This is a 40 day devotional study that could be used individually or even in a small group. Each day is one Bible passage that draws the reader to really explore that passage instead of just reading it and moving on.

It seems that part of "praying" the scriptures is to really talk to God about what the scriptures mean, and what it means to each person. The reader can use these are their only devotional time, or they could use it as a starting point for their own journal time with God. After going through the 40 days of praying scripture, I believe the reader will have a basic idea of how to do this on their own, with a different Bible passage if they wanted to. And that I believe is one of the best things about this book. It is not just a book that you read, journal, and put down--rather it can be a book that can help someone see each Bible passage as a way to pray to God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

While most of the scripture passages are in the New Testament, there are about 1/4 that are from the Old Testament. I wish there were more Old Testament passages, but that is just a person preference.

Both experienced and novice Bible students could enjoy and benefit from this book.

Good book, a little bit thin for content
By DH
This is a very self-directed book, meaning you have to find your own motivation to fill in the blanks and lead your own prayer times. I do believe that praying the Scriptures of the Bible are powerful, and a very positive thing to do as a follower of Jesus, but I personally had a hard time finding the gusto to do it. This book is probably not for beginners, but for a more disciplined, season saint. Someone who already spends time in concentrated prayer would benefit from this book. There is a short devotional, (paragraph) in the beginning of each chapter, followed by a set of blank lines to fill in your prayer, ending with a scripture for reference. I think I needed more structure overall.

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Jump Start Your Prayer Life
By Angie B.
I wasn't familiar with Kevin Johnson but I think this little book was a great place to become familiar with him. This little 40 day book is a great intro into developing a prayer life. Each day's lesson is short enough to be completed as part of a time of study and reflection. It is self-directed but prayer is supposed to be a mostly private affair so that set up makes sense. I like that the topics vary and are all based on relatively familiar passages of Scripture. There are also multiple translations quoted throughout so you can see the varied ways man has translated God's Word. Each lesson also has reflection phrases where the reader can write their prayer response to Scripture and several reflection/discussion questions at the end. The book sets itself up nicely as a book for small group study as well.

If you are struggling to jump start your prayer life, this little book could provide that jump. I also think if you journal your answers in another notebook, the book can be used multiple times. This is definitely a book I'm keeping on my bookshelf for use in my own personal walk with the Lord.

Note: Bethany House gave me a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.

"Thanks, Steve and John, for telling us to take a minute, shut off the 'autopilot,' and think about how to live the second half. Some good insight, but struggles
By eh3k
I picked up this book in part because I found some valuable insight in Arterburn's Everyman's Battle and in part because I'm approaching 40 and getting more introspective about my life. While I found some parts of this book helpful, overall I have to give it a mixed review. The target audience appears to be boomers thoroughly enmeshed in the evangelical subculture and who are going through "mild" midlife crises. For those who've made a complete mess of their lives or as an evangelical tool to minister to non-Christian men in mid-life crisis, this book is not for you. You may well find some helpful advice, but the 'Manual' is too lightweight to offer any solid help.

Pros - The authors hit on several very good points in the sections on the things parents taught us about life and about ourselves. Even as men the effects of parental influence can still be felt profoundly.

The section about what men in midlife have gained in terms of perspective on life and how time changes things has some keen insight as does the discussion of not taking our wives for granted.

The authors have a refreshing view of God's love and desire for relationship with us, particularly for guys who come out of a fundamentalist background. God indeed created us to enjoy both Him and His creation.

Following the patter of "exercises" from the Everyman series, Arterburn is big on writing exercises. Whether you take the suggestion literally or use his questions to think through our roles and how our history has shaped our character, the idea is a good one and can be used to great benefit.

Cons - As a self-proclaimed Christian book, I would have expected something about the bible in it. Arterburn and Shore presuppose a Christian audience, however the few references to "wanting to live for God" in the 2nd half of life notwithstanding, there are virtually no references to scripture in the whole book.

Arterburn's pseudo stream of consciousness writing gets in the way of the message. It's hard to read too seriously when the writing is like one-sided dialog that's attempting to sound cool. Also as a matter of style, many of the illustrative stories are kind of obtuse and don't really seem to emphasize whatever the particular point is the authors are attempting to make.

I did not feel that the book dealt substantively with serious, but all too common issues of addiction that plague men; issues such as pornography (there is a passing reference), anger, greed and materialism, and other forms of habitual behavioral patterns that heavily impact mid-life issues.
On a similar vein, I felt that some of the sections of the book offered to tackle very good subjects, but fell short on dealing with the underlying issues. For example the section on "keeping secrets" doesn't address what to do if the secrets are things like an affair in the past or an addiction to porn or having been molested as a kid or any one of those other unsavory issues guys all too often have.

In summary, you'll get out of this book what you put into it. I consider the main value is in the "To Do" sections if the reader puts some thought into it.

Exercises Make "Manual" Work
By Actionman2go
The Midlife Manual For Men serves as an effective guide into that too-cliched period of life where men frequently should stop for meaningful direction - but don't.
Steve Arterburn and John Shore write in an entertaining, engaging style that leads readers through the roles of manhood and toward hope and significance. Readers working the exercises at each chapter's end will benefit the most because the work helps focus readers both toward who they are and who God wants them to be.
For example, under "Son" the first "Things to Do" exercise is to write a brutally-honest letter to your father. This forced me to confront some of my late father's traits I didn't want to recognize, traits that he passed on to me. I wanted to remember him as a hero. The next exercise let me - it is to write a letter telling your father how much you love him and why. The authors say you can mail the second letter. Then the exercises go on to one asking how being your father's son "affected one's ideas or experiences relative to being a child of our Lord."
Such exercises join the reading to leave you with the feeling that no matter what you've done wrong so far in your life there's a lot you've done right as well. I saw there's hope for a more fulfilling life in the future and how to let God lead me to that life.
Shore's example of one Mr. Williams and his amazing mid-life art career stands out as a highlight of the book to me. I will not spoil the example with details - just describe it as an excellent example of how God speaks His will to every man in midlife.
I believe the manual has helped draw me closer toward God's goal of using me for His will during my life's remaining days, despite what at times seemed irrelevant passages due to my own life experiences. For almost all, the book should prove most entertaining and effective.

Helpful information and practical tips for coping with life's uncertainties and unexpected happenings
By FaithfulReader.com
Stephen Arterburn --- founder and chairman of New Life Ministries, the nation's largest faith-based broadcast, counseling and treatment ministry --- has penned another dynamic resource that men born between 1946 and 1964 will find encouraging, practical, inspiring and so, so funny. Arterburn, who has written over 70 books, has teamed up with fellow author John Shore to bring respite, relief and welcome reassurance to men everywhere.

Whether or not an individual man is struggling with the stereotypical midlife issues, this text will be earmarked for years to come. Men will discover commonalities with one another on such themes as being a middle-aged male, harboring a he-man of the universe mentality, being a son, a husband, a provider and a father, and facing forward into the future with courage and confidence.

Arterburn opens the book with an admission. His marriage of 17 years had ended; he was 46 years old and, in his words, "...as miserable as he'd ever been in his life." He writes that he was without hope and tells of being stripped of everything, including pretense and superficiality. It was just him and Jesus "fellowshipping in suffering." Fast forward six years later. Remarried and the father of a one-year-old son, Arterburn offers perspective and wise counsel for facing hard times, looking at himself accurately, and moving ahead with faith and integrity.

As Arterburn and Shore point out, midlife isn't what it used to be. In the year 1800, the life expectancy for an American man was 35 years; today it's 76. The sheer increase in time factor leaves more for men to "reflect upon, adjust, or change our lives." The authors cite some characteristic "symptoms" of midlife transitioning...or midlife "crisis-ing." Men might experience depression, feel acute irritability, engage in too much "partying," unwise or extravagant spending, have an obsession with sex, or have an affair.

In their He-Man of the Universe chapter, Arterburn and Shore afford readers a comical yet all-too-accurate portrayal of the "he-man" mentality, to which most men battle against succumbing. Referring to these not-so-healthy-attitudes, they list some "good riddances" with both clarity and comical asides.

* Getting rid of unceasing expectation of oneself
* Finishing off a crippling sense of entitlement
* Making peace with emotions by not suppressing them
* Casting off the lone ranger mentality of not needing anyone

On the positive flip side, they suggest the following "he-man pure gold" recommendations to be adopted in place of the above.

* Understanding the proper use of power
* Understanding how important responsibility is
* Understanding how to grow bit by bit toward maturity
* Understanding how challenges and bravery fit in this world

With keen wit and fun-loving personal tale-telling admissions, Arterburn and Shore offer their readers both helpful information and practical tips for coping with life's uncertainties and unexpected happenings. Readers --- males and the females who love them --- will appreciate this filled-to-the-brim manual for midlife.

Can Homosexuality Be Healed?, by Francis MacNutt

Too often, especially in the church, the subject of homosexuality causes deep misunderstanding and painful rifts. Is it really possible to believe that homosexuals did not choose that lifestyle, and yet maintain biblically that the behavior is sinful? Yes, says author Francis MacNutt, and the prayerful result leads to a new possibility: Jesus Christ can transform the homosexual's orient-ation so that he or she can actually become heterosexual.

The striking clarity and practicality of this book will guide the compassionate reader who feels intuitively (and biblically) that homosexuality is wrong but fears being labeled ignorant or "homophobic." And homosexuals who want to change will find that specific prayer brings extraordinary results.

Is there hope and help for those who are struggling?

To someone struggling with homosexuality, churches can present a confusing message. Some insist that a repentant homosexual renounce all ties to the homosexual lifestyle and live out his or her days in celibacy. Others believe that since no one chooses to be homosexual, the only compassionate solution is complete acceptance. Neither viewpoint takes into account all aspects of the issue. Is there another option that incorporates not only the traditional position that homosexual acts are sinful but also the fundamental reality of every person's need for love and acceptance?

Many of the one-star reviews are agenda-based. I urge you to give this book a chance.
By David Kennedy Bird
Francis MacNutt is a treasure. He has a genuine heart for people, a heart for ministry, and a heart for healing. He is careful both in his handling of the Biblical data and in his handling of the clinical data, which are extensive. People who are suffereing from sexual distortions of various kinds are oppressed by the Enemy, and it's not okay to leave them that way without informing them that healing is avaliable! Similarly, it would not be compassionate to tell a cancer patient that his condition is irreversible if there is, indeed, a cure avaliable. Fr. MacNutt and other deliverance / healing counselors who work with homosexuals, often in the face of ugly threats of violence from the homosexual community, are genuine heroes, as any former homosexual who has discovered wholeness through their ministry will be quick to acknowledge.

Addendum, April 2014: I received a reply to this review from a man expressing great frustration with this book and with his own struggle. I believe his message was genuine, and i'd like to extend this review a bit to take his frustration seriously. I don't know why some people receive supernatural deliverance and transformation from Jesus while others find themselves continuing to struggle against unwelcome impulses. God is mysterious, and each person's path is going to be different. I know (as do all honest Christians) what it is like to struggle against patterns of sin--just not THAT sin. Sometimes the power of Jesus Christ seems to bring immediate cleansing and freedom; sometimes there is a process that involves agonizing, ongoing struggle. The Enemy does not give up easily. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to anyone contending with this or any other kind of besetting sin. Struggling against our own sinful impulses is rough. It takes courage, strength, honesty and patience.

CAN JESUS "TRANSFORM THE HOMOSEXUAL'S ORIENTATION" TO HETEROSEXUAL?
By Steven H Propp
Francis Scott MacNutt (born 1925) is a resigned Catholic Dominican priest most associated with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and has written many popular books such as Healing (Revised and Expanded; Silver Anniversary), The Power to Heal, The Nearly Perfect Crime: How the Church Almost Killed the Ministry of Healing, etc. In 1980 he left the priesthood to marry a younger woman [they received a dispensation to marry within the Catholic church] who was a psychologist who assisted in his healing ministry, which they now run jointly.

He wrote in the Introduction to this book, "I am writing this little book simply because there seem to be so many ordinary people---non-Christian as well as Christian---who intuitively, instinctively feel that homosexual activity is wrong, but are confused because the culture, and even some church leaders, approve of such activity... They do not have time to read a long book about homosexuality, yet they want to learn more about the topic... Is it possible to be loving and compassionate while upholding the traditional Christian position? I think it is, and that is why I am writing this little book." (Pg. 7-8)

He asserts, "My experience, and that of many others, has been that homosexuality can be healed through prayer. This... position... incorporates what is true in (1) the traditional position (that homosexual acts are sinful); and (2) the deepest needs of the homosexual to be accepted as a human being and not to be condemned for his or her sexual orientation. Most Christians do not know ... that Jesus Christ can transform the homosexual's orientation so that he or she can become heterosexual." (Pg. 8-9)

He states, "I think it is fair to say that the texts themselves [e.g., Rom 1:26-27; Lev 18:22 & 20:13]... will admit only to the traditional understanding that homosexual acts are wrong. The more recent interpretations are not found in the texts themselves but are a reinterpretation of morality based on the homosexual experience, not on the texts." (Pg. 25)

He contends, "Because the roots of homosexuality are complex, we make a mistake to suppose we could lay out one method that would be universally successful. Nevertheless here are some general guidelines that should help. First, anticipate that the chances of prayer changing the homosexual's orientation are extraordinarily good. I expect that, ideally, it should be close to 100 percent, although because of our human limitations, the results are not that perfect. Nevertheless you can expect wonderful things to happen. Next, as I have said, the physical, sexual aspect on the surface of same-sex orientation stands in contrast to its complex roots. So you should expect that, ordinarily, change will take place gradually over a fair amount of time. How much time? An ideal situation would be to allow for talking and praying for an hour or more once a week until the change has taken place. This might take six months (more or less). With counseling but without healing prayer, the process may take three years." (Pg. 59-60)

MacNutt is admittedly a controversial figure. After his marriage, he was initially defrocked and kicked out of the Dominicans, although his excommunication has since been lifted and he was granted the dispensation to marry in the Catholic church. His picking up of charismatic gifts under the influence of Protestant Pentecostals originally raised eyebrows, although his healing ministry while he was still a Catholic priest was very popular.

As will be seen from the preponderance of 5-star and 1-star reviews of this book (I wonder how many reviewers have actually read the book?), people disagree strongly about MacNutt’s views on this issue. I would only suggest that one read him with an open mind; one need not agree with his views, and one can certainly vehemently reject them, but one should first learn what they are.

Yes ! Homosexuality Can Be Healed ! By God's Power.
By Michael O. Peralta
If a person chooses to repent of the sin of homosexuality then Jesus can definitely heal them.
Believe God in what He says about homosexuality. Don't believe man or society. God never lies
and He is never mistaken. Man however is many times mistaken and can be dull of hearing God.
So don't trust your soul to man. Trust your soul to Jesus.

Rooted in Good Soil (Shapevine): Cultivating and Sustaining Authentic Discipleship, by Tri Robinson

After pastoring for twenty-eight years Tri Robinson came to the realization that people are robbed of an authentic Christian life due to the pursuit of empty promises from the world. Taking a deeper look at Jesus's parable of the sower, Robinson discovered that the authentic work of faith happens as people become rooted in good soil.

Both a pastor and a farmer, Robinson offers a compelling exploration of Jesus's parable, showing how the natural world is a rich source of wisdom for our spiritual lives. Pastoral scenes of agriculture blend with gut-wrenching stories from real life as Robinson shows readers how to cultivate a deep and lasting faith. In a culture that seems enamored with quick fixes and superficial amusements, Rooted in Good Soil gives readers a more authentic and fulfilling way to live.

Refreshing look at an old parable
By Joshua Hopping
I have long been a fan of Tri Robinson's books - partly because I know Tri personally, and partly because I believe in what he is writing about.

This time is no different.

"Rooted in Good Soil" is an easy-to-read book full of personal stories built around the Parable of the Sower and the theme of cultivating and sustaining authentic discipleship. Only, instead of writing an exegesis of the text, Tri looks at the Parable of the Sower through the eyes of a farmer - as you can see by his chapter titles:

1) Finding the Secret of the Harvest: The Condition of the Soil
2) Cultivated and Broken: Repentance
3) The Compost of Our Lives: Growing through the Pain
4) The Planted Seed: God's Hidden Work
5) Soil, Sun, and Rain: God's Hidden Work
6) Photosynthesis: Transformed to Serve
7) Symbiotic Relationships: Becoming Part of an Authentic Community
8) The Trill of the Harvest: Bearing Fruit

The best part about this book for me was getting to know Tri a little better. I had heard some of the stories at one point or the other over the last eight years (I've even listed through some of them) - but it was quite interesting to see how God fitted them all together to shape Tri and his wife, Nancy.

All in all, it was a wonderfully refreshing look at an old parable. :)

A Fresh Approach
By Glenn Schroder
Tri Robinson has a depth of pastoral experience combined with an authentic heart for true discipleship. He brings these qualities to his book Rooted In Good Soil. A fresh, non-programmatic approach to discipleship, recommended for pastors and anyone who desires greater depth in their relationship with Jesus.Rooted in Good Soil: Cultivating and Sustaining Authentic Discipleship (Shapevine)

Untamed Hospitality (The Christian Practice of Everyday Life): Welcoming God and Other Strangers, by Elizabeth Newman

Christian hospitality is more than a well-set table, pleasant conversation, or even inviting people into your home. Christian hospitality, according to Elizabeth Newman, is an extension of how we interact with God. It trains us to be capable of welcoming strangers who will challenge us and enhance our lives in unexpected ways, readying us to embrace the ultimate stranger: God.

In Untamed Hospitality, Newman dispels the modern myths of hospitality as a superficial commodity that can be bought and sold at The Pottery Barn and restores it to its proper place within God's story, as displayed most fully in Jesus Christ. Worship, she says, is the believer's participation in divine hospitality, a hospitality that cannot be sequestered from our economic, political, or public lives. This in-depth study of true hospitality will be of interest to professors, students, and scholars looking for a fresh take on a timeless subject.

From Publishers Weekly
What passes for hospitality in contemporary life—being "nice," reaching out to consumers, and practicing multiculturalism for its sake—is a distortion of real hospitality, according to Newman, a professor of theology and ethics at Baptist Theological Seminary. In our political, economic and ethical common life, as well as within our Christian congregations, we have domesticated hospitality. True hospitality is learned in worship, which, at its best, teaches people to receive from God, as well as to give everything back. Rather than motivating us to be hospitable, Newman explains, worship transforms us so that no other choice is possible. Newman explores how corporate worship (singing, praying and so on) can help people overcome the individualism of contemporary culture, which works against Christian understandings, and begin to see their lives as gifts from God. Particularly in the Eucharist, people learn to be both guest and host, and "become people capable of recognizing and receiving Christ," able to see God in others, no matter how strange or challenging they appear. This scholarly study of how North American culture understands, and has marginalized, true hospitality will be of interest primarily to academics, clergy and students. (Apr.)

From the Back Cover
Untamed Hospitality is part of The Christian Practice of Everyday Life series, dedicated to theological consideration of the concerns of everyday life. Series editors are David S. Cunningham and William T. Cavanaugh.

"In the face of church trivialized as 'inclusivity,' and of worship reduced to 'entertainment,' Elizabeth Newman here invites us into the classical liturgy of the household of God, where people learn to embody true hospitality. She shows how participation in the life of the Triune God--as both reception and gift--then shapes and calls for parabolic and transformative enactment in the social worlds of the sciences, medicine, economics, politics, and education. The author's criticisms of contemporary culture and her display of a Christian alternative are equally grounded in wide scholarship and enlivened by engaging examples. A book to savor and enjoy!"--Geoffrey Wainwright, Duke University

"If we open our hearts to the stranger, we will open our hearts to what is strange within us. This precious book shows a way to peace and to unity inside us and around us, for the church and for the world."--Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche

"Elizabeth Newman has rescued us from flabby and incoherent notions of tolerance that sanctify the status quo, and provided us with a theologically astute understanding of the role that the practice of hospitality should play in the life of the Christian community and of the individual believer. She does a masterful job of showing how this practice ties together politics, economics, sacraments, and the basic doctrinal and moral convictions of the church to constitute our lives as faithful disciples who can speak meaningfully in and to this time and place. A theological work of the first order!"--Barry Harvey, Baylor University

"This is a brilliant book. Elizabeth Newman translates complex theological and philosophical issues into the flesh and blood reality of lived-out Christian discipleship. She seamlessly weaves the practice of Christian worship into a critical analysis of economic, political, and educational practices--not attempting to create a grandiose vision of radical social reconstruction, but instead articulating how the daily practice of Christian hospitality can slowly build a new world. Essential reading for anyone looking for a positive alternative to our disintegrating bourgeois culture."--Murray Jardine, author of The Making and Unmaking of Technological Society

About the Author

She is the coeditor for Studies in Baptist History and Thought and has published numerous articles in theology and ethics, including essays on theology and science, Christian identity and higher education, the priesthood of all believers, baptism, and the Lord's Supper.

entertaining angels
By Clint Schnekloth
This book helps push the envelope on our traditional notions of hospitality. The chapters on a variety of cultural subjects push us to consider hospitality in a very realistic and concrete- neither romanticizing or dismissing the profundity of hospitality itself.

I was especially interested to read the concrete proposals. Some of these were somewhat perfunctory, but then, this is a cultural and theological study. The author would likely encourage me to do my own homework- read her reflections and then apply them in context.

I highly recommend this book. Like so much of what is coming out of Brazos Press these days, it is exemplary in its exploration of systematic theology in its practical dimensions.

Detailed more for college students

Book was written more for seminary training and too difficult for Bible Study group. Much too wordy and too many stories some of which we were unable to see how it fit subject. Chapters too long and could have been written in 5 pages instead of 20 or 30.

Not for Everybody
By Amazon Customer
I found this to be a long, slow read. First of all, the book is dense. I had to read a section, then think about it for awhile, and then read another section. In addition to density of content, Newman's style is very academic and formal. Her occasional personal anecdotes felt jarring, like a college professor who one day tries to be your friend. I would not recommend this book to a person with little or no theological education. Although the title says it is about hospitality "in everyday life," it was not written for "everyday people."

I wasn't expecting much with 24 pages, but was really surprised with the quality of this little book. I was impressed with the detail that went into it, and it helped whet my appetite for the movie.

I thought it may be a book. Basically a movie trailer that spoils the ending. Not what I was looking for as a reader. Maybe I misread the description, but this is a 16 pg overview. Not a novel.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL: THE WITCHES OF OZ is a children's book version of the movie OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. It's told in a traditional format with many still photographs taken directly from the film. The book is meant as a tie-in to the movie, so I wouldn't recommend reading the book if you haven't seen the film first as it does give away some key plot elements. However, it does make a nice gift to child who has already seen and enjoyed the movie.

Just War as Christian Discipleship: Recentering the Tradition in the Church rather than the State, by Daniel M. Jr. Bell

This provocative and timely primer on the just war tradition connects just war to the concrete practices and challenges of the Christian life. Daniel Bell explains that the point is not simply to know the just war tradition but to live it even in the face of the tremendous difficulties associated with war. He shows how just war practice, if it is to be understood as a faithful form of Christian discipleship, must be rooted in and shaped by the fundamental convictions and confessions of the faith. The book includes a foreword by an Army chaplain who has served in Iraq and study questions for group use.

From the Back Cover
"By reframing just war as a discipline of Christian discipleship, Bell has breathed new life into the discussion surrounding this important topic. He has done so, moreover, in a manner that makes this book accessible to those well versed in the debates as well as those who are confronting these issues for the first time. We are in his debt."--Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School

"Bell has written a book that I wish I had during my deployments. Just War as Christian Discipleship addresses the just war tradition in a way that not only adds to our knowledge of the historical roots of the tradition but also contributes to the Christian soldier's desire to embody the principles as lifestyle. . . . If the Christian community will take seriously Bell's call for a discipleship that embraces the just war tradition, we can all feel more confident that our nation will strive to maintain the moral high ground in its military endeavors and beyond."--Chaplain Lt. Col. Scott A. Sterling (from the foreword)

"This groundbreaking book synthesizes the writing style and substance of just war ethicists Paul Ramsey and Oliver O'Donovan with that of pacifist ethicists John Howard Yoder and Stanley Hauerwas, resulting in a constructive account of just war that is embedded and embodied in the life and practices of the Christian church. It should be required reading for anyone interested in ethics and just war, especially for Christians in the pulpits and in the pews, in the classrooms and in the barracks. It will become a standard resource for helping Christians who espouse the just war tradition to adhere to it in a way that, as John Howard Yoder would put it, is honest and has teeth."--Tobias Winright, Saint Louis University

"Important, accessible, and astonishing. Bell asks hard questions about the use of the just war tradition and instead of leaving that burden of conscience on soldiers, chaplains, or political leaders, he puts it where it belongs--on the whole Christian community. The book is a rich introduction to the just war tradition, a thought-provoking look at current military realities, and a clarion call for all Christians to grow in faithfulness to the One who told them to love their enemies."--Kelly S. Johnson, University of Dayton

Just War
By Robert O. Weitzeil
Bell clearly addresses the issues surrounding Christian approaches to war and violence, with an excellent historical background. But, I feel he fails to offer much of an answer to so many of the problems facing a true disciple of Jesus in confronting violence. A good source for a study of the issues.

Zig Ziglar and Amazon are amazing!!!!
By Regstarrw28
Zig Ziglar hit a home run with this book on selling. He gives so much information on the art of sales from his trial and error. I mean, who wouldn't want to invest in this book to save time from making the same mistakes that Zig made? I highly recommend this book and I will be reading it over and over again.

By the way, I just have to say that Amazon is so fantastic. There was a discrepancy with the shipping address for this and 2 other books that I was to receive. Amazon re-shipped the books to me, at no additional cost, and they arrived the next day because of overnight shipping. They were so considerate and took care of me. I am a VERY satisfied customer!

You should read this book regardless if you are the seller or the buyer!
By Mike A.
Not only does this book teaches you how to sell, but it also helps you tap into yourself. You find new area's of strategy that you didn't read in the book, just because the book plants so many seeds. I have sold 6.7 million dollars of merchandise this year from this books tactics alone. It is a must read for not only anyone looking to sell, but also anyone looking to buy.

The sales book on which all sales books are based
By Steven D. Mietelski
I owe Zig Ziglar. Big time. This book increased my ability to demonstrate and sell our service dramatically after one read. Zig tells you and then sells you on the fact that you've gotta read his book three times: once with quick notes in the margins, a second time with thorough notes and a third time with a steno pad so you can make your own "Secrets of Closing the Sale."

I've purchased three copies of this book. Two for myself, one to give out to my staff. I started out thinking about sales in the same way most people do - sleazy scumbags out to make a fast buck. I started out wanting to make more money. I ended up learning that "You can have anything in the world you want if you'll just help enough other people get what they want."

Ziglar teaches you, from the beginning, that there's no room for success in a salesman's career if he's taking the fast route, making the quick sale and then locking the door behind him.

Ziglar teaches you that if you want to make a living in the profession of selling you have to truly believe in your product. You have to be so convinced that your product is the right product to fit your prospects needs that you can't possibly believe or understand how they wouldn't want it.

Yeah. Ziglar teaches the closes. There are hundreds of scenarios and stories that demonstrate various closing techniques. Most of them are great (a few are cheesy).

But what makes this book so good is that it constantly drives it home - a good salesman is an honest salesman. A good salesman has his customer's best interest in mine. A good salesman has a solution to a need of his customer. When you help the customer, they will help you (with money).

When I finished this book I felt I needed to learn how to prospect and find new clients for the business I manage so I could show them why they needed us. I started reading books on cold calls and searching the internet for more information. And I started to notice a major trend...

Anyone who knows anything about sales has studied Zig Ziglar's Secrets of Closing the Sale. You'll see the concepts, ideas and phrases from this book echoed throughout all sales-oriented literature. You're going to see direct quotes. I guarantee it.

If you're only going to ever read one sales book this is the book to read. It's going to teach you how to close the sale, sure, but more importantly it's going to teach you that being a salesman is about helping others. It's going to teach you to be true. And you will profit because of it.

Afterthought: This book will also benefit those who don't directly "sell" to clients but are involved in the overall process of presenting an organization. It's important to "have everyone on the same page" and "playing for the team" when it comes to building a successful business or brand. So if at all possible get a few extra copies of this book and hand it to the individuals who aren't even involved in sales!
