Jamaica Kincaid's At the Bottom of the River... inspired, lyrical short stories

Reading Jamaica Kincaid is to plunge, gently, into another way of seeing both the physical world and its elusive inhabitants. Her voice is, by turns, naively whimsical and biblical in its assurance, and it speaks of what is partially remembered partly divined. The memories often concern a childhood in the Caribbean--family, manners, and landscape--as distilled and transformed by Kincaid's special style and vision.

Kincaid leads her readers to consider, as if for the first time, the powerful ties between mother and child; the beauty and destructiveness of nature; the gulf between the masculine and the feminine; the significance of familiar things--a house, a cup, a pen. Transfiguring our human form and our surroundings--shedding skin, darkening an afternoon, painting a perfect place--these stories tell us something we didn't know, in a way we hadn't expected.

From Publishers Weekly
Kincaid's first collection focuses on a nameless, blossoming Caribbean girl. According to PW , "The voice--incantatory, lyric, rhapsodic--is closer to the condition of poetry and music than to fiction in any of its ordinary registers."

Review
“This book will burn on your shelf. It is too choked with love to incite envy, too humble for admiration, and still too stratling to escape astonishment.” ―Derek Walcott

Love, sadness, and growing up in the Caribbean
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
Jamaica Kincaid's AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER is a study of voice and language that first brought the author recognition beyond the pages of literary journals. These ten stories, all but the last extremely short, are set in an intense Caribbean landscape where a girl comes of age in the shadow of her mother; they are hallucinatory, tense, and indirect, leaving much for the reader to interpret. For example, the first story, "Girl", is a monologue spoken by the mother giving advice ("this is how you set a table for dinner") interspersed with comments degrading the daughter. The two italicized, one-sentence responses from the daughter speak volumes about this complicated relationship. "What I Have Been Doing Lately" is a dream-like narrative that lists what the narrator is (probably not) doing and, in the process, illustrates the emotional state of someone so sad that she just wants to lie in bed. "At the Bottom of the River", the final, longest, and most traditional of the stories, implies the past and future of the narrator through visions seen "at the bottom of the river."
Kincaid's style combines the effect of the simple but perfect word with the lilt of Caribbean rhythms. On the surface, these stories are not difficult to read, but they can be challenging to understand for the reader accustomed to more traditional methods of storytelling. The collection is about as short as a book can get, and so the stories can be read in one sitting, back to back, although their absorption can take much longer.

Breathtaking Lyricism & Abstract Imagery
By SYED-RAFAY AHMED
'At the Bottom of the River' is a lyrical collection of some of Jamaica Kincaid's most provocative writing. Although occasionally confounding in her use of abstract images and construction of abstruse and ethereal narratives, Kincaid's stories nevertheless contain breathtaking lyricism and innovative lines of poetic prose; her words seem to reverberate from the very recesses of metamorphic meaning.

This collection begins innocently enough with one of Kincaid's most impacting writings, Girl. Girl is one of the most severe but accurate depictions of the volatile intensity between mother and daughter. Fueled by a combination of love, fear, and partial loathing, a mother doles out a mantra of life lessons with equal parts concern and venom: "When buying cotton to make yourself a nice blouse, be sure that it doesn't have gum on it, because that way it won't hold up well after a wash. ... Always eat your food in such a way that it won't turn someone else's stomach; on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the (...) you are so bent on becoming." The essays that follow are sinewy with sexual, violent, and spiritual themes.

Kincaid's strength lies in her rage. One senses it above all in her amazing control over words, which, while extremely satisfying on the level of literary technique, also comes across as a refusal to be vulnerable and a reply to anyone who would try to keep her down.

Like a journal, 'At the Bottom of the River' matures in content as it proceeds. Kincaid's prose-poetry initially appears whimsical (she describes some pebbles as "not pebbly enough") and that's the mystique of her writing, how it almost capriciously masks cerebral contemplations on living, dying, and the struggle in-between.

Lovely
By nerdygirl
Kincaid's stories have a distinct voice and accent, which perpetuate the subversion of standard rules prescribed by centres of authority. She appropriates that authority, by indulging in a style of writing which is unique (the two page sentences) and the inversion of punctuation and syntax canons. Her plotless stories describe a state of being which is fractured, which has no beginning or an end, which is struggling to come to terms with its marginalized existence in terms of race, color, gender and economic status. Being an immigrant in USA, the nameless character's struggle for self-definition, identity, and a truncated and oppressed past transfigure powerfully in this collection. The sense of dislocation encountered in her journey to America, the traveling from the Carribean to a new country, a new culture and discourse in which she must chart her own path towards self-discovery, enlightenment out her 'blackness', the assertion of her 'girl'hood, can only be relocated in vague forms 'at the bottom of the river'.
Effectively disruptive, beautiful, introspective and soulful. Read this book if you are colored or an immigrant. Read this book even if your aren't colored or an immigrant. You'll love it.

Fun story with a good message
By Raya
Focusing on the eldest of the Gregory sisters, Lorn Seilstad begins her series with the foreclosure of the Gregory farm, leaving the three orphaned women without a home. Taking care of her sisters like always, Hannah lets go of her dream of becoming a lawyer and turns to employment as a Hello Girl - a switchboard operator. While laws (and upholding them) are something Hannah approves of, following pointless rules has never been her strong suit, and the job of switchboard operator has a lot of them. When her childhood friend is arrested as an arsonist, Hannah is sure he is innocent, so she is forced to turn to a young attorney, the man who delivered the message of their foreclosure, for help. Can Hannah hold onto her job and care for sisters, or will the rules and the two young men angling for her affections drive her crazy?

Clearly the author has put in a lot of research to perfect the setting - both in its time period and place. Descriptions of the Des Moines capitol building sound breathtaking, while the little details of everyday life firmly set it at the turn of the century. It was fun to learn about the Hello Girls, though based on the rigid rules, I would think just about anyone would have a hard time keeping that job! I am sure they were exceedingly efficient, but to be forced to stare straight ahead without ever glancing at the people right next to you, or to be required to ask permission to blow a nose or wipe a forehead? Wow!

Seilstad is good at working messages into her stories, and this one is no exception; in fact, besides the main theme of depending on God and not just on oneself, she works into it a secondary theme - don't give up on your dreams. Sometimes circumstances force one to put them aside for a while, but God has given us dreams, and he finds a way to bring them to fruition. Hannah had long wanted to be a lawyer, but in order to survive, she has to work rather than go to college; yet that dream never dies. Even if it is not in the way she expected, God provides a way for her to use her talents and education. It was encouraging and good reinforcement after just discussing this same theme in bible study!

Sprinkled with a generous dose of humor, the story is a fine balance of drama, danger, and romance. The characters are both fun and flawed, making it a pleasure to follow their stories.

When Love Calls
By Mary A Toffoletto
An enjoyable story that falls into the Christian Romance category, and takes place in the early 1900's. This story has clean romance, mystery, and family drama. A safe and good read for a young reader (10-14 yrs old).

Hello Girls
By Rebecca G. Guinn
When I was first introduced to Lorna Seilstad, it was through her Lake Manawa Series. Each of those books told a story with humor and delight. So when her newest book came out, I had to get it and read it. When Love Calls is just as delightful as Lorna's other books and still Lorna manages to teach a very important lesson through the plot of her book.

Hannah Gregory has quit law school and is trying to raise her sisters after the death of their parents. Lincoln Cole has been dispatched from the lawfirm representing the bank that holds the mortgage on her family's farm to foreclose on the farm. Hannah is forced to move into town and to try to get a job as a telephone operator, or a Hello Girl. The one thing Hannah has trouble with is keeping rules. The one thing that the telephone company insists on is keeping rules. But, Hannah has to try, she has her sisters to think about.

When houses and structures around Des Moines start succumbing to the fires of an arsonist, Hannah's friend Walt is accused of setting the fires. Even though Hannah doesn't like it, she goes to Lincoln to help her win Walt's freedom. Hannah's hardest task is trusting Lincoln. Lincoln's hardest task is trusting God where Hannah is concerned.

While telling this story, Lorna weaves in the inviolate truth of trusting God in all our circumstances. When I can learn while being entertained, it's the best of all worlds. Thank you, Lorna.

Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a telephone call.

Loving Homosexuals as Jesus Would: A Fresh Christian Approach, by Chad W. Thompson

Chances are you know someone who is gay--a coworker, family member, or friend. And chances are, as a Christian, you're not exactly sure how to relate to this person. While the church has been pretty good at "hating the sin," it hasn't really known how to "love the sinner" without fear of condoning a homosexual lifestyle.

Chad Thompson, a man who has struggled with homosexual feelings, argues that "homosexuality needs to be solved through relationships." Drawing from the life and words of Jesus, Thompson gives readers permission to love and befriend homosexuals before they change--and radically, even if they never change--their sexual orientation.

This candid book includes an appendix of additional resources. It will be a valuable tool for pastors, teachers, counselors, and any Christian who knows someone who is gay.

From Booklist
Gays who claim to have changed their sexual orientation get no respect, according to Thompson, who makes this point only at the conclusion of this excellent book of counsel and personal testimony, and then only to urge that they come out about their wish to change just as they came out about being gay. Before then, he parcels out his own story of turning away from homosexuality as he urges Christians to love gays by fighting antigay discrimination, bigotry, and violence, and, most important, by opening the church and their arms to them. He means the latter literally, for he is convinced that lack of nonerotic same-sex physical affection is a major factor in developing homosexuality, and that practice with it--hugging--is crucial to short-circuit and prevent homoeroticism. As the book proceeds, Thompson tells ever more of his own story, and with it much about psychologist Joseph Nicolosi's controversial reparative therapy for homosexuality. Doing so, he clarifies and strengthens his overall message of love without strings even as he defends reparative therapy. Ray Olson

Christians Must Be Proactive and Discerning In How We Relate With And Love Others
By Darrell Martin
First, quick acknowledgement: Try not to judge this book by its cover. The term “homosexual” has pretty much fallen out of favor when used in reference to a person. In addition to being obsolete, it is also offensive to many in the LGBT community. In your interactions and communication, use “LGBT” or “gay” instead. For the purposes of his book (published 10 years ago), the author uses the terms “homosexual” and “LGBT” interchangeably.

This book should have taken me 2 – 3 days to read. I was not expecting a prolonged emotional and mental exercise that lasted much longer. Although I identified with the experiences and memories cited by the author (and the men he quoted), I also found myself having an unrelenting need to face myself at the end of nearly every chapter. Prayerful analysis about who I was, my walk with God, my behavior and my motivation. Questioning the quality of my relationships. And how well did I love others and myself?

I recently had the opportunity to conduct a short online interview with Chad Thompson. His book will help Christians connect with others through radical respect, love and humility.

One of my favorite quotes from the book: “Being forced into the closet is not healthy for those who have chosen to embrace their homosexuality, and it’s not healthy for those of us who have chosen to come out of homosexuality . . . I believe that loving gay people requires us to fight for their right to live outside the closet without consequence, whether or not we agree with homosexuality.” – pages 28, 29

Refreshing Balance On a Hostile, Politicized Subject
By David B. Sable
There are two strong and loud voices surrounding this issue of same-sex attraction. On the far right, there is the voice that cries "you must change!" On the far left, there is the voice that cries "you must not change!" The person in the midst of working through their same sex attraction are then confronted with only these two choices and strong inflexibility from one group or the other depending on how they ultimately choose. Chad's voice is one of sanity. It acknowledges that some people leave behind their same-sex attraction and others don't. While we may have opinions as to what someone else should do, we really have to accept the person even if we choose the path we don't agree with. Whether they seek to embrace the Gay identity or seek to turn away from it, it is their decision and we need to accept them where they are at. Anything else is not loving the person and is political self-serving. Folks who are tied to a political ideology surrounding this issue on one side or the other will probably hate this book because it doesn't give the affirmation of "we are right and the world should think like us." Rather, it teaches us to do just what the title says - allow the homosexual to explore possible options and love and accept them regardless of the path they choose.

A book of hope for both the Ex-Gay Community and the Church.
By Michael Brewer
I found Chad's book on-line, bought it, read it & was deeply impressed both by it & Chad Thompson himself. His book is a guidebook for how Christians as a whole should treat people struggling with homosexuality and how they can offer us hope & healing from homosexuality. If you have a loved one who is Gay or is Gay & wants out of homosexuality I highly recommend this book.

I went so far as to ask friends to donate money so I could order several copies of this book to give away to those who want to help those of us in the Ex-Gay Community find hope & freedom in Christ. I was able to order 14 copies of Chad's book which I blessed a number of friends as well as the pastor and elders of a church I spoke at a few years ago.

Not Her Best Work
By Underdogfan
Though memories of a summer fling are still fresh and painful, Sophie is cautiously optimistic about this school year - after all, she's got a good group of friends and a cool job on the school newspaper. But Sophie's heart may not be the only thing that still remembers the events of last summer. . .

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

As a big fan of Melody Carlson, I was extremely interested in her take on teen pregnancy, so I began this book with high expectations. And I wasn't disappointed. . . at first.

One of Melody Carlson's greatest strengths lies in getting readers to understand and care about her characters, and Anything But Normal is no exception. In Sophie, Carlson creates a likable, "everygirl" sort of protagonist, and her intimate style makes Sophie very easy to relate to. Though I've never been in Sophie's exact circumstances, these circumstances are presented in a way that the reader can instantly sympathize with her fear and confusion. I felt like I was going through home pregnancy tests and morning sickness with her.

Without condoning abortion or presenting it as a viable option, Carlson also believably shows the kind of desperation that would prompt a girl to even consider such a thing - even a girl like Sophie, who had always thought of herself as a good, pro-life Christian. A scene where Sophie travels to the Women's Clinic to "weigh her options" will likely make readers stop and truly *think* about what they would do in her shoes. That's the effect it had on me, at least.

Carlson's compassion for pregnant teenagers shines through on every page. Presenting a wide variety of scenarios that could get a girl into the situation she finds herself in, she compellingly argues that one mistake shouldn't define who these girls are. A great point, however. . .

She also seems to argue that it *should* define who the guys are. Young fathers are offered none of the compassion and grace Carlson extends to young mothers, and I'd go as far as to say the novel thoroughly vilifies them. While the pregnant girls in this book are mostly nice gals who made one wrong choice, every single guy responsible for their pregnancy is presented as a selfish, heartless user who wouldn't know what right and wrong were if they bit him on the leg.

This isn't entirely Carlson's fault. It's a common stereotype, and for good reason - guys in that position who will stand up and at least try to do the right thing are, sadly, in the minority. However, in Carlson's writing, such guys aren't in the minority. They simply don't exist, despite the many different scenarios of teenage pregnancies she presents.

Unlike other reviewers, I didn't think Dylan came across as a terrible person. For the majority of the book, he seemed more like a confused teenager whose hormones had simply gotten the better of him and who had little more idea about what to do now than Sophie did. This, along with their pastor's fair, rational handling of the situation, led me to hope that perhaps *their* situation would bring some much-needed balance to the book's conclusion. However, a last-minute plot twist completely obliterates that possibility and left this reader shaking her head in disbelief.

Sophie, for her part, goes from constantly beating herself up for her mistake to taking practically no responsibility. Neither stance is very desirable, but the book would have us believe that Sophie is right on in her climatic "apology," which winds up amounting to little more than, "I'm sorry I ever met Dylan. I'm sorry I trusted Dylan. I'm sorry Dylan caused me to sin."

Furthermore, the aforementioned powerful scene at the Women's Clinic is marred slightly when Sophie briefly muses over the fact that she can get an abortion without her parent's permission, when at school she can't even take an aspirin without her parents being notified. Though she makes a good point, the way it was integrated into the narrative was jarring - for a moment, I felt like I was reading a pro-life pamphlet rather a novel.

Finally, the last chapter moves way too fast. Sophie deals with her friends' reactions to her pregnancy, rushes to the hospital with contractions, gives birth, and gives her baby up for adoption - all in about twenty-five pages. I honestly don't know if I caught the baby's name before the book abruptly concluded with a final, feeble "Sophie knew she would never be the same after all she'd been through and all she'd learned" or something similar. It doesn't even bother to mention exactly *what* Sophie had learned, because, frankly, it didn't feel like they we were leaving her in a very spiritually healthy place. The empathy I had felt toward her had waned considerably by that point.

There are much worse YA novels out there today, but there are also much better ones, even if you limit yourself to Carlson's works ("Burnt Orange" is highly recommended). Those searching for a Christian perspective on teenage pregnancy would probably be better served by the Nikki Sheridan series by Shirley Brinkerhoff. Though long out of print, you can likely find them at a public library, and they provide a much more detailed, balanced view of the subject.

Great story with real insight into a young person's thoughts.
By Michelle Sutton
This story tackles a tough subject. Anything But Normal is an excellent illustration of how one mistake can shred someone's future plans, or at least alter them in a major way. I really enjoyed this story. As a social worker I've come across similar situations and this story reflects scenarios that some of the teens I have worked with have experienced. Young people have a lapse in judgment one time and their world is jacked up for years to come. It's true with many young women that once they've fallen they don't see the point of trying to stay pure anymore. They feel ruined for life and nothing fixes that. Confessing brings forgiveness but the consequences remain. And often it wasn't something the girl wanted to begin with. It was the guy's idea.

I thought the author did a great job with the guilt she experienced, with her wanting to hide the evidence, her fear of people finding out, etc. And best of all, the author did a great job showing the issues surrounding people who are not showing Christ's love and forgiveness. That was well done. People don't realize how self-righteous they sound when they spout off about things they really don't understand. This story is about compassion and the need for more of it. It's also about not shooting the wounded when they are down. I really understood Sophie and her many issues. I adored Wes. He was such a great guy. And Dylan was pretty much what I expected. Unfortunately his response is all too common in scenarios that I've seen. I loved how the Pastor got involved in the end and how Sophie went to the church for help. That was a great example of how things should work when people are hurting and need support. While the story didn't make me cry like I expected, it definitely touched my heart and I'm sure it will do the same for many young women who need to hear the message.

Good, but not my usual read.
By Carman (ContinuousDelights)
This is the first book that I have read by Melody Carlson and I enjoyed it. I'll try to be a little vague since I don't want to spoil the plot for someone who hasn't read this book yet. There was a certain guy in this book that I was hoping would come to a sudden and painful end. Well, that didn't happen, but I wasn't expecting it to, just hoping. ;) I was a little disappointed with Sophie's final decision, but I can understand why she would do what she did. I really liked how Sophie changed in the book, and befriended people that she probably wouldn't have before. Sorry to be so vague, but I don't want to give anything away! This is a good book and I liked it, but it isn't quite my cup of tea. I tend to like books that get more in-depth with the characters and are a little longer. It is a good book that I'm sure lots of readers will really like.

"Gods of the Mississippi examines how religion moved and adapted along the Mississippi River and its banks from expeditions to its source to living in its delta.... What follows the Introduction are nine excellent essays and an epilogue by Thomas Tweed.... Gods of the Mississippi bucks against an east-to-west story of American religious history and narrates a story from the continent’s interior." ―Religion in American History

"Gods of the Mississippi succeeds on two fronts. It will certainly serve as an essential resource for scholars of religion in the South, not to mention those interested specifically in religion on and along the great river. What is more, this collection now stands as an invaluable example of precisely how scholars can retell religious history in the United States and across the Americas." ―Journal of Southern Religion

Details of lesser known history of the settlement of the Mississippi River Valley
By Leo E. Jilk
I was particularly interested in the unflinching description of the collaboration between government and religious groups in the dismantling of Native government and communities in the region.
Not all of the essays were that strongly written, but as a collection they contribute a great deal to our understanding of numerous aspects of the cultural, racial and religious history of the Mississippi River Valley

In this 2nd book of The Alaskan Quest, the story is centered around Leah and Trace. A surprise is in store when Trace is hunted down for murder. Thrilling, yet a heartwarming story unfolds that teaches the ways of the Alaskan natives and their means of survival while living in a very small village. After this book, you have to go on the next and last. You'll never think of Alaska in the same way befor these books. We know of the settlement of the USA but Alaska can only be for the very strong.

The Next Reformation: Why Evangelicals Must Embrace Postmodernity, by Carl Raschke

Can evangelical Christianity be postmodern? In The Next Reformation, Carl Raschke describes the impact of postmodernism on evangelical thought and argues that the two ideologies are not mutually exclusive. Instead, Christians must learn to worship and minister within the framework of postmodernism or risk becoming irrelevant. In this significant and timely discussion, Raschke demonstrates how to reconcile postmodernism with Christian faith.

This book will appeal to readers interested in the relationship between postmodernism and Christian faith as well as church leaders and pastors wrestling with the practical implications of cultural changes for worship and ministry.

Review
"Raschke offers a broad overview of the postmodern situation and addresses particular concerns as they relate to the changing context, including ministry and worship in the church. The fact that such proposals come from an acknowledged authority on postmodern thought will make the book attractive to both students and pastors."

About the Author
Carl Raschke (Ph.D., Harvard University) is professor and chair of the department of religious studies at the University of Denver. He is senior editor of the Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory and the author of numerous books and hundreds of articles. Raschke is also an adjunct faculty member at Mars Hill Graduate School (Seattle) and has been actively involved in recent years with various emergent church networks and post modern ministry initiatives around the country.

Interesting, But...
By N. G. Gatzke
I too, like many other reviewers, am an avid reader of postmodern literature. I was looking forward to this book finally being the academic work to convince Evangelicals to Embrace Postmodernism, as subtitle says. Furthermore I was fascinating to see how this member of the academy would substantiate some of the claims and practices of the Emerging Church movement.

Raschke's explanation of the philosophical foundations of western thought and therefore Evangelicalism was insightful. His references to some key philosophers in Europe and America and the relation of their thought to eachother was superb. However, in the end of the day, His argument did not convince that Evangelicals should embrace postmodernism for two primary reasons. First, His reductionsitic outlook of Evangelical Christianity in western culture is an inaccurate portrait of the Evangelical Church. He tends to lump all evenagelicals in the same right wing, condemning, propositional focussd camp. But this is not the case in reality. Second, his attempt to use Luther and the other major Reformers of the Prostestant Reformation does not do justice to the context those reformers were in. As one who has studied Luther extensively, I simply do not see all his points about the Refomers view of Scripture and therefore the conclusions he draws seem to be a stretch. He fails to use the reformers to substantiate his case.

This book is interesting but I encourage you to read it critically, just as Raschke has read modern culture and Evangelicalism.

Raschke's Case for a New Reformation
By Trevin Wax
Carl Raschke's book attempts to accomplish three main purposes. First, he seeks to set the record straight for evangelicals by offering an accurate portrayal of postmodern thinking and countering the misrepresentations of postmodernism he finds in the writings of those critical of the new philosophy.

Raschke argues that postmodernism does not necessarily entail a denial of absolute and objective truth. Rather, postmodern philosophers merely question human ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood.

What postmodernism denies is the correspondence theory of truth - a view that perceives truth as something "out there." Instead, postmodern thinkers call attention to the "finite boundaries of human knowledge and meaning," a move which sets God free to communicate truth to us in his own way.

At its very core, postmodernism is a theology of language. God's word to us is not logical or propositional. It is vocative. It is the language of relationship. "We are not reading a thing, but a Person."

In focusing upon the revelation of God to human beings in finite language, postmodernism endeavors to "go beyond the identification of God with Being; it has positioned itself to transcend the metaphysical, or rationalist conception of God."

Turning the Tables

Raschke's second purpose in writing The Next Reformation is to turn the tables on the critics who believe postmodern theology is misguided. He seeks to accomplish this task by exposing an "unholy alliance" between evangelical Christianity and Enlightenment thinking that has existed since the seventeenth century.

According to Raschke, evangelicals mistakenly embraced Cartesian rationalism and moved away from the insights of the Reformers, especially sola fide and sola scriptura, and therefore went back toward the kind of rationalism that the Reformers had rightly sought to expunge from Catholic doctrine just one hundred years earlier.

Raschke believes that today's evangelicalism is steeped in modernism, an idolatrous system of thought that puts a premium on the ability of the individual to use reason to discover truth. Therefore, fundamentalism and liberalism wind up being two sides of the same coin. Both movements seek to ground faith in reason, a disastrous idea that "empties faith of its content" and transforms it into moral imperatives and propositions.

Raschke believes the mystery of God cannot be explained in propositional argument and empirical confirmation. "Language from the Creator's vantage point is not propositional at all. It is intersubjective. It is relational!"

Arguing for a personal God, Raschke challenges the "unholy alliance" made with Enlightenment philosophy. "The God of the philosophers is logical. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is relational."

One may ask how evangelicalism has been so successful if it has been improperly aligned with modernism. Raschke argues that conservative Christianity has succeeded in America because of its emphasis on preaching and conversion, not on its reasoning from absolute, biblical principles.

Returning to the spirit of the Reformation will lead to an embrace of postmodernism. A new reformation will bring about radical humility in our thought, not just in our lives, which means that metaphysical disputation must give way to the cross, gospel, and grace.

Postmodernism as Opportunity

Raschke's third purpose is to call evangelicals to see the postmodern turn in Western thought as an opportunity for true Christianity to flourish once again.

Embracing postmodernism means we must reject the correspondence theory of truth because "it cannot under any circumstances count on the temporal exactitude of correspondence between an assertion and its verification."

Our attempts to find a firm foundation other than faith are futile. "Theology ends where faith begins." Only faith is prior to presuppositions. To look for ultimate security in anything other than our faith in the Lord (including ontological or scientific foundations) is to pursue an idol.

Raschke calls evangelicals to abandon the idea of Christianity as a philosophy and to embrace its identity as a "relationship" - one that connects us to the everlasting God whose limitlessness exposes more and more our own limitations.

Relational Faith
By smidgen
In this important book Carl Raschke aims to do the following: 1) demonstrate that many of the authors who have been captured under the broad umbrella of postmodernism have all too often been dismissed unfairly and that the church would do well to give them a fair hearing. The most substantive argument in this regard is probably the debate over the correspondence theory of truth; 2) disabuse the church of the merits of the Enlightenment project and of modernism. One of the most important moves here is Raschke's argument that "The God of the philosophers is logical. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is relational;" And, 3) to call the church to adopt a primarily relational rather than a logical view of faith, which, If I am understanding Raschke correctly, does not mean "anything goes," but that we must develop a greater appreciation for the limits of rationality and the merits of faith.

On balance, these strike me as credible and important arguments. One reason I say this is because, by demonstrating how Christianity flourished in the US, not because of its pristine logic, but because of an emphasis on affective conversions, i.e., conversion to a relationship rather than to a set of doctrines, Raschke allows us to provide a more coherent view of the recent history of the church.

When we look at some of the more hostile reviews of this book we can get a sense of what Raschke is up against: a group of intelligent, well-meaning people who, nonetheless, seem intent on dismissing anything they perceive as postmodern in a single, potted gesture. The typical move goes something like this: "Postmodernists" like Derrida, Barthes, Lyotard, Kristeva, and _____(fill in the blank because anyone remotely associated with critical theory will usually do) believe authorial intent is a blind alley and that all we have is the text. So there; "postmodernists" must be wrong, and we do not have to engage anything they say at a serious level. It seems to me the problem with such critiques, apart from being alarmingly misinformed, is that by failing to engage serious arguments at a substantive level they run the risk of making Christians look incurious, provincial, and unnecessarily doctrinaire.

The great 20th century rhetorician Kenneth Burke once commented on the striking similarity between Jesus' statements about refraining from judgment and the need for objective distance in academic work. Paul Ricoeur makes a similar point when he stresses that the starting point for any valid critique will nearly always be a disciplined attempt to appraise a text as kerygma (sincere testimony). Put more simply, this means we are obligated to do our best to listen fairly and reflectively before engaging in critique. This does not mean we have to swallow any hoo-ha that comes along. Only that we have an obligation to do our homework and check our own hearts to see how our own sinful impulses and biases may have intervened before we take an ad hominem sledgehammer to the thoughtful work of any scholar, but especially a Christian one. Some will no doubt claim that neither I nor Dr. Raschke have heeded this advice. In my estimation that would be an unfair assessment of Raschke's work, especially when such an argument represents an exclusive line of attack. That being said, at some later date when I have more time, I hope to expand this review since I do have some specific criticisms of his handling of a few specific issues, especially his critique of Francis Schaeffer whose importance, I believe, he underestimates.

Beyond that, I will say only this in my own defense. In recent years it has been my privilege to spend many hours struggling through the works of authors like Derrida, Barthes, Nietzsche, and Foucault... and to spend considerable time as well in discussions about many of the ideas Raschke touches upon in this and others of his works (the nature of rationality, the status of the Enlightenment project, the mediation of language, the impact of globalism, etc.). Quite often these discussions have included friends - Christian and otherwise - who have contrary views. I have found that when people play by the rules and give ideas a fair hearing we often discover common ground in unexpected places... even when we continue to disagree strongly. But when a Christian Pharisee steps in and writes off either the postmodern or the rationalist Samaritans as a hopeless lot, discussions fly apart and people begin to nurse corrosive resentments. I have been the Pharisee more times than I care to admit - once upon a time as a rationalist, and now - on occasion - as someone who has found some Christian solace even in the writings of post-structuralist authors I once condemned. The closest parallel I can think of right now to the sort of appropriation I have in mind here would be Bruce Benson's marvelous book Pious Nietzsche where he uncovers an extraordinary link between Nietzsche and Paul. And before anyone dismisses any such research as a priori heretical, consider that the church has a long history of citing Socrates (a pre-Christian, homosexual philosopher who claimed to receive instruction from a "daemon"-spirit) and Aristotle (another pre-Christian who believed women are biologically inferior.) Finally, if in any of this I sound hypocritical, I must beg early forgiveness while at the same time asking critics to attend faithfully to what authors they deem "postmodern" have to say before tossing them onto the scrap heap and encouraging others to do the same. We do not have to agree with one another, but it seems to me we have an obligation to be fair. If we do not read these authors, our children likely will, and we had best know what we are talking about.
