A Real-Life Field Guide to Doing What Jesus Did

The things Jesus did are not just for Bible times. They are for today. For everyone. Chicagoland pastor Robby Dawkins sees this again and again in his ministry to hurting people and even to gang members. Everyday people are seeing God's power unleashed through simple faith in God's Word; they are healing the sick, routing demons, and making a dynamic impact for the Kingdom of God.

But many other believers are missing out, unaware that they have far more power and authority than they realize.

Dawkins shares dynamic, real-life instruction and amazing stories from the front lines of ministry, showing that believers carry the authority of the Son of God and the power of the Holy Spirit wherever they are. When we walk in the presence and authority of God, we will do what Jesus did.

Good News
By M.J.J.
Despite threats to his life, Robby Dawkins has served the Lord with a contagious boldness. His miracles and challenges to take risks because of Christ's promises are not simply used as a way to protect his family from a world on the attack. He is interested in learning what it means to rely on a God who is more than a good idea. Jesus delivers us Good News in darkness in spite of our feelings and fickle impressions.

Awesome book of hope and inspiration
By Mike
None of us have any idea just how much power and authority God has given us. He has clearly said that his disciples will go out, spread the Gospel, and do miraculous things. The power is in us.....God's Holy Spirit....As Robby says.....Just Do It!!!!!!

The Future of Christian Learning: An Evangelical and Catholic Dialogue, by Mark A. Noll, James Turner

Evangelicals and Roman Catholics have been responsible for the establishment of many colleges and universities in America. Until recently, however, they have taken very different approaches to the subject of education and have viewed one another's traditions with suspicion.

In this volume, Mark Noll and James Turner offer critical but appreciative reassessments of the two traditions. Noll, writing from an evangelical perspective, and Turner, from a Roman Catholic perspective, consider the respective strengths and weaknesses of each approach and what they might learn from the other. The authors then provide brief responses to each other's essays. Thoughtful readers from both traditions will find insightful and challenging ideas regarding the importance of Christian learning and the role of faith in the modern college or university.

EXCERPT
In many respects, the current volume . . . touch[es] upon three issues: intellectual engagement, tradition, and ecumenism. The basic idea behind the project was to bring [together] a leading American evangelical scholar and a leading American Catholic scholar, both familiar with their own tradition, with one another's tradition, and with the general landscape of "Christian learning," understood to mean what goes on at actual institutions of higher education, as well as the broader world of academic scholarship. Once this goal was formulated, two names quickly leaped to mind: Mark Noll and James Turner--scholars whom I have long suspected might be American reincarnations of the (irenic, erudite) Protestant reformer Philipp Melanchthon and the (irenic, erudite) Catholic humanist Desiderius Erasmus. . . .
As planning processes got under way, however, Mark Noll accepted an endowed chair at Notre Dame, bringing his long and distinguished tenure at Wheaton [College] to an end and thereby making among his first tasks in his new post a toe-to-toe encounter with his new colleague and (then-serving) departmental chair, James Turner! Thus our dialogue lost the symbolism of confessionally contrasting institutions, even as we retained the intellectual firepower of the invitees. As readers will discover, those [at the conference] were rewarded with a heady mix of hard-earned erudition, theological commitment, and gracious eloquence--all focused on what I am persuaded are among the more interesting and consequential developments in recent decades: points of (promising) contact and (lingering) conflict between evangelical and Catholic approaches to higher education and scholarship.

From the Back Cover
"This volume is a sign of hope in the changing landscape of Catholic and evangelical relationships. And the dialogue it records is a model for many others that need to take place both in the academy and among the churches--candid, insightful, drawing on the wisdom of the past but looking to the future, marked by respect yet filled with hope."--Timothy George, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University

"A respectful but lively dialogue. The call-and-response format allows Professors Noll and Turner to put their considerable erudition and wisdom to lively and provocative use. They agree on much, but it is their disagreements that make this engaging and enjoyable volume a memorable chapter in a larger, vital conversation about the future of faith-based education."--R. Scott Appleby, University of Notre Dame

"An illuminating dialogue on the nature of Christian education as well as what and how evangelicals and Catholics may learn from each other. The editor, Thomas Albert Howard, provides an outstanding review of the issues at stake and the importance of the Noll-Turner dialogue. The authors suggest a bold and ambitious vision, one that embodies what should be an uncontroversial premise: scholarship and teaching at a Christian institution of higher learning ought to take seriously the philosophical tapestry of ideas, principles, and beliefs on which the Christian faith rests and from which it offers an account of what is good, true, and beautiful."--Francis J. Beckwith, Baylor University

"Two formidable historians give generous and critical evaluations of the roles of Catholicism and Protestantism in American education. Living proof of what Catholics and Protestants can learn from each other, Noll and Turner are both personally and professionally invested in their subject. Their contributions--and Thomas Albert Howard's insightful introductory essay--not only explore, but model, the state of 'Christian learning.'"--Joshua Hochschild, Mount St. Mary's University

The Future of Christian Learning
By Alice Alford
Future of Christian Learning, The: An Evangelical and Catholic Dialogue
I chose this because our study group was using it for discussion. It is somewhat scholarly, not light reading, but contrasts higher education learning in Catholic and Evangelical institutions. I found it very thought provoking, but the discussion with our group (including several professors) made it much more beneficial

The Paradoxical Rationality of Søren Kierkegaard (Indiana Series in the Philosophy of Religion), by Richard McCombs

Richard McCombs presents Søren Kierkegaard as an author who deliberately pretended to be irrational in many of his pseudonymous writings in order to provoke his readers to discover the hidden and paradoxical rationality of faith. Focusing on pseudonymous works by Johannes Climacus, McCombs interprets Kierkegaardian rationality as a striving to become a self consistently unified in all its dimensions: thinking, feeling, willing, acting, and communicating. McCombs argues that Kierkegaard’s strategy of feigning irrationality is sometimes brilliantly instructive, but also partly misguided. This fresh reading of Kierkegaard addresses an essential problem in the philosophy of religion—the relation between faith and reason.

Review

"A strong and original argument that goes against popular understandings of Kierkegaard." ―C. Stephen Evans, Baylor University

"As the title The Paradoxical Rationality of Søren Kierkegaard suggests, Richard McCombs sets out to dispel the... common view that Kierkegaard is an irrationalist, especially when it comes to matters of faith. Much of the book is dedicated to the idea that despite Kierkegaard’s many direct statements against reason, he is actually making an indirect case for how sensible faith in Christ really is." ―International Journal of Philosophiical Studies

I wish I had this book 5 years ago.
By Catherine FRAZER
This is a funny insightful book about the problems all marriages face due to loss of intimacy (or in some cases lack of intimacy). Dr. David Clarke uses "The Song of Solomon" to illustrate how a husband and wife should feel, talk, and act towards each other in a crazy-in-love romance for life. I would buy dozens and hand them out if anyone I knew was still married. I give it a five star rating and hope I get the chance to try it out on a second marriage.

WOW!
By Florida Kindle Devotee
Do you remember how your heart raced when you looked at your spouse when you were dating? The rush of everyday life squealches passion in a marriage. The rush to work, get the kids to school, homework completed, dinner prepared...passion takes a back seat. Dr. Clarke has a very well written book to remind couples not to lose their passion and how to re-gain their passion if they have lost it. Someone states - I don't have time to kiss like that anymore...He responds - so what! Make the time. Your marriage is worth it!

Passion within marriage is something to be nurtured and valued. Dr. Clarke writes from a Biblical perspective, but this book would be beneficial to ANY marriage whether Christian or not.

This Book Changed My Marriage!
By Dana Rongione
After years of marriage, many couples find their relationship at a standstill. In the routine of everyday life, they begin to feel more like roommates than spouses. With jobs to work, errands to run, and kids to raise, who has the time or energy for passion and romance? And so, passion and romance dwindle, and in the process, emotional connections are severed. Is it any wonder then that there are so many divorces in today's society?

In his book, "Kiss Me Like You Mean It: Solomon's Crazy in Love How-To Manual", Dr. David Clarke, an esteemed Christian marriage counselor, deals with passionless marriages in a very blunt, head-on fashion. To be honest, he stomps on a few toes, but I'm here to tell you that his counsel is wise and effective. My husband and I have read through many devotional books for couples. Most of them were okay, but they didn't really make a mark. We read the devotion, said a prayer and then went about our routines, vaguely aware of what we had read. Their messages, while pertinent, were rather shallow. Dr. Clarke's message is not. He digs down deep to uncover the hidden reasons for lack of passion and romance in a marriage. And while I don't agree with everything in the book, I have to admit that our marriage has improved greatly since reading it.

The thing I really liked about the book was that Dr. Clarke went beyond the philosophy of "men and women are different, so deal with it". He explained how we are different and how to better understand one another. He has several chapters dealing with communication and how to get to know each other on a deeper level, even if you've been married for years. One chapter presents a "passion test", that I'm sorry to say my husband and I failed. We were perpetuating our "roommate experience" without even realizing what we were doing.

After following Dr. Clarke's advice, we are now having devotions together daily, as well as communication times (no interruptions allowed). We have also committed to one date night each week, which can consist of staying in and watching a movie, playing putt-putt, window shopping, going to see dramas, etc. It doesn't matter what we do, but that we commit to the evening together. No phones. No computers. No cancellations. It's our night! We've also put into practice our new communication skills and passion principles. It's amazing the difference it has made in our relationship. We feel like newlyweds again!

Allow me to stress again that I don't agree with everything Dr. Clarke says. His book deals mostly with passion and leaves out vital information about building a strong friendship and marital bond. That being said, I still think it is a good book for any married couple to read, whether you've been married for six months or sixty years. There was a lot of valuable information, and unlike many other "spiritual" books, "Kiss Me Like You Mean It" is written in a comical, conversational tone that is sure to have you laughing while you learn.

Messy Faith: Daring to Live by Grace, by A. J. Gregory

While most of us trudge toward the cross with the best intentions, at times our lives just don't pan out the way we've planned. Messy Faith addresses the muddled adventure that we call "working out our salvation." It is being sure and unsure, whole and broken, warring, losing, and winning. It is being right and being wrong and having no clue, but believing anyway. And it is trusting in God to perfect the final product of our flawed, human lives.
Author A. J. Gregory explores her own personal experiences, and those of a handful of flawed biblical heroes and others who have endured painful or simply ordinary realities in the journey to belief. This honest book will comfort anyone who has had a less-than-straight path to belief and those who continue to struggle.

God could never love me like this . . . could he?

We try to be perfect Christians. But we all make mistakes. Temptation. Doubt. Jealousy. Addictions. Unforgiveness. Where is God in all of this?

A. J. Gregory wants to walk beside you on the sometimes chaotic journey of faith. Through soul-stirring stories of her own mistakes and those of flawed men and women in Scripture, you'll discover how the strongest Christians are often broken people, wrestling with the hard questions.

"I don't know how dark your night is," Gregory says. "I just know that your dark places are not pointless. God is right beside you. He has not given up on you. He has not forgotten you. Being broken . . . simply affords us a way to come home."

Raw and thought-provoking, Messy Faith offers no sugar-coated clichés or pat answers. Instead, it offers reassurance for the messy times. You'll be refreshed and encouraged as you begin to grow into a deeper, more authentic faith. Most of all, you'll be reminded of God's perfect love for imperfect people.

Messy Faith is her groundbreaking attempt at finding some equilibrium between spirituality and the realities of life. She is a member of The Life Christian Church, a seeker-friendly congregation located in a suburb of New York City.

She read my mind ...
By L. Siqueido
Since rededicating my life three years ago, things have gone crazy. I am so thankful
for A. J.'s offering of what God has obviously directed her to write.
I swung by a Christian Bookstore in Bakersfield, on my way to Yosemite. I found "Messy Faith" on a sale stand and couldn't resist the title, cover and her opening thoughts. It's hard for me to get hooked in a book. I read a few paragraphs and found
myself pulling over to read a chapter.
What a relief. It seems so simple. She challenges us to be honest in our walk with Christ. When we do, things can get messy. I have been describing the past few years to my friends by saying, it's like God cleaning out my garage. There's so much there, He's deciding what stays and goes. In the meantime, the driveway is full of junk I don't need any more. Thank you, A. J. for writing the book that became my vacation this week. My intention was to do a lot of other things, I spent it with our loving God, letting Him use you to show me some very important things.

Renewing and Refreshing
By Tom Leavitt
During a vacation from an intense job/ministry with the homeless, I desired to read a good book that would be medicine for my weary soul. Messy Faith, was the right medicine, as if prescribed by Jesus to renew and encourage my faith. Not only is A.J. a highly gifted writer but she also has deep penetrating insights (and wit) into our human condition and God's transforming grace. Her authenticity and transparency about her own journey and brokenness (how refreshing), in the context of sound Biblical wisdom, makes Messy Faith a must read for all who truly dare to live by grace - and just maybe (like for me) you might also trust and love Him a little more. I am re- reading the book and look forward to reading more from A.J. Gregory!

Messy and Wonderful
By Carrie A. Dorse
The cross constructed out of duct tape on the front cover of "Messy Faith" is what drew my attention to this book. With disarming and refreshing honesty, A.J. Gregory paints a real life, sometimes gritty, sometimes hilarious journey of faith. Wherever you are in your walk of faith, this book is an incredible guide that essentially explores success and failure along with issues of addiction. Simply put, whenever any person of faith leans on anything other than God first, addiction can take over, lead to sin and away from God. Read this book and then read it again. It's simply wonderful.

Keys to Overcoming the Enemy

Christian, do you suffer from an unbridled temper, overpowering sinful habits, overwhelming sadness, or any number of other spiritually defeating issues? Are you seemingly unable to establish and maintain positive, meaningful relationships with others?

Counselor or Pastor, do you sometimes wonder why you have such limited authority over evil spirits; and why, after evicting them one week, the same spirits show up again the next week?

In Delivering the Captives, Alice Smith draws on her thirty-five years of deliverance ministry around the world to expose some of Satan's "slickest strategies." She explains how he deceives us into building spiritual strongholds in our own lives through willful sin so his demons can operate, develop into strongmen, and access levels of dominion over us. Let Alice show you how to detect and defeat strongmen, and precisely why Jesus said we must bind the strongmen before we dismantle their strongholds and permanently dismiss them.

Here are your guidelines, including Alice's much sought-after list of Apparent Demonic Groupings which reveals how demons work together. Here are your biblical tools, including prayers, proclamations, and pronouncements to renounce evil spirits and remove them from your life and from the lives of others.

The Keys to Freedom
By Constance Jost
The book is the ultimate handbook for deliverance ministry. The keys to identifying and breaking off demonic strongholds are identified clearly. As this life is a battlefield, then this book is a war room strategy guide. This book brought me immense help in identifying how demons work to intimidate and harass people, and how to fight on their behalf. As usual, this author has taken a complex subject and put it into simple, concrete terms. Indispensible reference book for anyone serious about setting others free.

What about Hitler? (The Christian Practice of Everyday Life): Wrestling with Jesus's Call to Nonviolence in an Evil World, by Robert W. Br

Must Christians always turn the other cheek and resist violence? Is it ever justifiable for Christians to retaliate in the face of evil? Philosopher Robert Brimlow struggles with these questions in What about Hitler? The author skillfully integrates meditations on scriptural passages, personal reflections on his own challenges to live nonviolently, and a hard-hitting philosophical examination of pacifism and just-war doctrine.

Both Christian pacifists and defenders of just-war theory will appreciate this book. In addition, What about Hitler? will appeal to those interested in Christian ethics and discipleship, including students, pastors, and laity.

From Publishers Weekly
Those who critique pacifism usually ask one simple question: what about Hitler? Brimlow, an associate professor of philosophy at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., grapples with that question as he reviews the philosophy and implementation of just war theories. The major difficulty, he argues, is that just war theory can be used to justify any war, including the ones against Hitler and Osama bin Laden. To those who argue that pacifism isn't effective in combating evil, Brimlow counters that by secular definitions, Jesus' nonviolence wasn't successful either. Brimlow argues that the Gospels are very clear: what Christians are called to do is to repay evil with good, even when doing so leads to death. A life of prayer and attention to God's presence in everyday life, as well as practicing peacemaking daily, are the spiritual practices that prepare Christians to turn the other cheek, and even die, when the time comes. Brimlow's treatise is carefully argued in academic fashion, even as he admits to personal difficulties living out the gospel as he understands it. The result is a lucid and thoughtful analysis that doesn't gloss over or minimize the outrageous demands of the Gospels. (Oct.)

"With clarity and respect for the best arguments justifying violence, from Augustine and Bonhoeffer to Michael Walzer and Jean Bethke Elshtain, Robert Brimlow responds to the challenges of radical evil. Brimlow provocatively engages the reader on three levels: a philosophical analysis and critique of just war reasoning; meditations on the gospel and Jesus that support willingness to die rather than participating in violence as the 'answer' to Hitler; and the spiritual practices of prayer and daily acts of mercy that habituate persons to being the people of God."--Duane K. Friesen, coeditor of At Peace and Unafraid

"A searching examination of just war and pacifist approaches to war and violence that leads to advice on discipleship. It is a book I would make required reading for a course on the morality of war, even though I don't always agree."--Arthur F. Holmes, editor of War and Christian Ethics

"This is not an easy book to read, which is why Brimlow's book is so important. The hard clarity of his prose witnesses his refusal to report any easy answer to the question posed in the title. As a result, however, he has answered that question in the only honest way it can be answered."--Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School

"This book is an honest examination of the most important challenge to pacifism: Would it not be right to use violence to stop great evil, such as that unleashed on the world by Hitler? Brimlow's honesty in dealing with the commands of Jesus is refreshing, and he does not shrink from confronting the dilemma of being a pacifist in a 'supreme emergency' of demonic evil unleashed on society. His answers are profound in their simplicity and honesty."--Craig A. Carter, author of The Politics of the Cross

"I expected, in this book, to see challenges issued to the just war theory. I was also not surprised to see probing questions--drawn creatively from Bonhoeffer and Orwell--posed to pacifists. However, I was not prepared to be so powerfully challenged by the gospel of Jesus Christ. What a wonderfully challenging book!"--Mark Thiessen Nation, author of John Howard Yoder: Mennonite Patience, Evangelical Witness, Catholic Convictions

Brave Work
By Marty McCarthy
When one reads "What About Hitler?: Jesus's Call to Nonviolence in an Evil World" one is immediately struck by the amount of things going on at one time in this short book. The first thing that is important to note is the sheer honesty of this work. Not a conventional "academic" book, "What About Hitler" is revelatory in nature and takes the form of several "meditations" which usually contain a quotation of a Bible passage, Brimlow's prayer on that Bible verse and an anecdote from Brimlow's life (which are not usually flattering to him). All of this reveals Brimlow's inner struggle with the broader question posed by the book's title, "What About Hitler?"

The question posed by the title is meant to confront the Christian with the ultimate test of the call to nonviolence, namely, nonviolence in the face of ultimate evil - Hitler. On his way to answering to answering this question, Brimlow tackles the doctrine of "just war." In his analysis, Brimlow finds the criteria set forth to justify a "just war" to be too flaccid and easily malleable to justify even the most immoral "unjust" war. Brimlow also finds the theologicial justifications set forth by Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and other theologians as consequentialist which do nothing more than weigh the costs and benefits and advocate an "ends over means" mentality.

Brimlow also addresses Michael Walzer's contribution of the supreme emergency" as a refinement of the "just war" theory. According to Walzer, "supreme emergency" is defined by two criteria: "the imminence of the danger and the second with its nature." For a "supreme emergency" to arise, the danger of the threat must be imminent and the nature of the threat must be "immeasurably awful." If such a supreme emergency arises, moral and philosophical concerns are trumped and man must do whatever is necessary to confront this ultimate evil and the rights of neutrals, innocents and noncombatants can under the right circumstances be overridden. However, in overriding the rights of innocents in the supreme emergency, Walzer asserts, "when we override them we make no claim that they have been diminished, weakened or lost."

Brimlow finds incoherent Walzer's assertion that it can be both right and wrong to kill innocents in the case of a supreme emergency. Brimlow does not do much to rehabilitate Walzer's construction of a "supreme emergency" though one gets the impression by reading the text that Brimlow could easily do so. Indeed, one need only to analogize the "supreme emergency" as a wildfire in order to better understand Walzer's meaning. A wildfire begins in the forest consuming the trees. In order to save the rest of the forest (humanity, civilization, etc.), the firefighters (those responding to the "supreme emergency") create "firebreaks" which consist of chopping down trees to cut the fire off from the rest of the forest. By cutting down the trees (the innocents), the firefighters save the forest.

Brimlow chooses not to rehabilitate Walzer in the way I did above because doing so is inconsequential to his ultimate thesis which is, "we must live faithfully; we must be humble in our faith and truthful in what we say and do; we must repay evil with good; and we must be peacemakers. This may also mean as a result that the evildoers will kill us. Then, we shall also die" (151). Moreover, if a "supreme emergency" arises it is the result of our failure to heed the call to nonviolence; in short (and to modify a line from Billy Joel), we DID start the fire.

There is much that is troubling in this trying work not the least of which begins with the title. If, as the title suggests, we live in an evil world, one is confronted by the probability that evil will continue to triumph over good and one's efforts at living in a way that Brimlow is advocating will likely not have a positive outcome. Brimlow shows that our focus on outcomes is misplaced but in so doing also shows that the call to nonviolence is as much an article of faith as it is an intellectual belief.

Brimlow's work is searching and insightful and is relevant to the events of today. Though it seems like a bitter pill to swallow, there is also a glimmer of hope in what Brimlow has to say. Though I may not necessarily agree with everything that Brimlow writes in "What About Hitler", I hope I am the better for having read it.

Disappointing
By Andrew Chandler
I purchased this book along with 3 other books on the biblical view on war in an attempt to gain understanding on this difficult subject. I selected this book particularly because I had asked the "what about hitler" question in my small group.

The book is very uneven- it shuffles between short meditations on scripture and longer academic chapters that test and break down others thoughts on just war. The meditations did not strengthen the academic chapters as much as I had hoped. Also, much of the book focuses on secular perspectives on war, with very little direct interpretation of scripture.

My biggest issue with the book is that the author seems to start the book with a pacifism perspective and proceeds to defend it by finding the flaws of a just war perspective, instead of starting on neutral ground. By doing this, Brimlow ignores the violence found in the old testament and focuses only on new testament scripture. Though the viewpoint of violence/war cannot be directly carried over into present times, ignoring it can alter your understanding. If Jesus saw the OT as sacred text, then can we ignore OT text on war and still understand Jesus? I think you need to wrestle OT vs NT war before you can wrestle with nonviolence vs just war.

Having said that, all of Brimlow's wrestling ends in an answer that isnt satisfying. This might not be a negative, it could be that the answer to this question just isn't going to be satisfying. The book didn't convince me of that however.

All in all, it was a noble attempt that did not leave any more confident in my understanding of the "hitler dilemna."

A Challenging Call to Non-Violence
By JR. Forasteros
Brimlow offers an honest, insightful and challenging look at Jesus' call to Christian pacifism. He begins each chapter with a prayerful reflection on a difficult passage of scripture, and then with a personal story that highlights a specific theme he then develops in the chapter. Brimlow writes with a transparency and honesty uncommon for many writers handling this topic.

I don't want to ruin too much of this book, but allow me to say that Brimlow tackles Just War theory before moving to terrorism and, of course, World War II and "the Hitler Question". Brimlow challenges our assumptions of what counts as successful and the ways in which we're called to holiness.

All in all, this is a fantastic book. I *highly* recommend it.

GOL! (ovvero quando un numero faceva il giocatore) (Italian Edition), by Diego Trentini

Racconto lungo o romanzo brevilineo.

For Las Vegas widow Naomi, memories of a Pennsylvania Dutch childhood are an ache from the distant past, a painful memory of abandoned roots and lost connections. She has long since reconciled herself to the shattered dreams that had enticed her from her heritage and now simply lives in a tiny apartment, thick with loneliness and regret. Her sole consolation is her daughter-in-law Ruth.

But when hard living claims both of her boys, the two women turn Naomi's creaky Impala eastward in a desperate, last-chance bid for hope and meaning. Thus begins a cross-country odyssey that brings her home to her old farm in Lancaster County--and to the values and rhythms of a life once spurned. Although the East is foreign territory, Ruth also finds a home here among the slow and authentic cadences of Pennsylvania farm country. And she finds love...

i cried.
By Laura Allen
life hits hard, and this story is life at its hardest.
between the death of the two brothers, and the struggles afterwards, i felt like my heart had been ripped out.
i felt like i was Ruth, like i went through everything she did, because this book is written so beautifully, so poignantly.
it grabs you and pulls you into the scene. the descriptions are so perfect you forget you're reading a book and find yourself watching the movie playing in your mind.

i'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone in a heart beat!

oprah: eat your heart out. this should be your next book club nominee.

A Tale for Those on Their Own Tough Road
By George Grenley
Lately I've been reading books about the troubles and travails of others, in part to explore my own, I guess. This book touched me, even tho I'm not a Mom. Read this book - reconnect with your pleasant childhood; pull yourself to a better place. I had a better childhood, then trouble later. I'm getting back to that better place, finally.

Another book in a similar vein is "Kingdom of Simplicity". It's just out. The story revolves around a young Amish boy growing to manhood, and facing the challenge of forgiving himself. Eli, the novel's protagonist, must come to grips with this, and discover what he truly needs to give. It's a Romance, in the truest sense of that term. Emma loves Eli, but he cannot see it, much less accept it, until he can forgive, and learn to love himself in all his human frailty.

I've learned from it. I think others will too. Keep reading all these books - they are wonderful, and also a way to heal.

A huge disappointment
By Tehila
I'm surprised by the positive reviews this book garnered.
Fiction based on the Biblical narrative is a powerful draw for me - especially one based on my namesake. The Book of Ruth is rich and deep; It's about jealousy for God, about a woman who turns her back on the worldly influences she grew up in and became beautiful inside. The climax of the story is that this transformation, mostly internal, attracts an upright, Godly man. The Biblical Ruth is a template of the woman we should strive to be - obedient, teachable, loyal, humble, wooed by God and with a servant's heart. None of these elements (except perhaps loyalty) are part of Tenney's book!
In "The Road Home" Ruth is not drawn to God by Naomi's faith walk, she just likes the "comfort" of Naomi's family life (Naomi doesn't even have a recognizable relationship with God through most of the book). While the journey home in the Biblical narrative takes up about 1 verse, Tenney wastes three quarters of the book on a road-trip that does more to ruin the character of Ruth than redeem her. At the end of it, she is perceived as a worldly-wise, self-protective, hard woman instead of one gentled by the love and protection of God. Boaz, instead of being a Godly man in his community, is the once-Mennonite, now who-knows-what owner of a large flea-market called "The Green Dragon" (a detail that Tenney should have avoided - since dragon is an alternate name for Satan in the Bible and no Godly man would choose to call his establishment by such a name). And there is no attempt to draw parallels between the laws God provided (and Boaz honored) to protect the poor in a Godly community to similar provisions in the Amish community.
This plot had some potential but none of it was realized. It should have been about a heart changed by the Love of God. It could have been about a Godly community that wrestles with an outsider. It might have offered hope to those healing from early sexual abuse (instead this sub-plot seemed thrown in simply for shock value). Why Tenney chose to make it a road trip book about an unredeemed woman is beyond me.
Even the writing lacked excellence.
I recommend you read Francine River's book "Unshaken" if you want an excellent fictional adaptation of the Ruth Story.
