OH YES... YOU CAN!

I have read a lot of books and I have been blessed but this book...it is amazing. Barbara Yoder captured the essence of all that I thought, and wondered, and decided about my life with God.

I say if you are going through a dark place you need to read this book to survive it. If you are not going through a dark place you need to read this book to know what to do when the dark place comes...and it will come...because life is made up of hills and valleys.

This anointed book will give you the STRENGTH to be the OVERCOMER God has called you to be.

Wonderful Reading

This is one of the rare books that remind me that God is always there and on my side, even when i don't feel him or see him moving, he is still God. If you need encouraged and if your faith needs lifted this book is for you, and if you are going through things you don't understand as a christian, may God bless you to read this. God Bless !

A must read!

This is a book to encourage christians you will experience wilderness (valley) experiences as you walk with Christ because there is a process before receiving the promise. As you walk "through" the valley of the shadow of death you will fear no evil. Don't forget to remember a shadow won't harm you. A shadow only appears when the "sun" is shining. For the christian our "son" is Jesus Christ. Be blessed.

David Stark is the director of Changing Church through Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, Minnesota. The founder and director of training for Church Innovations, he has led dozens of workshops and seminars throughout the United States and has developed masters for small groups that are used by churches from a variety of denominations. David holds an M.Div. and has published a number of resources, including the LifeKeys books, for groups. He lives in Minnesota with his wife and two sons. Betty Veldman Wieland was introduced to small groups through a women's Bible study. The experience ignited her passion for God's Word and led her to leadership positions in Christian Reformed Home Missions' small group ministry. Betty has two adult sons and she and her husband live in Michigan.

Conflicting Information

This book effectively advocates a departure from mechanistic "one fits all" model of small groups in congregations, to more relational, God-centered approaches to this ministry. However, the authors ultimate vision, to grow people to Christ yet simultaneously offer leaders the helm of the group based on their own gifts and motivations, imparts a conflicting agenda and potential strain on the group leaders.

On one hand, the authors attest that group leaders can't inspire "what they haven't lived and spiritually died to." They also assess that people should not be pushed along according to the church's agenda. Rather, the passions of the leadership of the laity to create small groups, as they are relationally connected to the talents God has already given them, is advocated. There is also a further direct connection made between the passion and talents of leaders, as they own what they create. Stark even contends,"They know how to design things better than the clergy".

He provides further evidence of the laity's potential empowerment via thought provoking questions asked of potential small group leaders by the pastor or other church staff, such as: What kind of small group would compel you to change your schedule? Who's your target audience? Which community do you want to serve? What are the desired results? What three or four outcomes do you want to achieve. The author even attests that the people should be free to form their own groups.

Yet, Stark also indicates that the primary purpose of the small groups is to grow people in their faith. To further this agenda, he says that leaders must bond with each of the group's members through relationship building, to focus on where they are in their "season of faith", and to become acutely aware of current events and wounds in the peoples lives. Yet, how does a small group team retain its viability when the empowerment of group leaders is eclipsed by the church's internal focus to grow people in their faith?

Furthermore, whether these questions surface at all depends on the style of group. A task oriented team, for example, will not typically be asked questions of a personal nature by the group leader. Personal questions are also not mandated in acquaintance making hospitality teams.

I would agree with the authors that should a potential group leader come to the pastor with an idea, there must be some boundaries in place by the church. Yet, the authors contention that the groups must always fit within the church's image ("nesting vision"),as defined by the pastor, leadership team or coach, conflicts with their own commentary throughout the book, that the Holy Spirit is solely responsible for growth among small group members and the group as a whole.

In essence, "Growing People through Small Groups" reflects that the small group leader is expected to take on the larger issues of faith development among its members, which, in effect, could substantially compromise the intended focus of the small group itself.

One of the best

Lingenfelter's book is one of the best I've read on mission leadership. It provides a framework that captures the best of leadership theory and matches it with solid cross-cultural dimensions of ministry. As the world becomes more globalized in nature yet nationalistic in perspective, this book provides a set of terrific case studies to help global leaders deal with the realities of global leadership today. In particular, Lingenfelter's reliance on scripture as a model for effective leading is most instructive and his personal examples give pragmatic handles for leaders to understand what he presents.

Hopefully, the book will stir even more fruitful research and dialog on leadership today.

Going into cross-culture ministry? A must read...

Leading Cross-Culturally by Sherwood G. Lingenfelter is a compilation of case studies done throughout the world of missions that focus on leadership, culture, and the glorification of God's Kingdom work. Lingenfelter is senior vice president at Fuller theological Seminary, respected teacher in cross-cultural work and Christian leadership, and an accomplished author. His goals or visions for this volume are outlined in four areas that Lingenfelter points out as the following. The first area "is to help leaders to understand their personal culture of leadership and how that culture pervades their thinking about vision, community, and teamwork." Second, "is to equip the reader to become an effective learner in another cultural context, with specific focus on learning to build communities of trust." Third, "is to reflect on how the human propensity to seek power and control pervades all persons and cultures and infects leaders of every kind." Fourth and finally, "is to define the pathways for biblically based, Christ-centered, power-given leadership in single culture and multicultural contexts" (8-9).

Lingenfelter's first case studies draw from the areas of how ones home culture affects their leadership abilities, visions, work, and values when dealing with a new culture. Lingenfelter says, "All Christian leaders, regardless of their cultural background, carry their personal histories and cultural biases with them wherever they serve" (15). This affects ones leadership abilities in all facets when dealing with cultures outside the borders of one's home country, and without acknowledging and directly dealing with this from the outset of one's cross-cultural ministry; issues are sure to abound. The issues emerge when trying to inspire people from different cultural background "to achieve a compelling vision of faith" (30), but each party does not really understand the cultural barriers that separate them and sometimes are not willing try to understand them. Therefore, the results are division. Understanding a cultures values and adapting them to our own leadership styles in order to bring about change is of utmost importance, even if it goes against one's personal concepts of true leadership and how to achieve the results they want. However, missionaries must also be aware that they are prone to fall back into what Lingenfelter calls "default culture" (71). Default culture is "the culture people learn from their parents and peers from birth, with all the inherent strengths and weaknesses of their society" (71). This is common for people to do when they find themselves facing challenging times in another culture (which everyone missionary will) and shows the importance of understanding who one is and being aware of the culture that they find themselves working amongst.

Lingenfelter also points out that our "vision flows from the mission of God as articulated in the scriptures" (33) and this mission is not ours to define. "It is not our task to define that mission for our time. God is already at work in the power of the Holy Spirit, and our task is to ask, how has God gone before us, and what is God already doing in our world? As we listen to the Holy Spirit and seek to align ourselves with what God is already doing in the world, God will reveal his vision and purpose for us." (33). I completely agree on the subject of adapting to our host culture, and understanding vision and mission. Too often, our cultural upbringing, our desires, our way of thinking, and our ideas (birthed from our wants) dictates one's concept of leadership, vision, and mission. Lingenfelter's knowledge, along with the case studies, framework this perfectly.

The next area that I would like to highlight is what Lingenfelter calls, "Covenant Community." Covenant Community encompasses knowledge that, although we come from different cultures, we are all "chosen people" who are "on a mission" and "have received mercy" (75). It also means that "we must commit together to teach and practice the foundational principles of the `body of Christ' or `covenant' relationship" (75). Lingenfelter outlines a covenant community as the following:

1. Identity in Christ as God's chosen people.
2. Presence of the Holy Spirit
3. Love one another
4. One body - serving in diversity
5. One body - working together in unity
6. Submitting to one another
7. Speaking graciously
8. Restoring mercifully

Lingenfelter makes it quite clear in his writing that this Biblical description of a "Covenant Community" is essential in leading cross-cultural ministry. Each area in this community finds it identity built from Biblical principles and molded by leaders like Jesus and the Apostle Paul. Lingenfelter says, "To be the church is to become a covenant community...loving one another, committed to mutual trust, and obeying Jesus Christ in all that he taught about `following' and being his disciples" (101). All of this, one would think, would be common knowledge within the Christian community. However, my experiences have shown that it is not the case and the reality is that the Christian community has traveled light years away from a "Covenant Community."

Sherwood G. Lingenfelter goes into great detail about several other topics which fall into this "Covenant Community" like mentoring, empowering, teamwork, "power-giving leadership," risks and responsibilities as a leader and on and on. The several case studies that link with each topic are wonderful and help paint a clear picture of the lesions that Lingenfelter is trying to teach his readers and make the book a great read. I could not have been more pleased with his description of Thailand leadership, this is where I minister, and how spot on he was with the issues we personally face day to day. His writing is clear, straight to the point, Biblical, and quite enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone going into cross-culture work and because I believe this book also relates heavily to leadership in our home culture, anyone looking for guidance on Biblical leadership.

I don't usually write public book reviews and most certainly I have better things to do past midnight but I just had to log on and promote this book a FIVE stars. And I'm feeling a bit preachy about how encouraging this book is for me so bear with me...

Book is comprised of lessons from various oversea cross-cultural missions but these lessons don't necessarily have to be applied overseas or cross-cultural. In this day and age of globalization, it's really hard not to find ourselves in a silo environment. With each example or case study discussed, I reflected on my personal account when I worked overseas for an IT company and I wish I had read this prior to the trip.

Here are some powerful topics of wisdom:
o Power-Giving vs Power-Seeking relationships
o Risk of releasing control vs Gaining trust and faith
o Responsible-to vs Responsible-for behaviors
o Biblical "form" vs Biblical "leadership"
o Task oriented vs Covenant based teams

I am planning to read this again at a slower pace and reflect on its applications in my life today. Thank you!

Great perspective on an important topic

I agree with most of the comments of one of the other reviewers, particularly the difficulties with the authority of scripture (if one context cannot speak into another, how does God communicate?) Franke's answer seems to be through the Spirit but this doesn't seem to solve the problem of why the Spirit needs the Scripture at all. There is a lot of overlap between this book and "Beyond Foundationalism" by Franke and the late Stanley Grenz, sometimes almost verbatim overlap. I also agree Franke's critique does not have the depth of Vanhoozer (my personal favorite), Jamie Smith or Wesphal (all great authors to check out, by the way, if this book whets your appetite).

It spite of these weaknesses, the book is an excellent critique of modern foundationalism and its influence on the evangelical church. While it may be hard to find a "classic foundationalist" anywhere at all (and Franke's critique is of classical foundationalism and in that sense Franke is battling windmills instead of dragons, since most foundationalists are of the softer variety), he does make some strong points. Knowledge is transmitted from context to context, it seems to be impossible for it to be impartial. He also makes a strong point about evangelicals having a tendency to treat the Bible as "a collection of propositions" ready to be analyzed and from that analysis a collection of principles derived by which we live. It does seem as though there are other ways of communicating truth other than propositionally (for example narrative, poetry, metaphor) and that most communication of knowledge will somehow be tainted by the context from which it comes and the context to which it goes.

While I find this critique compelling, as was mentioned by the other reviewer, Franke's solution does seem weak. Basically, the Bible becomes the "norming norm" by which we judge all of our actions and we decipher the meaning of the Bible (coming from one context to another) through the Holy Spirit. While claiming Reformation thought as the inspiration for this solution, it does seem more like experientialism to me. First, why have the Bible at all, surely if the Holy Spirit is the only active element in knowing the truth of Scripture he could speak to us us as easily through Zane Grey or Superman Action comic #1. Franke fails to develop a reason that scripture is necessary. Second, the history of Protestantism is fragmentation based on varying interpretations of scripture and this view of Scripture would seem to promote further disintegration of the church rather than unity. Third, while distinct communities are healthy, I don't know if he proves that distinctly Christian communities are necessary. His view of orthodoxy is very broad but I wonder how difficult it would be, using his logic, to accept a distinctly non-Orthodox community as one that embodies truth and defines it within its own community. So if each individual community defines its own truth within its own context, why is a Christian community necessarily right while a non-Christian one not?

In spite of these caveats (and many more I haven't time to discuss), I still highly recommend this book. I think Franke raises issues that will be critical to the church in the coming decades and much of this thought mirrors that of the emerging church which is growing in influence. My advice is to read it critically and also, if your interest in piqued, take a look at some of the other authors mentioned earlier for a deeper look at these issues. You might also look at some of the works of Lindbeck (post-liberal) and Horton (reformed).

Provocative but ultimately unsatisfying

I found Franke’s book The Character of Theology to be a provocative but ultimately unsatisfying attempt to reconcile current linguistic and epistemological theory with evangelical Christian faith. Franke’s approach throughout the book is to lay out the position of nonfoundationalist philosophy, pointing out where that conflicts with the crypto-modernist approach to dogmatic theology practiced by evangelicalism. Unfortunately, he fails to provide a workable path forward, as his approach to the constitutive nature of evangelical identity is conflicted. He seems to identify with Roger Olson’s centered-set understanding (p. 36), but he then implies that even the center is not a fixed point, writing that “convictions and commitments, even the most long-standing, remain subject to ongoing scrutiny and the possibility of revision, reconstruction, or even rejection” (p. 78). Contradictorily, he backs off this view later, stating that a proper “reforming theology is not a matter of … ‘having everything open to revision all the time’” (p. 111). If all Franke is saying is that theological creeds are fallible, he is saying nothing more than the long-standing and foundationalist-compatible principle of semper reformanda; however, if he is arguing that even the theological center is uncertain and up for “revision” and “rejection,” he is proposing a much more radical program than is recognizable as evangelical. The latter position seems to be the necessary conclusion of Franke’s epistemological commitments; however, he seems conflicted over an evangelical identity he is unwilling to give up, forcing him to draw a forced and uneasy alliance between the two. It may in fact be possible to reconcile the linguistic turn with a historically consonant faith formulation, but Franke does not provide it.

Amazing book

John's latest book, strikes out from where that text left off, although John suggests it is more of a prequel, and it is much easier to read. It's slim at 200 pages, and set to become another key text for people wanting to understand theology in a post-modern context.

What I love about the book, is that John put's himself into it, theology is part of his journey and story, this is not esoteric academics, but someone who has been trying to make sense of his own questions and those of his students in the real world.

So if like John you value your evangelical heritage, appreciate the process the reformers undertook, and want to engage meaningfully with our post-modern context, this is the book for that. I love John's sub title, for the book, 'A Post-conservative evangelical approach'.

A Classic Sailing Story for All Time

It is awesome to read what Joshua Slocum did. His achievement should be celebrated forever. His writing style is not particularly good but the content of the story is unique. All cruising sailors should read this book. Slocum clearly was an outstanding navigator and all around sailor. The section of the book on his adventures going around Cape Horn dealing with the weather, currents, and natives is particularly exciting. This is a story waiting for a Hollywood movie or, even better, a long running TV series.

One of the great sailing books

In today's era of stainless steel, Dacron and electronics, we can lose sight of what real sailing is. This is a readable story of the first person to sail alone around the world. Using a one dollar wind-up clock and a ton of skill, this old sailor circumnavigates the globe and spins some yarns that take us away from the world of new technology to a simpler time. A great read.

A must read for everyone. Truly one of the great classics on sailing single handed around the world. And this was during the turn of the last century. Hearing about the ports and native people over 100 years ago, is living history. A must for every sailors library. One of the all time bests. If you pick one book to read about sailing, start here. People will be reading this for a thousand years. Our American Ulyses.

not what I expected

This was not what I expected when I purchased a book of lists. I expected lists I could make copies of and use as a checklist when doing things as a mom. There are very few of those in this book. A better title for the book might be: Things to know during the first years of being a mom. I already have several of that kind of book and wasn't looking for another one. I am considering returning the book if I could find the time to repackage it and send it back.

Some thoughts about lists....

I can't say that I agree 100% with this book (I have some strong reservations), but there's a lot of great stuff in it. Michelle Larowe put together a book of 112 lists of things that are useful for a mom, caregiver, or mom to be of a 0-5 year old. This is a Christian book. There are several lists that are particularly helpful for moms working outside of their homes. But, I think every mom of a young child will find something helpful in this book.

All that being said, this is a book that you will find yourself agreeing with sometimes and disagreeing with at others. The author is a certified international nanny so she has great ideas for toys and what to do with kids and ideas about teaching sharing. Her list about discipline is a starting point, but not a complete solution. I think all the moms I know would agree that discipline is never a one size fits all kind of thing. I remember thinking when I had one child that I knew what to do--and then my second came along, and then my third... and God humbled me very quickly. Her list makes it sound like discipline is a one size fits all thing and I just don't agree with that. She is approaching this book as a nanny and mother of one child.

I agreed with her book lists for children and for adults about parenting. I would add one more, though and that is Super Baby Food--this is the best book about what to feed your 0-12 month old and when. My other favorite lists were what to pray for your child before they're born, ten practical Christian principles to teach your Christian preschooler, Age Appropriate Chores for Young Children, and a few others. I also thought her list about considering Adoption very wise.

Yet, her list about family friendly movies isn't one I agree with. My oldest child is 6 and I wouldn't be able to show her any of the movies on the list. I think we have to be really careful to be sensitive about what our children can handle. The themes addressed in the movie Fireproof (a movie she includes in her list) are really for adults--not children and I wouldn't even say for tweens or preteens.

There is one more thing that I want to mention it in case you do read this book. There is a list entitled "Selecting a Family Friendly Church". I believe that we are all called to go to church and worship the Lord-- and that it is about God, not about us. The questions are supposed to help you decide whether a church is family-friendly. But, is that why you go to church? For what it does for you and your kids? I wish that instead there had been a list of qualities to look for in a church and what to pray for in your search for a church home. Perhaps it could have been a list of open ended questions like...
1) Do you want to go to a church which practices family worship or one with separate children's church?
2) What do you feel God is calling you to do in this matter?
3) Does the congregation have grace for you and for your children?
4) Will the church love you and your family?
5) Can you love the people in the church? Will you be able to serve in the church?

The other thing I'd mention is really just a minor one. She writes this book from an upper-middle class perspective. Most of the time that isn't really important. But, it is relevant to the lists of what you need for your child's first year. It made me chuckle when she wrote "high-quality wipes" as one of the items you need.

So, in the end, how would I describe this book? As a great gift for a friend who just discovered they're pregnant (along with a copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting). Honestly, no parenting/childbirth preparation book is perfect and has everything you're looking for. If you're looking for a book for yourself, I'd recommend checking it out from the library, but not purchasing it for your home library.

"You Were Born For More" by Harry Jackson is a good title for anyone needing encouragement in their difficult situation. The pastor writes from his own personal struggles (health, ministry, financial, etc.) and suggests 6 steps we can take to overcome our challenges:

1. Having a humble spirit - be thankful for who God is and realize that apart from Him, we have no hope.
2. Trusting God - He is God and can be trusted to help us persevere.
3. Show God's love to others - display the love that God has shown you to other people for His glory. It's all about Him!
4. Endure in adversity - God gives us His strength and life to give us what we need to persevere.
5. Remain faithful to God even in uncertain times - God can be trusted. Remember His past faithfulness to give you a present and future hope.
6. Commit to purity - no matter what happens commit be pure to God (make Him the priority in your life, let Him help you live a pure life pleasing to Him).

These are just some highlights for each area - you will need to read the book for more details.

Title Says It All - You were Born for MORE

In a world where many are lost, wondering, and searching for something - knowing you were born for more than "just this " is such a powerful message that so many need to read. I love what Bishop says in the book - "The power to break through your problems and realms of blessing is within reach- but it requires an open and honest relationship between you and God." So- get honest! I have been saved for 27 years, but the reminder that I was born for more never gets old. Just when we think we've got it - God takes us deeper. He takes us closer to Him, but it is a relationship that works both ways.

When facing tough circumstances, knowing that I was serving Jesus Christ and operating in exactly what He called me to do made those rough moments, smooth. Not perfect - but smooth. My relationship with God is what is made the difference. I knew I was born for more. Bishop Jackson's life testifies to exactly what he has written. This is a MUST READ for anyone who is searching for more. Why? Because you were born for it!!!!!

This is not a book of theories or opinions. It is rooted and grounded in the real experience of a pastor and his congregation and the believers in that city. It is an easy-to-follow primer, peppered with Pastor Beckett's personal and congregational experiences germane thereto. Beckett is on the forfront of spiritual mapping.

Beckett's book, "Commitment to Conqour," pictures ministry not just in the local church but in the whole community. He challenges the reader through personal example how to positively attack spiritual strongholds. The church he serves and founded, The Dwelling Place, demonstrates the best of evangelical desire and congregational focus. Together, they confront the principalities and powers and see the victory of the Holy Spirit over demonic activity.
Beckett illustrates well how to unify pastors and churches to take one's city for God. We are not in a battle by ourselves but in a battle for Jesus Christ, a battle ultimately to be won by God Himself. By uniting 30 pastors together, they come together in agreement with God and claim the land.
Clearly, this is a must read for anyone who wants to take their city for God. Beckett's excellent teaching skills shine in this book.
