Betrayed! is the page-turning account of a loving Jewish family caught on divergent prongs of a historic conflict. When Stan Telchin's daughter accepts Jesus as her Messiah, she makes a touching plea for him to search out the truth for himself. Intending to prove her wrong, Telchin sets out on a vigorous and critical examination of the claims of Jesus Christ. He is astonished at what he learns and finds himself facing a wrenching and life-changing decision.
As readers travel with Telchin, they too will discover a deeper, fuller awareness of both Judaism and Christianity, as well as how God can heal wounds from the bitterest conflicts. Even more, readers will discover the inexorable power of the gospel. This new edition includes an update from the author and wisdom-filled words on Jewish identity.

From the Back Cover
"How can you be Jewish and believe in Jesus?" The Telchins were a happy, close-knit Jewish family until the day their daughter called from college with a shocking revelation: She had become a Christian. Judy's decision prompted her father to set out to disprove the Messiahship of Jesus in order to win her back. To do so, he had to study the Bible for the first time in his life. In the face of increasingly convincing proofs that Jesus is who He claimed to be, Stan Telchin found himself confronting thousands of years' worth of misunderstanding, hurt and prejudice from both sides. The key question that surfaced was this: How can a Jewish person embrace Jesus and Christianity without turning his back on his own people? More than thirty years after coming to know Jesus as Messiah, Stan Telchin reflects a passion to celebrate the heritage and culture of the Jewish people while seeking to unite Jews and Gentiles under the love of Messiah Jesus. Stan Telchin is a Messianic Jew who proclaims Jesus as Messiah in the United States and around the world, now under the umbrella of Jews for Jesus. He pastored a nondenominational fellowship in suburban Washington, D.C., for fourteen years. The author of three books, he and his wife, Elaine, live in Florida.

Introduction Every now and then during our devotional time my husband Paul and I reread the poem I wrote for him back in 1964. During these times of renewal and prayer, we talk over the events of our lives and share burdens we have for ourselves and others. Very often, we realize that the Great Shepherd has once again reached out and carried us through the day as we spend these introspective moments together.

If the pleasure of sharing these thoughts anew has taught us anything, it is this: that God’s Word is true. Our Heavenly Father is faithful and will never leave us or forsake us. As we come to Him daily, willing to be shaped and directed, His Word gives guideposts of clear direction. Almost everything we read, see, and experience shows us in some way that, although we do not visibly see God, He is with us. Over centuries of time others have looked back to understand that God’s Spirit and presence were there, even when they felt alone.

In our quiet moments of reflection, in the fellowship of others, and even in dreams, God opens the doors to our hearts. This is what happened when I originally wrote the poem, "Footprints". After hours of wrestling with the darkness of doubt and despair, I finally surrendered to Him and, in the early morning light of peace, wrote the poem as result of that spiritual experience.

Listen for the gentle stirring of God’s grace in your own mind and soul as you read these verses of encouragement. Each of us is different in our spiritual need, just as each of our days is different. God wants to place His signature on your life in a unique way. As you spend time, even just a few moments each day, reflecting on His Word, it will help you to know Him better. Spiritual growth is not so much what we have done, but the feeling of love for Him we put into everything we do. It is not so much in knowing about God that we grow, but in getting to know Him in a personal, relational way. It is in becoming "a friend of God" as Abraham did that we grow in His grace, talking with Him as our companion along the way. Letting God sift our thoughts and plans through the standards of His Word. May these verses encourage you anew each day as you walk with Him. God Is With Us ... In Our Dreams One night I dreamed a dream. Some of our dreams can have a powerful effect on us. All of us have, at one time or another, awakened laughing or fretful—and all because of a dream. The Bible tells us about many people who had dreams and visions that were given to them by God ...

[Jacob] had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. —Genesis 28:12

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. —Genesis 37:5

At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." —1 Kings 3:5

An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." —Matthew 2:13

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead." —Matthew 2:19–20

One day at about three in the afternoon [Cornelius] had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" —Acts 10:3

During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." —Acts 16:9 Some of our dreams are disappointing, but these are "wishful thinking" dreams, things we come up with in our own minds, circumstances or situations that we wish would happen. Only a small portion of these kind of dreams ever come true. In fact, these dreams can be harmful if we allow them to fill us with false hope ...

This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. —Jeremiah 23:16 Yet we should not ignore our dreams. God will sometimes use our dreams to assure us of his promises or to tell us something about himself. And when God does speak to us in dreams, he will also help us understand them ...

[God] said, "Listen to my words: "When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams." —Numbers 12:6

I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. —Joel 2:28 Jesus left his disciples with a great promise that is true for us today: "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

God’s presence with us is a reality. Acts 2:17 also tells us that God will pour his "Spirit on all people." As we dream our dreams with the knowledge that God is with us, we will begin to see things as Christ does and dream dreams inspired by the Holy Spirit that are worth re-telling and following.

An extremely moving, absorbing and powerful true story.
By M. D Roberts
An extremely moving, absorbing and powerful true story.
Stan Telchin in answering a telephone call from his daughter Judy received the worst possible message that a Jewish father could hear from his beloved daughter. The words that revealed that she had accepted Jesus as the Messiah.
To his eternal credit, Stan Telchin did not choose the path of so many in isolating and disowning his daughter. Instead he chose the path of love and tried to fully investigate her beliefs with a clear goal of trying to systematically disprove any element of truth that Judy might have in believing Jesus to be the Jewish Messiah.
Stan's studies were in depth and lengthy. The story follows him in his goal and surrounds an extremely dramatic family story in seeking out the very roots and foundations of their Jewish faith.
Stan decided to ask himself a number of questions along his journey, such as `can a Jew accept Jesus as the Messiah and remain a Jew'.
Five other basic questions formed the basis of his enquiries;-
1) Do I believe that God really exists ?
2) Do I believe that the Jewish Bible (The Tenach) is the divinely inspired word of God ?
3) Does this Bible prophesy about a coming Messiah ?
4) Is Jesus the Messiah ?
5) If he is, what does that do to me ?
Follow Stan Telchin as he pours over the Scriptures and the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with Christians through the ages. See how he comes to terms with the hostility of many elements of the so-called Christian church, the anti-Semitism emanating from so many, and his arrival at the Truth.
Stan, despite being the ultimate critic and with such a heart-felt agenda to restore his Jewish daughter from Christianity, finds that he too can only arrive at one decision. That being that all the Scriptures and all the prophesies can only prove one thing...Jesus is in fact who He says He is...the Messiah.
Stan's acceptance of this fact and the birth of his own Christian/Messianic faith (or however you wish to describe it) is treated with hostility by the vast majority of his Jewish `friends' and he finds isolation and hatred amongst those who once accepted him with open arms.
This is an enthralling story. Beautifully written and can be read in one day. Do yourself a favour and get this book, irrespective of your religion or faith. Everyone could do with studying the examples of those described herein. Best wishes.

A Great Introduction to a Jewish Perspective on Jesus
By Derek Leman
Some religious Jewish people will be offended by this book and that cannot be helped. Any book which presents a controversial topic is going to get slammed. But the fact is, and Stan presents it very well and very readably, there is a strong case to be made for the Messiahship of Jesus. Stan shows how one Jewish person, with a good Jewish education and strong ties to the Jewish community, looked at the evidence and was convinced. Those who do not find the evidence presented by Stan convincing can nonetheless see his sincerity throughout. With a Masters degree in Hebrew Bible, I feel qualified to say that the passages from the Hebrew Bible that Stan discusses are almost all translated very well and Stan's interpretation is sound in nearly every instance. I have seen this book change the lives of Christians and Jews alike and have given away dozens of copies myself.

Excellent!
By Derek Viljoen
Despite the negative reviews from some readers, the reasons they give are subjective. (i.e. - they disagree with Mr. Telchin's conclusions). Nevertheless, this is an excellent book on the topic at hand (one family's search for the Messiah). Saying you disagree with their conclusions doesn't make this a bad book, or even a dangerous one.
On the contrary. I found the level of research done by Mr. Telchin extraordinary. The accusations of misinterpretation notwithstanding, he addresses a lot of scriptures which not a few people (Jews included) have accepted as speaking of the Messiah, and gives "his" reasons for believing that they point to the historical Jesus.
I found it fascinating, and illuminating from a Jewish perspective of Jesus' Messianic claims.

Bin Laden's Bald Spot: & Other Stories, by Brian Doyle

Welcome to the peculiar and headlong world of Brian Doyle’s fiction, where the odd is happening all the time, reported upon by characters of every sort and stripe. Swirling voices and skeins of story, laughter and rage, ferocious attention to detail and sweeping nuttiness, tears and chortling—these stories will remind readers of the late giant David Foster Wallace, in their straightforward accounts of anything-but-straightforward events; of modern short story pioneer Raymond Carver, a bit, in their blunt, unadorned dialogue; and of Julia Whitty, a bit, in their willingness to believe what is happening, even if it absolutely shouldn’t be.

Funny, piercing, unique, memorable, this is a collection of stories readers will find nearly impossible to forget:

... The barber who shaves the heads of the thugs in Bin Laden’s cave tells cheerful stories of life with the preening video-obsessed leader, who has a bald spot shaped just like Iceland.

... A husband gathers all of his wife’s previous boyfriends for a long day on a winery-touring bus.

... A teenage boy drives off into the sunset with his troubled sister’s small daughters…and the loser husband locked in the trunk of the car.

... The late Joseph Kennedy pours out his heart to a golf-course bartender moments before the stroke that silenced him forever.

… A man digging in his garden finds a brand-new baby boy, still alive, and has a chat with the teenage neighbor girl whose son it is.

... A man born on a Greyhound bus eventually buys the entire Greyhound Bus Company and revolutionizes Western civilization.

... A mountainous bishop dies and the counting of the various keys to his house turns… tense.

... A man discovers his wife having an affair, takes up running to grapple with his emotions, and discovers everyone else on the road is a cuckold too.

And many others.

Brilliant writing in a small package.
By Jill Meyer
I am not a great lover of short stories. To me, they're generally not as "filling" as longer fiction. But, recently, I've discovered that short story writers have to be more deft than novelists because they don't have the time to really stretch out a story. Their writing has to be precise, with characterisation often foremost and plot of secondary importance.

Brian Doyle's new collection of short stories is nothing short of brilliant. There are about 25 of them; the first and last are about the same character, Osama Bin Ladin's barber. Most are written in the first person and in Doyle's firm hand and imagination, his characters jump off the page. As a reader, I was left with wanting MORE. (That actually is one of my objections to short stories, with the good ones, I want MORE.) Almost every story could be expanded into novel form.

The stories are about men and their lives. Most are set in present day, but some are set in the past. And the "past" can be measured by both time and thought. Most of the characters are unforgettable. But the best stories, I think, involved Joseph Kennedy (never identified by name) and Boston's Bernard Cardinal Law. Both men are "examined" though the eyes of others. Their lives, and the ramifications of their lives' deeds, are captured by Doyle in a spare, almost detached, way. Actually, all of Doyle's characters, whether real or imagined, are sharply drawn.

If you're a fan of short stories - and I'm becoming more of one - you won't want to skip this small book. I do hope, though, that Brian Doyle does expand some of his stories in length to novels. He'll have one reader already!

Brilliant
By Ashley Johansen
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories by Brian Doyle. I am under no delusions about the fact that my interest stemmed from an immediate appreciation for this man and his work after hearing him read in person. His personality shines through his words in indescribable ways, and there is nothing but inspiration and hope and knowledge of incredibly true things to be learned from his stories and essays.
Brian Doyle has so much passion for his country, for his fellow men, for the world around him. As he writes the funny things, he laughs to himself, and when he writes the sad things, I know he cries. I've watched him cry while reading a story I know he's read a million different times. The emotion never stops being close to him. And that comes through in his writing. He writes about old things in a way that allows you to see them in a new light. He presents impossibilities as everyday occurrences, and everyday occurrences as miraculous moments of human possibility. If you are a pessimist, and enjoy being such, do not read this book. It will inspire you to see the best in everything, even the tragedies, and force you to appreciate the beauty of human strength and emotion. If you want to feel inspired, or to experience really excellent writing, pick this one up. You won't regret it.
This writing has effected my own, and as a writer, I don't usually take kindly to that sort of influence. But I can think of nothing better than emulating such a kind, honest, fresh writer. His work is detailed in a way that makes it interesting, not boring, because the details are in human personality, not physical traits.
Read this book.
Seriously.
Read it now.

No way, not me....?
By Diane Estrella
After seeing those ultimate couponer's on TV, I thought, `No way, not me.'

Well, I definitely won't be taking it as far as those extremists do, but this book was a great encouragement to find what I feel comfortable doing and challenged me to look into easy ways to take it a step further.

I did learn two really interesting things that will be changing the way I do my shopping. First, stores have pricing cycles. Any particular item can fluctuate in price, so you get the same exact item at a different cost depending on when you buy it. That same box of Cheerios can range in price during a month's time from $2.00 to $3.50. Price watching can automatically save you money even before you pull out a coupon. If you use a coupon when those Cheerios are at the bottom of its pricing cycle then that item goes even lower. Wow.

Secondly, I need to stock up on these great deals for when the great deals aren't available. We will always need toilet paper (true dat), so when it is at the bottom of the pricing schedule and I have ten coupons, I need to buy ten of them. This is an uncomfortable place for me. I do not need ten of these right now, but I will in the upcoming weeks use them all, so why not buy them at their lowest possible cost??? A little pre-planning and a bit of closet space will save me in the long run and ultimately lower my grocery bill each week.

So now I only have one question for you...... How low can YOU go?

The publisher sent me the above book for review purposes. It will allow me to keep the book. I have no other connection to and have received no other compensation from Revell/Baker Publishing Group.

No Nonsense--Common Sense Couponing
By IronManley12
What a relief! Someone who shows people how to use coupons like a normal person, not someone on a TV show! Kasey did a great job of explaining a realistic approach to couponing and how to break it down into a way that works for real people. If you're looking to save money without looking like a crazy person or talking five-hour-long shopping trips to stock pile random crap you won't ever use THIS is the book for you! Excellent.

Not Your Run-Of-The-Mill Couponing Book
By Griffin
This book is not like any other couponing book you will find. It is so much more! Kasey Knight Trenum has the most honest, humorous and, at times heart-warming perspective on couponing. She admits that she doesn’t “like” couponing but explains how it is simply a means to help provide for her family.

This book is the perfect tool for beginning couponers. Kasey has a great way of explaining every aspect of couponing in a simple to understand manner while at the same time sharing her own light-hearted stories that provide insight to all the information she is giving you. You will find yourself learning and laughing, even sometimes crying all at the same time!

Kasey walks you through each step of couponing from where to get the coupons, organizing your coupons, how to use them, what to buy, where to buy and even how to store the abundance of food you will inevitably acquire through couponing all while saving your family money!

Unlike a lot of “extreme couponing” books, shows and/or websites Kasey stresses the need for morals, ethics and integrity when couponing which is, in my opinion, sorely lacking in the world in general not just when shopping. She teaches how she has saved so much money for her family that it has allowed her to give to people in need and encourages us to do the same.

I believe this book will not only change your family’s financial situation but will also teach you how to find peace when faced with economic instability and hardships.

A Jewish Mother in Shangri-la, by Rosie Rosenzweig

An old joke tells of a Jewish woman who treks to the Himalayas to seek an audience with a guru sitting in seclusion on a mountaintop. When at last she comes before him, she implores: "Sheldon, come home!"

Rosie Rosenzweig became that Jewish mother—but in real life, the story has a different ending. Instead of asking her Buddhist son, Ben, to come home, Rosie accepts his invitation to find out about Buddhism firsthand. Together they visit retreat centers in Europe and Asia and meet leading meditation masters who are Ben's gurus: Vietnamese teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and Tibetan lamas Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche. While struggling to come to terms with Ben's choice of a spiritual path so different from everything that she cherishes, Rosie finds that she is learning more about herself than she anticipated.

The adventures of Rosie recounts take her from her Boston suburb to a Zen hermitage in France, an enclave of Tibetan Buddhists in Nepal, and finally to her own spiritual home in Jerusalem. Whether she is practicing mindfulness meditation, sharing a cup of tea with a Zen master, or worrying about bowing down to idols, Rosie is intent in her quest to find common ground between two ancient traditions, to deepen her understanding of her son, and to find a way to her own authentic experience of truth. Hers is a mission of peace that seeks to build a bridge of understanding between cultures and faiths while remaining true to her own Jewish identity.

From Library Journal
In her portrait of the different religious paths of a mother and her son, Rosenzweig (The Jewish Guide to Boston and New England, Jewish Advocate, 1995) explains family conflicts and turmoil with honesty and personal insight. A faithful Jew, Rosenzweig seeks to reconcile her difference with her son, Ben, a devout Buddhist, by going with him to visit Buddhist gurus in France and Nepal, attending conferences, and meditating in the Israeli desert. Rosenzweig writes about Jewish and Buddhist mystical practices of concentration and meditation and each faith's concept of "nothingness." As a result of her exploration, Rosenzweig finds a framework for her life and the freedom lovingly to support her son's choices. This eclectic, personal work is recommended for New Age collections.?Gene Shaw, NYPL

A wry and warm story of connection and meditation.
By A Customer
This is a book of many layers. It begins with a dilemma common to religious parents -- what to do when a child leaves the faith -- moves through a journey of understanding -- and winds up as a commentary on the practice of meditation within Judaism. The last of these layers moves towards spiritualism, but it is saved from fuzziness by Rosenzweig's careful working out of her own boundaries in regards to Judaism. And we've seen how she works out these boundaries in her trip to Nepal. Her son, whom like every Jewish mother she thought would grow up to be a brilliant rabbi, becomes a devout Buddhist. He asks her to come with him to Nepal to meet his "root guru." There, in the Buddhist monastary, Rosenzweig makes connections between Buddhism and Judaism -- finding stone carvings in the shape of the Star of David, discovering some of the patterns of Orthodoxy in the daily lives of the monastary -- and she discovers where she cannot go -- she must refuse to bow to Buddha or take the vows of Buddhist teaching. It's this combination of connection and limits that makes the book an honest one. It is the honesty of the language here, the way we get to watch the author struggle in her understanding and her own spirituality, that makes this a book worth reading -- no matter what our religion.

Unexpectedly Genuine
By A Customer
New Age spirituality--with its dilettantist approach and breathless testimonials that bleach all the colour out of religion in an attempt to prove its basic unity--makes me queasy. The current fascination the mass media have with Tibetan Buddhism is sadly degrading to those who practice it. These are the things that sprang to mind when I saw the title of this book, "A Jewish Mother in Shangri-la."
Still I read it, and I'm glad I did, for I was shown how wrong my initial prejudice had been. This is a tightly-bound story of a very personal journey, and although personal there is much that I could identify with. Ostensibly it is about a woman's attempt to understand her son's spiritual path, and although mother and son are portrayed together on the cover in grisly colour this narrative has little to do with the son at all; he merely provides a foil or backdrop for the main subject, the author's path, which is dealt with quietly but persistently, without sensationalism, and without digression from the key questions she seeks answers to: Wherein lies the profundity of Buddhist insight? Did Judaism ever have an equally profound lineage of wisdom transmission? Does it still? Does Buddhist practice *really* contradict Mosaic law? If it does, then why do they both seem authentic?
The author does not presume to answer these questions with simple platitudes. Instead she faces them, time and again, with honest uncertainty. She leaves us feeling that this story has no end, and this, considering her subject, is appropriate.
The main target audience for this book would seem to be Jewish, for her references are primarily to the Bible, the Talmud, and Jewish history. But anyone with an interest in these subjects, not just Jews, would benefit from reading it. It is also something of a primer on Jewish mysticism, and even some Jews may be surprised to find such depth of meditation practice in their own tradition as the author describes. As for Buddhism, details are scant, and it is mainly a _flavour_ of the Dharma that is conveyed: we get a taste of Thich Nhat Hanh's style of Vietnamese Zen teaching on the one hand, and Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche's Tibetan style on the other. This lack of philosophical detail is not a fault, though, for neither Buddhism nor Judaism are the book's real focus. One woman's relentless prodding of the truth is the focus, and she plainly considers the important point for maintaining the vitality of a spiritual path to be relentless questioning and not giving in to the impulse to accept an easy answer to anything.

Let it Go Through You
By Robin Friedman
It is a difficult experience for a parent when a child reaches adulthood and makes a fundamental life decision different from the parent's own. Possibly the most trying of such situations involves religion -- not simply lapsing from practice but rather choosing a different religion from one's parents and embracing it fully and wholeheartedly.

Rosie Resenzweig's book "A Jewish Mother in Shangri-la" (1998) tells the story of her to response to the decision of her son Ben to follow the path of Tibetan Buddhism. Her book, as it develops, is much more about her own spiritual search than that of her son. Rosenzweig and her therapist husband, Sandy, had themselves had a difficult and varied time in matters of religion, having participated themselves in various New Age and Eastern groups in the 1960s and 70s. They had disagreements in their marriage and Rosie Rosenzweig faced issues with her career and with the death, over a brief time period, of several close members of her family. The family situation improved with time and both Rosie and Sandy found their way to an increasingly observant Orthodox Judaism.

Ben Rosenzweig, from this account, was a quiet, studious child who became seriously interested in Buddhism during a college year in Nepal. Following study, and several further trips to the East, he formally took refuge (in the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha) but did not renounce his Jewish faith. Rosie Rosenzweig was hearbroken.

The story of Rosie and Ben begins in earnest when Ben takes and completes a three-year meditation retreat in upstate New York during which time mother and son correspond. Following the retreat Rosie accepts Ben's invitation to accompany him on a five-week trip to Europe and Asia to learn about Buddhism. They spend two weeks in France in the Plum Village Center of the Vietnamese Zen monk Thich Nhat Hanh and have an audience with him. They spend three weeks in Nepal and meet Ben's chief guru, an aging Tibetan monk named Tulu Urgyen Rinpoche, and Rosie receives a rare wisdom transmission from him.

The Buddhists that Rosie meets are impressed with her openness, joie de vivre and willingness to learn. Rosie is increasingly impressed with the Buddhist path and search for wisdom as she tries to find parallels in it to her Jewish experience and teachings. She struggles to maintain her Jewish practices during the trip, including observing the Sabbath and avoiding unkosher food, and, in following the Jewish prohibition against image-worship, Rosie carefully avoids bowing to idols or persons. She gives the gurus she meets copies of the "Tanya" a Jewish mystical book by the founder of Lubavitcher Hasidism. Rosie learns to respect, if not share, her son's chosen religious path and reconciliation and love come to the fore between mother and son.

But Rosie's own story and interest in Buddhism go further. When she returns from her trip (Ben stays in Nepal) she continues to study Buddhism while reflecting upon her own Jewish practice. During a pilgrimage to Israel she becomes increasingly drawn to Jewish mysticism, seeing in it parallels to what she found in Buddhism but with a Jewish content. On a bus trip through a desert (p. 156), Rosie has a dream -- she has several during the course of the book -- during which a voice tells her to "let it go through you" -- a difficult and obscure teaching that could be delivered by many religious or mystical traditions. Rosie learns to develop a deeply personalized approach to her Jewishness through a study of Jewish mysticism -- a part of Judaism that still is too little explored. She tells the reader that "[m]y belief system has been expanded to include the possiblity of many approaches to Divinity" (p. 167) as she strives to accomodate what she has learned from Buddhist meditation practice and Buddhist texts (including a text called the Dantabhuni Sutta, no 126 from the mid-length discourses -- Mahjima Nikya of the Pali canons on the importance of taming the mind) with Jewish teachings and with her developing interest in Jewish mysticism. She is able to lose the guilt that she carried with her -- the feeling that the problems with her marriage and the difficulties of raising children were responsbible for Ben's turn to Buddhism -- in finding and expanding her own path which includes substantial Buddhist learning.

This is a short, engagingly written book that will be of interest to those who have made a change in their own spiritual direction or who have loved ones who have made such a change.

Announcing the Kingdom: The Story of God's Mission in the Bible, by Arthur F. Glasser, Charles E. Van Engen, Dean S. Gilliland, Shawn B. R

Announcing the Kingdom provides a comprehensive survey of the biblical foundation of mission. It investigates the development of the kingdom of God theme in the Old Testament, describing what the concept tells us about God's mission in creation, the flood, and the covenant with Abraham. It then describes God's mission through the nation of Israel during the exodus, at Mt. Sinai, and through the kings of Israel. The book then examines God's mission as Israel is sent into exile and the stage is set for the Messiah's coming.
Finally, the book considers the fulfillment of the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ and the church. It examines Jesus' parables and ministry, his proclamation of God's kingdom among the nations, and the work of the Holy Spirit through the church.
Announcing the Kingdom is the product of Arthur Glasser's more than thirty years of teaching and has been used by thousands of students at Fuller Theological Seminary. Now revised by Glasser's colleagues, this study provides mission workers and students with a new understanding of their calling and its biblical foundation.

An Encouraging Book!
By Mike Karim
What a pleasure to read this book! Glasser's view of Scripture is a delight to read, and encouraged this missionary in some great ways. Here are a few.
Glasser perceives the common thread of the Kingdom of God to hold the totality of Scripture together. Without needing to stretch or create seams, Glasser assists the readers in understanding God's sovereignty over Heaven and Earth and that "[t]he whole Bible is a missionary book."
The description of the calling of Abraham, and the missiological implications of the covenant are brought out in ch. 4. One of the frequent implications throughout the book is prayer, and it finds its first expression in this chapter: Abraham follows the discovery of God's graciousness (Gen. 18) with intercession. Glasser often reminds the reader that contact with the Kingdom of God is through prayer, and through communication with God, the mission is advanced. One omission in the advance of the mission, the section on "Mission and Passivity" notwithstanding (!), is the anticipatory response of Abraham to the Egyptians (Gen 12:10 ff); many missiologists and missionaries have observed the failure of Abraham to "bless" the Egyptians, and Glasser would have done well to elaborate on this forgetful act on Abraham's behalf.
The long elaboration of God's Mission through Jesus Christ (ch. 12) is a real treat. The chapter on "Demonstration" is welcome; Glasser does us all a favor by examining the deeds of Jesus, throwing light not only on Christology, but also in the process, delivering missiological distinctiveness to the familiar offices of Christ by adding the role of "servant." The section on "Teacher-Trainer," based upon John 1-4, was an unexpected appearance. The discussion on "The Consolidation of Faith" was challenging; later in the book, though, I wondered about some possible backtracking from some of the biblical description of God's "dramatic answers" that deepens the faith of new disciples. Apart from that curiosity arriving admittedly retrospectively, the chapter concludes strong with the emphasis that Jesus intentionally mentored and prepared "the Twelve for leadership in the missionary community of the Kingdom- the church." I came away with fresh and renewed convictions regarding leadership development.
One location that I had great hope for disappointed me, and that regret was the description of "God's Kingdom Extends over the Powers" (ch. 21). Glasser presumably addresses some nameless Christian leaders regarding the notion of "power evangelism." (Peter Wagner? The late John Wimber?) My critique here is that 1) Glasser seems to have dodged any response to John 14:1-14, especially v. 14 (although Glasser has employed the same passage elsewhere to serve some other interesting ends!), and I remain wondering why, and 2) the same Paul Hiebert who wrote the Foreword to this book also authored the now famous paper "The Flaw of the Excluded Middle:" why, then, would Glasser explicitly articulate a rationale for keeping the "excluded middle" in evangelism? Granted, Hiebert was no fan of the "Signs and Wonders" crowd at Fuller, but he compassionately and intelligently argued for the biblical presence of the Holy Spirit and power in anyone's ministry! My reading of this section prompted the rereading of chapter 12, and I wondered why any "mature Christian" would now consider supernatural phenomenon for the "consolidating" of the faith of a new Christian, but exclude from their ministry of evangelism any participation or expectation of signs and wonders. Glasser is not a cessationist! But, the splitting of the availability of God's power by the author creates confusion.
This book is good, and I am sure that I will read it again. I would have liked to read Glasser's engagement with some later exegetes like Joel Green, N.T. Wright and Raymond Brown; my hunch is that Glasser's work would become bullet-proof. Those desires notwithstanding, this book will now jump up alongside the works of Ladd and Cullmann: it is that strong. There are some real gems in here, but I would assert that Glasser has served the Kingdom and us in a larger fashion by developing the theme of the Kingdom of God that runs throughout Scripture, and, hopefully, empower the People of God for participation in the missio Dei.

Kingdom is Relevant
By Matthew D. Cobb
i thought that the book was a great introduction to the idea of the kingdom of God and its role in the entire Bible. The book was written in a scholarly fashion, but was accessible to anyone with Biblical knowledge. It sets a great foundation for anyone who is serious about critical Biblical interpretation and especially the influence of the Kingdom of God on the Bible. It brought me great insight and appreciation to what the Bible discusses about Kingdom and its power in my own life.

The Most Thorough Book on the Kingdom of God!
By Michael V. Baxter
Having read 5 well-published books within a timespan of 3 months on the subject of the Kingdom of God, this book was the most thorough and thought provoking. It's one downfall is the author's propencity to be sidetracked from the main subject at hand and his use of secular humanistic venacular. Besides these, it is very comprehensive and a joy to read yet not written for one's first book on the subject. If looking for an introductory book, look into Roberts's book entitled: God's Big Picture.

We Need an Abridged Version
By Benjamin C. Janssen
There can be no denying that Aubrey Malphurs is passionate for the church and wants to see it grow and succeed. He has contributed a lot of paper and ink to the topic of the church, and this book contains a lot of that material--425 pages worth to be exact. Anyone reading this book will appreciate the enthusiasm with which Malphurs approaches the subject. After all, he is not only a seminary professor but a pastor as well.

I am not sure, however, that the contents of the book live up to the passion of the author. This book was recommended to me because of Malphurs' expertise in church planting, and with the title of the book I assumed it would have much to suggest to one who is involved in the planting of a new church. But as others have pointed out, the book is not entirely for new church startups. Indeed the subtitle of the book is A Comprehensive Guide for New Churches and Those Desiring Renewal. And not everything that applies to churches seeking renewal is immediately helpful to churches just starting out, or vice-versa.

The book is divided into four sections, nicely (annoyingly?) alliterated. Part 1 is entitled "The Preparation for Church Planting." Here the author deals with such basics as why there is a need for church planting and how a church plant can be supported. Part 2, "The Personnel of Church Planting," consists of two chapters dealing with the assessment of a prospective church planter. In Part 3, "The Principles of Church Planting," the reader will find discussion regarding the traditional aspects of church life such as lay involvement, worship, evangelism, and small groups. Part 4 is dedicated to "The Process of Church Planting." Here we find what we would expect to see in a book with this title--practical advice for each stage of the church planting process.

There are two reasons that I found this book to be a disappointment. First, it took me 250 pages before I got to the most helpful section of the book (Part 4). I suppose that if one knew absolutely nothing about the church or vocational ministry he might find the first three sections to be informative. But such persons are not likely to pick up this book anyway. The whole assessment process described with much ink in Part 2 is tiring and overdone, again unless you have never been through any type of assessment process. I did not find much new advice in Part 3 either. I wish I had just read Part 4 and skipped the rest. One might wish the book came in an "abridged" version for just such a purpose!

Second, Malphurs' philosophy of church planting seems dated. He appears to be heavily influenced by the Church Growth movement. I lost track of how many times he referenced Willow Creek or Saddleback as examples to emulate. Many of us are frustrated with where such ideology has led the church regardless of how many numbers megachurches like these two can report. It would be nice to hear about a fresh approach to church planting and not one that depends upon high-powered programs to bring unbelievers to our events so trained professionals can "seal the deal."

Again, one cannot deny that Malphurs has put a lot of the modern thought on church planting in writing and so this book has value so far as that approach can contribute to this activity. I'm sure there are many who might profit from the chapter questions and worksheets that are provided which are intended to help one think through specifics of the task. But for me, there just does not seem to be enough fresh thinking in this book to warrant much attention to it. I was quite disappointed with this one and can only give it 2 ½ stars.

A Popular Book, And Deservedly So
By Rev. Thomas Scarborough
This has been a popular book, and deservedly so. It is now in its seventh printing. Not only is it about Church planting. As the subtitle suggests, it also has much to offer "those desiring renewal".

The author illustrates the problem in America by quoting Win Arn: "Between 80% and 85% of all churches in America are either plateaued or are declining." What to do? "While some established churches will renew themselves and successfully make the transition, this will be too painful and too difficult for the bulk of them." In short, "the future lies with church planting". However, this having been said, the author again quotes Win Arn, that "many" planted Churches "begin a plateau and/or slow decline around their 15th-18th year". That is, they may well become what they set out to replace. I have the uneasy sense that, until one should discover the key to the renewal of established Churches, one might miss the real reasons for stagnation and decline.

The book has more than one-thousand headings through well over four hundred pages. Nevertheless, I shall try to give some brief impression. It begins on a note of excitement -- that "God is capable of doing extraordinary things". It continues by discussing "financial sources" and "financial principles". It summarises the strengths, weaknesses, and giftings that a person may bring to Church planting -- together with appropriate assessment tools and pointers. The author enters upon the importance of developing "a single, clear vision". He emphasises the role both of the leader and the congregation in ministry. He surveys important issues of culture, and outlines "the importance of worship". A highlight of the book is a section on "pursuing lost people with a passion". This represents a superb resource on evangelism.

However, the book is plainly written by Americans for Americans. It reveals an "enclosed" American (respectively Western) view. For instance, the author writes that small groups "are not limited by location". One wonders whether he considered (for example) the absence of personal transport, the danger of being out of doors, or restrictions on movement or hospitality. The use of computers is mentioned as though computers should populate every Church, not to speak of electrical outlets. The book's views on leadership would seem a classic representation of the American "can do" attitude. One misses almost any reference to weakness, dependence, or faith in this section. Finally, perspectives on evangelicalism tend to reflect the American view. Evangelicalism is often, it seems, what the West would define it to be.

However, these comments should in no way detract from the overall value of the book. Despite the criticisms, I would not consider that they significantly reduce the value of an outstanding volume. In fact I found it an inspiration -- a motivation.

A Comprehensive, Practical Method for Worship Design

Constance Cherry sets forth basic principles and demonstrates how those principles are conducive to virtually any style of worship practiced today in a myriad of Christian communities. Worship leaders will learn how to create services that are faithful to Scripture, historically conscious, relevant to God, Christ-centered, and engaging for worshipers of all ages.

"Cherry shows us that pastoral theology and the practice of theology is never an 'either-or' but always a 'both-and.' Let's follow her lead and rediscover the unity that exists between the two."--Robert E. Webber, author of Ancient-Future Worship

"Cherry's book is one I have been hoping for. The Worship Architect is a helpful combination of solid theology, artistic creativity, pastoral sensitivity, and wisdom gained from the author's wealth of experience in leading and planning worship."--Lester Ruth, Lily May Jarvis Professor of Christian Worship, Asbury Theological Seminary

"Many books about corporate worship focus on style and technique, neglecting theological substance. Others are substantive but neglect the vital role that stylistic choices and approaches to planning have in the week-in, week-out life of congregations. Cherry approaches her task by inviting us all to make regular border crossings between theory and practice. The result is a book well-suited to promote the lifelong learning needed for any effective ministry leader."--John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary

"Congratulations to Constance Cherry for offering a much-needed guide for planning worship in our divergent and often antagonistic context of Christian worship. The Worship Architect offers biblical, historical, and theological material to help readers understand the choices before worship planners and leaders today. Cherry then offers worship leaders practical and responsible recommendations for discerning among the options they face. This is a most welcome book for a crucial time."--Todd E. Johnson, Brehm Chair of Worship, Theology, and the Arts, Fuller Theological Seminary

One of the best worship planning resources yet!
By Joshua Banner
I've been teaching a Theology and Worship course for four years now and have struggled to find the right readings because, as Paul Westermeyer and Charlotte Kroeker both agree, the study of Church music is vastly interdisciplinary. While I delight in the theoretical questions that surround the church and its musical culture, when we get down to the rubber hitting the road applications like the order of service, song selection, and congregational participation, The Worship Architect serves us well.

Honestly, I typically have an 'allergic reaction' to prescriptive ministry texts. While the book is filled with lists and lists of practical questions and ideas, it avoids being pedantically heavy handed. Cherry's intent is to direct our attention to the important issues that must be addressed in order to plan our services well and she does this efficiently. The exhaustive content may be dizzying for my students but it is a valuable reference to have on hand for leaders. The book is worth its price if only for the concise list of questions for evaluating a worship song. I had groups of my student leaders use this in a training retreat last week and there was much fruit from their discussions and discernment.

The theological content in the first half of the text (Cherry's "four load bearing walls") may be relatively cursory, it serves as a good primer for opening the discussion of liturgical theology for novices--for the college student.

This will be an important book for training worship leaders from both traditional and contemporary churches but especially the contemporary. With the boom of contemporary worship in the last 20-30 years we need to expect more from our contemporary leaders than to be talented, winsome and spirit-filled. Many of the books with this kind of liturgical content are written in a tone and vocabulary that will only preach to their respective choirs. But Cherry's approach is accessible and ecumenical and will help contemporary leaders conceive a substantial approach to worship planning, a weighty respect for each part of a service and an appropriate discernment essential to leading well.

Must Read for Pastors and Worship Leaders
By Marc L. Kelley
This book is a fantastic read for any pastor or worship leader desiring to make their services more biblical and meaningful. Cherry enhances our understanding of worship, provides a sound structure for planning and considering the elements of worship and gives tons of practical ideas. The beauty of this publication is that it is not limited in style, but instead cuts through a lot of the surface discussions and worship trends to get to the heart of of matters. I wish I had read this book years ago!
