About the Author
LOIS D. KNUTSON, MDiv, is a caregiver for her mother and has been a pastor for 25 years. She has also been a nursing home and hospital chaplain, including the Mayo Clinic hospitals. She completed the Geriatric Pastoral Care Institute at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a nationally sought-after speaker on older adult ministry. Lois was also featured in the PBS documentary And Thou Shalt Honor, which covered the subject of caregiving. She lives in the upper Midwest.

Hands-on Guidebook for Caregiving

In "Compassionate Caregiving" author Lois D. Knutson offers workable solutions, tips, encouragement, and invaluable information important to family caregivers. Sensitive to the spiritual nature and call of caregiving, Lois includes a scripture passage and prayer within each chapter specifically related to the material covered. I found the suggested affirmations, one for each day of the month, to be especially valuable for spiritual encouragement and keeping a perspective on personal self worth.

Knutson includes guidelines for nurture, both spiritual and psychological, as well has practical issues like equipment needed in the home, celebrating holidays, evaluating nursing homes, assisted-living, and other caregiving facilities.

Lois has given me insight into caregiving as a spiritual calling. Readers will find the chapters on how to deal with the death of a loved one important, comforting, and compassionate.

A comprehensive appendix is filled with forms, a spiritual journey exercise, suggested Bible passages for caregivers, and a list of helpful web sites. The end notes listed by chapter give evidence of thorough, well documented, research. Lois Knutson, herself a caregiver, has served as a hospital chaplain, is trained in geriatric pastoral care, and is a national speaker on older adult ministry.

She has been there.

I have been a caretaker for two wives and know that I am better prepared with outside input from those who have lived the life. It is a very demanding life since you live the life of the one you care for and have little time for yourself. This author has some very good advice. But no one person can cover all the bases because every personality both caregiver and patient are different. A good friend recommended this book to me, he has been a caretaker for 13 years so what he suggests I read. Lois introduces the spiritual side of caregiving.

Heidi A. Campbell (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is assistant professor of communication at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She is the author of Exploring Religious Community Online and has written numerous articles and encyclopedia entries. Heather Looy (PhD, McMaster University) is professor of psychology at The King's University College in Alberta, Canada. She specializes in biopsychology and is an active researcher and writer. Both Campbell and Looy participated in the Sir John Templeton Oxford Seminars in Science and Christianity.

A quality resource which does its job well

As a "science and religion primer," this book aims to provide terminological definitions and introductory conceptual background for people who are interested in the interaction between science and religion. The book generally fulfills this aim, though the title is a bit misleading because "religion" here really means a fairly generic version of Christianity, with very little attention given to other religions.

Since this publisher is new to me, I did a little digging and found that "Baker Academic serves the academy and the church by publishing works that further the pursuit of knowledge and understanding within the context of Christian faith." This alerted me to the possibility of the book having a pro-Christian bias which would compromise its usefulness, so I was on the lookout for that, but I was pleased to find that the book is reasonably fair and objective. In fact, after reading the book cover to cover, it becomes apparent that there's quite a bit of controversy and confusion within Christianity itself, which thus weakens the Christian position. Another main conclusion is that the interaction between science and religion is a fertile territory to explore the big questions, and no form of dogmatism (scientism, religious fundamentalism, etc.) is appropriate here.

In terms of the format, the book consists of a short introduction, four short general essays on the science/religion interaction, and then the bulk of the book is ~90 entries dealing with topics such as altruism, Francis Bacon, causation, Charles Darwin, ecofeminism, fideism, Galileo, handmaiden metaphor, idealism, kenosis, laws of nature, materialism, naturalism, ontology, William Paley, quantum theory, realism, science, technology, and the verification principle. Each entry is about two pages and consists of a general discussion, bullet points on key points/challenges, and annotated suggestions for further reading. Despite being short, the entries still pack in a good amount of content because they're written concisely and at a fairly high level, though of course many of the entries will still leave you wanting more. The entries appear to be all written by different contributors, so the quality inevitably varies somewhat, but the overall quality is high and the editors have done their job well.

I recommend this book to people seeking a primer on the science/religion interaction, with two caveats: (a) don't expect much specific treatment of religions other than Christianity and (b) since the book is written at a fairly high level, the target audience is people with a serious interest in the topic rather than the general reader. And for people who have such a serious interest, the book may be a good choice even if you're well past the point of needing a primer.

A good reference

The Science-Religion Dialog is an increasingly popular topic today. It is not the shrill denunciation of everything religious that Richard Dawkins enunciates in The God Delusion, or the pathetic nonsense of biblical literalism, but rather the intellectually-defensible view that religion and science each have something to offer, but in different domains. Science deals with observable facts and their theoretical interpretation, while religion examines meaning and moral value. Stephen Jay Gould even went so far as to formulate the doctrine of Non-Overlapping Magisteria (from the Latin for teacher) to emphasize the separation. Alain de Botton (Religion for Atheists) points out that many of the ideas and values of religion (education, community, ethics, art) import into the secular world independently of any commitment to a divine presence.
That said, science and religion in the contemporary era have much to offer each other. Cosmology has many definite findings (as well as some highly speculative ideas) about our universe: its finite age, for example. Readers with an interest in this dialog will find the A Science and Religion Primer a handy reference for identifying topics of scholarly debate and outlining the history of the rationalist analysis of ideas which originated in revealed religion.

Ambrose has such an interesting mind. When he talks it's as if he's painting the circles on a target, beginning at the outer ones. "If I had to give you one piece of advice it would be this: Don't look for sudden enlightenment. People call them ah-ha moments; don't worry about those. I know that you may feel your time is wasted here if you haven't had enough ah-has, but I assure you it won't be."

"So what should I be doing?" I asked him, feeling confused.

"When you finally quiet down enough you'll begin to hear the divine voice.

"Don't walk around looking for moments of enlightened insight," Ambrose continued. "For one thing, we're not that smart!" He laughed. "Instead, you should walk around praying. Sit in the church before dawn, praying. Or just shut your mouth for a few days. Listen to the talks given by the retreat master, if you like. Just sit. Try your best to stop thinking."

It sounded too easy to me. I told him that.

"What I'm suggesting is much harder than you might think. You'll see."

Protestant author Jon Sweeney (Almost Catholic) reports on more than 20 years of conversations he's had with monks in Massachusetts, Kentucky and Georgia. In his search for God, he encountered Trappist monk M. Basil Pennington and a number of other memorable characters who were eager to share their decades of cloistered experience with him. As a non-Catholic layman, Sweeney asks pointed questions about many aspects of monastic spirituality and elicits warm reflections on abbey life. Background information on Cistercian and Benedictine orders and quotes from such writers as Thomas Merton, Graham Greene, Evelyn Underhill and George Herbert provide a counterpoint to the voices of a fast-disappearing generation of contemplatives. While the dialogues are vivid, Sweeney's account of his own faith task of incorporating the monks' wisdom is too sketchy to be satisfying, and he offers little information about the directions his life has taken as a result. Adding to the monks changed my life genre is tricky, especially given the height of the bar set by Kathleen Norris's remarkable Cloister Walk. Less reticence, better writing and deeper insight would have strengthened Sweeney's endeavor to distill experiences that were clearly significant to him. (May)

Leisurely Memoir of Pondering Life with Monks

Jon Sweeney captures the poetic and practical nature of the monastic life in his segmented memoir Cloister Talks: Learning from My Friends the Monks. Sweeney invites on a journey of mutual discovery, recording his conversations with monks over several years and how his own spiritual journey was shaped by the monks' advice.

Contrary to most opinions of the monastic life, the monks Sweeney befriends and entrusts as his spiritual advisers are practical, fun-loving, and astonishingly normal people. Monks do not view themselves as spiritually superior even if we sometimes do. Instead, monks view themselves as completing the vocation God has called them to.

God's calling is the most integral part of the monastic life. As one monk relates, only God's grace would ever enable a person to live the monastic life. It is not the "normal" life. Neither is it better than the normal life. Instead, it is viewed as a unique vocation God calls a select few into. God calls others into a variety of vocations as well.

The discovery of vocation and the experience of God's true calling in each person's life is what the monks' advice boils down to: walk the path God is showing you, be humble, be silent, enjoy life, and delight in God. This is what monks do, and this is what those beyond the bounds of the monastery should do as well.

The monastic life is not all spiritual ecstasy and enlightenment. There is a great deal of insecurity, frustration, and darkness as well. The monks are just like us. They have doubts and depression. They hurt and become sick. They travel and love. But their love is attuned fully to God and their brothers in a way that is far different than those beyond the monastery that have families and live in church communities. This difference is what makes the monastic life so special and so different. It is utter simplicity in our hectic world.

Even so, the monks never call for us to flee for the hills and live the hermit's life. Instead, we must find our own simplicity and devotion, walking our own pilgrimage before God in a way that finds wonder in silence, love, life, and play.

This book might disappoint those who are seeking monastic advise as a wondrous salve that will cure all their secular and worldly frustrations. The monks have advice for your frustrations, but they have their own in the monastery as well. The monastery is not a safe spiritual place. It is a place where people are stretched in their service before God, and this can lead to trying places.

I recommend this book instead to those that want to take a leisurely stroll through the teachings of monks filtered through the lens of one man's spiritual journey. There is really no beginning and not much ending, just a snapshot of a person on the Way being helped by the counsel of dear friends and spiritual advisors.

Solid Introductory Biographies

This book offers fifty short biographical sketches of Christian figures of varying importance, ranging from Katherine von Bora to A.W. Tozer and had its genesis in magazine articles in Moody Monthly and The Good News Broadcaster. It combines two previous books, Living with the Giants and Victorious Christians. As a collection of short biographies it does with excellence exactly what is sets out to do--provide a mere introduction to important Christian figures. There is am emphasis on figures in some way related to Moody, but this hardly detracts from it. It's an excellent choice to read just a few pages at a time.

A delightful and faith-building book

A. W. Tozer once rightly said, "Next to the Holy Scriptures, the greatest aid to the life of faith may be Christian biographies." Can I supplement this by saying that next to a good Christian biography, the next most helpful aid is a series of brief biographical sketches.

That is what Warren Wiersbe has provided us with here: a set of short yet inspiring and helpful mini-biographies of fifty great saints of God from the past few centuries. It is a great collection of articles about a number of leading Christian evangelists, pastors and preachers.

Some of those featured here include F. B. Meyer, Charles H. Spurgeon, G. Campbell Morgan, D. L. Moody, A. W. Tozer, Fanny Crosby, Oswald Chambers, Amy Carmichael, Jonathan Edwards, James Hudson Taylor, George Whitefield, and R. A. Torrey.

The majority of these figures are Protestant pastors and preachers of the last two centuries. Thus not too many Catholics or women are found here, but there are some of each. The selection of course reflects the ministry of Wiersbe - he is a pastor, preacher and writer who for many years was pastor of Moody Church in Chicago.

He has written numerous books on preaching, and has edited a series of books on great sermons. The 50 biographical sketches offered here first appeared in several Christian magazines. They are arranged by birth date, so Katherine von Bora (b. 1499 - the wife of Martin Luther) is the first, while William Culbertson (b. 1905) is the last.

Reading them in sequences is valuable for various reasons. One can clearly note the way in which one person had a marked influence on others. Indeed, many of those featured here worked with or supported the ministry of others also found in this collection.

Some common themes emerge as one reads all fifty stories. For example, it is interesting to note how many of these great leaders struggled with depression, were filled with self-doubt, or had a low view of their own ministry and success. Many were lonely, and some were tempted to give it all away at times.

One can also see the very important role that reading played in the lives of so many of these spiritual giants. It is a well-known truth that leaders are readers. Many of those mentioned here had a deep love for books, reading, study and theology. Spurgeon of course had a library of some twelve thousand volumes.

Or consider the great Scottish preacher W. Robertson Nicoll (1851-1923). "He read an average of two books a day and edited a weekly journal, three monthly magazines, and a steady stream of scholarly books." Indeed, "he managed to write over forty books of his own, and compile, edit, or supervise the publication of over 250 more titles."

One often gets a laugh out of some of these figures. Wiersbe informs us that during the winter months in Scotland, Nicoll was basically confined to his home and his books. Nicoll later said, "I always look back with pleasure to my three months each winter there, when I was a prisoner alone with my cat and my books."

At least he was not married at the time. But he could say this at a time when he was married, while in England: "I feel rather lonely and depressed here away from my books." Says Wiersbe, "His books and his cats and his publications were his life". He tells us that "Nicoll's library contained twenty-five thousand volumes, including five thousand biographies! `I have for years read every biography I could lay my hands on, and not one has failed to teach me something,' he wrote."

Of course a major theme found throughout these mini-biographies is the importance of holiness, the deeper life, total commitment to Christ, and the need for personal sanctification. The many quotes along these lines which Wiersbe presents are alone worth the price of the book. Here are a few choice nuggets:

"It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likenesses to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God." (Robert Murray McCheyne)

"The work will never go deeper than we have gone ourselves." (Amy Carmichael)

"You can never give another person that which you have found, but you can make him homesick for what you have." (Oswald Chambers)

"Preaching that costs nothing accomplishes nothing." (John Henry Jowett)

"All the calls of the gospel are calls to hardship, to sacrifice, to battle. Christ would have no man follow him under the delusion that he was going to have an easy time of it." (Welsh preacher J. D. Jones)

"Power for service is second; power for holiness and character is first. The first, second, and third requisite for our work is personal godliness." (Alexander Maclaren)

There is just an enormous amount of helpful and encouraging information here. We can always learn so much - and grow so much - when we study the lives of great men and women who have gone before. As we do, we see that total dedication and obedience to Christ is really the only secret of Christian success.

There are no magic bullets here; no quick fixes to spirituality. Only the old and true methods will do: dying to self, taking up our cross, and serving others, just as our Lord had demonstrated. As Wiersbe rightly notes, "Far too many Christians are scurrying around looking for special meetings, thinking that extraordinary experiences will make them better Christians."

As you move though this book your appetite should be whetted for more. And Wiersbe does not disappoint - he provides plenty of recommendations for further reading for each of these fifty saints. He mentions numerous books both by and about these great men and women of God.

This book is simply a delight to read. It is a tremendous faith-builder and a spiritual eye-opener. It helps to set the bar higher, so we are not content to settle for second best. When we get a glimpse of some of these radiant, Christ-centred lives, we will no longer want to embrace mediocrity, but move on to the very best we can have, and be, in Christ.

a worthy read

50 People Every Christian Should Know: Learning from Spiritual Giants of the Faith, by Warren Wiersbe, a former pastor of Moody Church and a prolific author of over 150 books. The six or so pages devoted to each person was perfect length for reading prior to going to sleep, something I regularly did. A few of the entries are worth the entire price of the book, each providing a wonderful resource for further reading. If either in want of a thumbnail sketch of one of the `50' or in need of knowing what are some of the good biographies written about them, I would start with this book.

Since the book's subtitle invites the reader to "learn from Spiritual Giants", I would have enjoyed Wiersbe digging a bit deeper into their struggles and how they overcame them, their overarching ministerial ethos, . . . Warren's writing is a bit simplistic and not as penetrating a character study as I would have liked. For example, Spurgeon's consistent bouts with depression is never mentioned, but a descent purview of his life is. Further, most of the stories are repetitious in style--a logistical, factual recounting of the person's upbringing, the books they wrote, the ministries they oversaw, etc. Each entry feels like it was churned out rather than steeped, a part of 150 books written rather than a lifetime's worth of meditation.

Further, though Wiersbe does write about many famous Christians (Spurgeon, Moody, Taylor, et al.) people like Wesley, Knox, Calvin, et al. are strangely absent from this list. Perhaps this is so because he had other factors motivating him to pick the `50'. A very large percentage of the `50' were in someway associated either with D.L. Moody or the ministries attached to his legacy.

About the Author

Gongkang Fu is Professor of Civil Engineering and Chairman of Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, and Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor of the Chinese Education Ministry at Tongji University, China. He was head of structures research with the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) for seven years, and has worked on design and research projects for the FHWA and the California, Georgia, New York, Michigan, and Ohio DOTs. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Best Highway Bridge Design Book So Far

Being in this industry for 10 years, I would like to recommend this book to anyone who likes to become a bridge engineer. There are no other textbook covering basic bridge design as good as this one. They are either too basic or too academic to get a sense of practical design procedure. But, this book covers pretty much all you need from concrete bridge, steel bridge, to abutment design.

However,nothing is perfect. I don't agree with some design procedures such as the railing test and overhang slab design. Maybe, since we are in such large and great county, every state DOT has its own way to design the bridge. Even engineers interpret the same code in different ways.

All in all, it is a good primer book. To become a good bridge engineer, you still need to read your own state DOT design memos, design guidance, and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specificatons (BDS).

this book needs a better thought process and not expect people to understand it by looking at the examples. Plus, the example is just one long examples with really just one way in doing the problem but inconsistent.
