Insightful
By Andrew
I would be cautious because of the title. The distinction between `spirituality' `theology' and `psychology' may have been too mingled to bring definition. Particularly to the Evangelical movement true psychology is presented as pop-psychology under the motivation of `how to' initiatives from the pulpit. Undoubtedly the three branches are clearly defined, useful and enriching for the human experience. But is spirituality a human pursuit for the sacred? We have a definite desire (albeit unclear to ourselves) to connect spiritually but should that be through psychology? I became a little confused over the motive of this book if I am to believe the premise that theology and psychology are involved in the transformation of spirituality as defined by our culture. When the expression `model of spirituality' appears it presents a fabricated sense that was not the incarnation of Christ who grew in wisdom, strength, stature and grace before men and God. Is Christ the `model' or the example because I have never met anyone who actually compares to Jesus - including myself. If the premise is a `model' then I am liable to break it, or at least bend it. But If I have an example I am able to be spiritually transformed in my culture along with my African-American, Mexican, and Asian, Native American and Pacific Island friends.

Divided into three sections the material is laid out well for the reader. Part one addresses spirituality through theology. This was the most interesting and inspiring section for me as I enjoy theological discussion and thought. Pneumatology is an interesting aspect of theology as it studies the Holy Spirit. This was refreshing as the point the book makes is transforming spirituality not the gifts of the Holy Spirit, how they operate and who should use them in a church service (someone find me a spew bucket!) Going back to the early church and working forward through history was refreshing instead of starting with today and working our way back. The obvious difference between `then' and `now' is our understanding of `spirit' through the lens of culture. This was drawn out by the emphasis on `knowing' by participating in the knowledge of Jesus. By comparison, I have found certain classes on a graduate level emphasize the ambiguity of `proper practice' than actual experience and participation with the Jesus and his relationship to Father through the Spirit. This class is more about `knowing' as the book describes in this section. I am sure that the justice and wisdom of scripture are not to be found by objectifying spiritual transformation, but as the book explain, by participating with Jesus and his relationship with Father through the Spirit. I found the freedom of scripture to be alarming at first but came to understand that the material was emphasizing the relationship with Jesus and Father through the Spirit again. This was highlighted in sharing in the glory of Jesus. His priestly prayer in John chapter seventeen throws great light on this. The glory he left, the glory he wants to return to, and the glory he wants us to see and share in are the intensification of hope we have. I found myself putting down the material and reading Romans chapter five all over again, not for clarification, but freedom of scripture!

Section two was difficult for me, as already stated at the beginning of this report, as my understanding and definition of psychology is framed through my generation and culture. For instance, how I feel about my mother and sexuality is obscure and weird. But this was my frame of thinking as I understand psychology - very narrow! The pages on human development and personhood helped unblock this naive idea of psychology to see that there is a definite (even hard wired) connection between my personal spiritual transformation and how I am made and fitted together. This was further added to in connection health and spirituality. Well-being does lead to maturity but not by sniffing scented candles, listening to Asian music, and having a Thai lady rub my body with oil! Again I found my own naive and sarcastic frame getting in the way of learning a new definition of psychology and how it is hard wired to spiritual transformation. Health-conductive spirituality was a huge help to gage, measure and quantify what is happening in my own development. I finished this section feeling much better than how I approached the title. Maybe this was transforming in and of itself?

Modeling spiritual transformation made it clear what was first intended by the book (I refer to my argument over `example' or `model'). Doing case studies the book came full circle to help me understand what was happening in me and the material I was reading and how both interacted in me. I have not read too many books that have this kind of effect on me. I am therefore theologically challenged, psychologically defined and a little more transformed spiritually.

I thought the three cases studied in the context of prison, marriage and family were not only unique but commonplace in our culture. I would add that prison is not only a physical incarceration but a spiritual one also. This could have been made a little clearer to me. Marriage is a certain and definite example applicable to almost all adults. The interaction between in my own marriage deeper than the physical and domestic roles has been my own case study since moving from Great Britain to Washington and now to Kansas. The process, challenge, fight, wrestle, development, and depth are quite profound. I am not speaking to the male / female roles and function but to the human condition in participation with a redeeming relation with Jesus and his relationship with Father that Renee and myself understand through the Spirit.

Shallow

I felt the story was really shallow. There was no depth to the characters. We wait forever to find out what happened to Jessie's mother and then it was like the writer was tired of writting and just ended the story. There was nothing joyful about the book. It was all sad, nothing happy about it. The only likeable charcter was Bill (the Cowboy).

I must have read a different book!!!!!
By gr82read
I must have read a different book than other reviewers. I SLOGGED through this book..it was a chore to finish it, but I am not one to review things I don't read to the very end. It dragged, and it was boring. Even staying with it, things never got better, or interesting, or exciting..nothing..it was predictable, and as I said, BORING. As I podded onward, it felt like my feet were stuck in mud inches deep.

From Publishers Weekly
Evangelical theologian and activist Sider gets down to specifics in this book about American social programs, which at points reads like a policy wonk's textbook. But it is not written so much for policy insiders as for the constituency of Evangelicals for Social Action, the organization Sider founded and for which he serves as president. Unlike other social theorists, Sider freely bathes his antipoverty program in biblical language and prophetic imperatives, but unlike many of his fellow evangelicals, he sees the government's role in addressing American poverty as inescapable. Sider's prescriptions do not fit into familiar left-right categories: while he argues for a "living wage," guaranteed government-funded jobs and universal health care, he also urges a national experiment for school vouchers, commends faith-based community service organizations and speaks urgently of personal responsibility and the breakdown of the family. One of the few evangelicals to have sat at table with both the conservative Christian Coalition and the left-leaning Call to Renewal, Sider seems to have learned from, and to genuinely appreciate, the policy goals of both sides. Notably missing from the book is the hard-headed strategy that has made the Christian Coalition so potent. Sider is more prophet than politician but by basing his policy arguments on something more than political expediency, he makes the somewhat tired idea of Christian politics seem plausible, even exciting, again.

From Library Journal
Nationally known as the president of the Philadelphia-based Evangelicals for Social Action, Sider grapples with the socioeconomic data available on the extent and impact of poverty in America from both a liberal and a conservative perspective. Believing that, faithfully interpreted and lived, the Scriptures can provide the vision and motivation needed to reduce poverty dramatically, he spells out a set of proposals for a social policy that works toward that goal. Sider offers broad policy proposals regarding welfare and crime reduction and suggests that societal problems would be best handled by partnerships between governments and philanthropic organizations. Many readers will find his discussion insightful and his proposals for change resonant. From Booklist
Sider says we must do something--again and more--about poverty in the U.S. because the Bible tells us to. With impressive thoroughness, he demonstrates that both Old and New Testaments enjoin believers to help the poor become productive members of society and to use public as well as private resources to do so. He advocates lifting poor people's incomes above the poverty line by increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit, the food stamp program, and the minimum wage; making the dependent care and child tax credits refundable to low-income families; guaranteeing jobs to the able-bodied, long-term unemployed; providing universal health-care coverage; and other remedies that reek of liberalism. But like social conservatives, he insists that government benefices won't work well enough if the soul needs underlying the bad life choices and antisocial behavior of some of the most persistently poor aren't met. As a minister who has long lived and worked in poor Philadelphia neighborhoods, Sider knowledgeably cites instances in which church-connected social services and specific church people have helped in even very desperate circumstances, and he cheers the charitable choice provisions of the 1996 welfare laws, which prevent state governments that contract with nongovernmental service providers from discriminating against religious agencies. In a book amazingly compact for the breadth of its coverage, Sider also takes up educational reform (especially school vouchers), family-support policy, ways that welfare might empower poor people, and more--all from the biblical perspective of evangelical Christianity. A clear front-runner among antipoverty policy tracts. Ray Olson

"Beyond Charity - A Critique of Sider's 'Just Generosity'"
By Jean-Luc Krieg
At the end of the introduction to his new book "JustGenerosity", Sider sets forth the agenda of this book. He writes: "This book seeks to define the problem, sketch a biblical framework, outline a comprehensive holistic vision and then develop ...................." (p. 23) Accordingly, I will structure my critique and reflection of his book in reference to this phrase.
Definition of the Problem: Who the poor are is well described by Sider, including age groups, family-types, education-level of poor and the relation between poverty and race. He sketches well the major factors that cause poverty. I fully agree with him, that structural reasons, as well as behavioral ones, as well as sudden catastrophes all contribute to widespread poverty. Even though structural reasons play a major influence in facilitating wrong moral choices, the latter should yet be ascertained as a cause for poverty. All negation of this point of view tends to take away responsibility from poor people and thus disqualifies them as whole persons. I also appreciated Sider's good assessment that it is basically the wealthy who contribute to political campaigns, which as a result brings people into positions who represent the interests of those few wealthy, rather than the masses'.
Biblical Framework: I fully agree with Sider's analysis and presentation of the biblical material and believe it is compelling in its call to do justice. Love without justice is simply unbiblical, because the Bible is clear that those who follow God are called to live justly and love mercy.
Comprehensive holistic vision: Sider is consistent with the biblical material and with sociology when he brings the role of civic society into the discussion. It confirms the "biblical anthropology" that humans are not mere autonomous individuals, but are interrelated beings. In the same way it acknowledges a holistic view of people, who are neither solely directed by bureaucratic decisions, nor by individual moral choices. Hence, civic society plays a detrimental role in solving the pressing problems, because it is in civic society that people learn the values that make this very society function in a healthy way. Inner moral and spiritual renewal cannot be mandated but is nevertheless crucial if family renewal, for instance, is to come about. Sider displays a balanced view with regards to the role of government and civic institutions and their interaction as well as contribution to each other, which I deem to be the only way in which long-term solutions can be reached. However, Sider presents too few concrete examples of realistic ways, in which civic societies (like inner city churches) can be strengthened, who in turn would raise local leadership and thus strengthen the political power of the poor from within.
Social Analysis: His explanation for the low work-effort of poor people, for instance, as well as his interpretation of how the inability of low-skilled men to earn enough to support a family, feeds into the disintegration of the family as an institution, are convincing. Moreover, he makes clear how family unfriendly government policy (tax-exemptions, etc...) encourages single-parent families. Sider's analysis with respect to the educational system is also compelling. He argues that a good educational system is absolutely necessary in the fight against poverty. In fact, high school dropouts produce high costs in the long run, which, in any case are carried by the taxpayer. Additionally he builds a strong case for the necessity of healthy two-parent families. Most of his bias toward this form of family-life derives, as he says, from Judeo-Christian roots, as well as the statistics who demonstrate, that children from two-parent families are less likely to experience poverty.
Concrete Agenda: In most of the chapters 4-8 Sider develops quite concrete and seemingly good proposals, which could help alleviate poverty. Even though I won't go into details at this point, this is the bulk of the book that needs to be discussed in student circles, among policymakers, in civic societies etc... Yet, throughout Sider's social analysis and enlisting of concrete ideas for implementation, one great question remains: How can partnerships between governmental and faith based programs be established? How could more clergy-government coalitions come to life? How are inner city churches helped to seek the holistic wellbeing of their neighbors, if they themselves lack personnel resources and struggle hard to survive? Sider offers little concrete steps in this respect. He gives some examples, but these seem to be the exception.
Sider makes clear that the political as well as the theological climate has changed, which makes it more favorable for Christians today to getting involved to fighting poverty. And this they must, if they call themselves followers of Jesus Christ. Overall I believe the book has the potential to reach a great number of people, because it presents, deals well with and offers, to some degree at least, practicable solutions to a highly problematic theme of our time. Will it accomplish what Sider has in mind, namely reaching millions of Christians, who in response, will get practically involved in addressing the issues at hand? We hope. We pray.

Fair and Balanced
By John R. Miller
The debate over how best to help the poor seems to be polarized around the logical conclusions of two seemingly opposed assumptions. The conservative assumption is that most people are poor because of the personal choices they make. The liberal assumption is that people are poor because of bad environments and injustice.

The conservative point of view leads to public policies that reward personal initiative while allowing families to suffer the consequences of their bad decisions as a means of discipline.

The liberal point of view initiates policies that redistribute the wealth through entitlements and public projects while attempting to change the environment through the force of law.

The weakness of the liberal position is that it tends to enable poverty rather than eradicate it. The weakness of the conservative position is that it tends to ignore injustices and do nothing to remove the very real barriers to the upward mobility of the poor.

Ronald Sider in his book Just Generosity: A New Vision for Overcoming Poverty in America argues that these are not competing assumptions but complimentary ones. "I have lived and worshiped with he poor far too long to side either with the liberal who quickly dismisses the way personal choices contribute to poverty or with the conservative who ignores the way complicated structural barriers make it difficult for many hardworking people to escape poverty" (p. 35).

Sider's "Twelve Principles of a Just Society" is the foundation for his policy suggestions that make up over half of the book. While one may quibble with the details of the suggestions, on the whole they are a way out of the political rancor that characterizes the current debate.

I highly recommend this book to all. It educates. It makes reasonable suggestions to open the discussion on how best to address these problems. Most of all it is irenic and offered in the spirit of brotherly love as opposed to the power politics that have come to characterize our political discourse.

Do we care?
By P. Hannon
In 1995 the poverty level for a family of four in the United States was $19,806. 37 million people in the US live at or below this level. Ron Sider correctly asserts that it is morally unacceptable for 37 million people to live in poverty in this country while the wealthiest people are gaining a larger percentage of all wealth. In Just Generosity, Sider presents his vision for overcoming poverty in America. And it is a compelling vision.

Sider's vision is distinctive because he acknowledges that poverty is caused by both systemic injustice in society's structures and by poor moral decisions by impoverished individuals. Both must be addressed in order to stop cycles of poverty.

Drawing upon biblical study, Sider presents the goal of an economy of justice: "Every person or family has access to productive resources (land, money, knowledge) so they have the opportunity to earn a generous sufficiency of material necessities and be dignified participating members of their community" (81). Sider deals with a vast array of programs and issues like welfare, minimum wage, tax credits, health care, and education reform, showing how each could be employed in ways that encourage work, empower the poor, and strengthen families.

Sider ends with this troubling question: Do enough Christians really care? This book should be required reading for any that do.

Finding Your Plot in a Plotless World: A Little Direction, by Daniel de Roulet

The world fell apart for author Daniel de Roulet the moment his son was diagnosed with autism. In Finding Your Plot in a Plotless World, de Roulet takes a closer look at those devastating moments in everyone's lives and the journey that follows. What do we do when our sense of God's plan for our lives crumbles around us? How do we find our plots in a seemingly plotless world?

For answers, de Roulet looks to stories--those of our own culture and the Bible. Along the way, de Roulet encourages readers to be authentic as they tell their own stories and leaves them with hope that God reveals himself through our messy lives.

EXCERPT

Let me make something clear: I am convinced that for Christians, even in the darkest night, there is joy in the morning. God does work all things together--however unlikely the parts--for good for those who love him. But the roads of our progress from darkness to light will often be through murky or unpleasant waters, and our discoveries may not be as whole or as resounding as one could hope. But talking about the whole journey--darkness and light--is being honest to the condition of being human, and perhaps we can help others to begin to make the leap between the difficulties of the now and the promises of the not yet. Successful storytellers and teachers tend to meet their audiences where they are--not where they want them to be. There are times for all of us, Christian and non-Christian alike, when the world seems dark and senseless and morning seems far off, and these times are often when God's plot is the most relevant.

And so this book talks about a journey from plotlessness to plot. Its chapters are meant to be guides for both reading God's stories: narratives that I think God uses to reach down into our own experiences and tell us about himself, and our own stories: the words that we use to tell our experiences to each other and, I believe, to God.

From the Back Cover
How do we find meaning when our sense of God's plan for our lives falls apart? Daniel de Roulet found himself asking that question nine years ago when his son was diagnosed with autism.

In Finding Your Plot in a Plotless World, de Roulet takes a closer look at those moments in which we lack direction, feel disconnected, and search for answers--moments when the world seems plotless and we can't find our place. He explores the role that storytelling plays in helping us to recover God's plot for our lives. "There are times for all of us, Christian and non-Christian alike, when the world seems dark and senseless and morning seems far off, and these times are often when God's plot is the most relevant," writes de Roulet. By linking stories from the Bible with our own cultural stories--through fiction, film, poetry, and song--he walks with us on a journey toward purpose and meaning within God's story.

De Roulet's message will resonate with twenty-first-century Christians who live in a postmodern world that connects more closely with story than modernist arguments of faith. This book will help them bridge the divide many have built between spiritual and secular realms to allow biblical stories and our culture's stories to enter into dialogue with one another.

The result is a book that encourages us to be authentic as we tell our stories and leaves us with hope that God reveals himself through our messy lives.

A Book We Need
By Scot McKnight
In 1986 Dan Taylor gave to the evangelical world a gift called The Myth of Certainty, a book that didn't justify doubt so much as let many of us know that we were not alone.

In 2007, twenty years later, Daniel de Roulet has done the same with his Finding Your Plot in a Plotless World, a book published by Baker Academic. What Taylor did for that decade de Roulet does for this generation. But, instead of offering consolation for those with doubt, de Roulet alters the landscape by offering consolation to those who struggle with plotlessness or perhaps even meaninglessness.

Some questions: Do you often run into a sense of plotlessness? Or a sense of "why?" Is your church afraid of those plots in the Bible when God's best folks seemed to have lost their way? What about getting the big picture but struggling with the day-to-day?

Both are English teachers; both have a gifted pen dipped in the inkwell of graceful prose; both are pastoral enough that they don't scandalize. Instead, they offer not some simple answer but the genuine Christian solidity called hope. The hope that sustains a struggle of faith.

In brief, de Roulet suffered from two dizzying experiences: his father died suddenly and tragically and it ripped apart the fabric of his life. Eventually he found his way into a Christian community that offered consolation and instruction; he and his wife Terry both did PhDs (she now has her M.D. as well!). Then the second tragedy struck: his son, Eric, was diagnosed with autism.

What haunts this book is the knowledge that in this world the so-called Christian plot of getting saved and then everything working out just fine wasn't their plot. How do you, de Roulet asks, deal with finding a plot when the world around seems so plotless?

To lead us into his journey, de Roulet explores the theme of struggling to find a plot within plotlessness by dipping in and out of both biblical plots (Jacob is a favorite of mine in this book) and literary plots -- he explores some writers I haven't read but I'm sure many of you have read: Lee Smith, Anne Lamott, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Groundhog Day, Anne Rice, Leif Enger and Babette's Feast.

This just might be the Daniel Taylor of the emerging movement.

I like the insight of this sentence, the kind of observation we find often in this book: "I have had to come to the hard conclusion in my own life that moments when I feel that God's plot has been lost are sometimes moments when I am trying too hard to hold on to my own conception of it" (147).

Ludlow (2nd edition), by David Mason

Language and landscape come alive in this remarkably colorful story of immigrants in southern Colorado. Among them are Greeks, Italians, Mexicans, Scots. Their struggle to survive is personal, yet they are caught up in larger events of American history in the second decade of the twentieth century, leading to the defining moment of the Ludlow Massacre in April 1914. David Mason’s novel also steps back from the story, questioning whether we can know the truth about it, asking us why we want to know. Ultimately, in its charged and headlong verse, enriched by dialect and dream, Ludlow is about how we say the world, how we speak ourselves into being. Its characters, both fictional and historical figures, are intensely alive even as they are lost. Mason proves what the ancients knew—that verse remains a remarkable medium for the telling of the tale.

*Starred Review* One of the most shameful horrors of the long battle for union organizing rights occurred near tiny Ludlow, Colorado. Coal miners struck, and were kicked out of their company-owned homes. They settled in an ad hoc tent community and held out well until April 1914, when Colorado National Guards got nasty. Eighteen tenters were killed, most of them children suffocated in fires set by rampaging guardsmen. Mason fills out the historical record through the perspectives of two actors in its events. Greek immigrant Louis Tikas, a genuine historical figure, is a young union organizer who sticks with the strikers to the end, trying all along to prevent violence on the strikers' part. Fourteen-year-old Luisa Mole is the orphan of a Welsh miner and his Mexican wife. In eight-line, predominantly pentameter stanzas, Mason follows Louis' and Luisa's trajectories, his to death, hers to survival and a subsequent life on society's margins. Periodically, Mason interjects his own memories of learning about Ludlow and his family's tangential connection to it as well as the rage and pity, and the solidarity with the poor and oppressed, that Ludlow still evokes. Review

“Ludlow bowled me over with its dramatic power, kept me reading on, under its spell. This violent chapter in American labor history richly deserves a poem of epic size, and David Mason, outstanding poet and long-time resident of Colorado, is the man to deliver it. Unforgettably, its characters practically step off the page—immigrant hero Louis Tikas, mistreated waif Luisa Mole, and Too Tall MacIntosh, the man who must stoop to work in a mine. Here is a major poem bursting with life, a book with greatness written all over it.”

                                                            -X. J. Kennedy

“A true verse novel (real verse, real novel), David Mason’s Ludlow revisits one of the cruelest, bloodiest chapters in the history of American labor and state and corporate injustice: the Ludlow coal field massacre of 1914, in which eighteen men, women, and children of coal mining families were killed by the Colorado National Guard. Within a driving narrative that never loses momentum, Mason’s deftly drawn characters, both historical and fictional, take on the lineaments of Dorothea Lange’s photographs. With Ludlow, reminiscent in its political and dramatic power of Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle, Mason confirms his reputation as one of America’s finest poets and a master of narrative.”

                                                            -B. H. Fairchild

“Here is a chapter of our lives in cadences that will resonate with anyone who gives them a chance.”

-Ron Charles, Washington Post Book World

“I read it in two sittings, finishing the last 140 pages in about two hours. It actually is a page-turner.”

                                                            -Frank Wilson, Philadelphia Inquirer

“…a compelling story and a sustained act of poetic imagination.”

                                                            -Brighde Mullins, The Dark Horse

“David Mason has succeeded in restoring to poetry some of the territory lost over recent centuries to prose fiction.”

                                                            -Paul Lake, First Things

“Because this is a story more Americans should know and feel, I hope Mason’s book troubles a lot of readers.”

                                                            -Anne Hyde, La Tertulia

“His role in resurrecting the genre is his most distinguished achievement to date, and Ludlow is the peak of that achievement.”

                                                            -Andrew Frisardi, Contemporary Poetry Review

Most people these days are overwhelmed by the busyness of life, and so they often miss the little evidences of God's presence and activity around them. In contrast, Jesus led a full life but never hurried. He took time to notice his surroundings, and he often saw and then pointed out great spiritual truths in the everyday experiences of life. Using Jesus as a model, Bruce Main explores the act of noticing as a means for spiritual growth. Filled with engaging, often poignant stories that illustrate acts of godly virtue, Spotting the Sacred will challenge and encourage readers to go through their day more attuned to God's work in their lives and the lives of others.

Excellent!
By Jason Huber
Of all the books I have read on Christian spirituality, including several by more well known authors, this is the one I have found to be most inspirational and most enjoyable. Rarely have I found books on spirituality that I can't put down. Bruce does and excellent job of crafting his stories in a way that enables them to fit together with the overall message. Each story is carefully selected and is fun to read. The honesty with which he speaks of his own faith and tells stories relating to his own life is wonderful and adds to the richness of the book. Bruce's honesty helps the reader to feel connected as though he is merely one of us, as opposed to many authors who give an air of superiority.

An inspirational piece readers of modern spiritual literature will find thoughtful.
By Midwest Book Review
In today's busy modern world even the most spiritual person is usually too busy to acknowledge signs of God's presence in daily life. Jesus, in contrast, led a full life that was never too busy to observe such - and this is the point and teaching of Spotting the Sacred: Noticing god in the Most Unlikely Places. Case histories and stories accompany discussions of how to slow down and perceive evidences of God in the everyday - even in the slum or in an act of compassion. From experiencing and giving gratitude to the acts of children, SPOTTING THE SACRED blends scriptural references to everyday life experiences in an inspirational piece readers of modern spiritual literature will find thoughtful.

Tahn ( Book #1): A Novel, by L. A. Kelly

In a dark, medieval land, good and evil battle it out. Trapped between his master's evil commands and his persistent conscience that tells him to do otherwise, Tahn Dorn finds himself in a twisting plot that threatens not only his life but also that of the lovely Netta. After kidnapping Netta from the comfort of her home and burning her castle to the ground, Tahn realizes he can't turn her over to Samis, his evil master, as was originally intended. But as Tahn launches a plan to outwit Samis, he realizes he must also face the evils within himself.
Here, compelling characters deal with the real-life struggles of redemption and forgiveness. It's good versus evil in a way you've never experienced before.

A note from the author:
"I knew as I was writing Tahn that the story could not end until certain choices were made. Love or self-guarded preservation? Forgiveness or bitter hate? It is my hope that readers will think about such choices in their own lives. I hope they remember Tahn and see past the surface of the next person they meet. I hope they see a potential hero in every lost and wayward child and pray accordingly. Then Tahn and I will have done our jobs."

From Publishers Weekly
Kelly pens a novel with a medieval setting, writing under her initials to distinguish it from her historical Depression-era inspirational fiction under the name Leisha Kelly (Julia's Hope; Katie's Dream; Emma's Gift). The lovely Lady Netta Trilett is kidnapped by a cold-blooded killer, Tahn Dorn, who slew her husband several years before. This time, however, Dorn is acting out of a somewhat unexplained newfound desire to turn over a new leaf. After Dorn stashes Netta in a cave for her safety, the evil Samis, Dorn's former leader, burns her family's home. Dorn rounds up eight children Samis had tutored in villainy and spirits them away to the cave, where he and Netta care for them and Netta wrestles with forgiving Dorn—and understanding her newfound feelings for him. Kelly develops her story well in the first half, and her characters, especially the children, are sweet and vulnerable. Some light sexual tension and violence mark Kelly's change of genre. The pace slows in the second half, and readers may struggle with the idea of a woman romantically interested in her husband's killer, no matter how much Christians believe in forgiveness. Yet Kelly's tender touch will endear her to those CBA market readers who like their historicals heavily salted with salvation themes. (Jan.)

From Booklist
As Robin Hood might, Tahn Dorn kidnaps Lady Netta Trilett, knowing that the Trilett Castle is about to be overrun with the forces of the evil Baron Trent, who wants no opposition in his campaign to become king. After a lifetime of service to another evil lord, Samis, Tahn's submerged conscience is at last breaking free. He saves the kingdom, saves a host of children Samis is in the process of corrupting, and wins Netta's love. That's the first book, and it's a serviceable adventure, but then Kelly tacks on a second book, which teases out Tahn's torments and attenuates his courtship of Netta, while advancing the story only a little. It's too much of a good thing. John Mort

Great book
By Amazon Customer
This book got my attention from the beginning. I usually read before going to sleep at night, and normally take a week or more to read a book. Tahn was so good that I finished in two days--although without getting enough sleep. :) I enjoyed the whole series. (Since then, I've reread the book a couple times. It's become one of my favorites.)

Couldn't Finish...
By CodyJCrossley
The beginning of this story was absolutely fantastic; I was captivated and submerged into the story. The beginning encompassed both mystery and a great style of writing.

About 30-40% of the way through the book, however, the dialogue becomes rushed, and I felt like I read the same message about God's mercy at least 50 times per chapter. I am an extremely passionate Christian, but the forced dialogue ruined my motivation to continue reading. The characters had great potential to be well-developed, but the author neglected many details which would have made everything more realistic.

It's a shame because it started off so great. You'll become immersed in the story from the beginning, but don't expect it to get any better; you'll more than likely end up disappointed as I did.

Promising story; Poor execution
By Kindle Customer
Honestly, I could barely bring myself to finish this book, but I persevered so that I could write an honest review after I figured out how to explain what exactly is wrong with this thing.

Yeah, there's preaching, & a Christian will recognize the truth in the lesson. The description includes a reference to the Christian theme of forgiveness, so don't go complaining about thinking the story was about anything other than what it is. Unfortunately, the lesson is lost in the lack of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, which forced Kelly to revert to over-the-top preaching which even most Christians would find over-zealous. (Actually, as a Christian, I found myself laughing at a few things...some of the other reviewers do a great job explaining why, so I won't take up any more of your time with that here.)

The characters are shallow, childish, immature...fill in what you will. I just didn't buy it. Really, I wanted to like Lady Netta, but she just annoyed the snot out of me. I couldn't figure out her angle, her motives for doing or saying almost anything. Her thoughts revealed little, & Kelly didn't seem too interested in filling in the blanks. Now Tahn Dorn is an interesting character, & I really would've loved to have seen him less insecure...because, I mean, really, the guy is a studly manly man, no doubt about it. Nothing doing. He blows hot & cold, & again, the main issue for me is that I could not wrap my brain around his motivation for, well, anything. I could speculate about both characters 'til the cows come home, but it isn't the same, & even reaching the tale's conclusion wouldn't have told me if I was right or not. And then, to make it all worse, new characters & perspectives were added more than half-way into the book! I actually stopped reading to whine to my husband.

Now here's the truly disappointing part of it all. The story is GOOD. I mean, the plot is really creative, the characters are appropriate, the setting is attractive, & the goal (or lesson, if you will) is relevant. Kelly had a great idea here, but it was sadly overshadowed by inexperience or lack of skill. I can honestly say I'm disappointed to have to rate this book so poorly, & that is because the story is GOOD. The promise of adventure & romance & sadness & healing & everything that makes a story touch someone's heart...it's all here. It's just bogged down by weak characters with poor dialogue &, well, more weak descriptions.

I guess that kind of sums it up in a word. Weak. 2 stars.
