What do the cravings actually mean?

Karen Scalf Linamen loves chocolate but she also has issues with binge eating. She also bounces checks, eats entire boxes of Girl Scout cookies and has to deal with ADD and at times clinical depression. Her appeal is that you can relate to her because she is so human. She's been through a painful divorce and is raising teenagers. Her life is filled with struggles and spiritual solutions.

This book is filled with chocolate trivia and quotes. There is also information about how you can gain weight if you don't get enough sleep. There is advice on how to melt chocolate but I'd not recommend a double boiler. That always causes my chocolate to "seize" up. It is much easier to melt chocolate (for when you make your own chocolates) in a crock-pot. I use that method when I make chocolate covered cherries.

While this book does focus a lot on chocolate the real issues seem to be about emotional issues and how we can solve them with God's love. At the end of the book there are letters from women who have real-life struggles with eating too much.

I do think problems with binge eating could be solved if women just didn't buy the sugary fatty foods in the first place! That is what I try to do but I'm human too and sometimes I don't do the right thing.

This book is all about how to do the right thing even when we fail time after time. This book should be encouraging to most women, especially if you love chocolate.

A Great Book for a Book Club or Girl's Get-together

Make some brownies and chocolate pie, and dig in to the food and the discussion questions.

Chocolatherapy is not about emotional binge eating or the excess weight that often comes along with it. The author, Karen Linamen, has battled both of these problems, but early on she reminds the reader that other women's cravings in response to stress include shopping, working out, surfing the net, or cleaning-anything that we do to excess to avoid our real problems.

Throughout the book, Ms. Linamen sprinkles nuggets of truth and encouragement regarding her own experiences with parenting, divorce, friendship, adult ADD, body piercing, and worry. Yes, I said body piercing. This book is written from a Christian perspective, but it is definitely not one of those "perfect-Christian woman" type of books that do not address the reality that many of the women (Christian or not) who read them are facing.

One reviewer thought she was "tricked" into buying it and didn't know it was a Christian book. I am a Christian, and there are some books that I would not recommend to someone who does not have a Christian faith or outlook. This is not one of those. I would recommend this one to anyone, because I don't think that she's preachy. When she mentions her faith, she is simply mentioning it as one of the ways that she found to satisfy that real deep craving.

I really enjoyed Chocolatherapy! Linamen makes the book comically-witty and relatable. This is a good book for women who need guidance or self-assurance in their hectic day to day lives. Linamen also tells some easy ways to avoid the chocolate and junkfood and find a deeper meaning in stressful situations. If searching for an answer, this book will surely help you find out what your craving!

The introduction includes a section on how to use the book as well as a brief discussion of Society and the Victims of Rape. The entries, which are generally a few pages in length, are clear and concise. They answer basic questions that students will have through definitions, statistics, an examination of common myths associated with the subject, and a Q & A. Fact or Fiction? sections clarify some misconceptions (It is okay for my teacher to flirt with me and Unless a weapon is used it isn't really rape), while Teens Speak relates personal experiences or responses to information. Further-reading suggestions conclude most entries. New as separate entries are Rape and Society and Statutory Rape, which were covered in less detail in the earlier edition. The statistics are sourced: most date post-2000 with many from 2006 and later. One interesting example is the chart illustrating unreported rapes that number has changed significantly since the 2005 edition. The additional resources section listing hotlines and help sites is largely untouched. If you already own the first edition and can find the statistics online (most of them come from government sources), you may want to wait for another title. An Enchanting Heroine and Another Winner for GIST!

It's not unusual when reading a novel for the author to create characters you'll fall in love with that you hate to see it end. In this case I am thrilled because not only has Ms. Gist written just that, but she is planning a sequel and one can only hope she writes fast!

Essie Spreckelmeyer has got to be one of the more intriguing and lovable characters I've met this year. In 1894 and reaching the age of 30 years old Essie has made up her mind that the Lord has more important things to do than bring her a husband. So Essie must go out and capture one herself. After studying the pros and cons of all the eligible bachelors in Corsicana, Texas, she's ready to begin her campaign; unfortunately Essie is an original who marches to the beat of a different drummer. Essie rides her bike Peg (short for Pegasus), slides down banisters, and catches snakes. It's not just anybody who is going to appreciate Essie's joy and zest for life but someone very special!

Form the very first pages the reader will find this one hard to set down. Essie is -- in a word - spectacular! She is funny, compassionate, caring, and the more you read of her miss-adventures, the more you will love her! In deciding to find a husband she forges full speed ahead. Essie doesn't let anything slow her down once she's got her target in sight and though she may stumble once or twice her faith is unshakable especially when after making a huge error in judgment she learns not only the true meaning of forgiveness but that the Lord just might have a better future in store for her if she just places her trust in Him. Peppering this story with a plethora of endearing secondary characters, from Essie's Uncle Melvin and the young orphan Harley, to name a few, you'll be totally charmed with some laugh out loud scenarios, and shed tears of compassion as well when life's journey hits a few bumps in the road. I was most impressed with this newer author's previous novels A BRIDE MOST BEGRUDGING and THE MEASURE OF A LADY. But with this latest book positively sparkling with vitality and uplifting entertainment, I can emphatically state Gist has won me over completely. Write fast lady, I can't wait for the promised sequel!

Disappointed... 3.5 stars

Deeanne Gists' first two stand-alone novels were wonderful, and made me regard Gist as one of my favorite authors. I had been anticipating her latest book, "Courting Trouble" for a year, and began reading it the day it hit shelves.

I knew before I began reading this novel that Gist was already writing the sequel, so I understood from the start that it might not end the way I expected. Yet, I was still disappointed with the book as a whole. My problem with the book isn't the ending, and it isn't even the "disgracing" that Essie goes through - those parts of the book are actually authentic and heart-felt, and I applaud Gist for once again writing reality rather than a sugared-up version of it. My issue with the novel... is less tangible than that. I just feel that this character and the world she lives in is less endearing, less intriguing than in Gist's past novels. I didn't feel the hook, the desire to never put the book down. My thoughts didn't wander to the story when I wasn't reading it. It is a good book, it just simply isn't exceptional. And given Gist's track record of writing exceptional Historical Christian Romance, I was thoroughly disappointed with "Courting Trouble" being simply a "good" book.
However, that does not mean that I will not be reading her future works, I still think that Gist is a wonderful author; this novel just isn't my favorite of hers.

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is a very strong female. She helps promote changes in her society for that era. She faces temptations that make her question her morals and then must use faith to make changes in herself. I was highly motivated by this book and loved learning some history as well. She is now one of my favorite authors.

My 3 year old was taking over!

My 3 year old little boy took after me....he is strongheaded and stubborn! And my loving sweet boy turned into taking over the neighborhood literally overnight. I was desperate. And while the headline didn't grab me as possible...I do have a couple of Dr Leman's books and I love his practical, hands on, Christ centered and humorous instruction, so I was hopeful. It really helped a lot, and gave me the oomph to flex my mommy muscles and reassert my position as the authority in his little life - and he listens! You have to get this, with the DVD. This guide really helps you apply each DVD lesson to your own home and life and situation, and has accompanying questions too, lots of them! Get both - there is help and this is it! Copying this to the DVD I bought too for those readers.

What a great help and happy

If you and your spouse come from different back ground - this is a must read. It give you both a base for what is normal (how to handle situations). My wife and I have completely different Ideas of how to communicate with our Children (my wife came from a 40+ year married mother and father with traditional values and I came from multiple divorced parents) which make normal not normal for both and our children at a young age played us against each other. The book has an index "if child does X turn to page Y and do. What a great help and happy, respectful children.

Following his peculiar horse opera, The Copelands, Bowman cranks out a ninth western novel, the story of an uninspired journey down the much-traveled trail of revenge. The year is 1870. Kirb Renfro, having lost his parents in a cabin fire the summer before, marries his childhood sweetheart Ellie and convinces her to pull up stakes in western Tennessee and head for a new life in Texas. Along the trail they meet Gaylord Brownrigg, also on his way to Texas. Brownrigg has inherited a large cattle ranch called the Lazy Bee in Comanche County, reportedly a lawless Gomorrah on the prairie and he offers Kirb a job as a ranch hand. Kirb and Ellie follow the Brownrigg entourage to Comanche, where they find they are able to buy a small ranch of their own while Kirb works at the Lazy Bee for extra cash. Although a rancher and family man, Kirb inexplicably decides he needs to take quick-draw lessons from his saddle pal, the chatty, lightning fast Clay Summer. All his leather-slapping practice pays off, however, when Ellie is raped and murdered by three ne'er-do-wells, and Kirb decides to track down the guilty varmints himself. Some nifty detective work by the local marshal and testimony from an odd character named the Ginseng Man sets Kirb on their trail. This narrative, like Bowman's earlier books, is filled with reams of extraneous detail (he provides the menu for every one of Kirb's meals), unrealistic characters and action scenes that belie the description. The tedium of the journey to Texas in the first half of the novel is barely relieved by the predictable confrontations in the second half.

It was wonderful to see how God could take care of someone so well, even though they had problems in their own lives of their own making. A down side however, is that just as in all biographies the writer has presented Leanne Payne as almost someone to worship.

Having read three books of Leanne's, I decided I wanted to read her autobiography. What a treat. The only other autobiography that has thrilled me as much is Agnes Sanford, Sealed Orders. Agnes is featured in this book of Leanne's. In fact Agnes took note of Leanne after she wrote her first book, Real Presence, and invited Leanne to visit and that account is given. What a a real treat to read and re- read this author. All her books are so rich with truth and insight that one could read them many times and still glean new revelation.

Wonderful Contribution to Feminine Spirituality

I so love this book, and I think anyone interested in women's spirituality or personal development, regardless of religious beliefs, will too. It centers around the major female deities of Hinduism - Durga, Lakshmi, Kali, Parvati, Saraswati, Sita, Dhumavati, Radha, Chinnamasta, Lalita, and Bhuvanehswari (these last few perhaps not so well-known) - and ways of working with them as archetypes or representations of energies within ourselves that can be brought forth. After an introduction to Hindu mythology in general, and her way of working with these goddesses, the author Sally Kempton devotes a chapter to each goddess, each of which follows the same basic format: The mythology of that goddess, and the energies and lessons these stories hold for us, practices for connecting with this energy ourselves, the 'shadow' aspect of each goddess, and then an overview of how that goddess' energy manifests in our world. While this material could get overly abstract or historical, Ms. Kempton keeps it relevant by including personal stories from her own life, and the lives of students and friends.

So for example, Durga represents the female warrior, and thus represents the energy we need to move through obstacles in our lives. The journal and practices outlined in this chapter are designed to help a reader awaken her own innate warrior instincts, and uncover ways she might have repressed this side of herself due to social conditioning or personal history. One of the 'shadow' aspects of Durga is becoming overly combative or angry, and so there are also suggested journalling activities and meditations for facing and working with these tendencies, so that this 'Durga' energy can be better directed and experienced. Lakshmi, goddess of abundance and good fortune is next explored, with the practices in this chapter devoted to helping the reader discover her innate beauty and radiance, and exercises for helping to release blocks to abundance, or to both giving and receiving good fortune. The chapter on Kali helps the reader connect with her deep desire for truth and freedom, and willingness to overturn convention - whether in one's personal life or on a social level - to achieve that. The Parvati chapter focuses on helping us discover our nurturing and devotional side, etc.

I think the strength of this book lies in the fact that you can relate to it on many different levels. You can relate to these goddesses as actual deities, and use the more devotional meditations outlined here as forms of worship added to your spiritual practice. Or you can relate to these goddesses as feminine archetypes, and use the journalling exercises and meditations as methods for recognizing those that are already strong in you, and strengthening those that are not. On still another level, it is a serious spiritual guide, offering many truths of the spiritual journey and particularly of Tantra, one of least understood (or most misunderstood) Eastern pathways. The author has walked the walk, both in her own spiritual journey, and in her teaching, and this shows in the many stories that she shares from her life. In that way, this book offers more than information - it offers a powerful transmission for those open to it.

So whether you are interested in yoga or Hinduism or not, I think you will find much of value in this book. And no, it is not just for women, anyone could work with the goddesses in this way, although most of the stories shared are geared for women readers. A wonderful and unique contribution, making knowledge and practices that might have only been available to a few in the past available to all!

I really love it

I'm still working with the goddess energies. I've made it to Lakshmi Goddess. I love the stories, the meditations, and the contemplations that Sally offers and invites each of us to use.

It is a lucid, well written work. I am probably a quarter of the way through it so far and keep sipping at it like a fine wine. One reason I don't want to rush through from cover to cover is because this is a book to really follow along with closely. I have made powerful insights and discoveries along the way. An important point I wish to make about this book is that it is not gender-biased. My being a man reading this has given me greater appreciation for both sexes, but more importantly, a deeper and expanded felt sense of the intimate divine, as I like to think of it.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to have a light beacon in dark times. You will derive much from this book. It will become your friend while you wade through mysterious and challenging life situations.

A Spiritual Gem

Within the ever widening circle of today's spiritual discourse, no one I know of speaks with lucidity, intelligence and eloquence like Sally Kempton. If you didn't love to meditate before reading her first book, "Meditation For The Love Of It," you will upon completion. Her latest work, "Awakening Shakti," does just that. The book pulses with the same dynamic energy it describes so well. We are introduced to the family of Tantric Goddesses comprising the body of the eternal Feminine Principle. Reaching into the depths of this sacred mythology, Sally engages the varied forces of spiritual and psychological life revealing the elaborate jeweled aspects of the Goddesses and illuminating each in her most fierce and sublime features. As she does so, Sally demystifies the likes of Kali and Saraswati, making them recognizable to each of us in our everyday life.

From the opening pages, Sally's love, respect for and knowledge of these ancient teachings is obvious. But she does not leave the reader dangling from a thread of esoteric knowledge. Again and again, she brings us back to practice. Practices that help us understand these energies, relate to them effectively and deliver us into a direct experience of the Divine Feminine.

"Awakening Shakti" is a must read for women, and men alike, who wish to partake of a great adventurous story into the mythology and vastly inclusive spirituality of the Tantras. Like her first book, this is not simply a good read, but rather a piece of work to study and engage with. Enjoy.

Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is professor of psychology and philosophy at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where she is also resident scholar at the Center for Christian Women in Leadership. She is the author of Gender and Grace.

Claims More than it Proves

Much can be said in praise of Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen's scholarly treatment of C. S. Lewis and the question of gender. She writes persuasively, footnotes massively, and brings as a professor of psychology and philosophy at Eastern University a good bit of scholarship to her study. The book, however, despite the author's best efforts, fails to make its case convincingly. It claims more than proves, asserts more than it confirms.

With painstaking analysis, Van Leeuwen charts Lewis' progress from his Anglo-Irish roots to his eventual scholarly and literary success both at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, where he held posts in Medieval and Renaissance literature. As the author details, Lewis became in the process of his teaching a man of wide reading and varied personal friendships, arguably one of the keenest minds of the twentieth century.

Van Leeuwen adds that in much of his life and in many of his writings, Lewis held to what she calls "sexual essentialism" - a conviction that sexuality and gender were more than the mere physical realities, more than the simple biological dimension of one's life. Rather for Lewis gender reflected something of the nature of the universe itself. This view of Lewis, Van Leeuwen contends, changed over time. She charges that Lewis eventually altered his original position, grew in his appreciation of women, and came to jettison much of his supposed Edwardian misogyny and stuffiness.

That Lewis changed over time, of course, there can be no question. His marriage late in life to the dying Joy Gresham altered his views of sexuality, and some of his later works do carry a more nuanced view of gender. Beyond this, however, there can be very little certainty. There just isn't enough evidence in Lewis' letters and later works to substantiate Van Leeuwen's notion that his perspective evolved markedly.

The author's overreaching contention that Lewis consciously and substantially altered his earlier convictions and eventually adopted some sort of veiled egalitarianism (she doesn't actually say this, but the implication is clear enough) doesn't really fly. The simple truth is that for all of his massive scholarship and extensive writing Lewis never publically repudiated his published views on gender and sexuality. He certainly could have done so had he reached a significantly different position from what he had thought earlier. No, for all his changes, Lewis remained (what we in our contemporary terms would call) more a complementarain than an egalitarian by any stretch of the imagination.

Deering's historical mystery, set in 1930s England, has all the elements of a good story, but they don't sum up to a fresh whole. Andrew Drew Farthering and his friend Nick—son of Farthering Place's intrepid butler, Dennison—team up in Hardy Boys–esque intrigue with their era-appropriate Nancy Drew, Madeline, to uncover the perpetrator of a series of heinous crimes. Blatant clues are showered on the reader like annoying confetti as the rather predictable plot meanders to its obvious conclusion. Lovingly detailed period couture description and cultural references provide some relief from stilted, repetitive dialogue and unlikable characters. When not coming off as utterly patronizing and as a caricature of British gentility, Drew wears his affected mannerisms like a badge of honor. While Madeline has the makings of a sympathetic female lead, she appears simpering and weak. Matters of faith are given lip service before being relegated to the literary cupboard in favor of imagined mysteries, gratuitous murders, and flirting. Rules of Murder is a 1930s murder mystery, and the first in the Drew Farthering Mystery series, by Julianna Deering.

Drew Farthering returns home to his English countryside estate of Farthering Place just in time for one of his mother Constance's weekend bashes.

And his room is occupied by one of the guests.

But ever the stylish gentlemen, he removes the unwanted visitor from his room promptly and at the prodding of his kind stepfather and estranged mother, joins the party.

Things take a turn, however, when a body is found.

A lover of mysteries on the page, Drew finds it a bit more difficult in real life - but enlists the help of his best friend Nick, son of the butler, and as-intelligent-as-she-is-beautiful Madeline, the visiting American niece of his stepfather.

Together they try to piece together the clues to what could have happened on his otherwise peaceful grounds and realize that murder is no game...

I am a huge fan of Agatha Christie. I adore her murder mysteries, which are so intricately crafted and feature such excellent sleuths/detectives! I have nowhere near read them all, but I hope to someday.

Rules of Murder sounded like it was nostalgic to those novels, and there's even a blurb on the front cover (a cover I quite like, actually) that specifically stated that ardent fans of Agatha Christie would be satisfied in this book.

I'm sure that's true... of some.

Personally, I wouldn't go that far.

Rules of Murder had a feisty start with just enough detail to let my imagination go to work on Farthering Place. It had a fun, large estate feel. Quickly the tone was enjoyable and light, but sometimes lacking in weight.

My issues were based a lot in the romance aspect - it really did little for me. And the spiritual aspects, involving Drew's doubts about God, felt out of place and forced. I don't know why so often Christian fiction has to so often have that plotline - I would be happy with the characters simply being Christians without being hit over the head with their affected reawakening. Just didn't seem to fit in to this book at all.

I was also very concerned that I had the "big twist" pinpointed from very early on. Then I thought that my suspicions were confirmed. To be fair, though, there ended up being a lot more to the whodunit, and many more twists that I had no guesses on.

Despite some clunky moments, I felt that Rules of Murder was a good, if not great, mystery novel.

For me however, Agatha Christie this was not.

Great, clean nostalgic mystery

I haven't enjoyed a mystery like this in a long, long time. Part of it is because I love 30's and 40's mysteries, that I love Lord Peter Wimsey, and that I love good, clean storytelling. This story has the flavor of a Lord Peter mystery. The atmosphere of the 30's is wonderfully reproduced by Julianna Deering's excellent writing skills. I found Drew Farthering, the male protagonist, very likable, and Madeline Parker, his counter part, very endearing. The plot was complicated but made sense and came to a satisfying and happy conclusion -- for those who survived. It is after a murder mystery and there were quite a number who died. On the negative side, it was confusing at times, and the number of names was overwhelming. The Christian message was wonderful and made it, for me, that much more satisfying. It was definitely, most definitely, worth the read.

Entertaining, highly readable whodunit

It’s 1931. Young Drew Fartherington and his friend Nick Dennison arrive at Drew’s home in Fartherington St. John to find his mother and stepfather throwing a house party that’s in full swing. He’s incensed to find his own room occupied, and occupied, no less, by David Lincoln, the man rumored to have had an affair with his mother. The only bright spot is the arrival of his stepfather’s American niece, Madeline Parker, whom Drew finds himself immediately drawn to.

Before the weekend is out, David Lincoln is found murdered in the greenhouse, and Drew’s mother has apparently committed suicide. But something seems wrong about both deaths, and Drew begins his own investigation, with the help of Nick and Madeline.

And what Drew finds in “Rules of Murder” by Julianna Deering are secrets buried in the distant past, a different view of his dead father and mother, his understanding of his own life turned upside down, the financial standing of the family firm threatened – and more than a touch of romance.

Published in 2013, “Rules of Murder” is the first of four Drew Fartherington detective novels written by Deering (two more are scheduled for publication). Her detective in an engaging and intelligent young man, the sole offspring of a wealthy family that owns a chemical research and manufacturing company. The family is relatively new landed gentry. Drew’s grandfather helped to found the firm, convinced the local town to change its name, and built a family home specifically constructed with old building materials and in different styles to architecture purposefully to appear old and established.

The author has done her research well. The story has the air of authenticity and the feel of the Golden Age of the murder mystery – the 1920s and 1930s. The police inspector is not so much bumbling as off investigating other leads, so that Drew and his friends occupy center stage in the story.

As the bodies pile up (and they do seem to pile up), Drew gets closer and closer to the truth, despite a plethora of red herrings tossed in his (and our) way. But the story finishes well, and Deering has provided an entertaining, highly readable whodunit.
