaking and generosity. Acknowledging that many of our fears are well grounded, he believes that the best way Christians can reclaim their ethical heritage is by pooling their risk at the local level. He cites Taizé, the ecumenical French monastery, as an example of how pooled risk can counteract typical 21st-century fears and calls the practice of hospitality a "parable of courage in community." Anxiety and despair can also be opposed, he believes, through reclamation of God as providential parent. He writes, "Providence, at its heart, has to do with the conviction that our lives and our world constitute a coherent story, a drama, in which God and humankind, together, drive the story toward its proper conclusion." While some Christian groups may feel a certain obviousness to what he has to say, many, especially the mainline denominations, can learn much from this cogently argued and elegantly written volume. From the Back Cover
Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear is part of The Christian Practice of Everyday Life series, dedicated to theological consideration of the concerns of everyday life. Series editors are David S. Cunningham and William T. Cavanaugh.

"Bader-Saye has written a timely and provocative book concerning Christian resources of faith in a culture besot by fear. He draws upon compelling contemporary cases of such courageous action but shows, with equally compelling articulation, how such courage finally is deeply rooted in God's providence. His book is a bold theological exposition that has immediate and rich pastoral derivatives, all in the interest of an intentional church community acting congruently with its confession of faith."
--Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary

"Could it be that an account of providence is the key if we are to escape the fear that possesses Americans? That is exactly what Bader-Saye argues. He does so by providing an account of providence that does not promise safety but rather something far more important, that is, a way to go on with courage when we are not always able to 'make sense' of what has happened. His ability to help us 'see' our world through film and literature is itself a display of theological intelligence as rare as it is necessary."
--Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School

"Scott Bader-Saye offers us Christian practical wisdom we desperately need. Through insightful examples as well as rich biblical and theological analysis, he beautifully seduces us to trust God and to risk hospitality, peacemaking, and generosity. This is a profoundly hopeful, and hope-filled, book."
--L. Gregory Jones, author of Embodying Forgiveness

"What a marvelously lucid, engaging, and convincing book. Scott Bader-Saye singles out fear as the defining and largely self-imposed burden of our world. He diagnoses it with the aid of the great theologians and illustrates it from popular, personal, and political contexts. Not content with diagnosis, he offers a cure--cogent, compassionate, and Christian. This is an author who thinks with the practical wisdom of Aquinas and writes with an infectious zest. Here is a fresh voice to challenge and transform the anxieties of church and world."
--Sam Wells, author of God's Companions and Improvisation

Forget the fear
By James Work
This is an excellent treatment of how governments, candidates, companies can use fear of things that are very unlikely to occur to further their purposes. Bader-Sayes treatise shows how to evaluate fear and put it in its proper place in the scheme of the Christian Life. Highly recommend this book to persons who fall prey to this fear mongering.

Fear Not
By R. A. Carr
In many ways the Church reflects the culture wherein it resides. For example, much of what passes for Evangelical Christianity in the United States today, is often a reflection of conservative political leanings and not a true following of Jesus. Nowhere is this enculturation more evident than in the way the Church has become ensnared by the culture of fear foisted upon us by the media and politicians.

Scott Bader-Saye explains how fear has so gripped the Church that we no longer feel safe practicing three important virtures; hospitality, peacemaking and generosity. He shows how trusting in providence (defined correctly as God's provision and redemption - that which ultimately gives our lives meaning and purpose) and being in a community where we can speak honestly about our fears, we can become the witness to God's love and care that we are intended to be.

I know of no book more relevant for the life of the Church today.

The story was interesting and fun.
By Melanie
A Simple Song was better than I had expected. Amish Fiction is not a genre I read often, because the blurbs/stories usually don't interest me, but I'm glad I finally read this one.

The story was interesting and fun. I really liked the singing competition aspect to A Simple Song. It reminded me of American Idol, which I think was the point, so it was neat to get a glimpse into what it might be like to be a contestant.

While I had thought A Simple Song was going to be very predictable, I was glad when some things didn't turn out as I had originally expected. I didn't, however, like the ending. I don't think this book is a part of a series, so I felt the ending shouldn't have left certain questions unanswered.

Overall, I enjoyed A Simple Song. Not everything in the story seemed believable to me, but it was still a fun read in spite of that. If you typically enjoy YA and/or Amish novels, you might like A Simple Song. It was a quick, easy read.

My Review:

Kristina Yoder has the voice of an angel and she loves to sing but her strict Amish community forbids singing as vainglory so she must keep a cap on her voice which is difficult for her. They do have Saturday night singings where teens on their rumspringa can tests the waters of the English world without trouble from their parents or community, so Katrina was able to sing to her hearts content.

Her best friend Bekka had been secretly watching a television show called American Star on her computer where people between the ages of 18 and 30 competed to win big sums of money for their singing voices. She knew Katrina could win hands down.

Bekka approaches Kristina about the popular television show but Katrina isn't sure she wants to push her family that far, but then realizes how sick her Dad is and that the money would pay for the surgery he most desperately needs. She prayed about it, thought about it, and talked to her Aunt Alma about it and finally decided that she would do it. Bekka helped her sign up on the computer and before she knew it she was on her way to Cleveland for the first portion of the show.

However, once there she didn't realize that she'd be expected to dress differently, have her hair styled differently, wear make-up and such and had to do some deep soul searching to decide whether she could give up what she truly believed in for a television show.

A Simple Song was a beautifully written story that showed the courage, strength and maturity of one young girl who had a gift to share with the world and found a way to share it without compromising everything else she believed in. Just beautiful!!

I would like to say a big thank-you to Graf-Martin for sending me this copy!

Another great story from Melody Carlson
By Brenda C
I have been a fan of Melody Carlson for years. She does a wonderful job of pulling me into whatever story she is writing, making me understand the characters and whatever they might be going thru.

"A Simple Song" is the story of Katrina Yoder. She has always enjoyed singing, but in her Amish world it is a sin, and therefore it is forbidden.Katrina's friend Bekka has been watching a show called American Star and really thinks that Katrina should try out for the show. For Katrina though the reason to step out into the Englisher world is more complicated than that. Her father needs to have surgery, and "American Star" just might be the way that Katrina could win the money, and since she hasn't been baptized into the church yet, she will go while on her rumspringa. What will her parents and community say? Will they accept her back into the community, and if she wins the money will her parents accept it! Can an Amish girl stay true to her roots while thrust into the Englisher spotlight! Read this page turning story to find out!
I found "A Simple Song," to be a nice, quick read that is filled with interesting characters that are easy to like. I could easily understand Katrina and the choices she made. I thought it was interesting how her grandfather encouraged singing at her grandmother's funeral. The reason that was revealed was touching and allowed me to further understand Katrina's story. I found the behind the scenes descriptions of "American Star" interesting, and while I kind of knew how things might work out it was still fun to see how Melody Carlson would allow things to work out! Overall, this fun little read, is great for teens but also a quick read for adults who enjoy Amish fiction as well.
