Trip the Light fantastic

Rhonda Rhea is a gifted writer that takes the reader's soul on a fantastic walk towards the divine. She is light-hearted, yet beautifully deep. I would strongly recommend her book to anyone wanting to get a contemporary view of how to bring God into their everyday life.

Not wearin' high heels, but love reading about them!

I love Rhonda's new book "High Heels in High Place"! I really don't wear high heels now that I'm 45 year old, but I love reading about them. Of course it's not all about shoes it's all about our relationship with Jesus Christ. On page 23 I underlined "it's all about being filled up with Jesus! It's about having a testimony of the power of God at work in a life." This book has made me laugh my "shoes" off and check my walk with Christ at the same time. Oh yea, and I did notice there's a discussion guide in the back. Way to go Rhonda!

Are you a fashion diva who has a special place in your heart for shoes, but also a special place in your heart for the Lord? Do you want to find a great way to connect with God while reading a book that helps you understand, in terms you can relate to? High Heels is for you! Divided into several parts (with 4 chapters in each part), this book can be read straight through or used as a daily (or weekly) devotional book.

Rhea uses fantastic analogies regarding shoes and spiritual issues...it's hard not to laugh at her `shoe' humor! But one really great thing that Rhea does with this book is start you out small, with small doses of spirituality, and she slowly leads you into greater and deeper subjects. Then before you know it, you're experiencing a deep relationship with the Lord that you never knew was possible.

While reading this book, it was hard for me to read it straight through...I had to read it in portions in order to digest all of the information that was laid out before me. It sort of got overwhelming if I tried to read too much at one time, but if I read in bits and chunks, it was much easier to understand.

Since I'm not a shoe fanatic, however, the constant shoe analogy kind of got annoying after a bit. I could handle some, but too much of a good thing is simply too much. However, I can easily see how this book would be a great addition to a personal bookshelf in order to pull out and use for women's group devotionals.

I believe a large group could really benefit from this angle of spiritual insight.

A thought provoking and insightful read!

I was recommended to read this book as my mum has started to suffer from mild arthritis and i wanted to know what was available aside from the usual Western Medicine. I work in healthcare within the NHS (although I am not a Medical Doctor) and from what i have learnt since my mothers troubles it seems symptomatic relief is really all that is available. This book is an eye opener with clearly laid out sections to guide the reader into the details of what is possible. I would suggest his book for those new with the condition and their loved ones as well as those veterans who are managing as well as they can with what western medicine has to offer.

Great Book on Preaching OT

This is a great book for preachers, providing a homiletics refresher as veteran bible scholar and preacher Kaiser walks through the study and preaching of 10 Old Testament texts. Beyond simply giving help for these 10 passages, Kaiser models the preaching of the OT with a concentration on the character of God. He is particularly concerned with the need for us to be teaching our people about the greatness of God.

Good Stuff

This book is a collection of ten messages from the OT related to God's majesty. But more than that, it is a series of helps on how to study and preach these passages. Kaiser does a great job of exegeting the passages, bringing in historical data, and systematizing the information. The messages thoroughly honor God and, as such, make great devotional reading as well.

I have read your book more than once and it's a great book, but most importantly

I was truly blessed to hear your story first hand at my Rosewood Foundation, Inc., shcolarship banquet. The room was on dead silent as you shared your unbelievable experience during 9/11. When I first met you, September 2015, my first question was, "How did you escape the tragedy unharmed?" Your answer was, "God!" I appreciate the answer because many more became victims, not as blessed as you. It's a lesson in itself to be able to write your story, Between HEAVEN and Ground ZERO. I have read your book more than once and it's a great book, but most importantly, was your personal verbal one on one story from you to us. God spared you to do His work. You may not have realized it yet, but it's in your profile. Thank God for your ability to share your life preserving so amazingly. Friends FOREVER!

Took my breath away.

The author shares her harrowing experience of surviving the 9-11 attack and escaping from more than 30 stories. Her excellent descriptions helped we walk with her as she encouraged herself and others through this horrific experience.

She has come away changed in spirit and body and shares her faith experiences that have made it possible for her to proceed with her life as a "life of service".

I never saw the "twins" as she called them, but her vivid descriptions make me want to find a large coffee table book filled with photos so I can experience what WAS.

I honestly think I will read it through again. It's my only way of summoning tears for those who suffered and still suffer.

The logic of empirical inference is summarized by the relationship: assumptions + data conclusions. Data alone do not suffice to draw conclusions. Inference requires assumptions that relate the data to the population of interest ... Holding fixed the available data, and presuming avoidance of errors in logic, stronger assumptions yield stronger conclusions. At the extreme, one may achieve certitude by posing sufficiently strong assumptions. [However, ] the credibility of inference decreases with the strength of the assumptions maintained ... Researchers regularly express certitude about the consequences of alternative [policy] decisions. Exact predictions of outcomes are common, and expressions of uncertainty are rare. This is a book that all policy oriented economists would want to read, even if it weren't so much fun!

Manski writes with great wit and humor about the limits to what empirical work can tell us concerning what we think we know about economics. Using a remarkably wide range of real examples drawn from ongoing policy debates, Manski shows how empirically unsupported modeling choices can create a false sense of support from the data (and Manski pulls no punches in naming names and calling out what he shows to be poor practice). This book will certainly change how I think about and teach such topics as the effects of tax increases on labor supply. The most remarkable aspect of this book is how it lays out such serious critiques without relying on mathematics or even specialized technical vocabulary. Instead, this is a book written for the intelligent person who wants to know what to believe amid all the strong claims that are made about what the data show. This is a book that every empirical economist should read, and will make a fine complement from which to draw examples in any policy oriented class.

Rewards of Simplicity review

I cringe. Simplicity. This must mean that I will have to weed out my closets and throw stuff out. I am so not into that. I open the tasteful cover that is decorated with scrumptious looking cherries and begin to read. To my surprise, the authors begin with a spiritual approach to simplicity and their journey towards it is inspiring. I begin to think that maybe I can indeed do this "simplicity" thing. About sixteen pages into the text I come to a realization. I am going to need a lot more post-it tags for the pages.
This book challenged me to think about the life I live now and what might get in the way of my ability to live for Christ. Instead of encouraging you to clean out your house and get it just so and then pursue the spiritual side of life, the authors encourage you to focus on the simplicity of your relationship with God and then let your experiences there pour into your life and spurn you on to live a life that reflects your spiritual simplicity.
This book is very well-organized. It is split into two major sections. The first is written by Pam and focuses on practical and spiritual simplicity while the second is written by Chuck and regards simplifying life by overcoming anxiety. I don't know which section benefitted me more--the first or the second. I have over thirty post-it tags throughout this book. This book is encouraging and empowering and is in no way judgmental or demeaning. It is a gentle nudge in a direction which can be quite beneficial to every Christian.

Wonderful simple way to simplify

Normally I don't enjoy books that talk about simplifying or how to rid myself of unnecessary things in my life but I wanted to see what the authors had to say. I'm glad I did! I really think this was God's way of telling me I needed to rethink all the things I've been accumulating and start simplifying my life. God talks to us all but sometimes we ignore Him because we don't want to hear what He has to say, even if it would make our lives better!

Reading this book was fun and easy and gave me lots of ideas on how to reduce my clutter - and I don't have to get rid of everything, however I can if I want. I really enjoyed the fasting chapter (such as fasting for a time from internet or if that is too much then fasting from Facebook) and the money and possessions chapter both spoke to me. I think this is God's way of paving a path for me to be more simple. A good thing since I enjoy learning about the Anabaptist way of life but have no way to convert (that was sort of a joke).

Overall, I do recommend this book who want to learn more about simplifying from a Christian perspective but need to do it slowly so as not to totally overwhelm themselves. When a Christian looks at something from a Biblical standpoint I think it can make it easier to implement and that is the way with this book. The authors talk simply, not simple as in they think we won't understand, but simply in that they don't want to make it a burden to simplify our lives.

Simple living made easy

Simplicity? This is a serious word. So many people get on their soapbox about this subject that it takes on a totally different meaning.
This book has a unique approach.
The authors put a great deal of focus on God's word and what it means to be simple people. Why do we need all this stuff? Why do we do this to ourselves? What does the Word say about stress and making decisions and weeding out what doesn't produce in our lives.
What a challenge each chapter is. It's almost enough for a Bible study group to go through. What a fun idea!
We are making decisions all day long some that are unimportant and some that are life altering. How can we simplify this process?
This book has a great amount of meat to it. This would be a great gift for a pastor or just for a lay person who needs a shift in their life.
This book has such an encouraging way about it. There is no judgment just a hope for the future, simply said.

About the Author
Mingmei Yip began writing and painting during her childhood in Hong Kong. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) and has studied the traditional Chinese arts of Tai Chi, Qin music, Buddhist sacred chant and calligraphy. Mingmei has collaborated with Carnegie Hall and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is the author of the popular Chinese Children's Favorite Stories and four novels: Skeleton Women, Peach Blossom Pavilion, Petals from the Sky and Song of the Silk Road. She lives in New York City.

Who wouldn't want to visit Grandma Panda!

As an educator, I was taught that one of the best ways for a child to learn about another culture is through that nation's folk and fairy tales. If you would like your child to get an introduction into Chinese heritage a wonderful place to start is with the book, "Grandma Panda's China Storybook." With it's appealing and colorful illustrations the book is comprised of bits of wisdom that Grandma Panda shares with little Baobao and Lingling. Grandma is so full of love and kindness for these little ones that I found myself wishing I could go visit her for a summer. The book starts off with a feast, a Dim Sum feast. Read the story to find out why "Dim Sum" means "heart toucher." The story that explains Chinese writing does so in such an accessible way that it will help a young learner understand Chinese characters. Yip has included the story of the "Brave Woman Warrior," Mulan. What an inspiring story for girls. The story called, "The Pained Faces of Chinese Opera" gives an introduction as to why the masks in Chinese opera are so vividly painted.
What a nice introduction to an ancient land, full of such rich history. These stories could be read aloud to little ones or they're just perfect for a child in elementary school who has learned to read. Each story offers just the right amount of history to provide a good talking point, whether in a classroom or around the dining room table.
And speaking of the dining room table, my mouth is watering for some Dim Sum.

Interesting stories, great pictures

I bought this for my friends' kids and they love the colorful pictures. The stories are also of a good length so they not exhaust the kids' attention span.

Wonderful book!!

We won this book through Miss Panda blog. My four and two year old boys love it! I love it too!. The illustrations are bright and the stories are short enough to read them all each time they grab the book. I act them out in Spanish and you can use a panda bear to make it more fun. The book shows parts of Chinese culture that I have not seen in other books (and I have many!). The stories are about food, kung fu, Mulan, dragons, chinese opera, calligraphy.. very engaging!! We are learning Mandarin at home and this book gives us ideas for learning about Chinese culture. We have practiced the Kung fu posses already and we are about to learn about Chinese opera soon. Yes! they wanted to paint their faces! Great book!!

The story was fantastic!

On Distant Shores is only the second book I've read by Sarah Sundin (the first being With Every Letter), so I was surprised (and a little confused - at first) that this story didn't pick up where book one ended. Instead, it went back in time a little bit and showed the last part of With Every Letter from Georgie's perspective and then continued on from there. I actually really liked this - it was cool to get Georgie's take on certain things. :)

I really loved the characters in On Distant Shores. I loved how Georgie and John had struggles and issues they had to work on. They felt very real and I couldn't help but care about them.

The story was fantastic! There were ups and downs and a lot of surprises - I definitely didn't see certain things coming! I loved the military aspect and all the history in On Distant Shores.

Overall, On Distant Shores was a great read. I enjoyed it even more than With Every Letter (which I really liked). I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read Kay's story, In Perfect Time, when it releases.

Another fantastic WWII story from Sarah Sundin!

Another fantastic WWII story from Sarah Sundin!

Georgie was a highlight in With Every Letter and I couldn't wait to learn more about her. I love her kind heart. Without it, she and Rose would have missed out on a great friendship with Mellie, who we met in the first book. Though she'd let other people make decisions for her all her life, Georgie found herself ready for a change.

There was a little overlap between the first and this one, but a very minor one at that, and it didn't affect Georgie's story at all. As always, Sundin's writing is excellent and smooth. The journeys she put these characters on were not easy. However, on the flip side, our journey isn't either. Watching Georgie and Hutch grow through the course of the story felt like the most natural thing. Nothing happened too fast or too slow.

It was effortless to get lost in the era and world Georgie and Hutch found themselves in. I love the WWII era. The relationships, the faith, the common hope for a better future. One of my favorite scenes is set on Christmas day with Georgie on a flight. She led the men in carols and Christmas cheer, despite the war going on around them. You don't see or hear things like that any more. The scene is a highlight for me. Speaking of highlights I'll note real quick that Lucia is a big one. I hope we see her again! She was absolutely adorable!

Previous fans of Sundin's work will not be disappointed by her latest release. I loved following Georgie and Hutch through their struggles and I loved diving into their worlds for a time. I look forward to getting to know Kay better in the next book. Perhaps I'll finally have my questions answered.

Courage and Trust in World War II

On Distant Shores picks up the history of the 802nd WW2 flight nurses with the life of Lt. George Taylor. As World War II continues, George learns two things about herself - the first, as the youngest, pampered daughter of a Southern family, she's never had to make decisions for herself. Even the decision to join the flight nurses was just following her lifetime best friend, tomboy Kay, into the program. The other thing George learns is that she's terrified, and when an emergency comes, she freezes. So the voices of family and fiancé saying "come home where you belong" are very loud. Along the way, she makes friends with John Hutchinson "Hutch", a pharmacist, who is also finding the way hard due to the lack of professional respect for his trade in the army. Though they both have a loved one waiting at home, these two believe it will be okay to be friends and encourage each other to grow. Ultimately, they are both learning the lesson that God's is the voice they should listen to, and His plans, not their own, are best.

In this second story of the series, the landscape changes from Northern Africa to Italy, taking the non-combatants closer to the war front and danger. Readers experience vicariously the enemy bombings of Red Cross tents, the irony of enjoying a party on the beach and visiting historic sites sandwiched between frantic efforts to save lives. Throughout the book, the deepening faith and spiritual growth of Georgie and Hutch remains an important focus. War II aficionados and those who just like a good story will enjoy this apparently accurate portrayal of day to day life for the medical personnel in Italy's war zones.

Sarah Sundin is an extremely good storyteller who has obviously researched well. On Distant Shores is a gripping novel that held my attention too long past my bedtime! I couldn't put the book down with only a few chapters to go. Although I'd definitely recommend that you read With Every Letter, this book would still be good as a stand-alone story.

Steve Scott is founder of On Target Outfitters, a youth mentoring ministry that uses hunting and shooting sports to instill confidence, ethics, values, and faith into a young adult's life. He has a BA in Bible and theology, an MA in theological studies, and an MA in children and family ministry. Steve is also an NRA Certified Instructor for Rifle, Shotgun, and Pistol, an NASP Certified Archery Instructor, and an Ohio Hunter Education Instructor.

About the Author

Excellent devotional for a follower of Christ who also enjoys hunting and fishing!

I have thoroughly enjoyed waking up, brewing my morning coffee, and sitting down with Faith Afield. The book was exactly what I was looking for: God-centered truths weaved throughout the author's experiences in the field. I read a chapter every morning and was rewarded for doing so.
I will be purchasing the paperback as gifts for my family and friends who enjoy hunting!

After the first week of reading this devotional with my daughter, I bought six more copies to give as gifts. The author brings his passion for creation & sport together with insightful, spiritual truth for quick, daily inspiration. There is nothing like starting each day with a reminder of what really matters. You're going to want to share Faith Afield with the sportsmen in your life.

Great read

A friend of mine and I just did a 9-week devotional email exchange on the book. We read 10 chapters each week and would share our thoughts on a weekend snowshoe hike or golf round. Highly recommend for even the casual outdoorsman!
